Michael Jai Richards, 53, passed away in Spokane, Washington. He has been fighting terminal lung cancer since he was diagnosed on his birthday last year. On Saturday, June 5, 2004 he lost his fight and lay in the arms of the Lord.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm, Thursday, June 10, 2004 at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Sandpoint with Pastor Steve Nickodemus of Christ Our Redeemer Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will follow at the Lakeview Cemetery
with full military honors presented by VFW Post # 2453.
Michael was born on August 5, 1950 to Sgt. Royal and Lurline Richards in Heidelberg, Germany. He grew up in San Francisco where his father was stationed.
Michael enlisted in the United States Army on May 10, 1968 in Oakland, CA. He served as a medical corpsman in Vietnam, where he suffered exposure to the chemical agent orange. After receiving several medals for his service to our country, Michael was honorably discharged on December 24, 1970.
Michael returned to California where he served as a paramedic for 15 years. In 1984 Michael met and fell in love with Christina Chavez. The couple was married on October 24, 1992 in Monteray, CA. Michael had a strong dedication to his family and held them together through the hard times and the good times.
The family moved to Ponderay in 2002 where they planned to retire. Michael enjoyed working at Hidden Lakes Golf Course. He loved the outdoors, golf, walking, and helping others. Michael will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who found joy in life and love and dedication for his family.
He is survived by his wife Christina Richards of Ponderay; mother Lorine Richards of Sacramento, California; brother Robert Richards of San Mateo, California; children Kimberly Carter of Junction City, Kansas; Holly Gammon of Kootenai; Robert Jai Richards of Ponderay; Christina Stewart of Ponderay; Ramey Chavez of Sacramento, California; Debbie Phillips of Junction City, Kansas and Tammy Derby-O'Brien of Sacramento, California; four grandchildren Jaida, Jeffery, Hayley and Lily and his two dogs Precious and Lucy.
He was preceded in death by his father Sgt. Royal Richards.

Elizabeth Matilda (Lagerveld) “Betty” Bauer, 92, passed away, Wednesday, May 26, 2004 in Sagle, Idaho.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am, Tuesday, June 1, 2004 at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Nancy Copeland-Payton officiating. Burial will follow at Pinecrest Memorial Park in Sandpoint.
Betty was born on March 13, 1912 at home in Paterson, New Jersey to Benjamin and Amanda (Lydecker) Lagerveld. She grew up attending Sunday School at the Union Reformed Church in Paterson. The lessons she learned there helped her throughout her life. Her mother taught her to cook, knit, crochet, and embroider, and at age 13 her aunt taught her to tat.
In 1932 she moved to Colesville, NJ where she attended the Methodist Church, taught Sunday School, and played the organ. Betty was married there in 1938. In 1957 she moved to Pequannock, NJ where she served as an Elder at the Pequannock Reform Church. After working 22 years as a cook for the State of New Jersey, Betty retired and moved to Sandpoint in 1972 to be closer to her family.
Betty was an Elder at the First Presbyterian Church, where she enjoyed singing in the choir, attending the Presbyterian Women’s meetings, sewing circle, fellowship dinners, and using her talents to make quilts for the missions. She was a member of the Bonner General Hospital Auxiliary for 22 years, past president and treasurer of the AARP, attended the Sandpoint Senior Center, and as a member of the Westmond Grange won several blue ribbons for her handwork.
She is survived by a loving family, two sons Brian (Eileen) Bauer of Sagle and Warren (Marion) Bauer of Olympia, Washington; eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law Lynda Thurman of Worley, Idaho; brother Maurice Lagerveld of Newfoundland, New Jersey; sister in laws Nellie Langerveld of Hawthorne, New Jersey and Jeannette Langerveld of Hopatcong, New Jersey; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, son Ronald George Bauer, and four brothers Richard, Peter, Cornelius, and Alfred Lagerveld.

Richard G. Breckenridge passed away Sunday, May 23, 2004 of natural causes in Sandpoint, Idaho. No funeral services are scheduled at this time.
Richard was born December 8, 1930 in Boise, Idaho to Winifred and George Breckenridge. He was raised in Boise, Horseshoe Bend, and Weiser. Richard graduated from Weiser High School in 1950 and went on to attend Idaho State College in Pocatello for two years where he majored in printing.
Richard worked at Swifts Beef Packing Plant and the Idaho Statesman in Boise. He also worked at Sears Automotive where he later retired from. He eventually moved to Florence, Arizona where he resided for eight years before moving to Sandpoint to be closer to his family.
Richard loved spending time outdoors with his family and friends camping, fishing and hunting. He had many wonderful friends in Boise, Florence, and Sandpoint.
He is survived by his daughter Wende (Wade) Ellis of Sandpoint; sons Richard L. (Mary) Breckenridge of Boise; Ken & (Debbie) Phippen of Boise; granddaughter Amy (Kurt) Borup of Sandpoint; grandsons Travis & Josh Breckenridge of Boise; Skeet Phippen of Anchorage; one great-grandson, and three great-granddaughters; sister Anamae (Harry) Ledington of Boise, Idaho;and many special friends and caregivers at Life Care Center in Sandpoint; Bonner General Hospital, Kootenai Medical Center, and St. Luke’s Rehab in Spokane. Thank you for the love and care you gave to Richard and his family during some very difficult times.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Betty, one daughter Cinde, and one brother Harry who was killed in action during World War II.
Memorial donations may be made to any Parkinson’s disease or Spinal Cord Injury Research Association.

