Margaret Helen Newgard of Mount Prospect for 50 years
Visitation will be from Margaret Helen Newgard (nee Byrne), 74, will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Monday, at Glueckert Funeral Home, Ltd., 1520 N. Arlington Heights Road (four blocks south of Palatine Road), Arlington Heights.
Born May 29, 1924, in Glendale, Calif., she died Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999, at her home. Entombment will be in Memory Gardens Mausoleum.
Mrs. Newgard, a homemaker,was a founding member of Chapter JM of P. E. O. Sisterhood and a former member of the Mount Prospect Women's Club.
She was an active volunteer for numerous Scout organizations and a longtime member of St. Mark Lutheran Church.
She was the loving wife of the late J. Robert Newgard, whom she had married Nov. 29, 1942, in Glendale, Calif.; dearest mother of Richard Newgard of Arlington Heights, Karen (the late Michael) Noland of Antioch and James (Anita) Newgard of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and dear grandmother of Sean Noland and Holly and Will Newgard.

Sidonia O'Donnell of Naperville
A memorial Mass for Sidonia O'Donnell, 82, a resident of Naperville since 1958, will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Monday, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 26 N. Ellsworth, Naperville.
Born Dec. 10, 1916, in Eugene, Ore., she died Wednesday, Feb. 24, 1999.
Mrs. O'Donnell graduated in 1939 from the University of Oregon with a liberal arts degree and went on to receive her bachelor of arts degree in nursing in 1943 from Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. As a registered nurse, Mrs. O'Donnell began working at Edward Hospital in 1959, and served as head nurse in the Emergency Room for 22 years. Until recently she had continued to work for the hospital in the medical records department. Mrs.
O'Donnell was also an
Army veteran, having served as a nurse cadet during World War II. She was recognized many times during her life with awards for her numerous contributions to Edward Hospital and health care, and also entertained many people with her famous rendition of Phyllis Diller over the years.
Surviving are her sons, James O'Donnell of Naperville and Thomas (Carol) O'Donnell of Woodstock; daughters, Patricia O'Donnell and Kathleen O'Donnell, both of Naperville; brothers, Albert (Dorothy) Balle of Eugene and Joe (Jean) Balle of Tigard, Ore.; and grandchildren, Brandon O'Donnell and Lydia O'Donnell, bothof Woodstock.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Mildred (nee Hittingter) Balle; husband, James O'Donnell; and sister, Evelyn Miller.
A memorial visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, at Beidelman-Kunsch Funeral Home, 117 W. Van Buren, Naperville.

Mr. Pintacura was a member of VFW Post 981 and the Arlington Heights Merle Guild American Legion Post 280.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Vivian J. Pintacura (nee Stocco), whom he married July 31, 1947; children, Sam (Claire) Pintacura of Crystal Lake and Angie (Greg) Hill of Lake Zurich; and grandchildren, Carissa and Kevin.

She was the devoted wife of the late George; loving mother of Charles (Athena), Dimitra (Anastasios) Sideris, Nick (Dionysia), Panagiota (Nick) Pappas and Georgia (Nick) Gikopoulos; beloved grandmother of 12; dearest sister of Konstantina (the late John) Deligiannis, Nick (Antonia), John (Georgia) and the late George (late Konstantina) and Anastasios (Voula) Kononelos; sister-in-law of Konstantinos (late Christina) Roumeliotis and Theodosia (the late George) Lahanis; and cherished aunt of many nieces and nephews both here and in Greece.

