Virginia Elizabeth Dickerson
CARBONDALE -- Virginia Elizabeth Dickerson, 89, died Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. She was born on Dec. 13, 1912, in St. Louis, Mo., to Harry Joseph and Edith (Temple) Gensler. She moved to Carbondale in 1917 and attended University School and Carbondale Community High School. She married Harry Dickerson of McLeansboro on June 13, 1931, in Marion. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1981, their 60th anniversary in 1991, and celebrated their 70th anniversary last year. She is survived by three daughters, Rachael Nelson and her husband, Toby, of Carbondale, Brenda Dickerson of Carbondale and Linda Dickerson, at home; six grandchildren, Steven Nelson of Eldorado, Elizabeth Abbott of Birmingham, Mich., David Nelson of Glendale, Mo., Stephen Thomas, Raymond Thomas of Murphysboro, and Megan Dickerson of Carbondale; six great-grandchildren, Kathryn Bender, Zachary Nelson, Chelsea Abbott, Emily Abbott, Tanner Nelson and Tobey Nelson; and one sister, Dorthea Boggess of De Soto. Mrs. Dickerson was a member of the American Association of University Women, the Business and Professional Women's Club, National Retired Teachers Association and American Association of Retired Persons. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Carbondale for 77 years, where she taught intermediate Sunday school for several years. Mrs. Dickerson received her bachelor's and master's degrees from Southern Illinois University, and taught school in Granite City and in Jackson and Williamson counties. She also operated Jenny's Antiques from 1974 until 1996. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 21, at Huffman-Harker Funeral Home, with the Rev. Katherine Graves officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Sunday, Oct., 20, at the funeral home. She was preceded in death by one sister, Lillian Smith. Memorials may be directed to the First Christian Church.
Bernadette Ann Madden
CARBONDALE -- Bernadette Ann Madden, 51, died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002, at home. There will be no local service. A celebration of her life and burial will be later in Crystal Lake. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to her mother, Mary B. Madden, 138 Crystal Beach Ave. North Shore, Crystal Lake, IL 60014. She lived in Carbondale for more than 30 years. She leaves behind her beloved daughter, Brigette; eight brothers; four sisters; and her mother, all of the Chicago area, where she was born and raised.
Gayla Marshall
CARMI -- Gayla Marshall, 45, died at 11:36 a.m. Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, at the Ferrell Hospital in Eldorado. She was born Nov. 29, 1956 in Marion, the daughter of Leo Adrian "Jim" and Arlene June (Singleton) Whitehead. She married Darrell Gene Marshall on Oct. 18, 1981. She was a member of the Harvestime Temple in Mount Vernon, Ind. Surviving is her husband of 21 years, Darrell of Carmi; two daughters, Kami Marshall of Nashville, Tenn. and Alea Marshall of Marion; her father, Jim Whitehead of Marion; her grandfather, Hugh Ivan Singleton of Marion; three sisters, Cheryl McComas and Denise Norris of Marion and Lee Ann Steed of Eldorado; and three brothers, Dennis Whitehead of Carrier Mills and Leo and Clint Whitehead of Marion. Funeral services for Gayla Marshall will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21, at the Cherry Street General Baptist Church in Carmi, with Pastor Mark Tabor and Evangelist Jimmy Rossell officiating. Louise K. Bradley
ANNA -- Mrs. Louise K. Bradley, 87, died at 7:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, at Union County Hospital in Anna. She was born Sept. 11, 1915, in Bloomfield, Mo., the daughter of Herman and Virgie Mae Edwards Tanner. She is survived by one daughter, Agnes Zappa of Amory, Miss; two sons, James D. Norman of Dongola and Francis E. Bradley of Anna; two sisters, Dorothy Mitchell of Cape Girardeau, Mo., and Hazel Essex of Ellis Grove; six grandchildren; several great-and great-great-grandchildren; other relatives; and many friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, James; one son, Alfred; two brothers; and one sister. Services for Mrs. Louise K. Bradley will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21, at Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Anna, with the Rev. Charles Mitchell officiating. Interment will be in Anna City Cemetery. HERRIN -- Elinor M. Halstead, 91, died at 12:20 a.m. Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, at Herrin Hospital. Mrs. Halstead was born March 20, 1911, in Johnston City, to Joseph and Rose (Kenzie) Mitchell. She married Roscoe Lewis Halstead and he died Sept. 30, 1970. She was retired from Allen Industries in Herrin. She was a member of Our Lady or Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, and was a volunteer for many years at Williamson County Programs on Aging. She is survived by a daughter, Rose Frizzell of Herrin; two granddaughters and their husbands, Marla and Jerry Roethe of Springboro, Ohio, and Brenda and Daniel Austin of Herrin; three great grandchildren, Isaac Roethe of Springboro, Lennon Dorethy of Herrin, and Dee Elle Dorethy of Herrin; great grandchild, Audriaunna Dorethy of Herrin; sister, Josephine Garifo of Sun Lakes, Ariz.; brother-in-law, Kenneth McClain of Herrin; and several nieces and nephews. Her parents; four brothers, Ben Mitchell, Podge Mitchell, Mike Mitchell, and Angelo Mitchell; and one sister, Jeannette McClain,preceded her in death. Bramlett L. Smith
HERRIN -- Bramlett L. Smith, 90, died at 5:45 a.m. Friday, Oct. 18, 2002 at her home in Herrin. She was born Feb. 20, 1912 in Morganton, Ark., to Arley and Everell (Hardin) Rogers. She married Paul Smith on Nov. 14, 1932 in Heber Springs, Ark., and he died on July 23, 1961. She worked at Mattingly Nursing Home in Herrin, Allen Industries and Smoker Brothers in Herrin, and Sangamo Electric in the Ordill area. She was a Protestant and a member of the Herrin Senior Citizens Center. Survivors include one daughter, Linda Smith of Herrin; one son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Velma Smith of Leasburg, Fla.; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Besides her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Carolyn Brower and Loretta Smith; and one brother, Harold Rogers. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 22, at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Rev. Don Colson will officiate. Miss Freeman was an insurance secretary for the Hiens Agency. She was born May 18, 1935, in Murphysboro to Everett and Nora (Morris) Freeman. Survivors include one brother and sister-in-law, Everett and Brenda Freeman of Carbondale; two sisters, Donna Ridings of Murphysboro and Lois Weinstein of Peoria; five nieces and their husbands, Debbie and Ron Darosa, Tammy and Russel Wolf, Robin and David Maynard, Rebecca and Michael Batdorf, and Laurie Schaber; two nephews, Richard Freeman and Lawrence Reames; and 14 great-nieces and great-nephews. Her parents preceded her in death.

METROPOLIS -- Lela D. Darnell, 91 of Metropolis, formally of Pope County, passed away at 4:45 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, 2002 at the Good Samaritan Care Center. Graveside and burial services will be at noon, Monday, Oct. 21, at the Hamletsburg Cemetery
in Pope Co. Rev. Jack D. Russell will officiate. Lela is survived by one daughter, Jacqueline Mowery and her husband Perry V. of Jonesboro; one brother, Alfred Wallace Hogan of Paducah, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Brookport and a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Universe Chapter 508 of Brookport. She was a homemaker and assisted her husband on their family farm. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elbert and Mary Alice (Johnson) Hogan; her husband of 44 years, Kenneth; one sister, Charlotte Medley; and one brother, Thomas H. Hogan. MARION -- Ronald W. King, 61, died at 3:50 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, in Select Specialty Hospital in Evansville, Ind. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mr. King was an engineer for the Illinois Department of Commerce. He retired in February 1998. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Carrier Mills and Masonic Lodge 44 AF&AM in Springfield. He was born Feb. 1, 1941, in Harrisburg to Leo and Elsie (Dempsey) King. Survivors include his mother, of Carrier Mills; one brother and sister-in-law, Kendall and Kathy King of Carrier Mills; and one nephew, Joshua Logan King of Carrier Mills. His father, one infant brother, Lindell King, and grandparents, Logan and Jessie Dempsey and Ratio and Ora King, preceded him in death.
