Ann Westfall
Burley
Ann Morgan Westfall, 71, of Burley, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at Parke View Care and Rehabilitation Center.
Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Leslie V. and Helen J. Morgan; a twin sister, Jan Smith; and a nephew, Rick Smith.
Ann was born June 17, 1932, in Twin Falls, Idaho. In 1941, she and her family moved to Burley, where she attended grade schools and graduated from Burley High School in 1950. She enrolled at the University of Idaho, graduating in 1954, with a bachelor of science degree in elementary education. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Burley, an active member of the PEO sisterhood, and a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. She was also a member of the Iris Better Homes Club and of various bridge groups. Ann served many years as a Pink Lady at Cassia Memorial Hospital and in the Volunteer Auxiliary at Cassia Regional Medical Center.
She is survived by her husband, Don; two sons and their wives, Steve and Joyce, and Dave and Dayna. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Erin and Corey, and Michael and Nicholas; a sister and her husband, Kathy and Bill Cooper of Twin Falls.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 8, 2003, at the Burley First Presbyterian Church, 2100 Burton Ave., with the Rev. Dr. John A. Rakestraw officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Rasmussen Funeral Home, 1350 E. 16th St., Burley. The family suggests that memorials be directed to the Burley First Presbyterian Church or to the Idaho Youth Ranch in care of Rasmussen Funeral Home.
Helen Darrington Wood
Declo
Helen Darrington Wood, 78, of Declo, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at her home.
She was born April 26, 1925, in Declo, the daughter of Fred O. and Mary Emily Ottley Darrington. She received her education in Declo, graduating from Declo High School in 1943. She married
Norman S. "Wag" Wood on Oct. 21, 1944, in Elko, Nev. Their marriage was solemnized in the Idaho Falls Temple on Feb. 24, 1950. During World War II, Helen worked for Remington Arms in Salt Lake City, Utah, and for Simplot Dehydrated Potato Company in Burley. She later was employed as the bookkeeper for Young's Dairy in Burley and then worked in Human Resources at the Burley Processing Plant and J.R. Simplot Company.
Helen was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she served in various capacities, including the MIA and Relief Society. She was a devoted visiting teacher! Helen was also a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers.
She enjoyed shopping, gardening, canning, traveling and journal keeping. One of her greatest attributes was her love, concern and compassion for her family, friends and neighbors. Helen was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She is survived by her husband, "Wag" Wood of Declo; her three children, Marjorie (Don) Craner of Oakley, Fred (LaRae) Wood and David (Jeanne) Wood, both of Boise; her siblings, Vivian Anderson of Blackfoot and Charles (Cloadella) Darrington of Anaheim, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Raeola King; and two brothers, Leroy Darrington and Clifford Darrington.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, at the Declo Stake Center of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 213 W. Main St., with Bishop Danny Turner officiating. Burial will be in Declo cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Rasmussen Funeral Home, 1350 E. 16th St., Burley, and from 1 to 1:45 p.m. Saturday at the church.
Logan Joshua Osterhout
Oakley
Logan Joshua Osterhout was born Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, at Minidoka Memorial Hospital. He joined his Heavenly Father on Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003.
His legacy continues on in the memories of his mother, Katie Osterhout; his grandparents, Rowene and Basil Fairchild, and Garth and Lynn Osterhout; and great-grandparents, Kenneth and Melba Osterhout.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, at the Basin cemetery, east of Oakley, with Bishop Gary Lloyd officiating. Family and friends may gather at the cemetery prior to the service. Arrangements are in the care of Rasmussen Funeral Home, 1350 E. 16th St., Burley.
Alice Leah Vitale
Twin Falls
Alice Leah Vitale, 83, of Twin Falls, passed away Dec. 3, 2003, at Bridgeview Retirement Center.
She was born May 13, 1920, in Carey, Idaho, the daughter of Minton and Hazel Griffin Peterson. Throughout Alice's life, she enjoyed cooking and socializing with people. She was the owner and operator of the Past Time Club in Hailey and the Northern Tavern in Jerome. Alice also cooked at the Star Cafe and the Mint Cafe. She also enjoyed music.
