Ida P. Hinds of Elburn
Funeral services for Ida P. Hinds (nee Smith), 91, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, at Conley Funeral Home, 116 W. Pierce St., Elburn. The Rev. Hyesung Hong, pastor of Kaneville United Methodist Church, will officiate.
Born Sept. 20, 1907, in Kaneville Township on the family farm, she passed away Wednesday, March 3, 1999, at Delnor Community Hospital, Geneva, following hip surgery. Interment will be in Kaneville Cemetery, following the services.
Mrs. Hinds grew up in Kaneville and attended country schools. As a young woman, she began helping her parents on the farm and learned well the value of hard work and thrifty thinking. On March 3, 1942, she was united in marriage to Buell L. Hinds and they made their home on the Hinds family farm on Main Street Road where they lived and worked all of their lives together. From the hog lots to the hayfields, Ida worked side by side with her husband and never backed away from any task. Her personal passion was her garden, a place that not only brought great bounty, but great pride as well. Every day Ida carried water in two five-gallon buckets at a time, over some 300 feet to her garden. She also performed the same daily trek to her kitchen -- by choice she livedher entire 91 years without running water in her home and only in the early 1980s did she allow a telephone. Having joined the communications generation, however, she not only learned how to `reach out and touch' her family and friends, but how to keep them collared on the line as well.
Surviving are her nephews and their families, Oliver Oleson of Kaneville, and Jerry (Darlene) Hinds and Fred (Millie) Hinds, both of Batavia; and an extended family of dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Buell, in 1981; sisters, Harriett Smith and N. Maude Oleson; and brothers, Bruce, Archie and Charles Smith.
