Afton Voyce
Declo
Afton Sidwell Voyce, 89-year-old Pocatello resident and former Declo resident, died Friday, Nov. 12, 2004, at the Portneuf Valley Hospital in Pocatello.
She was born Aug. 14, 1915, in Nephi, Utah, the daughter of James William and Mabel Birdien Sidwell. She married
Arvil Voyce on Sept. 26, 1933, in Burley. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan Temple on Sept. 3, 1980.
Afton had worked at Ore-Ida Foods for 17 years. She was also involved in the PTA, a member of the Thrifty Thrivers, and Band Mothers secretary. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she served in various capacities. She spent most of her life in Declo, until moving to Pocatello in July of 1997.
Survivors include her husband, Arvil in Pocatello; a son, Gary Frank Voyce of Joliet, Ill.; a daughter, Merna Kay Stucki of Pocatello; a sister, Birdien Fryer; and a brother, Corwin Sidwell, both of Salem, Ore.; ten grandchildren; and sixteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Max Sidwell; a sister, Norma Curtis; and a son, James Arvil Voyce.
Funeral services will be held 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2004, at the Declo Stake Center of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, with Bishop Tim Darrington officiating. Burial will be in the Declo cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 10 to 11:15 a.m. prior to the funeral on Wednesday. Arrangements are under the direction of Payne Mortuary in Burley.
Florence Johnstone
Jerome
Florence Johnstone was born on July 4, 1906 to Martin and Theresa Larsen at Hunter, Utah, now part of Salt Lake City.
She moved to Jerome with her parents and four siblings in 1916. They settled on a farm northeast of Jerome. While attending Jerome schools she drove a horse-drawn school wagon to transport the neighborhood children to school.
She married
Aubrey Johnstone at Shoshone, Idaho, on Sept. 30, 1925. They purchased the old Johnstone homestead northeast of Jerome. She helped with the farming, raising pigs, turkeys, and chickens.
A son, Dale, was born in 1926 and a daughter, Alice, was born in 1933.
Aubrey and Florence sold the farm and moved to town in the spring of 1947. They purchased a farm on the northwest corner of Jerome in 1949, where the resided until Aubrey's death in 1978. Florence stayed on the farm until 1983 when she moved to town due to health conditions. She was forced to move to the Creekside Assisted Living Center in 2003. She resided there until her death.
Florence was an old-time member of the Grandview Community Club and also the Highland Sewing Club.
Mom loved to cook and garden; she excelled at both. She loved her family and friends dearly; she was always there to help those in need and to share whatever she had.
She is survived by Dale (Norma) Johnstone, Alice (Donovan) Yingst, one sister, Gladys (Willard) Bell, one grandson, Lyle Johnstone, two granddaughters, Susan Wyllie and Patti Cline and six great-grandsons.
Florence was preceded in death by her husband, parents, five brothers, two sisters one grandson and one great-granddaughter.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2004, at the Hove-Robertson Funeral Chapel in Jerome.
Friends may call Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Hove-Robertson Funeral Chapel.
Entombment will take place following services in the Mausoleum at the Jerome cemetery.
Family suggests donations be made to a charity of one's choice.
James Ivan Eakin
Bellevue
James Ivan Eakin, 75, passed away Monday, Nov. 15, 2004, in Boise, Idaho.
He was born Nov. 8, 1929, in Jerome, Idaho, and was the third of four children born to Edward C. and Doris L. Eakin. They raised their children near Jerome and Jim ranched with his father, raising registered Herefords, which he maintained as a purebred herd for over 60 years.
Jim attended Jerome public schools and, after graduating from high school, he attended the University of Idaho, then transferred to Utah State University in Logan, Utah, where he earned his degree in animal husbandry.
In 1956, he took a job with the Cooperative Extensive Service in Burley and a year later was transferred to Blaine County, where he continued to serve the community for the next 15 years. He was always available to answer questions on ranching and livestock even after his retirement. He occasionally even filled the shoes of a home demonstration agent!
In 1957 he married
Grace Hobson of Gooding. In 1969, they bought a ranch south of Bellevue where they raised their seven children and established Jim Eakin Herefords. He prided himself on selling quality range bulls to ranches across the United States.
He was a member of the American Hereford Association, past president and member of the Idaho Hereford Breeders Association. Jim served on the board of directors of the Wood River Irrigation District and was involved in water rights issues in the Wood River Valley. He was recognized as a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge in Hailey.