She is survived by her sons, Mint of Twin Falls, Craig of Boise, Rocky (whereabouts unknown), and a daughter, Melodie Johanson of California; four brothers, Cleo Peterson and Calvin Peterson, both of Jerome, Kenneth Peterson of Nampa and Leo Peterson of Carey; sisters, Dorothy Witby of Carey, Lerene "Renie" Brown and Marge Mallory of Boise, Idaho, along with eight granddaughters, six great-granddaughters and three great-grandsons. Alice was preceded in death by her beloved husband whom she married
in Hailey, Anthony Vitale; two daughters, Sherri Barrett and Penny Spaulding; son, Salvator Vitale; grandson, Edrico Vitale; granddaughter, Angie West; brothers, Lee and Wayne Peterson; sister, Joanne Peterson; and sister-in-law, Sybille Peterson. She will be missed so much and never forgotten.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003, at Parke's Magic Valley Funeral Home, 2551 Kimberly Road, Twin Falls, with inurnment to follow at 12 noon at the Jerome cemetery. Following the graveside service, there will be a luncheon for family and friends at the Jerome Catholic Church on the corner of Second Avenue and Buchanan Street in Jerome.
Emily Francis Pyle
Buhl/Shoshone
Emily Francis Pyle, 79, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at the Magic Valley Regional Medical Center in Twin Falls.
She was born Sept. 26, 1924, in Huguton, Kan., to Earl and Alta (Florence) Farmer. Emily was a small child when her family moved to Florence, Colo. She later moved to Idaho and on Aug. 8, 1955, Emily married
D.L. Pyle. They farmed and ranched north of Buhl, Idaho. She was comfortable working beside her husband, contributing to the daily requirements of rural living. For a number of years, Emily worked for the Snake River Fish Hatchery. When time allowed, she enjoyed fishing and camping and was an avid reader. Emily loved her family and will be deeply missed.
Emily was preceded in death by her husband in 1981, her parents, two brothers, a daughter, and one great-granddaughter.
She is survived by one daughter, Ann (Ed) Houser of Weiser, Idaho; one son, David Thompson of Shoshone, Idaho; friend, Leroy Burgess of Shoshone, Idaho; and grandchildren, Joyce (Kevin) Parks of Filer, Idaho, Eddy Houser of Weiser, Idaho, Don Houser of Wisconsin, Wendy Houser of Plummer, Idaho, Douglas Houser of Weiser, Idaho, Deborah Thompson, Jennifer Thompson and Michael Thompson, all of Spokane, Wash. She is also survived by many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, as well as three brothers, two sisters and two stepsons.
Visitation for family and friends will be held from 4-6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, at Farmer Funeral Chapel, 130 Ninth Ave. N., Buhl. A graveside service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, at West End cemetery in Buhl.
Bradley Allen DeCarr
Rogerson
Bradley Allen DeCarr, 16, of Rogerson, died Dec. 3, 2003, as the result of a drowning accident.
Brad was born Dec. 26, 1986, in Casa Grande, Ariz., the son of Terry and Amber DeCarr. Brad was a Sophomore at Filer High School at the time of his death. He was involved in the school drama department and also 4-H. He loved playing haki-sack, video games, writing poetry and learning to play the guitar. Brad had been looking forward to becoming a writer one day. He was an exuberant person and you always knew when he was around.
Brad is survived by his father, Terry; his girlfriend, Kelsey; two aunts; one uncle; and nine cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents.
Funeral services for Brad will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 22, 2003, at the Filer High School, with the Rev. David Grindstaff officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. At the family's request, no public viewing will take place. Services are under the direction of White Mortuary, "Chapel by the Park."
Nettie Marie Melissa McCool
Gooding
Nettie Marie Melissa McCool age 89 of Gooding, Idaho died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2003, at the Twin Falls Care Center in Twin Falls, Idaho.
Nettie was born Oct. 15, 1914, on a farm northwest of Hamburg, Iowa, to John Carter Powers and Blanche Mae Lundy Powers. Her youth was spent growing up on farms in southwestern Iowa and west of Nebraska City, Neb. She attended rural schools, graduating from the eighth grade in May 1928. Nettie married
Ancel Franklin Baker on Dec. 10, 1930. To this union, six children were born at Riverton, Iowa. Along with raising her children, she also helped with the farming and delivering groceries locally with a horse and buggy. On Aug. 19, 1943, Nettie married
Everett Ray Fleming at Grangeville, Idaho. To this union, two children were born. Everett had a stroke in 1950 and this put the burden of family income upon her. She sold Fuller Brush Cosmetics and Fashion Frocks. Nettie and family moved to Gooding, Idaho, in October 1952 to be close to her son, Tom, while he attended Idaho State School for the Deaf. Nettie worked at the state school as a house mother for three years. She then worked at the T.B. Hospital as a nurse's aid until the hospital closed in June 1970. Nettie married
Floyd Newton McCool on Nov. 9, 1962. They operated a second-hand store in Gooding until retiring in 1978. She enjoyed her family, cooking, sewing, gardening, traveling and visiting with her friends. Nettie was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Nettie is survived by her children, Ora Arthur Baker of Milwaukee, Ore., Shirley M. Baker Beisel of Herington, Kan., Thomas A. Fleming of Gooding, Idaho, and Ray Fleming of Twin Falls, Idaho; three sisters, Leona Ward of Sidney, Iowa, Eva Nease of Hamburg, Iowa, Lydia Hill of Shenandoah, Iowa; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Nettie was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, John and Harvey Powers, and a sister, Mary Monroe; her husbands; and four sons, Fred C. Baker (1973), Leland W. Baker (1989), Hubert F. Baker (1999), and Joe A. Baker (2000).
