LaVerne Ruth Hughes, 91, passed away, Tuesday, May 16, 2006 in Sandpoint, Idaho.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, May 20, 2006 at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Sandpoint with Pastor Darryn Hewson of the United Methodist Church officiating.
Ruth was born on January 30, 1915 in Warren, Ohio to Joseph and Eliza Withers.
She grew up and attended schools in Canton, Oh.
After high school graduation, she completed a bachelor of science degree at Mt. Union College.
Ruth married Dr. Howard Allen Hughes on May 7, 1938 in Cleveland, Oh.
The couple lived in Lancing, Michigan prior to Howard entering the U.S. Navy.
He fell in love with North Idaho during his basic training at Farragut Naval Base.
After World War II, Ruth and Howard moved to Coeur d’Alene, where he established a medical practice.
Ruth devoted herself to raising their family.
Ruth enjoyed traveling, including trips to Ireland, England, and Germany.
She also enjoyed gardening, crafts, and caring for her family.
She was a member of the Coeur d’Alene United Methodist Church, and local sorority group.
She is survived by her two sons, Chris (Kathy) Hughes of Oldtown, ID and Joe (Fran) Hughes of Kirkland, WA; daughter, Elizabeth Hughes of Tukwila, WA; five grandchildren, Chris Hughes of Mukilteo, WA, Alex Hughes of Priest River, ID, Jennifer (Michael) Henley of Priest River, ID, Heather (Alex) Berry of Issaquah, WA and Michael (Megan) Hughes of Issaquah, WA and four great-grandchildren, Parker Henley, Arisa Berry, Lauren and Carson Hughes.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Dr. Howard A. Hughes.

Steve N. VanHorne, 68, passed away on Tuesday, July 11, 2006 in Sandpoint, Idaho.
A memorial will be held at 3:00 PM on Friday August 11th at Lakeview Funeral Chapel with a celebration of Steve to follow at the home on Granite Ridge Road.
Steve was born in Ontario, Oregon on April 28, 1938 to Robert and Betty (Kaylor) VanHorne.
He grew up in the Caldwell, Idaho area and attended the College of Idaho and the University of Idaho where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon.
After graduation Steve worked in the television industry in San Francisco and in Medford, Oregon.
In 1965 he moved to Boise where he was in the advertising and public relations business as well as active in various community events: Idaho Press Club, the Idaho Foundation for Medicine and Biology and was a chairman of Boise Music Week.
Steve and his family moved to Sandpoint in 1971 due to involvement with the development of Condo del Sol.
In 1973 Steve and Don McCanlies opened Resort Realty.
Steve remained active in the real estate business throughout his life which included serving as president of the Association of Realtors, president of the multiple listing service and many years on the board of each organization as well on the Idaho State Board of Realtors.
He was a strong advocate for continuing education and a positive teacher and mentor for new realtors.
Steve was devoted to the EXTRAORDINARY community of Sandpoint and all of Bonner County.
He was very active in the Legion of Fine Arts (the precursor to the Pend Oreille Arts Council) in 1980 he was appointed to the Idaho Commission on the Arts.
He was on the Airport Commission and was instrumental in the success of the beginning of the Festival at Sandpoint.
Steve loved people and laughter.
He was devoted to his family first, real estate second and this was followed by his love of boating, automobiles (especially Cadillacs), reading, fireworks and time on the ‘deck’ with friends and family.
He is survived by his wife of over 40 years, Sydne, his two remarkable daughters: Rachel (Duane) Nordgaarden of Sandpoint, Stefanie Van Horne in New Zealand and his grandchildren: Bryce, Jordan and Jarae.
Steve also leaves behind his brother the Rev. Peter and his wife Rev. Beverly Van Horne of Farmington, Missouri and nephews Sam and Michael.
Steve is also survived by a loving group of care givers from Life Care Center in Sandpoint who helped him during the challenging times of the past several years.
In lieu of flowers donations may made to the Selkirk Association of Realtors in Steve’s name for the continuing education and professionalism of realtors.

