TILDEN -- Edith M. Oliver, 97, died at 6:45 p. m. Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, in Sparta Community Hospital. Services will be at 2 p. m. today, Jan. 6, 2002, in Wilson's Funeral Home in Tilden, with the Rev. Wilbur M. Franklin Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Tilden City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7:30 a. m. to 2 p. m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Arthritis Foundation. Mrs. Oliver was a homemaker. She was a member of the United Methodist Church. She was born Sept. 4, 1904, in Willisville to William Ulysses and Fannie (Smith) Williams. She married James Oliver on Feb. 16, 1922, in Chester. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Nina and Lyle Mulholland of Tilden; three grandchildren, Pamela Meyer of Ellis Grove, and Catherine Pannier and Samuel Mulholland, both of Tilden; and four great-grandchildren, Scott and Becky Meyer and Lucas and Brandon Vinyard. Her parents, two brothers and two sisters preceded her in death.
Wanda Juanita Wells
MARION -- Wanda Juanita Wells, 90, of Marion passed away at 5:27 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, in Herrin Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p. m. , Monday in Meredith-Blue Funeral Home. Visitation will be held at noon until the time of service at the funeral home. Entombment will be at Rose Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Wells was born on April 30, 1911 in West Frankfort, to John and Julia (Utley) Westray. She married Charles M. Wells on July 13, 1929, in Orient and he preceded her in death in 1982. Survivors include her three sons, Charles E. and Valeria Wells of Creal Springs, Bill Gene and Nancy Wells of Murphysboro, Bob Dene and Linda Wells of Bakersfield, Calif. ; nine grandchildren, Bobby D. Wells, Larry W. Wells, David M. Wells, Bill G. Wells, Todd Wells, Michael Wells, Sabrina (Wells) Yearack, Isabella (Wells) Shannon and Lori (Wells) Clemmens and 16 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers, three sisters and one great granddaughter. Mrs. Wells was of the Baptist faith. She was a homemaker and loved to cook and travel.

Dr. Harold L. DeWeese
CARBONDALE-- Dr. Harold L. "Bud" DeWeese, 83, 42-year resident of Carbondale, passed away at 4:30 p. m. Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, in Carbondale Memorial Hospital after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. Dr. DeWeese was born on May 9, 1918 in Macomb, Ill. to Arthur and Myrle DeWeese. Dr. DeWeese earned a Bachelors of Science degree from Illinois State University in 1941. Following graduation, he married his college sweetheart, Jewel Goodman and proceeded to work in research and development for Dupont and Motorola companies before enlisting in the Navy in 1943. During World War II, he served as an
aviation radar specialist on torpedo-bomber aircraft in the Pacific Theater. He was honorably discharged in 1947 with the rank of Lieutenant, Junior Grade. After serving his country, he returned to Illinois and taught math at Colfax High School. In 1949, Bud and Jewel moved their family to Normal, Ill. where he taught math at University High School at Illinois State University, as well as teaching science at the university. During that time, he completed his Master of Science Degree in Education at the University of Illinois, and began work on his doctorate in Education. In 1956, he accepted a faculty position at New York University in New York City, where he was able to complete his doctoral research. In 1959, he earned his Ph. D. from the University of Illinois in Counseling and Guidance. His dissertation research focused on group counseling, which was in its early stages of development, especially for educational settings. He again returned to Illinois in 1959 to serve as a guidance counselor as well as chemistry and physics teacher at University High School at Southern Illinois University and in 1962 served as University High's Assistant Principal. Dr. DeWeese was appointed Chief of Party for Southern Illinois University's normal school development project in South Vietnam, sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development. Stationed in Saigon, from 1963 to 1967, he provided leadership for Vietnamese educators as they built several schools and developed curriculum for training teachers. He then returned to Carbondale, where he was appointed Director of Advisement at the College of Education at Southern Illinois University. Dr. DeWeese completed his professional career at Southern Illinois University as a Professor of Guidance and Counseling. He retired in 1975, and enjoyed golf, bridge, family and travel. He was member of Carbondale Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow. Dr. DeWeese is survived by his wife Jewel; his twin sister Clare Quinn of Gross Pointe, Mich. ; sister and brother-in-law Madalon and Cal Self of Magnolia, Texas; daughters Kathleen O'Dell of Anchorage, Ark. ; and a daughter and son-in-law Deborah and Charles Troutman of Seattle, Wash. ; son and daughter-in-law David and Jerion DeWeese of Urbana, Ill. ; son and daughter-in-law Kurt and Diana DeWeese of Springfield, Ill. ; grandchildren Aaron DeWeese; Angela Phelan; Roger O'Dell; Adam DeWeese; Ambre Torbett; Shawna DeWeese; Kyle DeWeese; Marissa DeWeese; and great-grand children Annelise Phelan; Mitchell Phelan; Caitlin Phelan; Emma DeWeese; and McKayla Torbett. Dr. DeWeese is preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Myrle DeWeese. Funeral services will be at 7:30 p. m. today in Crain Funeral Home in Murphysboro, with the Unitarian Minister William Sasso officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 7:30 p. m. today at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are suggested for the SIU Foundation or the Rotary Paul Harris Foundation and will be accepted at the funeral home.
