Joseph Santille of Roselle
A funeral Mass for Joseph Santille, 78, will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, at St. Raymond Church, Elmhurst Rd. (Route 83) and Lincoln St., Mount Prospect.
Born in Chicago, Mr. Santille died Wednesday, May 12, 1999, at Alexian Brothers Medical Center. Interment will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery.
Mr. Santille was employed as a construction worker, and is survived by his son, Michael Santille; daughter, Carole (Ken) Olson; two grandchildren; brother, William (Charlotte) Santille; and sister, Theresa (Richard) Poteracki.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today, at Friedrichs Funeral Home, 320 W. Central Rd. at Northwest Hwy., Mount Prospect, and from 8:30 a.m. until the time of the Mass Saturday, at the church.
Eleanore R. Sawall
Services for Eleanore R. Sawall (nee Rice) 83, a longtime resident of Lincolnwood, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, at Alleluia Lutheran Church, 4055 Book Rd., Naperville.
Born Sept. 1, 1915, in Carney, Mich., she died Friday, May 7, 1999, at Copley Memorial Hospital in Aurora. Interment will be in Mount EmblemCemetery, Elmhurst.
Eleanor married Charles C. Sawall II on June 7, 1933, and they moved to the North Side of Chicago. Together they owned and operated Sawall Cartage Company in Chicago (now Illinois State Motor Services). They moved to Lincolnwood in 1954 and upon retirement in 1972, they spent much of the year at their home in Lake Geneva, Wis.
Survivors include her daughter, Janis (Joseph) Curl of Longboat Key, Fla.; son, Charles C. III (Edith) Sawall of Naperville; grandchildren, Michelle (David) Czopek, Joe (Megan) Curl, Christopher (Marguerite) Curl, Brandt (Marcella) Myers, Ellen (Stacy) Womack and Samantha Sawall; 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Dorothy Berquist of Carney, Mich.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1992; daughter, Joan Myers; and parents, Richard and Martha Victoria (nee Rouse) Rice.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today, at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville, and from 9 a.m. until the time of the services Saturday, at the church.

Joseph Selvaggio of Addison
Prayers for Joseph Selvaggio, 69, will be said at 9 a.m. Saturday, at Salerno's Rosedale Chapels, 450 W. Lake St. (3/4 mile west of Bloomingdale/Roselle Rd. ), Roselle. Mass will follow at 10 a.m. at St. Philip the Apostle Church. Interment will be in Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
He was the beloved husband of Angela (nee LoSurdo); devoted father of Frank (Pia) and Pat (Deann) Selvaggio; dear brother of Angela (Mikhale) DeFrancesco and the late Carmella Ceglia; and fond grandfather of Angela, Angelica, Joseph, Albarosa, Pasquale and Theodore Selvaggio.

Melvin Slattengren of Wheaton
A memorial Mass for Melvin Slattengren, 87, a 15-year resident of Wheaton and formerly of Berwyn, will be celebrated at 4 p.m. today, at St. Mark Church, 303 E. Cole Ave., Wheaton.
Born May 13, 1911, in Center City, Minn., he died Tuesday, May 11, 1999, at Central DuPage Hospital, Winfield.
Mr. Slattengren had been a member of the Kiwanis Club in both Berwyn and Wheaton.
He was the beloved husband of Marcella Muehlfelt (nee Burckal); loving father of Amanda (Walter) Conklin; stepfather of Mary Ann Schmitz, Linda (Ron) Schultz, Virginia Sampson, Sindy (Dan) Rogers, Sue (John) Givens, Shirley (Jim) Harte, Sally (Paul) Craig and Steve (Teri) Muehlfelt; dear grandfather of Melinda (Robert) McGuffin, and David and Jason Gaddy; and stepgrandfather of numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Thomas L. Spang of Batavia
Funeral Mass for Thomas L. Spang, 66, will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, at Holy Cross Church, Batavia, where he will lie in state from 9 a.m. until the time of the Mass.
Born Sept. 25, 1932, in Aurora, the son of John and Hildegard (Stull) Spang, he passed away Tuesday, May 11, 1999, at Delnor-Community Hospital, Geneva.
Tom was a 1950 East Aurora High School graduate. He worked for more than 45 years for Barber Greene in Aurora and then for Barber-Greene Caterpillar, Inc., in DeKalb until his retirement.
He served as a board member for both Aurora Central Catholic School and for Catholic Charities. He was a member of Holy Cross Churchin Batavia, where he served as a board member of Education and Parish Council. Tom served as a Scout Master for St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Aurora, was a former 4-H leader in Batavia and served on the Louise White School PTO. He enjoyed flower gardening, reading and special times with his beloved grandchildren.
He was a section #29 representative for Woodheaven Lakes Association in Sublette, Ill., where he and his family enjoyed more than 21 years of camping. He was a devoted husband, and loving father and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife, Joan F. Spang of Batavia; six children, John Spang of Batavia, Mary (Mike) Albrecht of Sugar Grove, David Spang of Batavia, Laura Spang of Batavia, Diane (Bryan) Appel of North Aurora and Gregory Spang of Chicago; nine grandchildren, Jessica Spang, Patrick, Michelle and Daniel Albrecht, Cristi, Kelly and Eric Spang, and Davis and Rose Appel; brother, Gerald (Donna) Spang of Batavia; two sisters, Choral (Robert) Watgen of Aurora and Joan Kane of Millington; and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

George E. Strom Sr. of Mundelein
A memorial service for George E. Strom Sr., formerly of Milwaukee, Wis., will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 22, at Community Protestant Church, 418 N. Prairie Ave., Mundelein.
Born July 6, 1929, in Milwaukee, Mr. Strom died Sunday, May 9, 1999, at Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.
He had been a resident of Mundelein for almost 30 years and was very active in church and the Boy Scouts, both in Milwaukee and Mundelein.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Jean E. (nee Poth); children, George Jr. (Lynda) of Lake, Mich. and Joan of Rolling Meadows; grandchildren, Jeffery and Christopher; brother, Clarence (Gertrude); sisters, Althea Fischer, Violet Kloth, Bonida Schoenecker, Jane (Robert) Heup and Una (Donald) Barbee; sistersin-law, Carol (John) Forde, Ruth (Robert) Spranger and Doris (Edward) Piacentine; a special part of the family, Nancy (Timothy) Lewis and Kelly; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one sister.

