Virginia M. Scott

Virginia M. Scott, aged 87, of 520 S. Pearl St., Macomb, died Wed., April 14, 1999 at McDonough District Hospital in Macomb, Ill. She was born on Feb.11, 1912 in Tuscola, Ill to John G. and Emily Warren Patton. She married Keith F. Scott on Oct. 12, 1938 in Macomb, Ill. He died June 6, 1991. She is survived by two sons: K. Raymond Scott of Glenview, Ill and John W. Scott of Richmond, Va; one daughter: Joan Scott O’Hare of Peoria, Ill.; five grandchildren: Kevin Scott, Kimberly Yagelski, Keith H. Scott, Thomas S. O’Hare, and Emily J. O’Hare; two sisters: Dorothy Grigsby and Esther Nielsen, both of Macomb, Ill. She was preceded in death by her parents. Mrs. Scott received a B.E. Degree from Western Illinois State Teachers College in 1932 and taught school for 5 years in Macomb. she was initiated into Chapter K of P.E.O. in 1949, and served as past president. She was a 55-year member of the Eastern Star and a member of the XXMD Club. She was a charter member of the McDonough District Hospital Auxiliary, member of the First Presbyterian Church and of its church Morning Circle, both of Macomb. Services were held Saturday at the Dodsworth-Piper-Wallen Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Green and Rev. Charles Kriner presiding. Burial was in Oakwood cemetery. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or the McDonough District Hospital Auxiliary.

Robert L. Harper

Robert L. Harper, 77 of 240 E. Main St., Good Hope, Ill died Saturday, April 17, 1999 at the McDonough District Hospital, Macomb. He was born Jan. 3, 1922 in McDonough County, the son of George and Maude Bevard Harper. He married Julia Mae Colbert on Sept. 12, 1948 in Blandinsville, Ill. He is survived by his wife Julia; two daughters, Patty (Larry) Moore of Jacksonville, Ill and Peggy (Steve) Kreps of Champaign, Ill; two sons, Michael (Joyce) of Macomb, Ill and Mark (Marie) of Thayer, Ill; nine grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, four sisters, Vera Vogler, Helen Sperry, and Fawn Cramer all of Macomb, Ill and Joann Lovejoy of Bushnell, Ill and one brother, Arlo of Bushnell, Ill. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Paul and Delbert; three sisters, Lois (in infancy) , Donna, and Mary; and two grandsons, Alecs and Mitchell. He was educated in Good Hope and Blandinsville and farmed his entire life in Hancock and McDonough Counties. He enjoyed attending baseball games and other sporting events, hunting and showing milking shorthorns at local fairs and at the Illinois State Fair. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Sargent-Worthington Funeral Home in Macomb with the Rev. Gerald Seabaugh officiating. Burial was in the Good Hope cemetery, Good Hope, Ill. Memorials can be made to the Good Hope Fire Department and Rescue Squad.

Alfa I. Ellis

Alfa I. Ellis, 88, of Macomb, died at 4:08 p.m. Friday April 16, 1999, at McDonough District Hospital. She was born on July 2, 1910 in Minot, ND, the daughter of Clarence and Winnie Rawlins Nelson. She married Floyd Ellis on September 21, 1929, in Palmyra. Mo. He died March 15, 1979. Mrs. Ellis is survived by one son, David Ellis of Macomb and one grandson, Daryl Ellis, of Macomb. She was preceded in death by one son, Keith Ellis and one brother, Emery. Mrs. Ellis lived on a farm southwest of Industry from 1942 - 1984. She formerly lived in Schuyler County. Services were Wed. in the Sargent-Worthington Funeral Home with Rev. Ron Green officiating. Burial was in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens. Memorials may be made to the Arthritis Foundation.

John E. Carlson

Last rites for John E. Carlson, 82, Smithshire, were held Saturday, April 17, at 10 a.m. at Corman Memorial Home, Roseville. Interment was in Ellison cemetery. Mr. Carlson died Tuesday, April 13, 1999 in Methodist Medical Center, Peoria. Memorials may be made to the Warren County Heart Fund. A son of Chester and May Miller Carlson, he was born January 19, 1917 in Warren County. He married Lila Wicks, February 16, 1947 in Rosetta, who survives. He also leaves: two sons, Rodney of Cameron and David of Keokuk, IA; two daughters, Cheryl Skees of Monmouth and Carol Bishop of Tempe, AR; 10 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Raymond and Kenny, both of Monmouth; and a sister, Louise Booth, of Smithshire. His parents, a brother and two sisters preceded him in death. Mr. Carlson farmed in Warren County until 1957, moved to Garden Grove, CA, and returned to the Monmouth and Smithshire areas in 1972, where he continued to farm. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army from World War II.