Rosa M. Noto
ROYALTON -- Rosa M. Noto, 94, of 311 S. Dean Street, Royalton, Illinois died at 11:36 a. m. Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2002, in Herrin Hospital. Rosa was born Nov. 8, 1907, in Marion to Frank and Rosemary (Licata) Cavalier. She married Joe Noto June 14, 1925, in Johnston City. He preceded her in death on Nov. 13, 1975. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Jackie Noto of Zeigler; daughter-in-law, Angie Noto of Zeigler; a sister, Frances Cheeca Vancil of Murphysboro; three grandchildren, Jim Noto and his wife, Karen, of Mulkeytown, Marsha Rowland and her husband, Jack, and Joe Noto, all of Zeigler; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter and a nephew, Joe Ray Smith of St. Louis, Mo. She was also preceded in death by her parents, two sons, Frank and Jimmy Noto, three brothers and four sisters, Jennie Smith, Lillie and Nellie Cavalier and Mary Miller. Rosa was a member of the St. Aloysius Catholic Church and Alter Society in Royalton. She retired as a seamstress from Smoller Brothers in Herrin and was a member of the International Ladies Garment Workers' Union. Funeral services for Mrs. Noto will be held at 11 a. m. today, Jan. 5, 2002, at the St. Aloysius Church in Royalton, with Father Brian Barker officiating. Burial will be at the St. Aloysius Cemetery, east of Royalton. Visiting hours are from 9 until 10:45 a. m. Saturday at Vantrease Funeral Home in Royalton.

STEELEVILLE -- Olinda Catherine Wilson, 90, died at 1:30 a. m. Friday, Jan. 4,4, 2002, in St. Ann's Healthcare Center in Chester. Services will be at 1 p. m. Sunday in St. John's Lutheran Church in Bremen, with the Rev. Edwin A. Reuter officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be after 4 p. m. today and from 7:30 to 11 a. m. Sunday at Wilson's Funeral Home in Steeleville, and from 11 a. m. to noon Sunday at the church. Memorials may be made to the church. Mrs. Wilson was a homemaker. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Bremen and the Randolph County Farm Bureau. She was born Aug. 11, 1911, in Steeleville to William L. Beisner and Adele (Mevert) Beisner. She married Rudolph Wilson on May 6, 1934, in Steeleville. He died March 23, 1994. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Ralph and Patsy Wilson of Steeleville; two grandchildren, Marland Wilson of Chester and Karen Modde of Valley Park, Mo. ; and two great-grandchildren, Cody and Ashly Wilson. Her parents, one daughter, Evelyn, one sister, Adele Grefe, one brother, Lawrence Biesner, and one grandson, Ronald Wilson, also preceded her in death.