4-H was near and dear to Jim's heart, and during his time as extension agent, he was influential in expanding the 4-H program in Blaine County. This included the establishment of the Central South Idaho 4-H Camp north of Ketchum, used by numerous counties, and the preparation of the Blaine County Fairgrounds in Carey. He was recently honored for his contribution to 4-H in Blaine County, where he influenced hundreds of children in the program.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Grace; his seven children, Dan and Karen Eakin, Spokane, Wash., Mike Eakin, Bellevue, Idaho, Cathy and Kent Venosdel, Boise, Nancy and Stacy Sears, Boise, Pam and Mike Pierce, Bellevue, Idaho, Debbie and Russ Hepworth, Meridian and Patrick and Elise Eakin, Boise; grandchildren, Cassandra, Caitlyn, Connor and Carly Eakin, Spokane, Wash., and several step-grandchildren.
Jim successfully received a new kidney Aug. 1 in Seattle, but developed an infection two months after returning home. He enjoyed two extra months of good health that he would not have had otherwise and he was extremely appreciative of the support of his friends and the community during his illness and his stay in Seattle.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contribution to the Blaine County Senior Center in Hailey, Shriners Hospital in Salt Lake, or the Idaho Youth Ranch.
A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 19, 2004, at the Hailey cemetery in Hailey with Hailey Lodge #16, A.F. & A.M. officiating. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Thursday, at Demaray's Shoshone Chapel.
Don Lee Nelson
Buhl
Don Lee Nelson, 76, of Buhl, joined our heavenly Father peacefully at home, Monday, Nov. 15, 2004.
Don was born Nov. 23, 1927, in Brigham City, Utah, the son of Curtis Clay and Luella May Nelson. He attended school in a one-room schoolhouse in Lynn, Utah, until the eighth grade. He attended ninth grade in Brigham City and 10th grade in Bear River, Utah. He lived in Lynn, Utah with his family on the ranch.
After Don married
, he purchased a portion of his father's ranch. He had three children. Don met the love of his life, Kristine Reynolds, in October of 1981, they married
in Lynn, Utah on July 19, 1986. Don and Kris lived on the ranch where they started building the foundation of his life-long dream "The Pretty Horse Ranch." After relocating to Buhl, Idaho, in 1997, his dream came true with Nelson Horse Ranch.
He is survived by his wife, Kris, of Buhl; two sons, Randy Nelson and Roddy (Viki) Nelson; two daughters, Carol Ramsey and Barbara (Chris) Harrell; one brother, Keith (Ila) Nelson; two sisters, Maureen Nelson and Elsie Phyllis Johnson; ten grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Don's parents; one brother, Wayne Clay Nelson; and one grandson, Brett Zimmerman, preceded him in death.
Don was loved by many and will be greatly missed!
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 19, 2004, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 3rd Ward, Fair St. Buhl. No public viewing is scheduled. Arrangements have been entrusted to Farmer Funeral Chapel.
Daeton McKaide Warrington Martin
Daeton McKaide Warrington Martin, 9-month-old infant son of Matthew Martin and Lisa Warrington, passed away Nov. 15, 2004, at Magic Valley Regional Medical Center in Twin Falls.
Daeton was born Jan. 28, 2004.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include three brothers, Brandon E. Atkinson, Austin K. and Caedyn P. Martin; grandparents, Allen and Gail Warrington, Larry Muegerl and Richard and Debbie Hunt; great-grandparents, Ronald and Eleanor Sneed and Beverly Allison; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 21, 2004, at Demaray Funeral Chapel, 404 West B St. in Shoshone.
LaRae A. Merrill
Burley
LaRae Andersen Merrill, a longtime resident of Burley, died of heart failure at Cassia Regional Medical Center on Monday, Nov. 15, 2004. She was 74.
LaRae, the oldest child of Thorwal and Leah Fewkes Andersen, was born in San Francisco on Feb. 6, 1930, and moved with her parents to Burley in 1938. She was educated in Burley schools, attending Southwest and Miller grade schools and Burley Junior and Senior High.
She marred Calvin L. Merrill on June 6, 1946, in Burley. Calvin passed away two years ago, shortly after the couple's 56th wedding anniversary.