Margaret M. Staat

Memorial services for Margaret Merillat Staat were held Tuesday, April 13, at 1:30 p.m. in the sanctuary of the Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church, Dallas, TX. Interment was in Restland Memorial Park. Mrs. Staat, a resident of Dallas since 1949, died at her home on April 9, 1999. Memorials may be made to the Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church, 8600 Skyline Drive in Dallas, or to the American Cancer Society, 8900 Carpenter Freeway, Dallas TX 75247. She was born October 24, 1912, in Winfield, IA. She married Francis Henry Staat II, who preceded her in death in 1990. Mrs. Staat leaves: a brother Herbert Christian Merillat, Washington, DC; three children, Christine Staat Rogers and her husband Howard in Dallas, Henry and Merillat Staat and his wife Janice in Norman, OK, and Katherine Staat of Austin, TX; four grandchildren, Peggy Honea, Dallas, Louise Honea, Grand Rapids, MI, Merillat Saint-Amand, Charleston, SC, and Francis Henry Staat III, Norman, OK. She was a graduate of Monmouth College and was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. The Staats were charter members of Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church, where she was active in numerous social and charitable activities of the congregation.

Martha A. Petermann

Funeral services for Martha A. (Martie) Petermann, 68, Oquawka, were held Wednesday, April 21, at 2 p.m. in Turnbull Funeral Home, Oquawka. Rev. Suzanne Geer officiated and interment was in Oquawka cemetery. Mrs. Petermann died April 17, 1999, at 12:15 a.m. at her home. Memorials may be left to the Oquawka Ambulance Service, The daughter of Gus and Mary Baldwin Hignight, she was born January 3, 1931 in Roseville. She married Gordon F. Petermann, March 27, 1948 in Waukegan, who survives at home. She also leaves: a daughter, Terry S. Petermann, Galesburg; a son, David Petermann, Oquawka; a brother, Delbert Hignight, Macomb; and three grandchildren. Her parents and two brothers preceded her in death. Mrs. Petermann attended schools in Gladstone and Oquawka. She was employed at Sylvania Electric in Burlington, IA; for Formfit Co. on Monmouth, and later at Admiral Division of Maytag in Galesburg for 16 years. In recent years, she and her husband operated the Oquawka Bowling Lanes in Oquawka.

Ulysses A. 'Bud' Faralli

Ulysses A. 'Bud' Faralli, age 78, of Freeport, Illinois, formerly of Abingdon, passed away at 6:38 a.m. Friday, April 16, 1999 at the Freeport Memorial Hospital in Freeport, Illinois. He was born January 30, 1921 in Farmington, Illinois, the son of Antonio and Julia Forneris Faralli. He married Dorothy Helen Kennedy on September 11, 1948 in Galesburg, Illinois. She survives. Other survivors include one son, Anthony (Veronica) Faralli, Moline, Illinois; two daughters, Kathleen (Michael) Cafferata, Dupo, Illinois and Amy (John) Grider, Freeport, Illinois; five grandchildren, Gina Faralli, Katherine and Matthew Cafferata, and Abigail and Zachery Grider and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Patrick Joseph Faralli, several aunts, uncles, sister-in-laws and brother-in-laws. He graduated from Abingdon High School with the class of 1939 and attended the University of Illinois and Knox College in Galesburg. He served in the US Army during WW II as a medic in the 121st EVAC. He was part of many front line invasions in the Pacific Theatre. He was also part of the Occupational force of Japan after the war ended. After the war, he and his wife made their home in Abingdon where he was a small business owner for over 50 years. He first started with his father at Faralli’s Billiard Parlor in downtown Abingdon. He then became owner of the K&G; Grocery Store where he sponsored many Little League Baseball Teams. He later became the owner of Bud’s Package Liquor Store on Rt. 41 in Abingdon until retiring in 1984. He was a charter member of Abingdon Kiwanis Club, where he was involved in many activities that included the widening of Rt. 41. He was also a charter member of Abingdon Chamber of Commerce, was Director of Civil Defense during the Cold War, and was instrumental in the development of Abingdon Nursing Home. He was a very active member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Abingdon and served on the building committee for construction of Sacred Heart Church in the early 1960’s Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Abingdon with Father Francis Oman officiating. Burial was in Abingdon cemetery with military rites conducted by the Abingdon American Legion Post 381. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel in Abingdon was in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Abingdon, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Dupo, Illinois; St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church and St. Joseph Catholic Church, both in Freeport, Illinois.

Maxine Frakes

Maxine M. Frakes, age 80, of Avon, passed away at 7:50 a.m. Sunday, April 25, 1999, at Abingdon Blue Bell Towers in Abingdon. Born June 25, 1918, in Plymouth to Randolph and Myrel Waymack Daniels, she married Lucius Arvien Frakes on March 17, 1934, in Missouri. He passed away May 13, 1973. One son and one brother also preceded her in death. Surviving are five grandchildren, Dennis Frakes, of Denver and Daniel Frakes, Alan Frakes, Sandy Frakes and Julie Sloan, all of Avon; and 14 great-grandchildren. She operated the Industry Restaurant in Industry for seven years. She then worked for Gale Products from 1958 to 1978. She later was a cook at Avon Nursing Home. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Greenbush cemetery in Greenbush with Rev. Rick Kerr officiating. Corman Memorial Home in Avon was in charge of the arrangements.