The Rev. Dr. Ross P. Scherer of Arlington Heights
Funeral services for the Rev. Dr. Ross P. Scherer will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, 1234 N. Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights, IL 60005.
Born March 30, 1922, in Fort Wayne, Ind., he died Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999, at Northwest Community Healthcare Center. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery.
The Rev. Dr. Ross P. Scherer combined a lifelong passion for current events with a distinguished career as an educator of sociology and the pursuit of religious ecumenism. Anative of Fort Wayne, Ind., he graduated from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis in 1943. He received a master's degree in social service administration in 1947 and a Ph. D. in sociology in 1963 from the University of Chicago. Dr. Scherer was an ordained Lutheran minister and professor emeritus of Loyola University. From 1950 until 1963, he taught sociology and social work at Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Ind. He was appointed the first director of research operations for the National Council of Churches of Christ in New York, a position he held from 1963 to 1966.
Dr. Scherer joined the sociology department of Loyola University in 1966, and taught from 1966 to 1990. He had served as its chairman from 1967 to 1969, and as graduate program director from 1969 to 1971 and from 1979 to 1982. His career in sociology focused on complex organizations, religous organizations, health care, work and occupations, and community. Among sociologists, he is best known for his book, `American Denominational Organization,' (William Carey Library, 1980), a comprehensive study of the dominant organizational form of religion in America.
He was a very active member in both the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion and the Religious Research Association, of which he was president from 1975 to 1977. From 1966 to 1984, he was also closely associated with the Review of Religious Research, of which he served as managing, contributing and associate editor. His interest in his field continued into his retirement. `The last time I talked to him on the phone, he was so excited to tell me all about hisnewest project: preparing a paper he was to give at the meeting of the Association of Sociology of Religion later this year,' commented his son, Tom of Oregon.
A resident of Arlington Heights for the past 32 years, Dr. Scherer hadformerly been a very active member of Faith Lutheran Congregation, and since 1988, of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Doris E. Scherer (nee Hoffmeier); children, Rebecca (Marty) Koppel, Thomas (Silvia) Scherer and Mary (Meinrad) Scherer-Emunds; grandchildren, Jennifer, Justin, David, Elizabeth, Stefan and Daniel; great-grandchildren, Amber and Amanda; and brothers, Raymond

Florence Belle Sund of Elgin

Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Svete was stationed in both Austria and Germany. He worked for Abbott Laboratories for 47 years, retiring in 1990. He was a member of Abbott Retiree Men's CLub, Waukegan Moose Lodge #706 and K. S. K. J. St. Joseph Lodge #53.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy; son, Michael (Linda) Svete; grandson, Jeffrey Svete; brothers, Joseph Svete of Park City and Stanley (Betty) Svete of Glendale, Ariz.; sister, Mary Szurovecz of Kenosha, Wis.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Mary Svete (nee Leskovec) and brother, Felix Svete.

Melvin A. Wiere of Lombard

He died Friday, Feb. 26, 1999, at Lexington Healthcare Center, Lombard.

A resident of Lombard for 43 years, Mr. Wiere was a retired vice president of Exhibits Inc. in Franklin Park. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the
Army Air Corps. In addition, Mr. Wiere was an usher at First United Methodist Church in Lombard, one of the coordinators for the Lombard Food Pantry and an active member of Barn Stormers-Radio Controlled Airplane Club. He was also an avid fisherman.
Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Eleanor Wiere (nee Thomas); daughters, Pamela (Michael)Warns, Laurel (Jeffrey Sr.) Barker, Elizabeth (Robert) Swanson, Susan (Thomas) Ryan and Margaret (Mark) Larson; and 12 grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Audrey (Jim) Barker.
Melvin was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Amanda Barker.

A veteran of World War II, Mr. Williams had served in the
Army Air Corps in the Pacific with the 43rd Bomber Group of the 5th Air Force in the Australia,New Guinea and Philippines Campaign from 1942 to 1945.
Survivors include his sons, Russell K. (Jeannine) Williams and Ronald L. (Daria) Williams; daughters, Frances J. (John) Jones, Mary A. (Mark) Ouellette and Barbara J. (James) Goldman; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and sisters, Angeline (Jason) Lapp and Priscilla (the late William) Muchow.

Dorothy Jean Barker MacLean of Winnetka
Services for Dorothy Jean Barker MacLean, 93, will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, at St. Giles Church, 3025 North Walters Ave., Northbrook.
Mrs. MacLean, a longtime Winnetka resident, died Wednesday, Feb. 24, 1999, of pneumonia at the University of Chicago Hospital.
She was a graduate of Colorado College with a masters degree in English from Smith College in 1926. She was a lifelong learner and well known philanthropist having served on the Winnetka School Board and participated in a number of educational initiatives atthe University of Chicago, Dartmouth College, Smith College, Colorado College, The Newberry Library, the Young Artists Programs at Ravinia, The School of the Art Institute and Chicago Symphony.
She was the wife of the late John A. MacLean Jr.; mother of David Barker (Carol) MacLean, Barry Lee (Mary Ann) MacLean and the late John A. III (Joy) MacLean; grandmother of 12; and great-grandmother of 10.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the time of services Tuesday, at the church.
