DECATUR -- Henry W. Bond, 64, of Decatur departed this life Tuesday (Feb. 18, 2003).
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. John's Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. J.C. Rice, Pastor of Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, officiating. Visitation will be two hours before services in the church. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Walker Funeral Service and Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Henry was born May 6, 1938, in Brownsville, Tenn., to the union of Willie and Mary Transor Bond. He was a member of Brownscreek Missionary Baptist Church in Brownsville until moving to Decatur, where he attended Mount Calvary M.B. Church. He worked as a construction worker until becoming disabled.
He leaves not to mourn but to cherish memories of him, his sisters, Clara (Vernon) Rawls, Virginia (Willie) Wade, Annette (L.T.) Topps, Margie Reed and Alberta Bond, all of Decatur; Nellie Bond of Nashville, Tenn.; Betty Butler of Antioch, Tenn.; brother, Jackey L. Bond of Decatur; a host nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, three sisters and five brothers.

DECATUR -- Mary Ellen McGroarty Gallup, 71, of Decatur died 12:10 p.m. Friday (Feb. 21, 2003) in Decatur Memorial Hospital.

Mary was born July 21, 1931, in Rexfield, Iowa, the daughter of John J. and Elizabeth Skidmore McGroarty. She grew up in Des Moines, Iowa. She was a member of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, precinct committeewoman for South Wheatland Township, member of the National Association of Letter Carriers, holding offices locally, statewide and nationally and American Legion Auxiliary and was a volunteer for the Macon County Chapter of the Red Cross. Mary's first job was with the Iowa Inspection Bureau for 10 years. In Decatur, she worked for Wolverine Insurance for five years. In 1971, she went to work for Kemper Insurance as a transcriber and after 14 years she was downsized.
Her avocation was the NALCA. She held all local offices. She was elected to the state board in 1968, where she held the presidency for six years. In 1978, she was elected to the national board for eight very rewarding years. Rex and Mary met in 1954. She married Rex Gallup on Dec. 24, 1954. She joined her husband selling uniforms to letter carriers for Brookfield Uniform. Another group she wanted to acknowledge is American Legion Post 105, where she served as the president for one year. Her years with the Legion were very rewarding and hopefully she made many friends there. Her hobbies were crossword puzzles, a Jeopardy junkie (she went to Chicago twice) and gambling. She enjoyed revisiting her money all around the country and on cruise ships. She had a good life. Her final pun -- she had a "merry gallup."
She leaves her husband; daughter, Mickalene "Mickey" McDaniel and husband Jim of Decatur; grandchildren, David Matthew and Kathryn Elizabeth McDaniel (the joys of her life), both of Decatur; the Esther and Cecil Damery family.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.
The family of Mrs. Gallup would like to extend their sincere thanks to Dr. Perry Guaglianone and the Cancer Care Center for the care they gave to Mary Ellen.
Gentry
DECATUR -- James Everett Gentry Sr., 80, of Decatur died Friday (Feb. 21, 2003).
Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in J.J. Moran & Sons Funeral Home with visitation 6 to 8 p.m. Monday. Burial will be in Point Pleasant Cemetery, Long Creek.
James was born June 30, 1922, in Decatur, the son of Grover Cleveland and Ada England Gentry. He worked as a millwright for 37 years at A.E. Staley Mfg. Co., retiring in 1983. James proudly served our country in the
Army/Air Corps during World War II. He married Opal Louise Clark on March 17, 1945, in Decatur. She preceded him in death July 4, 1966.
Surviving are his sons, Jim (Diana) Gentry of Decatur; Mike (Kathy) Gentry of Oakley; Tom (Debbie) Gentry of Springfield; sister, Annie Webb of Decatur; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, four sisters and four brothers.

DECATUR -- Beth Taylor, 89, of Decatur left this world for a better place Thursday (Feb. 20, 2003) in her home.

