Donald Eugene Askew
Donald Eugene Askew, 72, our beloved husband, father and grandfather, departed peacefully in his sleep early Saturday morning, Oct. 9, 2004, at his home in Twin Falls, following a long life well lived.
Don began his journey on March 22, 1932, to James and Gladys Askew in Utica, Kan., the oldest of four children. He grew up in Mountain City, Nev., and Jerome, Idaho. In 1954, Don served in the military for three years at Fort Ord, Calif. During this time, he was married
and has three daughters, Donna, Diana and Theresa. In 1957, he divorced and then met the love of his life, Elberta Marsh, and her two sons, Chuck and Roger Marsh. They were happily married
on Feb. 22, 1960. Together, they had three sons and lived in Hemet, Calif., until 1968 when they moved to Jerome, Idaho. Then they bought their farm in Gooding, Idaho, where they lived in contentment for 35 years.
Don loved working as a craftsman. He worked on everything from the American Falls Dam (start to finish) to highway projects from Idaho to Nevada. He was happiest when camping in the Sawtooth Mountains and loved cutting wood, but his greatest love came out for his family. He enjoyed family gatherings and traveling.
Surviving Don is his wife, Elberta Askew; his sons, Stephen (Jackie) Askew of Scio, Ore., James (Patricia) Askew of Gooding, Idaho, and Jeffrey (Tonia) Askew of McCall, Idaho; stepson, Chuck (Debbie) Marsh of Boulder City, Nev.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Verla (Tom) Conant, Judy (Ed) Benard and Carol (Larry) Stubbs.
His parents; and step-son, Roger Marsh preceded him in death.
A funeral for Don will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004, at the First Church of the Nazarene, 1231 Washington St. N. Twin Falls, with Pastor Jerry Kester officiating. Final committal will be held following the services at the Twin Falls cemetery in Twin Falls, Idaho.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004, at the First Church of the Nazarene.
All services and arrangements are under the direction of the Parke's Magic Valley Funeral Home of Twin Falls, Idaho.
Vern Darwin Chidester
Buhl
Vern Darwin Chidester, 70, of Buhl, passed away Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at Magic Valley Regional Medical Center.
He was born Jan. 31, 1934, in Buhl, Idaho, the son of Lloyd and Hazel Chidester. After graduating from Buhl High School in 1952, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1954-1958. He married
Viola Baggett, daughter of Oleen and Dorothy Baggett, on Feb. 5, 1965.
Their marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. They moved to Twin Falls, Idaho, where Vern was employed at both Harrett's Gunstocks and the Orpheum Theatre. In 1981 he moved with his family back to Buhl where he has operated Baggett's River View Orchard until the present. He was also employed by Lamb-Weston of Twin Falls from 1990 to 2002.
Vern was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As a member of the church, he held numerous callings.
He is survived by his wife, Viola Chidester of Buhl; one son, Steve (Kristy) Chidester of Saratoga Springs, Utah; two daughters, Lisa (Brent) Hegerhorst of Spanish Fork, Utah, and Kimberlee (Russell) Brown of Phoenix, Ariz.; and by three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004, at the Buhl 1st Ward L.D.S. Chapel, with Bishop Eugene Montgomery conducting.
Interment will follow in West End cemetery in Buhl, Idaho. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at White Mortuary, "Chapel by the Park," 136 Fourth Ave. E., Twin Falls, and from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. on Thursday at the church.
Freda June Hirst Sutherland
Buhl
Freda June Hirst Sutherland, 87, of Buhl, passed away on Oct. 10, 2004, at her home in Buhl, Idaho, following a lengthy illness.
She was born June 7th, 1917, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Ethel Grace Gardner and Luke (Lewis) Hirst and spent most of her growing up years in Orem, Utah. She was sealed on March 30, 1936, to her husband, Rex L. Sutherland, for all time and eternity in the Salt Lake Temple. After the children left the nest, she began studying art at Eastern Montana College in Billings, Mont. She completed all the art courses in watercolor and in oil painting, then found a new love, pottery. She taught watercolor painting in several of the mobile parks in Mesa, Ariz., from 1975 until her retirement in 1990.
