DECATUR -- Barbara Walker Silva, of Salinas, Calif. died Nov. 24, 2002.
A celebration of life was in her home and well-attended by family, friends and students. She rests at Chapel of the Chimes, Oakland, Calif. Memorials: Animal Friends, P.O. Box 51083, Pacific Grove, Calif.
Mrs. Silva was born Barbara Jean Walker Jan. 6, 1927, to Frances and Oscar Walker of Decatur. A talented young singer, she attended Decatur schools and left home as a teen to pursue her career after auditioning locally for the Ben Bradley Orchestra. Her
success included performances with many big bands, jazz and popular groups, including the June Christy Ensemble, Buddy Rich Band and Chris Ibaniz, and she performed in Las Vegas as the opening act for Frank Sinatra's Rat Pack. She graced many stages such as the Top of the Mark and the Fairmont, San Francisco; Jack London Square, Oakland; and in Lake Tahoe, Calif. As a member of the American Federation of musicians, she was contracted with Decca Records and did voiceover commercials for the tourism industry.
She retired in Monterey County, Calif., where she became a beloved vocal teacher. Her students now perform widely in dramas, musical theatre and other performing arts. This elegant, stylish and dynamic beauty was known as a gourmet chef and a warm, entertaining hostess. She was a philanthropist to several animal care organizations. She is greatly missed.
Surviving are her sister, Lois Walker Bates; nieces, Kathleen Walker Crum and Rose Marie Dooley Perius; nephews, James Walker Jr.; Stephen Walker; Harold Sloatman; Dan Sloatman; and many relatives in Kuaui, Hawaii.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Charles MacFerrin, Len Baldaramos and Frank Silva; sister, Eileen Dooley; and brothers, James and Stanley Walker.
