Ralph Vernon “Bud” Fink
Ralph Vernon “Bud” Fink, an 88-year-old resident of Burley, died Saturday, May 5, 2007, at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Ralph was born April 3, 1919, in Twin Falls, the son of LeRoy and Edith Price Fink. He later moved to Malad, where he spent most of his childhood and was baptized into the LDS Church. After graduating from Malad High School in 1938, he attended the University of Idaho n Southern Branch in Pocatello (later Idaho State University) where he began his studies in education and was a member of the school’s basketball team. He continued his studies at Albion State Normal School in Albion, Idaho, in 1939, where he again joined the basketball team and obtained his teaching certificate in 1940.
Ralph had his first teaching job in Jerome, from 1940 to 1943. During this time he married Theda Harris of Malad, on Dec. 21, 1940, when they eloped to Pocatello, after receiving his first paycheck and selling his cow to purchase the wedding band.
In 1943, Ralph was drafted into the United States Navy and trained at Camp Farragut in northern Idaho, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and at Texas A&M University. He was then stationed in San Francisco and Honolulu, where he served as a radio man during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1945.
After leaving the service, he returned to Jerome, seeking employment and worked various odd jobs until being recruited by Gates Brothers of Wendell, to work in their retail business and play basketball for their Outlaw League team. He later worked construction for Jerry Williams at Wendell Lumber and during this period also performed various construction jobs throughout the area.
Starting in the early 1950s, he worked as a union carpenter in Las Vegas, Nev., helping build many of the classic hotel-casinos, including the Moulin Rouge.
To help fill the need for teachers, Ralph returned to Idaho, in the mid-fifties to work at Wendell Junior High where he taught and coached. In 1964, the purchase of a retail business by Ralph and his wife, Theda, brought them to Burley, where he also started teaching and coaching at Burley Junior High until his retirement in 1981. Although he taught many subjects, he preferred math above all others. In 1961, he earned his bachelor’s degree from Idaho State University. Throughout his teaching career he also received numerous grants to continue his studies at various educational institutions, including University of Idaho, College of Idaho, and Colorado State University.
By the time he retired he was respected and held in high esteem by his peers as an outstanding teacher and coach. The sport of basketball was one of his passions and in addition to his coaching he continued to play competitively after college participating in regional Outlaw Leagues for many years.
After he retired, he spent many years enjoying his vacation home with his wife and family in Sawtooth City.
His hobbies included fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, throwing horseshoes, playing the organ, and reading. Ralph’s other civic activities included serving as a volunteer firemen in Wendell and as a member of the Elks.
Ralph was survived by wife, Theda Harris Fink of Burley; daughter, Suzanne Doane (husband Leroy) of Spokane, Wash.; son, LeRoy Fink (wife Janie) of Burley; three grandchildren, Greg Thomason (wife Coleen) of Elko, Nev., Stillman Zachary Fink (wife Betsy Carver) of Los Angeles, Calif., and Gabriel Eli Fink of Boise; two great-grandchildren, Vivienne Elenora Fink of Los Angeles, Calif., and Kenna Thomason of Elko, Nev.

Louise Poulton Ashby Jones
Louise Poulton Ashby Jones, an 89-year-old resident of Burley, passed away Saturday evening, April 21, 2007, at Parke View Care & Rehabilitation Center.
She was born Feb. 21, 1918, at Willow Creek (Hazel), Cassia County, the daughter of Thomas Arthur and Martha Ellen Thomas Poulton. She was the second of seven children and the first daughter. She was proud of her Poulton heritage and pioneer history. She always told people, “I’m related to half the county and connected to the rest.“
She attended grades 1-8 in the old Willow Creek school house and graduated from Burley High School. She married John H. “Jack” Ashby and to this union were born four children, John Herbert “Herb” Jr., Donna, Cherry Mae, and Tina Lee. She later married Griffith L. Jones in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple.
Through the years, Louise worked at Woolworth’s, Sprouse Reitz, M.H. Kings, the old Oregon Trail CafĂ©, and retired while working at Nelson’s CafĂ©. Louise loved flowers and plants, bowling, quilting, sewing and crocheting. Each and every child received a handmade article from those loving hands that they treasure.
She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in the Sunday School, Primary and Relief Society. She had many callings and filled them to the fullest. She especially enjoyed her years in the Relief Society. She loved singing in the ward choirs, and with the Relief Society Singing Mothers in both the Burley and Twin Falls stakes. She was always singing to the little children and many of those songs are still being sung by each new generation.
After retirement, Louise cared for several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, which was a highlight of her day. She taught them many skills and watched them apply these skills to their lives. She loved to hear the laughter of small children and always had a listening ear for their good and bad times. She looked forward to attending the activities of her family and the children always looked out amongst the crowd to find that grandma was there.
Louise had a special knack of whipping up delicious meals or desserts out of practically nothing. She was always ready to share what she had with others and worked hard to provide for her family. No child ever left Grandma Jones’ home without a bag of goodies.

Bernice DalSoglio
Rupert — Bernice Lillith Badger DalSoglio, of Rupert, passed away on Friday Dec. 15, 2006, at the age of 95, at the Warren House Assisted Living Center in Burley, where she had resided for the past four years.
Bernice was born Oct. 7, 1911, to LeRoy and Olive Lavina Barnes Badger in Standrod, on the Utah-Idaho border. She attended grade school in Standrod and Clear Creek. After 8th grade graduation, the family moved to Acequia, where she graduated from Rupert High School. She learned to sew and cook at a young age and enjoyed it all of her life. She met the love of her life in high school, Victor DalSoglio, and they married on Nov. 29, 1930, in Burley. They enjoyed each others company and lived a happy life together until his death in May of 1978.
Vic and Bernice worked side-by-side on the farm in the Roston area (Little Italy) for 38 years until they sold “The Place” and moved to town. She also worked at J.R. Simplot in the cafeteria until her retirement. She was a hard worker, homemaker, mother, grandma, seamstress, cook, artist, gardener, and the list goes on. Her gardens were the best in the county. Her flowers were phenomenal and her garden produced the best produce before anyone else’s garden. In her younger years she was active as a 4-H leader and in the Grange. She enjoyed camping, hunting “brushing out the deer,” and the many hours spent at her summer place in Ketchum. Bernice enjoyed company and was thrilled to have friends and family visit. In fact, her favorite hobby was being the best hostess anyone could ask for.
Bernice is survived by her two children, Roy (Frances) DalSoglio of Rupert, and Dora Brockie of Tucson, Arizona; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Jack (Vera) Badger.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a son in-law, Don Brockie; one great-grandson, Shane Boguslawski; her parents; her sister, Leone Badger; and her brothers, Lester Badger, Cecil Badger, Afton Badger, Forrest Badger, and Lloyd Badger.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2006, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, 802 F Street, Rupert, with the Rev. Father Mike St. Marie as celebrant. Burial will be in the Rupert Cemetery.
Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday at Rasmussen Funeral Home, 1350 E. 16th St., Burley, and one hour prior to the funeral Mass on Tuesday at the church.
“She is now in Heaven doing her favorite thing, waiting on everyone“
We have a special thank you to Minidoka Memorial Hospice staff and the staff of the Warren House. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest donations be made to Minidoka Memorial Hospice or a charity of your choice in care of Rasmussen Funeral Home.
