Stephen Kelly Osborne
Wendell
Stephen Kelly Osborne of Wendell, died Aug. 23, 2004. He was born Nov. 22, 1967, in Chicago, Ill.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn M. Osborne; son, Dustin Kelly Osborne; daughter, Kayla Lynn Osborne; two stepdaughters, LeVena Rose Thomson and Ashley Kay Thomson, Jerome; his mother, Diana Schwanz, Boise; his father, Buddy Osborne, Emmet; one brother, Buddy Osborne II, Hazelton; two sisters, Kimberly Gambarini, Riccione, Italy, and Becky Swenson, Boise.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Becker; and grandmother, Aileen Osborne.
There will be no viewing or services. Cremation arrangements are pending.
Ed 'Papa' Thompson
On Aug. 24, 2004, our loving Papa left this world to embark on his next adventure at the age of 67.
Ed was the first baby born in San Diego County Jan. 1, 1937, to Dorothy and Edward Thompson. As a young boy, he survived the bombing of Pearl Harbor, where his father was stationed. He was also a member of the United States Air Force.
On May 31, 1959, he married
his best friend, Naomi Porter. From this union, three daughters were born. Papa's family meant everything to him and was always included in every adventure.
He and his wife owned and operated Person's IGA Foodliner in Kimberly until 2002. Being the people person he was, charity was second-nature to Ed. He supported the schools and community for many years.
Papa enjoyed many things in life and will best be remembered as a traveler, logger, rafter, miner, handyman, thrift store shopper, car buyer and avid CNN watcher. He was absolutely fascinated by computers and would often keep his granddaughters close to answer the same funny questions over and over again.
The big guy is survived by his wife, Naomi of Kimberly; sister, Barbara Kreft of Twin Falls; daughters and spouses, Debbie and Fred Etters, Connie Thompson and Scott Wagonner and Nickie and Shad Boyd, all of Kimberly; granddaughters, Lonna Williams and fiancé, Nick Beem of Twin Falls, Tiara Williams of Boise, Shalana Williams and Ashley Etters of Kimberly; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Lewis and Oradell Porter of Kimberly; brother-in-law, Roy Porter of Kimberly; sister-in-law, Velma Porter of Shoshone. He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles and other close family members and friends.
His parents, Dorothy and Lloyd Persons; father, Edward Thompson; grandmother and grandfather, Roy and Mae Lattin; brother-in-law, David Porter; and mother-in-law, Arlean Porter preceded him in death.
A celebration of Papa's life will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004, at Parke's Magic Valley Funeral Home, 2551 Kimberly Road, Twin Falls, Idaho.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Ed's honor to the Crossroads United Methodist Church Building Fund in Kimberly.
Dean Barney
Shoshone
Dean Barney, longtime north Shoshone resident, passed away at the Cottonwood Ranch on Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2004, at the age of 93.
Dean was born Sept. 16, 1910, at Spanish Fork, Utah, the son of Francis Marion Jr., and Elsie Labell Hill. In his youth his family moved to the St. Anthony area, and he attended school in Lewisville before his family moved to Gooding.
Dean married
Clarinda Ineas of north Shoshone on June 2, 1934, in Gooding, Idaho.
Early in their marriage they lived near Ketchum while Dean worked on the project to build and landscape Sun Valley. Union Pacific paid $1 a day and they worked Monday through Saturday, so he made $6 a week in wages. He also worked for the Gooding and Smith sheep operation. In 1943 Dean and Clarinda moved to her family's farm in north Shoshone, which they purchased from her mother in 1949. In Shoshone they farmed for many years and raised their family. Also for many years Dean raised cattle in the Wood River Valley. In 1986 Dean purchased the Cottonwood Ranch, just below Magic Reservoir, where he resided until his death. In his later years, he rode for the Arco Grazing Association for 14 summers. The family celebrated Dean's 80th birthday at Cow Camp on Antelope Creek.
Dean was a member of the Wood River Center Grange for 60 years. He was a Boy Scout master for 20 years associated with the Wood River Center Grange and the LDS Church, Troops 58 and 91, and he was a 4-H Club leader. He was a member of the LDS Church. He was a charter member, and enjoyed for many years, the Shoshone Riding Club.