Cora (Clifford) Brown
VILLA RIDGE -- Cora (Clifford) Brown, 84, died at 10:35 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau, Mo. Mrs. Brown was born on Dec. 30, 1917, in Pulaski County, the daughter of the late Elmer and Cora Clifford. She married John T. Brown who preceded her in death on May 31, 1992. Mrs. Brown worked for Prudential Insurance for many years in Mount Vernon before retiring in 1979. Survivors include one niece, Brenda Berryhill of Cape Girardeau; one nephew, Steve Clifford of Villa Ridge; one sister-in-law, Ruth Billingsley of Cape Girardeau; two great-nieces; two great-nephews; two great-great-nieces and two great-great-nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother, Leonard Clifford, in 1983. Graveside funeral services for Cora (Clifford) Brown will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 21, at the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery

ANNA -- Mr. Bill M. Corzine, 70, died at 4:25 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002 at the Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau, Mo. He was born Aug. 17, 1932 at Mt. Pleasant, the son of William L. and Velma M. Miles Corzine. He is survived by one son, Dan Corzine of Alton; one sister, Dorothy Astin of Dongola; two brothers, Delmus Corzine of Little Rock, Ark. and Delene Corzine of Lawrence, Kan.; his special friend, Betty; other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. Bill was a member of the Union Masonic Lodge No. 627, a member of the Anna Moose Lodge No. 1346, and a member of the Teamsters Local No. 346 at West Frankfort. ZEIGLER -- Raymond Eugene Leinicke, 67, died Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002, in the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Marion. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher, with burial in Zeigler City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Mr. Leinicke was a retired factory worker. He was a Navy veteran of the
Korean War. He was born Aug. 24, 1935, in Murphysboro to Richard Leinicke and Helen Asa. He was engaged to Susan Minor. Survivors include five sons and one daughter-in-law, J. SOUTHERN ILLINOIS -- Joe Littrell, 86, of Cape Girardeau, formerly of Southern Illinois, died on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau. He was born Aug. 11, 1916, in Dalton, Mo., the son of Selba and Margaret Teut Littrell. He was united in marriage to Mary Wilson on June 28, 1947, in Jackson, Mo. He loved the land and what it produced, as was evident by his life. He was raised on a farm in Chariton County, Mo., and attended the University of Missouri College of Agriculture. After serving in the
Army during World War II, he worked as a feed salesman for Wayne Feeds. This ultimately led him to the Union County area, where he worked as a grain dealer and a farmer until his retirement in 1983. He was a member of the VFW and Trinity Lutheran Church, both in Cape Girardeau. Survivors include his wife, Mary, of Cape Girardeau; one son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Mae Littrell of Jonesboro; two grandchildren, Marie and Perry Littrell; and one brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Ethel Littrell. Mr. Littrell was preceded in death by his parents. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 21, in the chapel of Hileman and Parr Funeral Services, with Pastor Douglas Briete officiating. She was born Tuesday, Aug. 14, 1945, in East St. Louis to Martin Arthur and Mary Evelyn (Cook) Odom. Survivors include one son, Donald M. Odom of Christopher; her stepmother, Evelyn Odom of Murphysboro; one sister, JoAnn Blevins of Du Quoin; two nephews and their wives, Jeff and Melissa Blevins and James and Kristina Blevins; two great-nephews, Jeff G. and John Blevins; and a host of aunts, uncles, other relatives and close friends. Her parents preceded her in death.

CARBONDALE -- Lena Shovan, 92, died on her birthday, Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, at home. She was born Oct. 17, 1910, in Shawnee, Ohio, to Louis and Mary (Nagy) Shovan. A nephew, Raymond Carosy, of Christopher, survives. Her parents, one brother and two sisters preceded her in death. She was the former owner and operator of Red & White Grocery Store and a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. She had also worked at Vogler Motor Company. The funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 21, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with Father Robert Flannery officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.