After her children entered school, LaRae spent 10 years doing part-time office work in addition to helping Calvin on their family farm. She later spent two years working full-time at Cal Gas as office manager and then 19 years at JC Penney Co. as an invoice clerk before retiring in 1992. She was also an excellent seamstress, often taking in custom sewing work.
LaRae was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she served as secretary of the Sunday School for many years, as a Cub Scout leader and, most recently, as quilting specialist for the Relief Society. She was also a member of the Cheerful Doers homemaking club. An avid bowler, LaRae served on the board of Idaho's Women's Bowling Association and enjoyed traveling around the state to compete in bowling tournaments. She also enjoyed painting and selling ceramics, quilting and other handwork, gardening and making frequent trips to Jackpot, Nev., with Calvin.
A dedicated grandmother, LaRae often attended the sporting events and activities of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She made a point of remembering birthdays and anniversaries and made beautiful quilts to mark special occasions.
She leaves three daughters, DeeAnn Holden of Kent, Wash., Calleen Nelson (Keith) of Burley and Kaye Moore (Steven) of Soda Springs, Idaho; one son, Duane Merrill (Sally) of Spring Creek, Nev.; a sister, Shirley Badger (Dennis) of Burley; a brother, Jim T. Andersen (Susan) of Salt Lake City, Utah; 16 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and a son-in-law, Robert Ramsey.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004, at the Pella First and Second Ward Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 160 W. 400 S., Burley, with Bishop Thomas Garrard officiating. Virginia Andrade
Burley
Virginia Andrade, a 77-year-old Burley resident, passed away Nov. 15, 2004, at Rosetta Assisted Living.
Virginia was born Oct. 17, 1927, in Lubbock, Texas, to Manuel and Delores Munoz. She married
Manuel Andrade Sr. in Elko, Nev.
She worked for Simplot for many years and later went to work for Merrill's to help take care of their mother and sister. She enjoyed making people laugh and making friends, being with family and cruising around with her son-in-law, Ramon Castaneda Jr.
She is survived by her five children, Paul (Mary) Andrade of Rupert, Manuel (Janie) Andrade of Arizona, Robert Andrade of Pocatello, Loraine Palmares, New Mexico and Christina (Ramon) Castaneda, Rupert; and one brother, Andres Munoz; 19 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Manuel Andrade; her parents, Manuel and Delores Munoz; daughter, Bea Marin; a son-in-law, Nick Palmares; four sisters; and one brother.
A funeral will held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19, 2004, at Hansen Mortuary Rupert Chapel with Pastor Daniel Coto officiating. Friend may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday evening with a vigil service at 7 p.m. Burial will follow at the Rupert cemetery.
Edna Grace Rice
Glenns Ferry
Edna Grace Rice, 80, of Glenns Ferry and Payette, passed away Monday, Nov. 15, 2004, at Life Care Center of Treasure Valley, Boise.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19, 2004, at Grace Episcopal Church, Glenns Ferry, Idaho, with the Rev. P.A. Bergh officiating. Services and arrangements are under the direction of Shaffer-Jensen Memory Chapel, Payette.
Edna was born Jan. 30, 1924, the daughter of Burton E. and Grace L. (Saltzgiver) Hansen in Kemmerer, Wyo. She was raised in Glenns Ferry, Idaho, and graduated in 1942 from Glenns Ferry High School. Edna married
Albert M. Rice on July 15, 1946. She worked various jobs during World War II for the war effort, going on to work civil service for the Air Force retiring in 1987.
She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Eastern Star, Veterans of Foreign Wars, library board and Meals on Wheels in Glenns Ferry. Edna was a very hard worker all of her life. Her joys in life were her love of family and friends and her patriotism. She enjoyed reading and gardening.
Edna is survived by her children, Carolyn (Bill) Schneider of Boise, Russell (Paula) Rice of Great Falls, Mont., and Cris (Ron) Warzyn of Payette; six grandchildren, Rick, Diane, Andrew, Lindsay, Nick and Tess; one great-grandchild, Claudia; brother, Burton E. (Ted) Hansen Jr. and wife, Shirley, of Manila, Utah; sister, Beverly A. Andreason of Eugene, Ore.; sisters-in-law, Ina Pasborg and Thelma Miller; and several nieces and nephews.
preceded in death by her husband, Albert in 1974.
