Raymond E. Thom
CARBONDALE -- Raymond E. Thom, 84, died at 1:37 a.m. Wednesday, March 5, 2003, at the Rehab and Care Center of Jackson County in Murphysboro. He was born Sept. 10, 1918, in Willisville, to Phillip John Thom and Ida (Beare) Thom. Mr. Thom married Helen E. (Nance) Thom on July 25, 1939. He was a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. Thom was a graduate of SIUC with a BS and Masters in Education. He did some post-graduate work at Northern Illinois University in Dekalb. He was Superintendent of Schools in Elizabeth from 1958 to 1973. He was a member of the Shrine Club and a Sunday School teacher at Dutch Ridge Baptist Church. Mr. Thom was President of the Farmers State Bank in Alto Pass from 1987 until 1995. He was a member of Dutch Ridge Baptist Church in Murphysboro. He is survived by his wife, Helen E. Thom of Carbondale; a daughter and her spouse, Linda and Ron Ferguson of Goreville; two granddaughters and their spouses, Elizabeth Rae and Michael Helton of Goreville and Rebecca Lynn and Cleatus Palmer of Goreville; two great-granddaughters, Taylor Lynn Reichert and Jillian Grace Helton, both of Goreville; great-grandson, Davis Wyatt Helton of Goreville; step-great-grandson, Jordan Tyler Palmer of Goreville; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Wyatt Ray Thom; and three brothers. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, March 7, 2003, at the Dutch Ridge Baptist Church in Murphysboro, with the Revs. Davy Miller and Lucien Bozarth officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Crawshaw Funeral Home in Murphysboro and from 8:30 a.m. until the hour of service Friday at the church. STEELEVILLE -- Carl L. Goetting, 71, died at 4:45 a.m. Monday, March 3, 2003, in Sparta Community Hospital. Services were at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Steeleville, with the Rev. Alan W. Janneke and Vicar Ryan Matthias officiating. Burial was in St. Mark's Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation was Tuesday and Wednesday at Wilson's Funeral Home in Steeleville. Memorials may be made to the St. Mark's Lutheran School. Mr. Goetting retired from Egyptian Electric Co-op as a maintenance engineer. He was a member of the St. Mark's Lutheran Church of Steeleville, the Carpenter's Union of Chester and the IBEW Union at REA. Mr. Goetting was born Oct. 26, 1931, in Steeleville to Henry C. and Mathilda (Salger) Goetting. He married L. Maxine Waltermate on Feb. 17, 1951, at Peace Lutheran Church in Steeleville. She survives. Other survivors include his children and their spouses, Mark L. and Susan Goetting of Murphysboro, Todd A. and Cindy Goetting of St. Joseph, Jody and Deb Goetting of Pinckneyville, Jay C. and Angela Getting of Rochester, Minn., and Stacy Goetting of Sparta; grandchildren, Amie and Joseph Goetting, Mitchell and Megan Goetting, Grace and Logan Goetting, Luke, Jordan, Lincoln and Mackenzie Goetting, Anna Mae, Emily and Jay McCray, and Jody, Jenna and Jacob Wingerter; and and two sisters, Adell Hinnerichs of Mesa, Ariz., and Ella Mae Gerlach of Steeleville. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.
Clyde C. 'Pedro' Hawkins
CREAL SPRINGS -- Clyde C. "Pedro" Hawkins, 91, passed away at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at Saline Care Center in Harrisburg. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 7, 2003, at the Blue Funeral Home, Marion with the Rev. Shorty Alsip officiating and a eulogy given by John "J. W. " Hawkins. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, March 6, 2003, at the funeral home, with Masonic rites being held at 7 p.m. by the Creal Springs-Stonefort Masonic Lodge. Burial will be at New Burnside Cemetery
in New Burnside. Mr. Hawkins was born in Le Pano, Ark. on Sept. 22, 1911, to John and Cordia (Emery) Hawkins. He married Alice Marie Newbold on April 30, 1932. She preceded him in death on March 16, 1987. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, John W. and Norma Hawkins; daughter and son-in-law, Rose Marie and Lowell Mausey; six grandchildren, Brian Hawkins, Teresa Holcomb, Jennifer Hawkins, Dean Mausey, Tina Robertson and Dawn Pierce; thirteen great-grand children; and sister, Hazel and Bill Stephenson of Sebring, Fla. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and four sisters. Clyde was a past Master Mason of the Creal Springs Masonic Lodge AF & AM. He was a retired employee of the Illinois State Department of Corrections at Vienna.

