She is best described as a mother and family matriarch first, then as an artist, poet and author. While her six children were growing up, she kept busy during the day cooking meals, doing laundry, gardening and playing with her children, although at night, her literary talents emerged. Her love of family and friends is clearly displayed in her five published books, "Open Line" (1979), "Life is Love and Love is Life" (1982), "Memories from Mother's Cream Pitcher" (1993), "Bits 'N' Pieces of Our Fifty Years" (1997) and "Howdy, Howdy, Howdy" (2002). Even after Betty was diagnosed with lung cancer, she continued to work on her final book, "Between You and Me," which will be finished by her family. This book was dedicated to the memory of Betty and will be a collection of stories from family and friends on their life's interactions with this wonderful woman. During her illness, Betty still managed to write to our 535 U.S. Congressional Representatives and Senators, urging them to fight to keep "In God We Trust" on our currency. She was a member of Mount Zion General Baptist Church, where she served as chorister and member of the choir. She was a firm believer in God and spread her spirituality to everyone she met. She married John Robert Newby on Aug. 3, 1947, in her home in Charleston.