Funeral Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 22, 2003, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Gooding, Idaho, with Bishop Mike Anderson officiating. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, at Demaray Funeral Chapel in Gooding. Interment will be in Elmwood cemetery, Gooding, Idaho.
Joseph Edwin Holcomb

Joseph Edwin Holcomb, 85, of Kimberly passed away Saturday Jan. 10, 2004, at Mountain View Care Center in Kimberly.
Joe was born March 4, 1918, in Lonewolf, Oklahoma, to Louis Franklin and Anna Mabel Holcomb. Joe married
Elvie Scott on March 5th, 1939. With Elvie's help, he farmed his whole life, first as a dryland farmer in Hobart, Oklahoma, and then on his farm outside of Hansen. Joe followed his brother John to Idaho in 1959. Joe was known and loved for his dry humor, his love of fanning and his hard work ethic. One of his sons once told Joe that if he quit farming his health might fail. Joe said "so I keep working, I'll retire when the good Lord decides my time is up." He farmed until the fall of 2003.
Joe and Elvie were lifetime members of the Nazarene Church and local members of the Kimberly Nazarene Church.
Joe is survived by his wife of 65 years, Elvie; five children, Gerald (DeEtta) Holcomb of Kimberly, John (Betty) Holcomb of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., Marge (Hugh) Branscum of Bethany, Okla., Paul (Janet) Holcomb of Kimberly and Mary McComas of Cleveland, Tenn.; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and his sister Emma Edge of Bradenton, Fla.
Services will be held at Parke's Magic Valley Funeral Home in Twin Falls at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14.
Friends may call at Parke's Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004.

LaVinna "Vinnie" Isabell Sorenson
Mountain Home
LaVinna "Vinnie" Isabell Sorenson, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004, at the Elmore Medical Center Nursing Home.
Vinnie was born July 16, 1908, the oldest child of Murdoth Hans and Isabell Chadwick Christopherson in Brigham City, Utah. The family moved to Twin Falls in 1912. Vinnie started school in Kimberly and moved to Hazelton at eight years old. She graduated from Eden High School in 1925 and went to Pocatello Tech for one year. She married
Robert Watson in 1927. From this union three children were born, Bill, Jo Ann and Dick.
They later divorced and Vinnie married
Wayne Sorenson in 1936 in Elko, Nev. They moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, where Vinnie went to Link Business College. The family moved to Los Angeles, Calif., in 1941. It was wartime and Wayne and Vinnie both worked at Lockheed Aircraft. Vinnie also went to school to become a state caseworker. They moved back to Idaho in 1950 and have resided in Mountain Home since 1951.
Vinnie worked for the Welfare Department and started the Christmas Food Basket Project in 1955. It started out with three needy families. When Vinnie retired as the head of the project in 1988, they had over 200 families. Vinnie still worked for the project until 1994.
Vinnie's heart was big and her door was always open, and in 1953, she started to keep unwed mothers in her home. Forty-five girls and 17 years later she organized a group of Mountain Home citizens and they started a home for unwed mothers called "Mountain Manor," which Vinnie was in charge of for 15 years. They helped the girls without state funding. The one thing she was most pleased with is the 396 unwed mothers she helped.
Wayne and Vinnie were blessed with their daughter Debbie in 1958. Wayne and Vinnie took into their home over 40 foster children and raised ten other children as their own, without government help. After Wayne died in 1982, she had five exchange students, from all over the world, come and live with her.