In addition to grange, scouting and the riding club, Dean enjoyed his family, many friends, horses and hunting elk. The last years of his life he enjoyed following Shoshone High School sports.
He is survived by his children, Joana (Lowell) Magleby of Idaho Falls, Lary (Carla) Barney of Shoshone, Bonnie McGough of Boise, Verla (Dick) Flores of Gooding, Tony Barney of Shoshone and Richard (Leslie) Barney of the Cottonwood Ranch; 16 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, Reid; and four sisters, Maizie Williams, Merle Silva, Ina Wennstrom and Elda Jenkins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 50 years Clarinda; two brothers, Elmo and Ivan; and three sisters, Lucile Wilson, Elenor Jones and Lily Jackson.
A memorial will be planned for October.
Juliana Uriarte Legarreta
Spain
Juliana Uriarte Legarreta, age 88, passed away on Aug. 27, 2004, with her family at her side, she took her journey to the hands of her Heavenly Father in the home she was born in on March 17, 1916, in Fruiz, Vizcaya, Spain.
Juliana was the daughter of Angel Uriarte and Justina Paula Otazue. She married
Luis Legarreta on Jan. 26, 1933. Together they had 12 children.
She is survived by Cruz and Susan Legarreta, Julian and Tina Legarreta, Raimund and Judy Legarreta and their families of Gooding, Idaho; Pedro and Mari Jesus Legarreta, Julian and Jose Luis Guarrochena, Elais and Mari Victora Legarreta, Nikolas Legarreta, Luis Mari and Henrika Legarreta, Juan Jesus and Mari Cruz Legarreta, Chandler and Lore'a Legarreta and their families of Fruiz, Vizcaya, Spain; and one sister and her family of Mungia, Vizcaya, Spain. She had 24 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and her husband, Luis, in 1986, two children and two grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at noon on Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004, at St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church in Gooding, Idaho. Demaray Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Max M. Johnson
Albion
Max M. Johnson, a 78-year-old Albion resident, passed away Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004, at Cassia Medical Center.
Max was born Dec. 30, 1925, in Blanco, Colo., the son of Sam D. and Lenora Ellibbe Johnson. He moved to Idaho at the age of 2 and attended schools in Rupert. He joined the United States Army in January of 1942, and retired from the Army in August of 1966. He married
Darlene B. Perry Oct. 13, 1947, in Elko, Nev. After his service in the military, he worked as electrician in heavy construction until his retirement in June of 1992. He was a member of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Elks. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his friends and telling a good story.
Max is survived by his wife, Darlene Johnson of Albion; one daughter, Dana (Lyle) Clark of Lindon, Utah; eight grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Augusta and Alvina; and two brothers, Allen and Wayne.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004, at the Rupert cemetery, with military graveside rites by the Mini-Cassia Veterans.
Services are under the direction of Hansen Mortuary Rupert Chapel.
Lucille Pearl Martin
Lucille Pearl Martin passed away on Aug. 29, 2004, in Chico, Calif., during her sleep.
Lucille lived a full and wonderful life. Born in Everest, Kan., she was predeceased by her two brothers and five sisters of Mr. and Mrs. James P. Freeland.
She was also predeceased by her husband, Ernie Martin, to whom she was married
for 68 years.
She is survived by her two children, Mike Martin and wife, Carole Martin, and Patricia Martin Fuentes and her husband, Joe Fuentes; as well as five grandchildren, Todd Martin, Ross Martin, Tamara Kingaby, Jennifer Bowers and Jessica Combs. Lucille is also survived by six great-grandchildren, Jessica Martin, Travis Martin, Taylor Martin, Evan Martin, Sophie Kingaby and Jacob Combs; as well as her nieces, Vonnie Ranger, Mary Kay Burgess and Maren Osborn; and her nephew, Chuck Schwerman and wife, Julie Schwerman, and their two children, Maren and Taylor.
Lucille managed the Carrier Motel on West Addison Avenue in Twin Falls, Idaho from 1943 until 1972. She and Ernie then moved into their home on Sparks Street and soon after Lucille began working for the Twin Falls school lunch program. She was secretary of the O'Leary Junior High School lunch program for more than 20 years. Lucille was loved and admired by all those who worked with her as well as the students.