ANNA -- S. Maxine Henderson, 76, of East Alton, formerly of Anna, passed away at 10:40 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, 2003, in Alton Memorial Hospital. She was born Oct. 9, 1926, in Alton. She married Clarence Richard Henderson on June 6, 1975. He preceded her in death on July 19, 1993. Mrs. Henderson was a member of the United Missionary Baptist Church in Lick Creek. She had worked at Alton State Hospital and Choate Mental Health Center. She retired as a production manager at RAVE and then worked in Home Health Care. She is survived by three daughters, Ramona Maronie of Wood river, Rochelle Moore of East Alton and Leslie Schulz of Alton; one son, Kim Albers of Dongola; nine grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and one step-son, Doug Henderson of Kane. She was preceded in death by her husband; two daughters, Alita in 1980 and Linda in infancy; and one step-son, Jay Henderson. Services will be at 3 p.m. Friday, March 7, 2003, at Crain Funeral Home in Anna with the Rev. Ken Wilson officiating. Interment will be in Ebenezer Hall Cemetery

DE SOTO -- Ruba G. Hicks, 99, passed away at 4:50 a. m., Friday, Feb. 28, 2003, at Mercy Health Center in Oklahoma City, Okla. Services will be at 10:30 a. m., Friday, March 7, 2003, at Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale with the Rev. Paul Hicks officiating. Interment will be at the De Soto Cemetery
in De Soto. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p. m., today at the Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale. Ruba was born Sept. 4, 1903, in Herrin, to Charles Burgess and Nannie (Eberhardt) Sanders. She married Claude Jackson Hicks on June 4, 1932, at Charleston, Mo. He preceded her in death on February 5, 1980. She is also preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Neva Eastman. Survivors include two daughters, Betty Jo Hill of De Soto and Donna S. Jordan of Oklahoma City, Okla.; four grandchildren, Cynthia S. McGhee of Oklahoma, Francis E. Hill of De Soto, Shaun M. Jordan of Austin, Texas, and Eric Alan Jordan of Austin, Texas; and four great-grandchildren, Robert Ryan, Ashley Sue, Nicholas Edward, and Amber Nicole McGhee, all of Oklahoma. Mrs. Hicks was a member of the First Baptist Church in DeSoto. Ruba worked as an Elementary school teacher in various schools in the area. She often taught in one-room school houses. She was a member of the Jackson County Homemakers Extension and the Retired Teachers Association.
Clifford Deion Bryant
ALTO PASS -- Clifford Deion Bryant, 64, died at 3:37 a.m. Tuesday, March 4, 2003, in Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. He was born on Jan. 16, 1939, in Alto Pass, the son of Clifford G. "Dick" and Luis Meadows Bryant. He married Opal Patricia Gibson on Sept. 29, 1961, in Cobden. She survives. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Alto Pass and Operating Engineers Local No. 318. He is survived by his wife, Pat Bryant of Alto Pass; a daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly and Matt Weldon of Alto Pass; two sons, Keven Deion Bryan and Patrick Waylon Bryant, both of Alto Pass; his mother, Lula Bryant of Carbondale; three sisters, Dorothy Brust of Ullin, Freda Clutts of Vergennes, and Donna Stouthamer of Peoria; two grandchildren, Chasta Nicole and Cherokee Dakota Weldon; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends. He was preceded in death by his father, and two sisters, Delores Scheffer and Darla Bryant. Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Alto Pass, with the Revs. Davy Miller, Danny Miller and Perry Williams officiating. Burial will be in Alto Pass Cemetery. CHRISTOPHER -- Ronald D. Motsinger, 53, died at 8:42 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at the Franklin Hospital. He was born in Christopher on May 26, 1949, to Virgil Motsinger and Flossie Key Motsinger. He was married to Lydia Alvarado Motsinger. She survives. Also surviving are his father, Virgil Motsinger of Christopher; three daughters, Linda and Mike Dodd of Plumfield, Melissa Motsinger of Cleburn, and Ivy Motsinger of DeSoto; one son James Motsinger of Royalton; 12 grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Rich Motsinger of Benton, Carl Motsinger of Tennessee, James Motsinger of Valier, Mike Motsinger of Christopher, Linda Motsinger of Christopher, Tim Motsinger of Christopher, Larry Motsinger of Carterville and Myra McWhitter of Christopher. His mother and one brother preceded him in death. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 7, 2003, at the Faith Missionary Baptist Church south of Christopher, with Bro. Ron Cremens officiating. Jerrold Bird Parran
