Edna M. Pasieka
Edna Mae Pasieka, 79, of Challis, passed away Sunday, May 2, 2004 at the Discovery Care Centre of Salmon, Idaho.
She was born September 6, 1924 in Buhl, Idaho, the second of three children born to Henry and Ruth Perkins. She attended school in Buhl graduating from Buhl High School.
Edna was united in marriage on May 27, 1975 to Bruno Pasieka in Challis by Father Dominic Daws at the St. Louise Catholic Church.
They lived in Boise where they operated the “Here’s How Cafe.”
They moved to Cobalt in 1952 and ran the Panther Creek Inn and on to Ellis in 1960 where they owned and operated Bruno’s Cafe.
They moved to Watts Bridge area in 1968 now known as Bruno Bridge where they operated the cafe for several years.
Edna would help run the cafe in the evening and worked at the Ellis Post Office during the day.
She was the post master for 22 years before her retirement in 1983.
Edna and Bruno enjoyed fishing the Salmon River. There was always a contest as to who caught the biggest one.
Even after filling her limit, she still wanted just one more!
Edna was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister.
She is survived by her husband Bruno of Challis and son Larry Hays and wife of California.
Memorial mass will be conducted from the St. Louise Catholic Church May 6 at 10:30 a.m. with the Reverend Paul Wander officiating.
Inurnment will follow in the Challis Cemetery. There was a Rosary Vigil Wednesday, May 5 at the St. Louise Catholic Church.
Arrangements are under the direction of Jones and Casey Funeral Home of Salmon.
Ella Berrey
Ella Viola “Ducky” Berrey, 90, died peacefully in her sleep at her home in Bellevue on Thursday, April 29, 2004.
She was born March 10, 1914 on the East Fork of the Salmon River to William Milton and Hattie May Baker.
She married Stanley McCurry Oct. 17, 1931 in Hamilton, Montana. They were divorced in 1933.
She married Elmer Berrey June 18, 1937 in Clayton, Idaho. They lived in Clayton while her husband worked in the Clayton silver mine until 1945, when they moved near Bellevue to ranch and farm. In 1965, they moved into town in Bellevue.
Survivors include her four daughters: Louella Myers of Challis, Emily “Dee” Berrey of Bellevue, Vicky Johnson of Richfield, and Linda Nancolas of Rupert; her brothers Lawrence (Violet) Baker of Anchorage, Alas-ka, and James Baker of Challis; her sister Edna Hanley of Challis; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Elmer in 1991.
Graveside services were held Tuesday, May 4 at the Bellevue Cemetery. Rev. Ron Brown of the Calvary Bible Church was the speaker. Arrangements were under the care of Wood River Chapel of Hailey.
Donald Harrington See
Don See was born Dec. 19, 1923 on his mother’s birthday in San Mateo, California and died April 24, 2004 in Boise, Idaho.
Don started his college years at UC Berkeley and then World War II intervened and he enlisted in the Navy at Midshipman School at Columbus University, he went on to the V-5 naval aviation program. He studied at Love Field, Texas, then St. Mary’s in Oakland, then San Luis Obispo at Cal Poly. Finally, in Beckwith, he learned to fly planes solo-aeronica on skis.
By this time the war in the Pacific was going well and they didn’t need more pilots but the need was for deck officers. He was then commissioned as ensign at Columbia University. War needs changed again so he was sent to Corpus Christi, Texas and learned to fly SNJ-single engine low wing, two-seater planes.
Then he went to Pensacola, Florida flying the same plane for flight duty. Next, he decommissioned destroyer vessels in Long Beach, California coming out of the war a Lieutenant. He then returned to school at Stanford University and received his bachelor’s degree in 1947. Upon graduation, he married Correen Considine and celebrated 56 years of marriage this past September.
Don and Correen moved to San Diego in 1949. Don’s parents, Therese and Douglas See of San Mateo and younger sister, Marian, preceded him in death.
His true calling in life would be seen in the years ahead as husband and father. He and Correen had ten children which they considered their greatest treasure on earth.
Don is survived by wife, Correen, and the children: Darby Anne Lewis of San Diego, Jack Patrick See of Stanley, Sharon Correen Poehling of Whitefish, MT, Linda Cecile Donald of Flagstaff, AZ, Eileen Marie McKenney of Sugar Land, TX, Sally Therese Schollmeier of Ottawa, OH, Daniel Patrick See of Boise, Bridget Donna Anderson of Boise, Denise Rose Hann of Carlsbad, CA and Molly Beth Hardy of Boise; also, 23 grandchildren and one great-grand-daughter, Stella.
Don had his own public accounting firm in San Diego for over 30 years: See, Hodge & Gordon.
During the San Diego years every summer Don took his family to Mammoth Lakes, fishing and hiking the Minarets. His greatest vision was realized at Redfish Lake Lodge, where his family worked together for 28 years. He was familiar with the lakes and trails of the Sawtooth and White Cloud Mountains. He fished the waters from the Salmon River to Silver Creek. There is a place in heaven where the golden trout dance. Don will meet you there; it’s called the Big Eddy!