Lucille's family has wonderful memories of her playing her piano and singing her "good ole tunes," which they all grew to love. She also baked delicious pies for those she loved. She and her husband, Ernie, were fond of traveling the back roads of Idaho on Ernie's Honda 250 motorcycle. She was an active member of the P.T.A. in the 1950's and played in various bridge clubs. Lucille and Ernie loved spending time with their family and their friends.
Her family feels honored to have had Lucille in their lives and know that Lucille will be a star in their memories and in their hearts for all of time to come.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 3, 2004, at White Mortuary, "Chapel by the Park," with a reception to follow. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Park. A viewing will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 2, at the mortuary.

Jackson Spann
Burley
Jackson Dean Spann, a 72-year-old resident of Burley, died Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004, at Burley Care Center.
He was born Nov. 26, 1931, in Indianapolis, Ind., the son of Thomas Harley and Hilda Marie Scalf Spann. He received his education in Indiana. He married
Dorothy Ann Stephenson on Sept. 2, 1950, in Reno, Nev. He served in the United States Navy aboard the aircraft carrier USS Princeton during the Korean Conflict.
Jack was a hard and dedicated worker. He farmed, owned a trucking company, worked in food processing, and retired from Del Monte in 1994.
He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved the outdoors and was an expert at raising pigeons, roses and irises. He was also an avid walker.
He is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy Ann Spann of Burley; his children, Sandra Ann (Robert) Giles of Rupert, Thomas Charles (Sharon) Spann of Hayden, Idaho, Debora Joan (Jim) Wardlow of Puyallup, Wash., Terry Lynn (Kelli) Spann of Burley and Jackson Robert (Lee) Spann of Boise; four sisters, Mary Lowder of Homestead, Fla., Shirley Disbro of Versailles, Ind., Kay Spann and Joan Maydak of Homestead, Fla.; 15 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Thomas Eugene Spann and Ronald Lee Spann; and one sister, Marjorie Rhoades.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2004, at the Burley United Methodist Church, 450 E. 27th St., with the Rev. Darcey Gritzmacher officiating. Urn placement will take place at a later date in Gem Memorial Gardens. The family suggests that memorials be directed to a charity of choice. Arrangements are under the direction of Rasmussen Funeral Home, 1350 E. 16th St., Burley.
Willis Owen
Castleford
Willis Owen, 88, formerly of Castleford, passed away Sept. 2, 2004, in Twin Falls.
Carl Willis Owen was born Sept. 22, 1915, to Archie D. and Effa Susannah (Carter) Owen in Okemah, Okla. Willis came to Idaho in 1930. He married
Norma King on June 4, 1938. They had seven children and enjoyed 53 years together before Norma passed away in 1992. Willis farmed, milked cows, drove cement truck and carried mail 22 years for the Roseworth Tract.
He served as mayor of Castleford, 4-H leader, and past deacon and trustee of the First Baptist Church of Castleford. He was active with Gideons and the Castleford Men's Club, and listed in the Who's Who Book of Religion. Willis' love of others extended beyond his immediate family. He and Norma managed the Red Barrel Youth Center in Castleford, and were foster parents to 55 children over a 20-year period.
Four daughters survive Willis, Karla (Paul) Timmons of Twin Falls, Deena (Virgil) Reeves and Joy (Glen) Duggan, both of Filer, and Toni Owen of Vancouver, Wash.; one son, Jeff (Keri) Owen of Vancouver, Wash; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Martha Bennett of Twin Falls, Mary Edmonds and Verna (Frank) Partin of Buhl; and many nieces and nephews.
Willis was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Norma; son, Gale; infant daughter, Tamara Lee; and seven siblings.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2004, at the First Baptist Church of Castleford with Pastor Mike Graybeal officiating. Memorials may be given in Willis' honor to the Castleford Quick Response Unit. Arrangements are by Farmer Funeral Chapel in Buhl.
Hazel Rytting
Twin Falls
Hazel Rytting, 84, of Twin Falls, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004, in Twin Falls.
She was born Feb. 16, 1920, in Milner, Idaho, the daughter of Owen and Minnie Dodd Clawson. She was raised on the Salmon Tract and attended Twin Falls schools. She married
Roy Butler in early 1946. They had four children, and were later divorced. She later married
Olin Rytting on Sept. 13, 1968, in Elko, Nev. Hazel was an exceptional mother, loving, good-natured and compassionate. She enjoyed crocheting, doing crossword puzzles, sewing and rodeos.
