MATTOON -- Robert L. Thompson, 88, of Mattoon passed away 6:05 a.m. Sunday (March 23, 2003) in Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center, Coles County.
Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday in First Presbyterian Church, Mattoon, with the Rev. Dr. John P. Besore III officiating. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Mitchell-Jerden Funeral Home, Mattoon. Burial will be in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens, Mattoon, with military rites. Mr. Thompson was born Aug. 30, 1914, in Terre Haute, Ind., the son of Robert Barr and Cretoria A. Walker Thompson. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and a 50-year member of Kiwanis International and Mattoon Lodge 260 AF&AM. He served as a communications specialist and close air support coordinator in the Navy during World War II, achieving the rank of second class petty officer. He was stationed at Great Lakes Naval Training Center and the San Diego Naval Station prior to being assigned to USS LCI 498 of Admiral William F. Halsey's third fleet at Pearl Harbor in February 1945. Mr. Thompson participated in the assaults on Guam and Okinawa, as well as the occupation of Japan. He was a member of Mattoon VFW Post 4325. He was the retired owner of Thompson Lincoln Mercury in Mattoon. The automobile business was his life. He enjoyed watching high school sports, especially those his son Doug was involved in, and socializing with his many friends and business associates. He married Rhea Jean "Chris" Christy on June 25, 1950.
Surviving are his wife; sons, Stephen A. Thompson and wife Kathy and Gregory M. Thompson and wife Gloria, all of Mattoon; Doug K. Thompson and wife Deborah of Eureka, Mo.; Robert E. Thompson and wife Martha and William Thompson and wife Andrea, all of Terre Haute, Ind.; daughter, Mary Margaret Dooley and husband Jerry of Terre Haute; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister.

Edgar Tolliver of Louisville dies at 101
LOUISVILLE -- Edgar Tolliver, 101, of Louisville died 7:30 a.m. Sunday (March 23, 2003) in Clay County Hospital, Flora.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Louisville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Thompson officiating. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Neal Funeral Home, Louisville. Burial will be in Orchard Hill Cemetery, Louisville. Memorials: United Methodist Church.
Mr. Tolliver was born Nov. 25, 1901, in Hoosier Township, Clay County, the son of Isom and Hallah Blair Tolliver. He was a retired farmer and member of United Methodist Church and men's Sunday school class, Louisville. He married Alene Blair Tolliver in 1937 in Mitchell, Ind.
Surviving are his wife; son, Donald Tolliver and wife Barbara of Silver Lake, Ohio; daughters, Rhuann Caliper and husband Jerry of Mascouttah; grandchildren, Rhuann Natae Medico and husband Alex; Jarid Blair Caliper; Heather Harms and husband Andy.

Crittendon
DECATUR -- Nettie Lee Crittendon, 88, of Culver City, Calif., died March 21, 2003, after a short period of illness.
Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday in St. Peter's AME Church with Pastor Coates officiating. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in Walker Funeral Service and Chapel with 7 p.m. Order of the Eastern Star rites by St. Mary Chapter 65. Burial will be in Macon County Memorial Park, Harristown.
Nettie Lee Crittendon was born June 17, 1914, in Brownsville, Tenn., to David and Susie Ryan Hawkins. Mrs. Crittendon was reared in Decatur within the original Antioch Baptist Church Community on Greenwood Avenue, of which she was an early member. She attended Decatur public schools before moving to Chicago, where she graduated from Madame C.J. Walker's legendary Beauty Culture School in the mid-1930s. She and her twin sister, Wilma, performed as a duo in dancing contests at swing era clubs such as The Grand Terrace, where Ella Fitzgerald and other jazz greats were featured artists.
Mrs. Crittendon returned to Decatur and reacquainted with a high school friend, Willard J. Crittendon. They married Oct. 24, 1941, into a 54-year union, which ended in Mr. Crittendon's death in 1995.
Mrs. Crittendon was a devoted mother and wife, who generously volunteered her talents to PTA, March of Dimes and Order of the Eastern Star Lodge. She will be remembered for her extraordinary dedication to her family. She moved to Los Angeles, Calif., in 1999, where she enjoyed three pleasant years with family and friends.
Surviving are her son, David Crittendon, Los Angeles; grandson, Pomo Crittendon, Los Angeles; niece, Patricia Hammons Lewis and husband John, Carbondale; sister-in-law, Lottie Campbell and husband Taft, Rockford; many nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Lawrence; and sisters, Mae and Wilma.

DECATUR -- Susie A. O'Laughlin, 46, of Decatur made a peaceful transition Wednesday (April 2, 2003) in Decatur Memorial Hospital.
Visitation will be noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday in Dawson & Wikoff West Wood Street Funeral Home. Burial will be at a later date in Point Pleasant Cemetery.
Mrs. O'Laughlin was born Oct. 10, 1956, in Decatur, the daughter of Murton O. Lee and Virginia Mae Morris Lee. She was a homemaker. She married James O'Laughlin on May 21, 2000.
Surviving are her husband; children, Mike Lee, Donald O'Laughlin, Christopher O'Laughlin and Padtrick O'Laughlin, all of Decatur; Mike Ford of Atlanta; James O'Laughlin of Tennessee; stepdaughter, Robin O'Laughlin of Decatur; brother, Merton O. Scroggins of Effingham; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.