Shirley E. Robson
Shirley E. Robson, 84, passed away on January 3, 2004 in San Leandro, California where she had been living for the last 61 years.
Shirley was born on April 22, 1919 near Challis in the Pahsimeroi Valley to George and Flora Miller and raised by Carl John and Flora Herman.
She loved people and enjoyed life, and always had a positive outlook on life. Shirley met her husband, Elijah J. Robson of Mackay 64 years ago at Patterson. They had many wonderful years together until Elijah passed away in September of 2000.
She is survived by her son, Lanny Robson and his wife, Juanita; one grandchild; two great-grandchildren; all of La Grande, Oregon; sister Stella Falker of Livingston, Montana and brother Robert Herman of Salmon.
Graveside memorial services for Shirley E. Robson will be conducted at the Gibbonsville Cemetery
of Gibbonsville on Saturday, April 24 at 11:00 a.m. with Karen Hunter officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Jones & Casey Funeral Home of Salmon.
William Scott Hardy
William Scott Hardy, 18, of Mackay, left us on March 24, 2004.
He was born on February 22, 1986, in Arco, Idaho, to Bill and Lori Denison Hardy.
Scott attended preschool in Mackay, kindergarten at Teresa Bunker Elementary School in Idaho Falls, then returned to Mackay where he attended school through his senior year.
Scott participated in high school basketball, football and rodeo. He had a great love for his family and friends and enjoyed spending time with them. He enjoyed hunting, football, riding horses, riding with his Grandpa Ivan, playing poker with his friends, listening to music and most of all, teasing his brother and sisters.
Scott was a member of the High School Rodeo Assn., Ski Club and County 4-H. He was planning to pursue a career in the U.S. Air Force.
Survivors include his father, Bill Hardy and stepmother Karlene Hardy; his mother, Lori Denison Palmer and stepfather Chip Palmer, all of Mackay; his siblings, Christopher and Kristen Hardy, Allie and Gabby McIntosh, all of Mackay, and Melissa Palmer and Cinnomon Webster, both of Pocatello; grandparents, Ivan and Dona Hardy, and Edward Denison, all of Mackay; step-grandmother, Carroll Palmer of Mackay, stepgrandparents Richard and Ann Wood; and step-great-grand-parents, Vail and Bessie Van Leuven of Roberts; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandmother Peggy Denison. He was loved by many and will be missed greatly.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 30 at the Mackay High School Gymnasium with Josh Ratzlaff officiating. Burial was in the Mount McCaleb Cemetery
in Mackay. Arrangements were under the direction of Simpson-Marvel Chapel in Arco.
Freddie L. Chaffin
Freddie L. Chaffin, 74, of Blackfoot and formerly of Mackay, died Tuesday, March 23, 2004 in Phoenix, Arizona.
He was born February 9, 1930 in Blackfoot, Idaho to John Oscar and Veda Irene Mathews Chaffin.
Freddie was raised and attended schools in Rose and Moreland, graduating from Moreland High School in 1948. Following high school he was drafted into the United States Army during World War II and served in England. Upon his discharge he returned to Blackfoot and began working in the potato industry for a brief time before starting work for Ag. Services.
In 1955 he married Alice Fortner. From their marriage they had three children, Linda, Freddie, and Kelly. Alice and Freddie were later divorced. On June 12, 1972 he married Barbara Hocking in Las Vegas, Nevada. They made their home in Blackfoot where Freddie worked for Ag Services Inc. as a general foreman and a pump specialist. After many years of working for Ag Services, Freddie retired.
In 1978 they began spending their summers in Mackay where Freddie worked for the U.S. Forest Service for 11 years. For the past five years they have spent their winters in Quartzsite, Arizona.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Freddie has been a life member of the Elks Lodge #1416 in Blackfoot and a member of the American Legion Joe Nowacki Post #16 in Mackay.
He enjoyed hunting, camping, snowmobiling, four-wheeling, traveling and working in the yard. He also loved spending time with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and his dog. They gave him so much happiness.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, John and a sister, Alice Herbst.
Surviving are his wife, Barbara Chaffin, Blackfoot; two sons, Freddie Chaffin (Debby), Winnemucca, NV and Kelly Chaffin (Kate), Pocatello; a daughter, Linda Warner (Spence), Swan Valley; three step-children, Connie Anderson (Dennis), Billy Hocking (Caryn), both of Blackfoot and Margaret Van Orden, Mackay; a brother, Roscoe Chaffin (Joanne), Groveland; two sisters, Ada Stewart (Claude), Inkom, and Vera Wixom Horrocks, Rose; 13 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held March 29, 2004 at the Hawker Funeral Home, 132 S. Shilling Ave., Blackfoot. Interment was in the Groveland Cemetery. Military rites were performed by the American Legion Stewart Hoover Post #23.