Ms. Taylor was born Feb. 25, 1913, in Brownsville, Tenn., the daughter of Peter and Lucy Williams Taylor. She was a member of House of Faith Church of God in Christ. She had worked as a nurse's aide at North Park Nursing Home.
She leaves not to mourn but to cherish memories of her, her son, James Palmer of Decatur; daughter, Louise Palmer of Decatur; sister, Lucy Rawls of Mount Vernon; eight grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Willie T. Moore; four brothers; two sisters; one grandson and one great-granddaughter.
Atteberry
MACON -- Roy E. Atteberry, 82, of Heath, Ohio, formerly of Macon, died Friday (Feb. 21, 2003) in Selma Markowitz Care Center, operated by Hospice of central Ohio.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday in First Baptist Church of Heath with Pastor Randy Wagner officiating. Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Heath Chapel of Henderson, Van Atta & Johnston Funeral Service, Heath. Burial will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in South Macon Township Cemetery, Macon. Mr. Atteberry was born June 15, 1920, in Macon, the son of the late Emmett and Maggie Musgraves Atteberry. He served in the Navy during World War II. He retired from the Newark Air Force Base and was a member of NARF and the Heath Senior Citizens. He served as a deacon for the First Baptist Church of Heath.
Surviving are his wife, Elsie L.; sons, Robert Atteberry and wife Gwen of Tampa, Fla.; Thomas Atteberry and wife Maureen of Cary, N.C.; William Atteberry and wife Cindy of Chesapeake, Va.; grandchildren, Nicole Atteberry of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; Tiffany Atteberry-Brown and husband Scott of Ocala, Fla.; Michael and Caitlin Atteberry, both of Cary, N.C.; stepgrandchildren, Michelle Garland and husband Dan of Marco Island, Fla.; Kelly Harris and husband Bill of Chesapeake, Va.; great-stepgrandchildren, Cody and Mackenzie Garland, both of Marco Island; Payton Harris of Chesapeake; sisters-in-law, Betty Atteberry of Lovington; Catherine Atteberry of Macon; Norma Atteberry of Elberta, Ala.; brother-in-law, Harold Naber and wife Mildred of Decatur; many other relatives and friends.

DECATUR -- Billy Lee Eckart, 51, of Decatur went to be with the Lord Thursday (Feb. 20, 2003) in St. Mary's Hospital surrounded by his family.

Billy was born Aug. 17, 1951, in Decatur, the son of Bill L. and Phyllis J. Brockway Eckart. He was a truck driver for Roehl Transport Services.
Surviving are his parents of Moweaqua; son, Jeff Eckart of Decatur; daughter, Julie Eckart of Tower Hill; grandsons, Justin Eckart and Undra Ingram of Tower Hill; sisters, Sharon Pressley and husband David, Janet Bentley and husband Chuck and Karen "Jeanie" Bonnett and husband Dan, all of Decatur; Kim Reeves and husband Cody of Moweaqua; brother, Steve and wife Terry of McMinnville, Tenn.; many special nieces and nephews, not to mourn but to treasure memories of him; special friends, Rosemary and Leon Drew and Aunt Janet Pressley and Swede.
He was preceded in death by his infant sister, Connie Sue, and beloved Grandma and Grandpa Eckart.
The family wants to express sincere thanks to St. Mary's Hospital floors 4th, 6th, ICU, and Heritage Manor, Mount Zion, for their loving care for Billy.
Peck
DECATUR -- Myrtle "Mickey" Peck, 83, of Decatur passed away 1 p.m. Friday (Feb. 21, 2003) in ManorCare Health Services after a long struggle with Alzheimer's.
Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Homes. Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in Kankakee Memorial Gardens, Kankakee. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Monday. Memorials: Alzheimer's Association or Multiple Sclerosis Association.
Mickey was born April 14, 1919, in Kankakee, to the late Richard Henry and Mary Ann Knox Allie. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Decatur, an associate member of St. John's Methodist Church in Sebring, Fla., and a longtime member of the Kiwanianne Club of Decatur. Mickey was employed by Osco Drug and Turk Furniture Co. as a sales associate in Kankakee. She married Clarence Wischnowski on May 8, 1937, in Kankakee. He preceded her in death April 17, 1961. She married Stanley Russell Peck in September 1969 in Kankakee. They then moved to Decatur. After moving to Decatur, Mickey and her husband, Stanley, opened Peck Auto Supply Inc. She was the office manager until her retirement in 1984.
Surviving are her husband; daughters, Peggy LaCost and husband Larry of Kankakee; Karen Williams of Metropolis; stepson, Michael Peck and wife Karen of Akron, Ohio; sisters, Gladys Patchett and husband Bill of Arlington, Texas; Elaine Tolman of Fort Worth, Texas; grandson, Larry LaCost Jr. and wife Krista of Hesperia, Calif.; granddaughter, Donna Monk of Metropolis; three great-granddaughters.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Dorothy Feldman; and brother, Harold Allie.
The family would like to extend heart-felt thanks to the entire staff at ManorCare Health Services and Dr. Paul Stanley for their love and care all these years.
Mickey was not only a homemaker, but a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

Scardello
DECATUR -- Frank P. Scardello, 83, of Lancaster Calif., formerly of Decatur, died Monday (Feb. 17, 2003).
Graveside services will be 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 11, in Sarasota Memorial Park, where he will be buried next to his wife. Memorials: Hospice Care Center or Alzheimer's Association, 919 N. Michigan Ave. Suite 1100, Chicago, IL 60611.
Mr. Scardello was born in 1919 in Decatur and moved to Sarasota, Fla., in 1955. He resided in Sarasota until 1996 when he moved to Lancaster, Calif., with his son and daughter. He was a decorated war veteran and served his country proudly during World War II in the 14th Tank Battalion.
Surviving are his sisters, Joanne Sea and Virginia Bruemaster of Decatur; daughter, Pamela Sheldon and husband Jack; son, Michael Scardello and wife Jayne; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.
