Mary Jane Conrad
MURTAUGH - Mary Jane Conrad, 70, of Murtaugh, went to be with her Lord, Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2004, at her home surrounded by her family.
A lifetime resident of the Magic Valley, Mary Jane was born on Jan. 26, 1934, in Kimberly, the daughter of William and Bessie Hills. She attended both Kimberly and Twin Falls schools, graduating from Twin Falls O'Leary High School in 1951. The following winter she married her long time friend Howard Eugene Conrad on February 24, 1952 at the Kimberly Church of the Nazarene. The friendship and love never ended and for the last 52 years they have rarely been separated.
The first few months of marriage took her far from home as she and her new husband began their life together in Fairbanks, Alaska, where Howard was stationed with the Army at Eliason Air Force Base. In the fall of 1953 with Howard's responsibility to the Army complete, the young couple returned to the Magic Valley to build their home and family. Starting with not much, they created a successful farming operation that eventually included 5 family owned corporations. Mary managed the office, kept the books, served as Secretary/Treasurer of the business and believed in Howard's dreams and visions. Her confidence proved to be well placed as their farming endeavor provided not just food for others and a living for themselves and their two daughters, but also enabled her to support causes that were important to them. Church programs and buildings, college scholarships for deserving students and political causes were among the recipients of her generosity.
Mary enjoyed life. She learned to play the piano as a child and never lost her love for music. She used her talent during her early years as a pianist at the Kimberly Church of the Nazarene and then later in various church musicals and groups. For a few years in the late 1970s and early 1980s she was a part of The Sounds of Praise Gospel Quartet, a group that even traveled some around the region. But her favorite place to play was right at home with family and friends around the piano.
The Magic Valley was always home and her last days were spent looking at the fields and hills that were familiar and comforting. Before her strength failed she enjoyed traveling. Sometimes on business and sometimes for pleasure, Howard and Mary traveled to a number of foreign countries as well as around the United States. In the earlier days it might be a quick trip to the Oregon coast in their airplane, but after they retired in 1999 they took to the more leisurely travel of a motor home. Retirement allowed them to take several trips across the country as well as spend a few winters in Arizona. They joined the Twin Falls Good Sam Bluebirds Club and Mary loved the friends she made there.
Mary treasured the simple things in life; her family, friends, and church.
A gracious hostess, she loved to entertain others in her home especially at Christmas. Working with her hands made her happy, from crocheting an Afghan to tending her rose garden; she had a knack for turning something simple into something beautiful and elegant.
Seventy years is not a short life, but for Howard and his daughters it wasn't long enough. There will be an empty place in their lives that will always be hers. She tried so hard to stay but in the end needed to go.
The battle with cancer and its suffering is over and the life with Christ has begun. The separation is not for long and we rejoice in her home going.
Our family would like to express appreciation to those who helped during Mary's long illness. Thank you to Dr. David Spritzer and his staff who always seemed to have time to answer one more question and never treated us like just another case. Thank you to the kind people from Idaho Home Health and Hospice who were willing to drive out to Murtaugh and bring aid and comfort. Thank you to Janise Harms who just became a part of the family over the past year. Thank you to Pastor Kester, our church family, and the people all over the Magic Valley who stopped to ask, "how's Mary" and to pray. You will never know the extent to which your love for us made it possible to face some dark and difficult days.
Mary Jane is survived by her husband, Howard Conrad of Murtaugh, daughters, Loretta (Kelly) Mai of Hazelton, Julie Conrad of Murtaugh; grandson, Curtis (Jackie) Mai of Hazelton; brothers-in-law & sisters-in-law, Joanne Hills, John and Dorie Conrad, Irene Ferguson, Gerry and Joann Conrad, Betty and Ellis McRoberts, Ruth and Loyd Bakewell; many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Lester, Albert, Raymond Hills; sisters, Verla Dodson, Dorothy Schoolcraft; one grandson, Scot Mai.
Funeral services for Mary Jane will be held 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004 at Twin Falls First Church of the Nazarene, 1231 Washington St. N., with Rev. Jerry Kester, officiating. Interment will follow in Hazelton Cemetery.
