MATTOON -- Robert L. Thompson, 88, of Mattoon passed away 6:05 a.m. Sunday (March 23, 2003) in Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center, Coles County.
Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday in First Presbyterian Church, Mattoon, with the Rev. Dr. John P. Besore III officiating. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Mitchell-Jerden Funeral Home, Mattoon. Burial will be in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens, Mattoon, with military rites. Memorials: Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center METS Program or First Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund.
Mr. Thompson was born Aug. 30, 1914, in Terre Haute, Ind., the son of Robert Barr and Cretoria A. Walker Thompson. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and a 50-year member of Kiwanis International and Mattoon Lodge 260 AF&AM. He served as a communications specialist and close air support coordinator in the Navy during World War II, achieving the rank of second class petty officer. He was stationed at Great Lakes Naval Training Center and the San Diego Naval Station prior to being assigned to USS LCI 498 of Admiral William F. Halsey's third fleet at Pearl Harbor in February 1945. Mr. Thompson participated in the assaults on Guam and Okinawa, as well as the occupation of Japan. He was a member of Mattoon VFW Post 4325. He was the retired owner of Thompson Lincoln Mercury in Mattoon. The automobile business was his life. He enjoyed watching high school sports, especially those his son Doug was involved in, and socializing with his many friends and business associates. He married Rhea Jean "Chris" Christy on June 25, 1950.
Surviving are his wife; sons, Stephen A. Thompson and wife Kathy and Gregory M. Thompson and wife Gloria, all of Mattoon; Doug K. Thompson and wife Deborah of Eureka, Mo.; Robert E. Thompson and wife Martha and William Thompson and wife Andrea, all of Terre Haute, Ind.; daughter, Mary Margaret Dooley and husband Jerry of Terre Haute; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister.

Edgar Tolliver of Louisville dies at 101
LOUISVILLE -- Edgar Tolliver, 101, of Louisville died 7:30 a.m. Sunday (March 23, 2003) in Clay County Hospital, Flora.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Louisville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Thompson officiating. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Neal Funeral Home, Louisville. Burial will be in Orchard Hill Cemetery, Louisville. Memorials: United Methodist Church.
Mr. Tolliver was born Nov. 25, 1901, in Hoosier Township, Clay County, the son of Isom and Hallah Blair Tolliver. He was a retired farmer and member of United Methodist Church and men's Sunday school class, Louisville. He married Alene Blair Tolliver in 1937 in Mitchell, Ind.
Surviving are his wife; son, Donald Tolliver and wife Barbara of Silver Lake, Ohio; daughters, Rhuann Caliper and husband Jerry of Mascouttah; grandchildren, Rhuann Natae Medico and husband Alex; Jarid Blair Caliper; Heather Harms and husband Andy.
Davis
NIANTIC -- Lloyd D. Davis II, 37, of Niantic passed away from his battle with cancer Sunday (March 23, 2003) in his home.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Mount Auburn Cemetery
with Pastor Dennis Blankenship officiating. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday in Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home. The family requests casual dress for the visitation and services. Memorials: Earthmover Credit Union for Lloyd's wife and children.
Lloyd was born Nov. 12, 1965, in Nuremburg, Germany, the son of Lloyd and Jackie Sussen Davis. He graduated from Mount Zion High School. He worked for IDSCO Building Supply as a truck driver. He married Virginia L. "Jenny" Whitehead on Jan. 6, 1998, in Niantic.
Surviving are his wife; children, Ashley, Amanda and Lloyd III, all at home; stepchildren, Taylor and Erin Patton, at home; parents of Decatur; mother-in-law, Virginia Clayton of Niantic; sisters-in-law, Donna Mathias of Mount Zion; Deanna Hamm of Illiopolis; Bobbie Dingman of Niantic; Kim Copeland of Niantic; brother-in-law, Donald Whitehead of Niantic; grandmother, Bessy Demarco of North Miami, Fla.; grandfather, Lloyd B. Davis of Vandalia; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Wilford "Bill" Sussen; grandmother, Viola P. Stine; brother-in-law, Brian L. Dingman; niece, Breanna Eastman; and stepsons, Jarrod and Joseph Patton.

DECATUR -- William R. "Bill" Gardner, 95, of Decatur died 6:45 p.m. Sunday (March 23, 2003) in Fair Havens Christian Home.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Homes with visitation one hour before services. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery.
Bill was born Dec. 24, 1907, in Fredricksburg, Ky., the son of Henry Clay and Fannie B. Nalley Gardner. He was a member of the former Third United Methodist Church, a World War II
Army veteran and retired in 1975 from Cash Co. after 25 years of service.
He married Josephine "Joe" Watkins on Jan. 11, 1942, in St. Charles, Mo. She preceded him in death May 4, 1993.
Surviving are his daughter, Elaine Kostenski and husband Walter of Decatur; grandchildren, Robert Kostenski and wife Cyndi of Decatur; Gary Kostenski of Florida; Janice Veltkanp and husband Stanley of White Pines, Tenn.; sisters, Lela Wilber of Decatur; Katherine Dillman and husband Don of Goreville; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one sister.

DECATUR -- Gary Lane Landers, 57, of Decatur died 7:05 p.m. Saturday (March 22, 2003) in St. Mary's Hospital.

Mr. Landers was born Dec. 1, 1945, in Cowden, the son of William Lane and Waunitta Mae Wiley Landers. He was an aircraft mechanic with Texas International Airways and an Air Force veteran.
Surviving are his mother of Decatur; daughters, Tiffany Lane Landers of Branson, Mo.; Shawn Michele Landers of Carl Junction, Mo.; son, Joshua Shane Landers of Denver, Colo.; six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father.

DECATUR -- Sister M. Beronia Sappok, OSF, 90, of the Hospital Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis, died 7:50 a.m. Monday (March 24, 2003) in St. Francis Convent, Springfield.
Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Motherhouse, Springfield, with 6:30 p.m. prayer service. The Eucharistic Celebration and Rite of Christian Burial will be celebrated 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in St. Francis of Assisi Church at the Motherhouse, Springfield, with Father David Eckelkamp, OFM, celebrant. Burial will be in Crucifixion Hill Cemetery, Springfield. Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, Springfield, is in charge of arrangements.
Sister M. Beronia, the former Amalie Sappok, was born March 23, 1913, in Mainia, Silesia, Germany, the daughter of Kostantin and Anna Stach Sappock. She entered the Congregation on Nov. 22, 1933, and professed her religious vows June 13, 1937. Sister served the community at hospitals in Illinois and Wisconsin as a nursing assistant and in the convent. From 1964 until 1987, she served at St. Mary's Hospital in Decatur. She returned to the Motherhouse in 1987, due to failing health.
Surviving are several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephew; her Franciscan Sisters, with whom she shared her life for 70 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers; and four sisters, including her twin sister, Florentine Solisch.