She is quoted as saying, "I have worked in many media, but I love watercolor and clay. I love the brilliance of watercolor and the gentle feel of the clay as it responds to the touch."
Her contributions to the arts of her love will be sadly missed by her family and those who have her paintings and pottery.
She is survived by her husband, Rex L. Sutherland of Buhl, Idaho; a sister. Grace Burton of Payson, Utah; a sister, Gladys (Don) Gerow of Provo, Utah; a son, Lewis (LaRee) Sutherland of Beaver Creek, Ohio, and Alex (Joanne) Sutherland of Filer, Idaho; and by 41 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Karen (Jim) Wright; her brother, Harold Hirst; and a grandson, Chris Vaeiu.
A viewing will be held from 7 until 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct 12, at the Farmer Funeral Chapel, 130 N. Ninth Ave., Buhl, Idaho. A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct 13, at the L.D.S. Buhl 2nd Ward on Fair St., Buhl.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct 14, at the Evergreen cemetery, 1997 S. 400 E. in Springville, Utah.
Mabel J. Tracy
Twin Falls
Mabel J. Tracy, 96, of Twin Falls, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at the Twin Falls Care Center.
She was born Aug. 2, 1908, at Magrath, Alberta, Canada, the daughter of Mayben and Myrtle Jensen Fox.
Mabel was the wonderful mother of Joan Appell; grandmother of Angela and Shawn Eldredge; great-grandmother to River Matthew Eldredge all living in Jerome. A beloved aunt to Walter and Iona Tramner of Twin Falls, Mayben and Merna Johnson of Jerome and Doris Barlow of Utah.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004, at the Jerome cemetery with Wally Tramner conducting. No viewing is planned.
Services are under the direction of the Hove-Robertson Funeral Chapel in Jerome.
Edna Norton Pope
Burley
Edna Mary Norton Brown Pope, a 95-year-old resident of Burley, died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004, at Payson Nursing & Rehabilitation in Payson, Utah.
She was born April 18, 1909, in Duchesne, Utah, the ninth of 11 children of Benjamin Isaac and Martha Esther Cullum Norton. At the age of 9, Edna moved with her family to Woodville, Idaho, where she received her education.
She married
Wm. Delmer Brown in the 1930s in Driggs, Idaho. She raised her family in Pocatello, Idaho, San Lorenzo, Calif., Salt Lake City, Utah, and Burley, Idaho. Del died in 1958. She married
Pete (Verland Everett) Pope on March 27, 1965, and lived in Salt Lake City. Pete died in 1970 and Edna moved to Burley. While in Burley, she worked in retail sales at the Style Shop and as a waitress at the Burley Hotel restaurant.
Edna made many close friends while in Burley and was very close to her sisters and brothers and treasured the family gatherings and reunions. As a family, we remember her ability to make true and lasting friends and of being generous with all of us.
Edna is survived by her children, Rohn (Claire) Brown of Springville, Utah, Neil (Chris) Brown of Huntington Beach, Calif., and Clark (Nancy) Brown of Briar, Wash.; 11 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren. She also is loved by stepchildren, Dal Pope of St. George, Utah, and Nadine Somerville of West Jordan, Utah.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her two husbands; one son, Keith Brown; four brothers, Henry Norton, Don Norton, Willis Norton and DeLos Norton; and six sisters, Ella Hadlock, Velma Hurst, Dora Walton, Leah Teeples, Lois Jensen and Vida Jane Norton.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, at Rasmussen Funeral Home, 1350 E. 16th St., Burley, where friends and family may call one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Pleasant View cemetery.
Evelyn Joan Freese
Rupert
Evelyn Joan Freese, a 87-year-old Rupert resident, passed away Oct. 15, 2004, at the Minidoka Memorial Hospital Extended Care in Rupert.