Dorothy deRivera of Vernon Hills

Born March 1, 1922, in Libertyville, she passed away Thursday, May 13, 1999, at home. Interment services will beheld at 1 p.m. Monday, at Ascension Cemetery, Libertyville.
A Vernon Hills resident since 1997, she was a 1940 graduate of Libertyville High School. She graduated from Mundelein College in Chicago and received her masters degreefrom Northeastern Illinois University. Dorothy was an elementary school teacher for many years and was listed in Who's Who of American Women and the National Register of Prominent Americans.
Surviving are her children, Sue Anne (John) Paslayski and Michael (Linda) deRivera, both of Vernon Hills, Jim deRivera Jr. of Antioch and John (Linda) deRivera of Boca Raton, Fla.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brother, Earl (Yvonne) Behm of Nellysford, Va.; and dear friends, James (May Jackson) deRivera of Barrington.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Michael and Erma Behm; son, Charles deRivera; and sister, Alice Schroeder.

Gladys Essig Barnes of St. Charles
Funeral Mass for Gladys Essig Barnes will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday, at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 2900 E. Main St., St. Charles, with Father Edward Seisser officiating.
Born Oct. 31, 1908, in Melrose Park, the daughter of George and Anna (nee Korrell) Essig Sr., she died Thursday, May 13, 1999, at Provena Pineview Care Center, St. Charles.
Mrs. Barnes was the last owner of Essig Hardware Store which was located in St. Charles for many years. The hardware store was started by her father in 1921, and it later became one of the first True Value Hardware stores in the country. Gladys attended Mt. St. Mary's High School and was an active member of both St. Patrick and St. John Neumann Catholic Churches.
She is survived by her brother, George (Mary Ronan) Essig, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George Barnes, in 1963; her brother, Wilfrid Essig in 1997; her brother, Raymond Essig in 1970; and two sisters, Esther Marie Essig in 1924 and Shirley Essig Winston in 1984.
Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services Monday, at the church.

Kenneth J. Batek
Kenneth J. Batek, 73, of St. Pete Beach, Fla., formerly of Chicago, died Monday, May 10, 1999, at the Palms of Pasadena Hospital.
Born in Berwyn, he had served in the Coast Guard during World War II and was later the owner of Mr. Kenne's Powder Box in Chicago. He was also a member of the VFW, American LegionPost #305, and D. A. V. #13, and was an avid gardener and fisherman. Mr. Batek had moved to Florida in 1973.
Surviving are his wife, Ingeborg Batek; sons, David Batek of Glen Ellyn and James Batek of Chicago; daughters, Linda Kennington of Chillicothe, Ill., Sandra Reliford of Chillicothe and Lisa Batek of Pekin, Ill.; sister, Shirley Prestero of St.
Pete Beach; and four grandchildren.

D. Annette Burkey of Beach Park
Funeral services for D. Annette Burkey (nee Whiteman), 73, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, at Congdon Funeral Home, 3012 Sheridan Road, Zion.
Born Sept. 12, 1925, in Zion, she died Thursday, May 13, 1999, at Victory Memorial Hospital in Waukegan. Interment will be in Pine View Memorial Park, Beach Park.
Annette attended the University of Illinois in Champaign as well as the Art Institute of Chicago. She married Virgil E. Burkey, a Marine Air Force pilot, on Feb. 4, 1946. After her husband died in an air crash in 1950, she married his brother, Gerald R. Burkey, on Aug. 16, 1953. Gerald served in the Merchant Marines and later co-owned Whiteman and Fry Lumber Company which was founded by Annette's father, Paul Whiteman.
Mrs. Burkey was a lifelong member of Christ Community Church (formerly Christian Catholic Church) in Zion and the church's Christian Women'sClub. She was also very active with gourmet and bridge clubs. Annette enjoyed traveling and one of her special hobbies was decorating and outfitting miniature dollhouses.
Annette's artistic talents were appreciated in many areas. She was best known for her apple head carvings and she also enjoyed doing beautiful calligraphy.
Annette owned her own gift and craft shop called `Annette's Apple Art and Accents' in Zion for many years. She later managed the `Little Flower Gift Shop' at St. Therese Hospital in Waukegan until 1993. For the past six years, she served as business assistant for her son, Paul, at his orthodontic office in Vernon Hills.
Mrs. Burkey was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Dorothy Whiteman; first husband, Virgil Burkey; second husband, Gerald Burkey; and son, Jerry Burkey Jr.
She was deeply loved and will be missed by her sister and brother-in-law, Evangeline and Bernie Beem of Beach Park; daughter-in-law, Sheila Burkey of Gurnee; daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Neal Harrison of Naperville; sonand daughter-in-law, Dr. Paul and Alisa Burkey of Libertyville; daughter and sonin-law, Nancy and Eric Knutsen ofBristol, Wis.; grandchildren, Steven (Cathy) Burkey, Ryan Burkey, Randy (Natalie) Harrison, Dana (Kurt) Karbusicky, Erica Knutsen, Luke Burkey, Seth Burkey and one unborn grandchild; six great-grandchildren and two unborn great-grandchildren; and many special aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and beloved friends.
