Alma B. Steadman, resident of Lake Bluff since 1953, passed away on March 27, 2010 at age 84 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Alma was the beloved wife of Lewis for more than 63 years, a devoted mother to their children Carol, Lewis Jr., Holly and Robert and the proud grandmother of Scott and Ben Steadman. She is also survived by her sister Janet Schwartz, sister-in-law Theresa Koegel, many nieces, grandnieces, nephews and grandnephews. Alma loved to travel and was an avid sports fan. Her favorite activity was spending time with her family and many friends. She always had a smile on her face and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. A celebration of life will be held in May. Michael VanScoy

Michael VanScoy, 38, of Lake Bluff, Illinois passed away on March 23, 2010. He was born February 18, 1972 in Hinsdale, Illinois, the son of Mary H. Coan and step-father Robert G. Shaw. He was the youngest of Mary’s three sons. Mike graduated from The University of Michigan in 1994, following in the footsteps of his oldest brother David VanScoy, his mother Mary Coan and her father Robert Coan. He was active in Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, graduating with honors and a Bachelor of Science degree, emphasis in Business Administration. Mike attended Lake Forest High School, graduating in 1990, where he excelled in the classroom and on the LFHS ice hockey team, serving as co-captain. Mike was the founder and owner of MVS Building Corporation, a high end residential builder in Lake Forest. Previously, he was co-founder of a state-of- the-art fully integrated sports complex located in Lansing, Michigan. Previously and following college graduation, Mike was a senior consultant with Arthur Andersen in Chicago where he worked on resolving major issues such as the Orange County, California bankruptcy and Bureau of Indian Affairs governance matters. He was an avid fan and participant in sports (especially hockey and golf), physical fitness and car racing. He is survived by his mother Mary and step-father Bob of Marco Island, FL and Lake Forest, IL; his brother Bob VanScoy (Barbara) of Charlotte, NC; his sister- in-law Kara Clark (Frank) of Glenview, IL; his Uncle Bob and Aunt Dee Coan of Palm Harbor, FL; his nephews William and Hunter VanScoy of Charlotte, NC and his nieces Ashley and Grace Clark of Glenview. He is also survived by his Husky dogs Sadie and Diablo. Mike was predeceased by his brother David VanScoy and his beloved dog Bo. A private family graveside service was held at Lake Forest cemetery. Additional information is available through Wenban Funeral Home in Lake Forest. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made payable to Placing Paws of Illinois, c/o Stephanie Pietsch at 303 Brice Ave, Mundelein, IL 60060 or The University of Michigan, c/o Robert Shaw at Post Office Box 9, Lake Forest, IL 60045. Mike’s parents Mary and Bob thank his friends and business associates and their community and church family for sympathetic support and love in this most grievous and challenging time following the loss of their beloved Mike – a son, brother and friend – beloved by so many people.

Klinge; loving mother of John (the late Margaret), Virginia, Robert, Ann (Robert) Talan, Carol, the late Joseph and James; proud grandmother of 9 and great grandmother of 4; devoted daughter of the late Phillip and Esther Peterson Malizola; dear sister of Florence Malizola, the late Harry and Arthur (Lucille) Malizola; aunt of many. Vernon L. Schatz

Vernon L. Schatz, 90, died in Lake Forest, IL, on January 7, 2012. Vern served in the U.S. Navy Seabees in New Guinea during World War II. The majority of his professional career was focused on computers and information systems, beginning with General Electric (GE) in 1952. He was a member of GE’s computer department from 1960 – 69, where he held a number of management positions, including Manager of the GE 225/235 family of computers. In 1969, he joined the Jewel Companies as Vice President of Information Systems. There he initiated and managed the first supermarket electronic point of sale development in the U.S., establishing the industry standard for such systems. He also initiated the development of Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) between Jewel and its bank, First National Bank of Chicago (FNBC). While at Jewel, Vern defined the fundamentals for a personal data card, which later became known as the “smart card.” He was granted the fundamental patent on this development. The U.S. Patent Office regards this application as the basic patent for smart cards in the U.S. In 1975, Vern founded Network Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFTI), a subsidiary of FNBC, where he continued to develop and implement computerized electronic funds transfer among retail transfer networks. Vern received the Computer Pioneer Award from the IEEE in 2000 and the Iowa State University Professional Achievement Citation in Engineering Award in 2002. He received a B.S. in Engineering from Iowa State University and an M.B.A. from Xavier University in Ohio. Vern is survived by his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth (nee Lynch); children Daniel (Debra), Theodore, Lisa Almond (Brian) and Lynne Halverson (Robert); grandchildren Crystal, James and Carl (Brianna) Schatz and Scott Almond; siblings Robert (Phyllis), Clara Tsuris, Ernest (Ann), and Lester (Audrey); and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Church of St. Mary, 175 E. Illinois Road, Lake Forest, IL 60045; the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 26 Broadway, 14th Floor, New York, NY 10004; the Arthritis Foundation, P.O. William Morell, Jr.

William “Bill” Morell, Jr., 91, died in Lake Forest, IL on January 4, 2012 after a long illness followed by a stroke. At the very beginning of his career in early 1942 after Pearl Harbor Bill volunteered for the U.S. Navy and served for three and a half years. As part of his service he was assigned to the U.S. Military Mission in Moscow. For most of his career he served in the C.I.A. and State Department in areas of national security and foreign economic affairs. At the end of his career he was C.E.O. of U.S.-Taiwan Council. Throughout his life Bill was active in the Episcopal Church. He was a Eucharistic Minister in St. Gregory’s Episcopal Church in Deerfield, IL and was involved in Church Youth Programs both in the U.S. and overseas. He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years Patricia Leonhard Morell who was his strong support throughout his career and was involved in various ways in many of his activities. He is also survived by his daughter, Lynn Morell Noble of Colorado Springs, four grandchildren Jason, Darcy Wilcoxson, Jessica and Stephanie Noble, eight great grandchildren and two sisters Mrs. John Parker and Mrs. Robert Fraser. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942. Funeral service 10:00 A.M., Monday, January 9, 2012 at St. Gregory’s Episcopal Church, 815 Wilmot Road, Deerfield, IL 60015. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