Evelyn was born on Aug. 31, 1917, in Coventry, England, to Fred and Mary Williams. She lived in England, Canada, California and moved to Rupert in 1975. She married
Louis Freese on Sept. 10, 1966, in Carson City, Nev. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, sewing, knitting and crocheting.
Evelyn is survived by her husband, Louis of Rupert; children, Barbara Sheppard of Canada, Judith Crewe of Canada, LouAnne Trummell of Wyoming, Daniel Freese of Idaho and Dianne Scheimen of California; 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Colin Williams. She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Patricia Sheesley; and brothers, Albert and Alan Williams.
The family would like to thank Valley Vista, Minidoka Memorial Hospital Extended Care, and Dr. Hicks and Dr. Hammond. The family suggests memorials be made to Life Flight in care of Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, at the Hansen Mortuary Rupert Chapel, 710 Sixth St., with Pastor Dennis Stoneman officiating. Burial will follow at the Rupert cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and one hour prior to the service Tuesday at Hansen Mortuary Rupert Chapel.
Richard Lee Kelling
Jerome
Richard Lee Kelling, 78, of Jerome, passed away Oct. 13, 2004, at his home.
Richard was born Nov. 2, 1925, in Cedar, Kan., the son of Lyman and Edna Kelling. He graduated from high school in Cedar, Kan. He joined the Navy in January 1944 and served in Hawaii as a clerk-typist.
Richard was discharged in May of 1946. After his discharge he moved to Denver where he met and married
his first wife, Jean. They had two girls, Judy and Linda. They were later divorced. In December of 1973 he married
Anna Bates and lived in Hailey and Kimberly. She passed away in January of 1992. He worked many different jobs delivering milk, soda pop, bakery goods, water and newspapers and spent 20 years working for the Volt Temporary Services as a typist. Richard later bought and ran horse stables with his friend, Mac McNulty, in Twin Falls. He could always be seen driving his 1977 blue Cadillac around town. Richard met Betty Carpenter in 1994 and she had been his constant companion until his death. They lived in Twin Falls and Jerome. They enjoyed doing ceramics together.
He is survived by his constant companion, Betty Carpenter; daughters, Judy Kelling (Tracy Arnold) of San Diego, Linda (Ronald) Hodson of California; grandchildren, Ian Kelling, Adam Hodson and Sarah Hodson as well as several cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Donald; and his wife, Anna.
A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, at Sunset Memorial Park with Pastor Dale Metzger officiating. A viewing will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. before the services on Monday at White Mortuary, "Chapel by the Park." Danny Allen Burnett
Grandview
Danny Allen Burnett, 54, of Grandview, Idaho, passed away peacefully at home after a two-year battle with cancer on Oct. 18, 2004.
Danny was born June 13, 1950, in Granite City, Ill., to Albert Allen and Mary Margaret (Webb) Burnett. When Danny was 12 years old his father retired from the U.S. Navy and the family moved to a farm in Missouri. His teenage years were spent helping on the farm. After high school, he attended college at Rolla, Mo. Danny joined the United States Air Force in 1970, where he served for 22 years. After having served in the states in the east, west, mid-west and in Korea, Sicily, England and West Germany, Danny was stationed at Mountain Home Air Force Base, when he decided it was time for a career change. He was working for Micron when he was diagnosed with cancer, in 2003 he medically retired.
Danny married
Melode Van Sickle of Buhl, in August of 1974. They are the parents of five children, Emily of Hornsby, Ill., Ben of Burley, Idaho, and Stephen, Erin and Jonathon, all of Grandview, Idaho.
Danny was preceded in death by his parents.
A very BIG heartfelt thanks goes out to all the caring people that have touched and supported Danny and his family during this trying time, especially the nurses, doctors and staff from MSTI oncology and radiation.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grandview, Idaho, with a viewing from 10 to 11 a.m. A graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. at West End cemetery, Buhl, Idaho. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Farmer Funeral Chapel, Buhl, Idaho.