Lyle E. Gray

Lyle E. Gray, 86, a resident of the Elms Nursing Home in Macomb, died at 4:46 a.m. April 26, 1999, in McDonough District Hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 29, in the First Baptist Church at Macomb with the Rev. Gerald Seabaugh officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens at Macomb. The family were to receive friends from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 28, in Clugston-Tibbitts Funeral Home in Macomb. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the YMCA Senior Citizens Center. He was born on Aug. 8, 1912, in Raritan Township, the son of Earl and Beulah Perrine Gray. He married Nina Heap on May 14, 1933. She died on July 27, 1958. He married Wanda Griffith on Dec. 28, 1958. She preceded him in death on Oct. 6, 1992. Survivors include sons Ron, Jim and Roger Gray, all of Macomb, and Dan Gray of Anderson, Iowa; a daughter, Mrs. Marlin (Elaine) France of Macomb; a stepson, Robert 'Fear' Fosdyck of Macomb; 26 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law, Everett Heap and Harry Griffith of Macomb, and a sister-in-law, Louise Carver of Macomb. He was preceded in death by his parents, both wives and brothers, Orland and Eldon, who died as an infant. Gray moved in 1936 to Industry where he farmed and raised dairy cattle. He moved in 1963 to Macomb where he ran Gray’s F.S. for two years. He worked at WIU from 1964 to 1977, then worked at River Run Apartments from 1977 until his retirement in 1982. Gray was a member of the First Baptist Church in Macomb and was active in the YMCA Senior Citizens Center at Macomb.

Gatha L. McDonald

Gatha L. McDonald, 83, of Colchester, formerly of Swan Creek area, died at 2:26 p.m. Friday, April 23, 1999 in McDonough District Hospital. She was born on Nov. 2, 1915, in Brooklyn Township to Benjamin H. and Gertrude A. Fowler Hillyer. She married Grant Perterson. She later married Raymond McDonald. They are both deceased. She is also preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Delbert Hillyer and two sisters; Dorthea Schisler and Athaleen Hillyer. She is survived by one daughter; Marjorie Sullivan of Macomb, one brother; Willis Gale Hillyer of Shelbyville, TN, one sister; Maber Peterson of Roseville, a special friend; Leo Mowen of Roseville, two grandsons: Gene A. Moon of Lincoln and Marion Jay Moon of Macomb, one granddaughter; Brenda J. Vawter of Macomb, and five great-grandchildren; Ingrid Moon of Lombard, Alia and Alexander Moon of Lincoln, Jayson Moon of Macomb, and Jessica Vawter of Macomb. She lived in the Swan Creek and Roseville areas in Warren County most of her life. She worked as a homemaker for Home Health Care at the Warren Achievement Center in Monmouth. Funeral services were Monday in the Clugston-Tibbits Funeral Home. Burial was in Blackburn cemetery near Brooklyn.

Edwin Davis

Edwin N. Davis, age 83, of 480 Scotch Elm Lane, Galesburg, passed away at 11:25 a.m. Friday, April 16, 1999, at his home. Born June 11, 1915, in Avon to William Earl and Bess Melton Davis, he married Virginia Trumpy on January 1, 1938, in Avon. She survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Robert (Susan) Lafferty of Oquawka, Mrs. A. William (Melinda) Ruttledge of St. Louis and Mrs. David (Cynthia) Leary of Singapore; three granddaughters; one brother of Avon; and one sister of Avon. A senior vice president of the former First Galesburg National Bank, he also was a director and secretary of the board of directors. He worked at Tompkins State Bank in Avon, the Bank of America in Hollywood, California and the Federal Reserve Bank in Chicago. He was a graduate of the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin in Madison and the National Commercial Lending Graduate School at the University of Oklahoma in Norman. A former president of the Galesburg Chamber of Commerce and the Galesburg Club, he was a former member of the Galesburg Rotary Club and the Soangetaha Country Club. He was a former treasurer and board member of the Galesburg YMCA. At the time of his death, he was treasurer and director of Dundale cemetery Company. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Private services were at Avon cemetery with Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel in charge of arrangement. Memorials may be made to the Community Hospice of America or Galesburg Public Library.

Katherine Malley Lohe

Katherine Malley Lohe, age 71, of Tempe, Arizona, passed away at 4:00 a.m. Friday, April 16, 1999 in Mesa Lutheran Hospital, Mesa, Arizona. She was born June 24, 1927, in Monmouth, the daughter of L. Edward and Esther Baer Malley. She married Richard Lohe. He survives. She was preceded in death by her father and a sister, Edwina. Other survivors include her mother, three daughters, Mary Kaye Vigil, Pamela Frasier and Betsy Cable; one sister, Barbara Reihm, of Avon; one brother, James Malley, of Avon; and two grandchildren. She was an elementary school teacher at Littleton Elementary School, Cashion, Arizona, retiring in 1988. She was a life-member of the National Education Association, and volunteered at voting polls during elections. Cremation rites were accorded. Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. April 21, 1999 in Tempe Mortuary, 405 East Southern Ave., Tempe. Memorials may be made to the Hospice of the Valley, 1510 East Flower Street, Phoenix, Arizona, 85014, or the American Cancer Society, 2929 East Thomas Road, Phoenix, Arizona 85016
