Clara Miller
Clara Miller, 88, of Challis, passed away April 30, 2002 at her son's home in Challis, Idaho. She had been in declining health for the past few years.
She was born on November 21, 1913 in Edmonton Alberta, Canada which is near Lake Thelma, the second child of Robert and Katherine Retzler Ziglinski.
Her dad liked to travel and they journeyed to the United States when she was a small child. She recalled through many stories her early childhood as quite an adventuresome time as they traveled across the United States several times. They were in Oregon a few years, then New Jersey and back to Oregon, then back to New Jersey in their old Model T Ford. The family finally settled down on a small farm near Newberg, Oregon.
At the age of six, she started school at Mt. Angel's in Oregon. That is where she made her First Communion. She was very devout in her Catholic faith, and very honored to have made her First Communion at Mt. Angel's. She finished grammar school and at the age of 13 she started working, doing housework and cooking for different families to help meet the income of the family needs.
She met her husband of 30 years and they were married at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Newberg, Oregon on December 30, 1935. The young couple journeyed to California and settled down on a ranch in the Sutter Valley at Yuba City, California. To this union four children were born.
Hard, hard labor was very familiar to her. While raising a young family, she continued to work the ranch and also took on different seasonal jobs, thinning peaches in the peach orchards in the spring, working in the tomato fields in the summers and knocking almonds in the fall. In 1964 the ranch was sold and she moved into the town of Yuba City. In the late '60s she began working in the canneries in the area. She worked for Del Montes and then for Harters, where she continued to work until she retired in 1978.
She applied for United States citizenship and one of the happiest days of her life was when it was granted to her on December 16, 1968.
Two of her children moved from California after they were grown and she always made plans to visit each one once a year. She never missed a year of driving to Idaho to visit her son and his young growing family. She would take the bus though when going to Pennsylvania to visit her daughter and as Clara grew older she started flying back to Pennsylvania as the bus trip was too long for her.
During her retirement years, she started a "friendship garden" in her back yard. She cut out some trees, planted others and had masses of flowers to share with the entire neighborhood. Her whole back yard was planted with plants given to her at different times by all of her friends and she, in return, gave to other friends which truly made it a friendship garden.
Her health started to decline in 1996. She came to Challis February 12, 1997 to make her home with her son John and wife Charlotte. Her health improved and she spent her days in the flower beds. She shared flowers with everyone she met. She not only filled the Miller home with love, but also with flowers. Charlotte has counted over 100 large plants at different times growing in their home. In the summers, she kept the yard brilliant with all kinds of flowers and she loved sharing those flowers with all and especially she loved bringing bouquets to St. Louise Church for all to enjoy on Sundays.
She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and one sister.
She made many friends in Challis and remained there until her passing on April 30, 2002. Those left to mourn her loss are one sister, Mary Ziglinski Berger of Wilsonville, OR; four children, Noreen (David) Miller Freeland of Marysville, CA, Joan Miller Moran of Sacramento, CA, John Joseph (Charlotte) Miller of Challis, Margaret Miller Shaw of Doylestown, PA; 12 grandchildren, Dennis (Brenda) Hively of Loma Rica, CA, Bruce Hively of Marysville, CA, Kathy Moran of Sacramento, CA, Michael (Wendy) Moran of Martinez, CA, Colleen (Bob) Moran Peters of Chico, CA, Mary Katherine (Jon) Miller Butler of Deary, Robert Charles (Renee) Miller of Boise, Helen Aileen Miller of Lacey, WA, James Bryant (Debra) Miller of Mesa, AZ, Carri Shaw (Russ) Daubert of Whitehall, PA, Ian (Jennifer) Shaw of Dublin, PA, Zachary (Bobbi) Shaw of PA. She also leaves 10 great-grand-children and two great-great-grandchildren she adored.
This last year she spent many days playing and enjoying her great-grandchildren and they were the joy of her later life. She leaves many nieces and nephews and lots of wonderful friends.

Rex Calvin Andrews
Rex Calvin Andrews, 78, passed away at the Steele Memorial Hospital April 4, 2002.
He was born September 3, 1923 in Teton, the first child of Ernest and Fay Poulson Andrews.
Rex began school at Bernice and then the family moved to Howe, where he continued school until fourth grade. When that school closed he was sent to live with his grandmother Andrews in Newdale. She was a loving grandmother but very strict. Rex soon became very homesick, which made him lose interest in his school work and was eventually sent home where he had to repeat the fourth grade.
While the family lived at Kilgore it was Rex's job to get the milk cows to pasture on an island, which meant fording the river twice a day on his horse.
After these years, the family relocated to the Pahsimeroi Valley where they raised sheep and cattle. During this time Rex, his sister and two brothers rode horse back to school in Hooper, where sometimes the temperatures dropped to 50 degrees below zero. When it was too cold they were driven to school. Rex attended high school in Challis where he met his lifelong sweetheart, Mary Millick. After graduation in 1942 they were married on May 18 in Salmon at the courthouse. They spent their first night of marriage tending Rex's siblings while his parents spent the night in Salmon.
On October 3, 1943 they became the proud parents of a baby boy, Melvin William. Eight and a half years later they were blessed with a baby girl, Sandra Fay on May 27, 1952.
Rex and Mary lived and ranched at Pahsimeroi until the fall of 1943 when they moved to Tendoy and ranched with his parents. In 1949 they moved to the 17-mile ranch where they lived for 20 years. For the next 20 years they leased the McDevitt Creek Ranch at Tendoy. During this time Rex and Mary purchased the Ruley Ziegler Ranch at 17-mile, where they moved, and leased the ranch portion of the property to Melvin and Martha. Rex then went to work for the Forest Service until he retired. In 1993 Rex and Mary sold the ranch and bought a home in Salmon where they have resided since.
Rex is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary, his son Melvin (Martha) Andrews and his daughter Sandra (Tom) Udy, two brothers Gail (Louise) and Boyd (Lorna), and two sisters Goldie (Rinaldo) Jenson and LaRae (Jerry) Dance.