Vinnie was in charge of the Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA) of Elmore County since 1982. FEMA provides food and housing for emergencies. Vinnie was an American Red Cross volunteer for 35 years in Mountain Home. In the middle of all this she owned and operated the "Gift Box" gift shop for 14 years, made things for the shop and made quilts and bedspreads for an interior decorator in Chicago. She was well known all over for her quilts and the lap robes. The nursing home, the veterans, her many friends and even strangers were receivers of her cuddly lap robes. She was known for her listening ear and her big heart.
Vinnie was a member of the LDS Church, Women Business and Professional and Beta Sigma Phi. She was awarded the First Lady of the Year Award from the Elmore County Council of Beta Sigma Phi; the Mother of the Year 1975, from the Mothers Club for the Mountain Home High School Drill Team; the Distinguished Citizen in the Idaho Statesman in June 1982; the Volunteer of the Year from the Mountain Home Chamber of Commerce in 1985; the Jefferson Award for the State of Idaho in 1992, which sent her to Washington D.C. to accept the award; the first Mountain Home Newspaper "Face of the Week" in 1997 and March 2002 Historical Society Woman of the Month. Vinnie also worked from the opening day in 1991 with Summers Funeral Homes, McMurtrey Chapel as their personnel receptionist for the families. The people of Elmore County will sorely miss this fine lady.
Vinnie is survived by her son William Watson and his wife Norma of Quincy, Wash.; her daughter, JoAnn Hansom and her husband Quentin of Toquerville, Utah; her son Richard Watson and his wife Jan of Tucson, Ariz.; her daughter Debbie Black and her husband Steve of Mountain Home; four brothers, Deo Christopherson of Blythe, Calif., Orvil Christopherson of Pocatello, Gale Christopherson of Payson, Utah and Dale Christopherson of Payson, Utah; 16 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Wayne and two brothers, Wallace Christopherson and Jimmy Christopherson.
Vinnie was truly an angel. Her life was the epitome of basic values and standards. Hard work, frugality, love, service and devotion were her trademarks. She had selfless devotion to her family and friends. To her friends she was known as a loving, caring and honest lady, to her children her love was unconditional and forever, to her grandchildren she always had a hug, a kiss and a cookie. Her warm smile, gentle spirit, positive attitude and thoughtful manner will be missed and remembered by all.
She gave of herself all of her life and should be proud of her many contributions. She provided a wonderful atmosphere to enrich many lives and touched people in ways she would be proud of. Vinnie was a gracious hostess and a wonderful cook, attracting many extra feet under her table. She touched the lives and gave love to all who knew her, leaving this world a better, although emptier place, for those of us left behind. She was a living sermon of all that represents good and right. Her example speaks her legacy.
Vinnie was one in a million and there won't be another like her.
Visitation will be held from 6 until 8 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 16 at Summers Funeral Homes, McMurtrey Chapel.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 17 at Summers Funeral Homes, McMurtrey Chapel in Mountain Home. Burial will follow at Mountain View cemetery.
Juanita "Wanda" Leona Kirkland
Twin Falls
Juanita "Wanda" Leona Kirkland, 77, longtime resident of Twin Falls, and formerly of Carey, died early Saturday morning at the Sunbridge Care Center in Twin Falls.
She was born March 28, 1926, in Terre Haute, Indiana, the daughter of Leonard and Velma Ferguson Boyer. Wanda grew up in Indiana. She came to Idaho in 1953, and has lived in Idaho since. She married
Juhl Kauffman in 1945, and they were later divorced. She married
Ray Kirkland on Aug. 30, 1958, in Elko, Nev.
Wanda was a very gentle person, loved everyone and always spoke well of others. Her special joy in life was fishing and hunting. She loved to go dancing, playing bingo and bowling. She loved to travel, going to Jackpot, raising flowers and the family cats.
She had a beautiful contralto voice and began singing at the age of fifteen, performing with big bands in Chicago, Minneapolis and Sun Valley. She also was a model in her teens.
Wanda was a member of the Friendly Neighbors Club of Carey.
Surviving family members include her husband, Ray of Twin Falls; five children, Rockie (Rick) Ustick of Jerome, Leonard Kauffman of Hailey, Arlene Kauffman of Sarasota, Fla., Michael (Sherry) Kirkland of Bellevue and Scott (Carol) Kirkland of Wolf Creek, Ore.; twelve grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, one brother and one sister-in-law.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2004, at the Carey LDS Chapel, with interment following in the Carey cemetery. Friends may call at the Carey LDS church from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Tuesday before the service.
Arrangements are under the care of Wood River Chapel of Hailey.