Nick Zaklan, 86, passed away, Wednesday, April 28, 2004 in Sandpoint, Idaho.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 am, Monday, May 3, 2004 at the Lakeview Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Nancy Copeland-Payton from the First Presbyterian Church officiating.
Nick was born on a stump farm in Oden February 8, 1918 to Dan and Amelia Zaklan. He attended the Oden grade school during The Great Depression, and later attended Sandpoint High School. Nick worked on the farm during those difficult depression years, and found summer employment in FDR’s Civilian Conservation Corps.
Nick served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was trained as an ironworker in the Seattle shipyards, and continued to follow that trade for the rest of his life. During the war he was stationed in the South Pacific. He didn’t see any front line action, because he was welding and repairing the broken down equipment far behind the front lines. He said that was as close as he wanted to get.
After the war, he continued as an ironworker in Alaska and the Northwest. He bought a home in Sandpoint so his mother could live with him, and later bought a home on Lake Pend O’Reille.
When asked why he was always smiling in old family pictures while the rest of the family was grim faced, he replied, “Hell, I don’t know, it’s a lot easier than screwing up your face.”
Nick was a life member of VFW Post # 2453, and a member of Elks Lodge #1376. He enjoyed golfing, restoring old furniture bought at garage sales, growing dahlias and strong garlic, and he loved to go huckleberrying.
Nick is survived by his sisters, Helen Johnson of Sandpoint; Julie Whalgren of Sandpoint; and Sophie Guichard of San Francisco, California; brother Stan Zaklan of Portland, Oregon, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and five brothers Mike, George, John, Bob, and Peter Zaklan.

John W. Best, 77, passed away, Wednesday, April 14, 2004 in Sandpoint, Idaho. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, April 17, 2004 at the Lakeview Funeral Home. Visitation for family and friends will be held one hour prior to the service.
John was born on November 25, 1926 in Clark Fork, Idaho to Clarence and Zema Best. John grew up and attended schools in Clark Fork. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1945, were he served during the end of World War II. Upon his return to Clark Fork he went to work for Northern Pacific Railroad.
John married Kathleen Jenness on May 24, 1951 in Coeur d’Alene. As a young man John always worked hard, infact he was one of the first workers to arrive on the Cabinet Gorge Dam where he worked as a driller. The couple later moved to Ellensburg, Washington and John worked as an iron worker on the dams along the Columbia River. Later John went to work for Schaakee’s Meat Packing Plant.
In 1978, John and Kathleen moved to Sandpoint into their home on North Boyer. They took care of John’s parents until they passed away.
John was a member of the Moose Legion in Ellensburg where he served a term as chaplain, and was a past member of the Eagles Lodge. He loved to tell stories and had a great sense of humor. John may be best known for the cart rides he used to give children and friends with his horse “Ernie”. John enjoyed gardening and raising miniature animals.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years Kathleen Best of Sandpoint; sons John (Jeanine) Best Jr. of Irrigon, Oregon; Terry (Kathleen) Best of Sandpoint; daughter Pamela (Michael) Vance of Sandpoint; two sisters Beverly Stockdale of Mesa, Arizona; Frances Meyers of Libby, Montana; brother Kenneth Best of Paradise, Montana; grandchildren Bonita Best Ellensburg, Washington; Mike (Marcy) Best of Kittias, Washington; Jason Hetrick of Sandpoint; Joanne (Duane) Ames of Sandpoint; Nichole, Marie and Matthew Hetrick of Sandpoint; Charlene (Jeremy) Phillips of Spokane; Stephen (Rebecca) Best of Puyallup, Washington; eight great-grandchildren and six step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers Arthur, Glen, and Orville Best; five sisters Gladys Wilson, Hazel Cameron, Jean Van Stone, Janice Dubell, and Reva Best.

Clela Harris "Kitty" Hellberg, 84, passed away, Tuesday, April 6, 2004, in Sandpoint. Private services have been held.
Kitty was born on Feb. 6, 1920, near DeSoto, Ga., to Thomas and Genevieve Harris. She grew up and attended schools in the Atlanta area. She moved to Yankeetown, Fla., in 1964 where she lived on a private island, and served as post master until retirement in 1991. She then moved to Sandpoint to be closer to her family.
She enjoyed gardening and raising flowers, especially orchids. She also spent time reading and sewing.
She is survived by her daughter, Jan (Dominic) Masut of Homosassa, Fla.; four grandchildren Leigh (Joe) Mire of Sandpoint, Eric (Julina) Skinner of Sandpoint, Laurie Barry of Ft. Worth, Texas, and Cole Skinner of Lexington, Ky.; five great-grandchildren, Matt, Travis and Ashleigh Mire, and Ryan and Beth Skinner; and two sisters, Arla (George) Gibbs of Greensboro, N.C., and Viola (Roy) Miller of Salem, Va.