CARBONDALE -- Jerrold Bird Parran was born Nov. 23, 1911, to the late Willis D. Parran and Lulu Bird Parran in Carbondale. On Sunday, March 2, 2003, Deacon Parran made the transition from life to everlasting life at 8:05 a.m. at Northlake Medical Center in Tucker, Ga. He was united in Christ at an early age and attended Rock Hill Missionary Baptist Church for most of his life. He was the Sunday school superintendent for several years before becoming a deacon in 1956. He served on the deacon board for 40 years until he moved to Decatur, Ga., in 1996. Jerrold attended Southern Illinois University from 1931-1935, majoring in chemistry. During this time he ran the 100-meter dash, holding the university record for 40-plus years. He married Lena Delores Valentine on Aug. 4, 1940. To this union three children were born: Gregory, Geraldine and Bette. Deacon Parran served in the United States
Army during World War II as a corporal in the Signal Corps Unit. He fought in the Pacific Theater against Japan and in the 1945 Battle of Okinawa, which had the highest number of American casualties for World War II. Jerrold received several medals for his efforts in this war, including the Bronze Star, the Legion of Merit, the National Defense Service, the Pacific Campaign and a World War II Victory Medal. Deacon Parran worked at Southern Illinois University in the housing department for most of his working career. He was a valued foreman over custodial services housed mainly at the Thompson Point dormitory area. He enjoyed his work and had many other interests in life. Besides being an avid reader, he loved the art of bird watching, and the study of astronomy. Music was also an integral part of his life, as he loved to sing and appreciated all genres of music. He was the drummer in a jazz band called Snow and the Rhinos. He leaves to celebrate his love: his wife, Lena Parran; one son, Gregory Parran; two daughters, Geraldine Greer, Bette (Gary Sr. ) Butler; seven grandsons, Charles Greer Jr., Gregory Parran II, Gary Butler Jr., Courtland Greer, Austin Butler, James Parran, Ryan Butler; nine great-grandchildren Michaela Greer, Christian Greer, Rachel Butler, Mariah Butler, Gregory Parran III, Alexandria Parran, Chandler Greer, Caleb Greer, Colby Greer; and a host of other family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Genevie Betty Curtis. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 8, in Rock Hill Missionary Baptist Church, at the corner of Marion and Monroe streets, with the Revs. Alfred McGowan and James Jackson officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Jackson Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangments.

Roy F. Myers
HERRIN -- Roy F. Myers, 91, died at 10:55 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, in Herrin Hospital. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 8, 2003, in the Herrin Cemetery, with the Rev. Henwood officiating. His body was cremated at his request. Van Natta Funeral Home in Herrin is in charge of arrangements. Roy was born on June 16, 1911, in Whittington to Fred and Nellie (King) Myers. He graduated from Herrin High School, and started working in the coal mines in 1932. He left the mines to serve in the U. S.
Army Air Force from Nov. 18, 1942, to Feb. 18, 1946. After his discharge, he continued working in the coal mines for 39 years. He worked for Freeman United in West Frankfort, Freeman Co. Orient No. 4, Zeigler No. 2 and Old Ben No. 15. Roy was also known by many in the community for his work in lawn care, trash service and tree service. He married Lucille (Garley) on March 3, 1973. She preceded him in death on Dec. 9, 1990. He was also preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Wayne Myers; and one sister, Blanche Lesley. He is survived by, and will be greatly missed by very close friends, Kim Bush, Glenda Bush, Rachel Bush, Blake Bush, Dalton Roy Bush and Ed and Betty Kinley. Memorials may be made to the Junior Ball League.
Mike Tatar
ZEIGLER -- Mike Tatar, 84, of 705 Baggott St., Zeigler, died at 9:51 a.m. Thursday, March 6, 2003 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Marion. Mike was born May 11, 1918, in Zeigler to Paul and Susan (Sopko) Tatar. He married Cordelia Williams on Oct. 18, 1941, in West Frankfort. She preceded him in death May 4, 1994. Survivors include a sister and brother-in-law, Anna (Tatar) and Jim Saul of Park Forest; a brother, Paul Tatar of Raleigh, N. C.; five nieces and two nephews, Margaret Susan Townsend and her husband, Bob, of Zeigler, Eileen Langdon and Ruthellen Schwarz of Madison, Wis., Sarah Winkler of Raleigh, N. C., Diana Saul of Santa Monica, Calif., Gordon Saul of Park Forest and John Michael Tatar of Zeigler; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. His parents and a brother, John Tatar, also preceded him in death. Mike attended the First Christian Church in Zeigler. He was a carpenter and mine construction worker who retired in 1979. He was an
Army veteran of World War II. Services for Mr. Tatar will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 8, 2003, at Vantrease Funeral Home in Zeigler, with Brother Larry Hallman officiating. Burial will be at Zeigler Cemetery, with military graveside rites courtesy of the Zeigler American Legion Patrick McClellan Post 177. Visiting hours are from 10 a.m. until the hour of the services Saturday at the funeral home.
