Short

SHELBYVILLE -- Thomas Wiley Short, 54, of Shelbyville died 2:13 p.m. Sunday (Feb. 16, 2003) in Pana Community Hospital. Tom will be remembered fondly; he was a pillar of the community and a friend to all.

Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday in Christ Tabernacle, Herrick, with Pastor Tom Suey officiating. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the church. Burial will be in Neoga Memorial Cemetery, following the services Thursday. Howe & Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, is in charge of arrangements. Tom Short loved his grandchildren and his church: In his memory, memorials may be given to the Education Fund for the grandchildren of Thomas W. Short or Christ Tabernacle Building Fund.

Tom was born Aug. 18, 1948, in Mattoon, the son of James Avery and Frances Jean Wiley Short. He was a 1966 graduate of Neoga High School, attended Millikin University in Decatur and graduated from Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. He served in the National Guard during the Vietname War. He was one of the owners of Leach-Wilson Chevrolet Buick Co. in Shelbyville, where he worked for more than 30 years. He loved his hometown of Neoga and was always quoted as saying, "All roads lead to Neoga."

He was a member of Christ Tabernacle, Herrick, where he was active in the choir and the children's ministries. He enjoyed sports and was an avid runner. He completed three marathons, all with his children and enjoyed running in the River-to-River Relay across Southern Illinois. He was very involved in his community: He coached Shelbyville Little League Baseball for many years, worked on the "chain gang" at the Shelbyville Rams home football games for more than 20 years, served on the Board of Directors of First Federal Savings & Loan, Shelbyville, former chairman of the Shelby Memorial Hospital Board of Directors and enjoyed participating in the Celebrity Reader Program at the local schools. He married Deborah Downs Leach on Sept. 6, 1968, in Neoga.

Surviving are his wife; children, Amy Short Johnson of Chicago; Angela Leach Short of Shelbyville; Brett Thomas Short and wife Rachel of Herrick; mother of Neoga; brothers, James William Short and wife Linda of Nashville, Tenn.; Robert Leon Short and wife Ruth of Neoga; sister, Mary Kathryn Short Drake and husband Steve of Charleston; father-in-law, William H. Leach of Shelbyville; brother-in-law, Jay Howard Leach and wife Sue of Shelbyville; sister-in-law, Sarah DeHaven Chapman
of Corona, Calif.; grandchildren, Connor Christian Short, Lauren Elizabeth Sims, Grant Jameson Sims, Parker Thomas James Short and Tucker William Wiley Short.

He was preceded in death by his father, in 2000; infant sister, Jo Ellen Short in 1958; and mother-in-law, Dorothea Downs Leach in 1998.

He will always be remembered for the love and faithfulness that he had for his family, his church family and for the special place that he had in his life for his grandchildren.

Steel

CHARLESTON -- Joshua Daniel Steel and Kristine Nichole Steel, infant twins of Anthony Jerome and Nichole Angela Garcia Steel, were stillborn 12:15 a.m. and 12:20 a.m. Saturday (Feb. 15, 2003) in Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center, Coles County.

Memorial services will be at a later date in Oceanside, Calif. Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, Mattoon, is in charge of arrangements.

Surviving are their parents of Charleston; brother, Isiah Nicholas Steel, at home; grandparents, Mary Housley of Oceanside; Hector Garcia and Sophia Garcia, both of West Covina, Calif.; great-grandmother, Aurora Roque of Oceanside; grandparents, Charles Steel and Carol Steel of Oceanside; great-grandmother, Alee Steel of San Diego, Calif.

Harmon

SIGEL -- Emma L. Harmon, 73, Sigel, retired seamstress, died Sunday (Feb. 16, 2003).

Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday, St. Michael The Archangel Church, Sigel. Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Swengel-O'Dell Funeral Home, Neoga, with 7 p.m. prayer service. Burial: St. Michael Cemetery, Sigel. Memorials: St. Michael's School, Sigel.