John David “Bud” Schaffer, 74, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Thursday, December 7, 2006 in Sandpoint, Idaho.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Tuesday, December 12, 2006 at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Sandpoint with Pastor Jim Osman of the Kootenai Community Church officiating.
A private family burial will take place in Rosalia, Washington.
Bud was born on February 19, 1932 in Jamaica, New York to Charles Augustus and Cathrine Schaffer.
At the age of four Bud’s mother passed away, leaving him with a rich legacy of his early life in her poetry.
Bud graduated from Forest Hills High School in Long Island, NY.
He joined the United States Air Force and was accepted into the Air Force Pilot Cadet Training program in 1952.
He was commissioned as a second lieutenant and received his pilot’s wings in 1954.
Bud married Peggy Paysse on July 16, 1954 in Ephrata, WA, and began their Air Force adventure together.
Bud served his country as a fighter pilot flying F-86s and greatly enjoyed flying some of the first F-100s off the assembly line.
He left active duty in 1956 to attend college at Washington State University.
After graduating with a Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering he went to work for General Electric at the Hanford Nuclear Site at Richland, WA.
He worked for several contractors throughout his career and retired from Westinghouse Hanford Corp. in 1996.
Bud and Peggy then moved to their cabin on Lake Pend O’Reille, ID.
During his retirement years, Bud loved living at the lake house, walking in the woods, fishing, spending time with close friends and most of all, spending time with the love of his life, Peggy.
Bud accepted Christ as his savior while attending college.
He lived his life and raised his sons with a strong Christian faith.
In Richland he was active in the First Baptist Church where he spent many hours teaching Adult Sunday School and serving on the Deacon’s Board.
He was a member of the Christian Businessmen’s Association.
He was proud to serve on the Board of Trustees for the Northwest Baptist Seminary in Tacoma, WA, for many years and was especially honored to be elected to Emeritus status in 2005.
He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Peggy Schaffer of Sagle, ID, two sons Brad and his wife Mary Schaffer, Richland, WA, Jeff and his wife Marcie Schaffer, Tulsa, OK and three grandchildren, Katie, Jonathan, and Lindsey Schaffer.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Charles A. Schaffer.
Bud was larger than life to his family and left us with one of his favorite quotes: "Thou are coming to a King, large petitions with thee bring: for His grace and power are such, none can ever ask too much." -John Newton.
Bud planted many seeds of faith in the minds of his friends and family and had a deep, unspoken burden for the souls of those he left behind.
Another of his favorite quotes was, “I'm paid up, prayed up, packed and ready to go!”

Kimber Lickert, 48, passed away on August 8, 2006, at her home in Clark Fork, Idaho.
She'd fought a courageous four-year battle with ovarian cancer.
A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, August 19.
Kimber was born on December 2, 1957, in San Pablo, California to Janis and Jack Hively.
She attended Ygnacio Valley High School in Walnut Creek, California.
Kimber moved to Clark Fork, Idaho in 1989 where she worked a while waitressing.
She then bought her property and began working for Panhandle Health in 1996, where she became a CNA and found her true calling.
She commuted from Clark Fork to Priest River and all points in between, helping her patients with loving care and doing many extra duties for them.
She was a gourmet cook and made her own special truffles for friends and family each Christmas.
She enjoyed gardening and loved children and animals, raising and training her own part-wolf dogs at home.
She collected and had a vast knowledge of guns, and knew how to use them.
She married Glen Lickert in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho in November 2002, after her diagnosis and credited him with extending her life.
She went back to California to care for her mother at home, who also suffered from cancer, then she returned home in 2006.
She is survived by her husband, Glen; her brother, Kirk Hively (Leslie) of Clayton, California; her sister, Robyn Hively of Washington; nephews, Nicolas Fordham and Sean and Kyle Hively of California; a niece, Danica Hively, of Tennessee; a great niece, Kiara and a great nephew, Damian, both of Tennessee.
She was preceded in death by her father and her mother.
Her strong and effervescent presence will be missed by those she knew, but we are content that relief is finally hers.