Thelma Odle
WEST FRANKFORT -- Thelma M. Odle, age 90, of West Frankfort, died at 7:15 p. m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002 at the Franklin Hospital in Benton. She was born July 31, 1911 in Williamson County, Illinois to Irvin Ice and Clara (Lockman) Ice. She married Frank Odle and he preceded her in death July 5, 1977. Survivors include a daughter Norma Hall of Thompsonville, a son and daughter-in-law Cecil and Lois Odle of West Frankfort; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters, Pearl Nolen and Essie Wilson both of West Frankfort and Irma Poole of Thompsonville, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Frank; by a son-in-law, Les Hall; a grandson, Richard Odle and by one brother and three sisters. She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in West Frankfort and was a homemaker. Funeral services for Thelma Odle will be at 11 a. m. today, Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002 at the Parker-Reedy Funeral Home in West Frankfort with Rev. Denny Steed officiating. Burial will be in the East Fork Cemetery

Helen Browning
CHRISTOPHER -- Helen Browning, 86, died at 6:20 a. m. Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, at home. Services will be at 10 a. m. today in Gilbert Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dean Guyman officiating. Burial will be in Mulkeytown Cemetery. Mrs. Browning was a homemaker. She was a member of the Christian Church in Mulkeytown and Order of the Eastern Star. She was born March 10, 1915, in Mulkeytown to Walter and Elfie ( Furlow) Copeland. She married Paul Browning on Oct. 1, 1957. He died Jan. 17, 1979. Survivors include three sons, Norman Jackson of Mulkeytown, Harvey Jackson of Christopher and Larry Jackson of Reno, Nev. ; two stepdaughters, Betty Baker of Marion and Shirley Riley of Mount Vernon; a special friend, Mary Ann Payne; eight grandchildren; 10 great- grandchildren; and one sister, Ruby King of Christopher. Her parents, six brothers and four sisters also preceded her in death.

VALIER -- Nathan W. Brown, 71, died at 5:20 p. m. Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, in West Side Care Center in West Frankfort. Services will be at 2 p. m. Sunday in Gilbert Funeral Home, with the Rev. Harl Ray Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Mulkeytown Cemetery. Visitation will be after 6 p. m. today at the funeral home. Mr. Brown retired as an auto mechanic after 30 years at Janello Texaco. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, and was an
Army veteran of the
Korean War. He was born Jan. 7, 1930, in Christopher to Stanley and Della (Phillips) Brown. Survivors include his children and their spouses, Stan and Tina Brown of West Frankfort, Clara and Rick Avery of Marion, and Lindell and Suzanne Moyers, Linda and Tom Haywood and Mike and Denise Moyers, all of Valier; one brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Sandy Brown of Granite City; one sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Bill Fann of Zeigler; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. His parents, two brothers and one sister preceded him in death.
Madeline Randolph Hand
CARBONDALE -- A memorial service for Madeline Randolph Hand, 95, of Auburn, Ala. will be hold at 10 a. m. Jan. 23, 2002, at Wesley Retirement Center, 1365 Gatewood Dr. , Auburn, Ala. , with the Rev. Sid Lock officiating. Mrs. Hand died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, in Wesley Terrace, where she had resided since 1996. Mrs. Hand was born May 21, 1906, in Lost Creek, W. Va. , daughter of Scott Fitz Randolph and Della Rowand Randolph. She graduated from Union High School, Benwood, W. Va. in 1924, and attended West Liberty State Normal School just long enough to obtain a teaching certificate and meet her future husband, George Henry Hand. She began teaching second grade in Benwood in 1925 to help support her then widowed mother and six younger brothers and sisters. She taught for six years and married George Hand on June 10, 1931, in Morgantown, W. Va. He, too, was a teacher, ending his career as Professor of Economics at Southern Illinois University. He died in 1992. Mrs. Hand was active in church and civic affairs in all the cities and towns in which they lived. These groups quickly learned to rely on her intelligence, trustworthiness and willingness to take on the tough jobs. She enjoyed reading, especially history, and was a formidable competitor at the bridge table. She is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Randolph and Dianna Hand of Paducah, Ky. , grandson, Kelley and wife, Vicki Hand of Little Rock, Ark. , and great-grandson Brock Hand of Little Rock, Ark. ; son and daughter-in-law John and Roberta Hand of Auburn, and grandson, Robert Hand of Lewiston, Idaho. Two brothers and sisters-in-law, Dale and Mary Katherine Randolph and Herbert and Jeane Randolph, also survive. Four brothers, Willard, Alfred, Myles and Ross Randolph, and a sister, Donna Stiles, preceded her in death. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Wesley Terrace Fountain of Love Fund in lieu of flowers. Frederick's Funeral Home of Auburn, Ala. is in charge of arrangements.