In addition to her husband Olin, she is survived by four children, Roy G. (Lynn Summerfield) Butler of Boise, David O. (Elaine) Butler of Millbrook, Ala., Steve L. (Cindy) Butler of Roseau, Minn., and Betty M. Butler Hoshaw of Boise; her stepdaughter, Janice Rytting Prescott of Twin Falls; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and four sisters.
The funeral was held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, at White Mortuary, "Chapel by the Park." Interment was at Sunset Memorial Park.
Helen Irene Henderson
Filer
Helen Irene Henderson, 94, beloved mother, grandmother and friend, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004.
She was born on March 19, 1910, in Otego, Kan., the only child of Glen and Veda Doud. At 1 year old, Helen and her family took a long immigrant train trip to Twin Falls County and lived in the Magic Valley continuously from 1911. After attending Union School at Curry, Helen graduated from Filer Rural High School in 1927, and went on to attend the College of Idaho (now Albertson College) in Nampa and the Normal School for Teachers in Albion. She returned to Twin Falls to begin her professional life as a teacher at the Curry Union School and was then asked to join the faculty at Filer Victory Elementary School. Helen was a born teacher who devoted her life to helping young people.
She married
Kenneth T. Henderson on May 20, 1938, and was the proud mother of Suzanne Young of Idaho Falls and Kent Henderson of Kent, Wash. In the 1940s and 50s, the family lived in Rupert and Burley, where Helen served as a county welfare program director, as a juvenile probation/truant officer, devoted foster parent for many youths and the only police matron for Cassia County, before returning to her parents' farm in Filer in 1959, where she lived until her death. She loved living on the farm surrounded by plants and animals and the seasons. Helen adored her many pet dogs and cats, fed the squirrels in her yard every morning, and welcomed her fair share of strays -- two and four legged.
In 1960, Helen was asked to join the Sheriff's Office for Twin Falls County, where she served as a juvenile probation officer until she retired in 1973.
She often played the organ in church and accompanied her husband who was a fine tenor. She was active in her community, including memberships on the boards for the YMCA and Harbor House, a home for children awaiting foster care placement. But her longtime passion was her involvement with the Miss America Pageant. She began as a coach for the Miss Cassia County contest in 1958, worked in the Miss Twin Falls contest for many years and assisted numerous Miss Idaho contestants. She volunteered as a chaperone, judge and pageant official and made four trips to the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City. Helen was the first woman member of the Lions Club of Twin Falls and spent many years as the Lion Tamer. She was thrilled that her fellow Lions continue to support the pageants to this day.
In 1971, Helen was honored as the Idaho Mother of the Year, a distinction she was very proud to have received. Having been nominated by the Lions Club of Twin Falls, she was treated to a New York City trip, where she was named first runner-up in the National Mother of the Year award. She gleefully stayed at the Waldorf-Astoria, which cost $27.56 a night -- an exorbitant sum at the time. She also received the International Melvin Jones Fellow Award for Humanitarian Services in 1995 and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Twin Falls Chamber of Commerce in 1997. She was given an honorary degree from Albertson College of Idaho in 1997 after receiving that school's Distinguished Alumni Award in 1967. She was very proud of her affiliation with Albertson College despite the untimely report of her death in the Alumni Magazine in 2002.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Ken, and her grandson, Greg Weaver, and is survived by her children, Sue and Kent (Beverly), and her three grandchildren, Wendy (Kevin) Folsom of Nine Mile Falls, Wash., Tiffiny (Brian) Coffey of Filer, Idaho, and Travis Henderson of Seattle, Wash., as well as her three great-grandchildren, Becky and Ashley Folsom and Quinn Coffey.
Helen was a woman full of charisma and grace. She often said she felt her life was charmed and that God had a hand in the many blessings, achievements and loving relationships she experienced in her long life.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2004, at the First Baptist Church in Twin Falls with the Rev. Ken Gould and the Rev. Joe Lancaster officiating. Burial will follow the service at Sunset Memorial Park. A viewing will be held from 10 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the service at the church.
