Wilcox
PALMER -- Warren R. Wilcox, 79, of Palmer died 4:20 a.m. Friday (Jan. 17, 2003) in St. John's Hospital, Springfield.
Services will be 10 a.m. Monday in Shafer Funeral Home, Taylorville, with the Rev. Gene Kirk officiating. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in Morrisonville Cemetery. Memorials: American Heart Association or American Kidney Fund.
Mr. Wilcox was born July 11, 1923, in Blue Mound, to Orval and Rena Morrison Wilcox. He was a retired farmer. He was a member of Advent Christian Church in Palmer, Masonic Lodge in Morrisonville, VFW in Taylorville and an honorary lifetime member of Twist-N-Twirl Square Dance Club, Taylorville. He was a former member of the carpentry union in Taylorville and served in the
Army in the 102nd Infantry during World War II. He married Doris Hayes on Dec. 14, 1946, in Taylorville.
Surviving are his wife; sons, Larry Wilcox of Springfield, Bruce Wilcox and wife Donna of Palmer; granddaughters, Mary Christine Bloome and husband Clayton of Pawnee; Roberta Warren Harker and husband Hank of Galesburg; Laura Lee Wilcox of Palmer; great-grandchildren, Jacob and Rebecca Bloome, both of Pawnee; brothers, O.R. Wilcox and wife Helen of Decatur; Jack Wilcox and wife Mitzi of Tennessee; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Helen Smith; and brother, Wayne Wilcox.
Carlson
CLINTON -- The Rev. Timothy Charles Carlson, 53, of Alpena, Ark., formerly of Clinton, died 1:50 p.m. Wednesday (Jan. 15, 2003).
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday in Peter Cartwright Methodist Church, Pleasant Plains. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Monday in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Kenney. Mr. Carlson was born Aug. 6, 1949, in Clinton, the son of Charles "Pid" and Evelyn Westray Carlson. He was a graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University and Garret-Evangelical Theological Seminary. He was a member of Rotary International Arabian Horse Association, Arabian Riders & Breeders Inc., and a cast member of the Great Passion Play in Eureka Springs for five years. He served in churches in Illinois and Arkansas and was president pastor in Alpena United Methodist Church and Bergman United Methodist Church. He was co-founder of the Kairos Retreat Center in Eureka Springs in 1980. He married Alice Sikes Dec. 22, 2000, in Eureka Springs.
Surviving are his wife; sons, Christopher D. Carlson, East Alton; Jonathan C. Carlson of Alpena; daughter Laura M. (Ben) Althuithius of El Paso, Texas; stepdaughters, Jamie (Matthew) Sikes East of Newport News, Va.; Jenny B. Sikes of Auburn, Ala.; Laura A. Sikes of Baton Rouge, La.; father-in-law, Frank M. Cochran Jr. of Bradley, Ark.; sister, Shirley Annette (Larry) Schoch of Clinton; nephews, David Schoch of Clinton; Curtis Schoch of Holiday Island, Ark.; niece, Stacy Mandrell of Clinton.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Ruby Charlene Carlson.
The family acknowledges the assistance of his many friends and family members to the family during his illness.
Ryan
ATLANTA -- Vern Thomas Ryan, 78, of Atlanta entered into rest with our Lord Jan. 11, 2003, at his winter home in Mesa, Ariz.
Services will be Monday in Mesa with memorial services at a later date in Atlanta.
Vern was born Jan. 14, 1924, in Lincoln. He was a boiler engineer for the state of Illinois. He was a World War II veteran and proudly served his country as a master sergeant in the Air Force. He was a member of the Shriners. In his later years, he was known as "The Licorice Man" who dispensed smile-producing quips and joy to those who visited his licorice stand.
Surviving are his wife of 20 years, Marianne; daughters, Patricia Ryan of Phoenix, Ariz.; Pamela Hayes of Decatur; grandchildren, Amy Hayes of Boston, Mass.; Angie Cook of Decatur.
Goldie Reed of Taylorville dies at 105
TAYLORVILLE -- Goldie May Reed, 105, of Taylorville died 10:45 a.m. Friday (Jan. 17, 2003) in St. Vincent Memorial Hospital, Taylorville.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in Glen Haven Memorial Gardens, Taylorville. There will be no visitation. Shafer Funeral Home, Taylorville, is in charge of arrangements. Memorials: Meadow Manor Nursing Home.
Mrs. Reed was born July 27, 1897, in Kansas, the daughter of Frances and Susy Coleman Moon. She was a retired teacher and homemaker and a member of Davis Memorial Christian Church. She married Wesley H. Reed in Paola, Kan.
Surviving are her daughter, Vivian Ruth Aiken of Taylorville; son, Norman Dwane Reed of Taylorville; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; one great-great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

DECATUR -- Margariete Maryann "Gordy" Buckner, 78, of Springfield died 11:12 a.m. Friday (Jan. 3, 2003) in Memorial Medical Center, Springfield.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in Bisch & Son Funeral Home, Springfield, with the Rev. Vaughn Beeman officiating. Visitation will be one hour before services. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Springfield.
Mrs. Buckner was born March 1, 1924, in Gibson City, the daughter of Othar and Gladys May Smock. She was a member of Mound Chapel Church of God for several years while in Decatur. She worked as a cook for Topps' Big Boy in Decatur and was a homemaker. She married Ralph Buckner in August 1973 in Decatur.
Surviving are her husband; sons, Homer Lee Gordy and wife Connie of Las Vegas, Nev.; Douglas L. Gordy and wife Lois of Decatur; brothers, Junior Smock of Russellville, Ky.; Charles Smock of Hardy, Ark.; sisters, Katherine Foster of Danville; Mary Schmidt of Gibson City; father, Othar Smock; stepdaughter, Sarah May Brett of Fulton, Mo.; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her mother, daughter, Brenda Jean Boyd, and son, Thomas J. Gordy.

Ewell
DECATUR -- Dana Marsha Ewell, 55, of Champaign died 10 a.m. Saturday (Jan. 4, 2003) in Carle Foundation Hospital after a battle with leukemia.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in Owens Funeral Home, Champaign, with the Rev. Msgr. Albert Hallin officiating. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Monday. Burial will be in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, Champaign. Memorials: University of Illinois School of Journalism, where a scholarship will be established in her name, or Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Ms. Ewell was born July 4, 1947, in Covington, Ky., the daughter of James and Dorothy Ewell. She was on the faculty and director of placement for the communication department School of Journalism at the University of Illinois. Before coming to U of I, she was on the faculty of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. Before entering the teaching field, she was an assistant managing editor of graphics for the Decatur Herald & Review. She received her master's degree from Eastern Illinois University and a bachelor's degree from the University of Kentucky. She was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority, Society of Professional Journalists, Illinois Press Association and National Press Photographers Association. She joined her life with David Petrina in 1975.
Surviving are David Petrina; cousins, nieces, nephews and a family of friends.