Father James Robb Keller
Father James Robb Keller passed away Oct. 15, 2004, in Denver, Colo., of heart failure.
Robb was born in Idaho Falls, Idaho, Feb. 3, 1942. Robb attended the University of Santa Clara in California and earned a bachelor's degree in 1965 in history with an emphasis in philosophy and political science. During his college summer months, Robb worked for Brown and Gesas as a salesman and The Post Register as a staff reporter (earlier reporting talents were noted as editor of the Spud bi-weekly in high school). Following graduation, he joined the Peace Corps and served in Panama between 1965-68, working in the area of health education, teaching and community development. After his return to the U.S., he went to work for a brief time with Brown and Gesas and later joined Argonne National Laboratory in Idaho Falls where he served as a senior personnel manager between 1969 and 1974. He managed the Jolly Roger Restaurant in Idaho Falls, was the manager/owner of the Keller Follies Theater, belonged to the Idaho Falls Chamber of Commerce and was a member of the Small Business Council. However, his many job experiences did not satisfy his desires to help people, work with communities and serve the Catholic church.
In search of fulfilling these ambitions, Robb enrolled at Mt. Angel seminary between 1977-79. During this time, Robb provided counseling and served as group facilitator for the Spanish speaking community in Mt. Angel. He also served as a counselor/advisor to prison inmates at Oregon State Correctional Institute and the Women's prison in Salem, Ore. He attended Saint Thomas seminary in Denver, Colo., and graduated with a Master's of Divinity Cum Laude in 1982. Robb served as a deacon at St. Agnes' Parish in Weiser, Idaho, assisting the Hispanic community.
Robb was ordained a Catholic priest in the Diocese of Boise on Aug. 10, 1984, by Bishop Sylvestor Treinen. He was first assigned to St. Anthony's Parish in Pocatello as an associate pastor for a three-year period. He was then assigned to St. Nicholas' Church in Rupert in 1987 where he stayed for five years. Bishop Tod Brown then assigned Robb to St. Edward's Catholic Church in Twin Falls in 1992. During his time working at St. Edward's, he also supported the parochial Catholic schools.
He then became part of a pastoral team serving St. Edward's and Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Twin Falls in 1998. Robb went on medical leave for a brief time and returned to the Twin Falls parish in 2002. Bishop Michael Driscoll appointed Robb to the Immaculate Conception Church in Buhl, Idaho, where he was serving until his death. Father Robb has served as a spiritual director in the Cursillo and the director for the Charismatic Movement. He has served on the Deacon Formation Committee and the Priest Retirement Committee in Boise. Father Robb was also providing Catholic services at nearby St. Katherine's in Hagerman.
Father Robb wanted to be remembered as a friendly, charismatic priest and a good shepherd for the people of the community. His zest for life was infectious and his spirit indomitable.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made in Robb's name to the Holy Rosary School located in Idaho Falls or to the CU Foundation/Lung Transplant Division, 4200 E. Ninth Ave., Box A021-392, Denver, CO 80262. Contributions may be given to funeral home staff or mailed to Reynolds Funeral Chapel, P.O. Box 1142, Twin Falls, ID 83303.
Robb was preceded in death by his parents, Rose Anna Keller and George J. Keller; and by one brother, Larry Keller.
He is survived by four brothers, Father Thomas Keller of Council, Idaho, Joe Keller of Idaho Falls, Paul Keller of Monroe, Wash., and Stephen Keller of Elko, Nev., five nieces, three nephews and three grandnephews.
A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, at Immaculate Conception Church in Buhl, Idaho, a vigil will follow at 7:30. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, at Holy Rosary Church in Idaho Falls, a vigil will follow at 7:30. A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 29, at Holy Rosary Church, conducted by Bishop Michael Driscoll. Interment will follow at Rose Hill cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Reynolds Funeral Chapel, Twin Falls.
