Erle H. Daniels, 92, formerly of Cavendish, Orofino
Lewiston resident Erle H. Daniels, age 92, died Sunday, March 11, 2012, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center due to causes related to age.
Erle was born to Fred Hobart Daniels and Anna Brown Daniels Bloom Dec. 23, 1919 and grew up in Cavendish. He attended country schools in the Cavendish-Teakean area.
Erle was part of a second generation, on both sides of his family, born in the same homesteaded region of Idaho.
His mother described Erle as a child who took apart and put together all kinds of things just to see how they worked. So it was natural that he became a machinist in the service, a logger and a builder, collected tools and always enjoyed fixing things.
Following four years of honorable military service in Africa and Europe with the Army Third Division during World War II, he returned to Orofino and married
Lauretta Jean Profitt Daniels in 1947. They raised three daughters together.
While living in Orofino and Lewiston in the 50's and 60's he owned and operated Erle H. Daniels Logging and logged forests in Idaho, Montana and Oregon. Erle continued his self-employment in the 70's and 80's by building and remodeling homes. He also owned and enjoyed horses during this period.
During more recent backwoods travels, he would point out roads and campgrounds that he originally cleared, especially those in the North Fork area surrounding Cold Springs.
Erle and Vivian Fey Bartlett were married
in 1975 and lived in Kendrick until 1992 when they returned to Lewiston.
Erle is survived by his wife, Vivian; his three daughters and their husbands, Sherri and Dick McMillen, Susan and David Dokken, Lisa and Jeff Brice; stepdaughter Diane Hill and husband Stan Hill; and stepson, Terry Bartlett and wife Lisa Bartlett. He is also survived by his sister, Vivan Stewart and brother, Dale Bloom and wife, Jan Bloom; and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and recently his sisters, Wanda Wood and Elaine Mathison.
Erle touched many lives and had a great number of friends and relatives, all of whom he appreciated and remembered very well. Some of the younger ones thought of him as their dad, too. He enjoyed friend and family gatherings, dancing, camping, hunting, fishing, playing cards, gambling, fixing things, storytelling, and reading.
A Celebration of Life service and reception will be held Saturday, March 17, at 11 a.m. in Somerville Hall at the Episcopal Church on 8th Street and 8th Avenue in Lewiston. Cremation has occurred. Herman James Travis, Jr., 76, born in Southwick
Herman James Travis Jr. was born in Southwick, Oct. 20, 1935, to Herman James Travis Sr. and Lois May Travis (Christensen). He passed away March 11, 2012, at his home in Kendrick, succumbing to lung disease that he had battled for more than a year.
Jim is survived by his sisters, Donna Norman of Clarkston, WA, Shirley Crane of Grangeville; his brother, Don Travis of Craigmont; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his close friends, David and Debbie Middlekoop of Kendrick and their daughters. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Wanda Russell; and his nephews, David and Donald Bryant.
At a young age, the family moved to Grangeville, where Jim graduated from Grangeville High School in 1954. After graduation he attended business college in Spokane, WA for two years, where he took accounting and business classes. He was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1958 and served his country for two years, being honorably discharged in March 1960. Jim moved to Kendrick and eventually purchased property in Brady Gulch in 1963. He owned and operated the Table Supply Store for many years in downtown Kendrick. He also managed the motor freight office and did many other carpentry and construction jobs during his lifetime.
His property in Brady Gulch was the site of many gatherings for family and friends. For years Jim hosted local motorcycle races, where he cooked and entertained for competitors and spectators. At the grocery store, Jim was known to extend credit to many people, urging them to buy what they needed and pay him when the crops came in or they got paid.
Jim's family and friends were very special to him. He always remembered his nieces and nephews with a crisp $5 bill at Christmas gatherings. He was generous with his time and talents, always ready to help a friend or neighbor in need and stick around after the job was done for a cool refreshment and visit.
A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday at the Kendrick cemetery on Sperry Grade.
James Carl 'Jim' Finke, 76, Orofino
Jim Finke passed away March 7, 2012 at his home surrounded by his loving family at the age of 76 after a five-year battle with lung cancer. He fought it with great courage and strength, never complaining.
He was born in Kendrick to Carl Finke and Neva Ware Finke on Feb. 28, 1936. Jim moved from Southwick to Orofino in 1952. He graduated from Orofino High School in 1954 and married
Shirley Bullock on June 19, 1954. Together they had three sons, Corby, Terry, and Randy. Jim and Shirley were married
for 57 years.
He started working in the woods when he was 16 through the summer months for his father's company, Carl Finke Logging. He then worked full time once he graduated from high school. In 1974, he bought into his dad's logging company and with his brother Butch; they formed Finke Logging Co, Inc. The company worked for Potlatch Corp throughout all of these years. The company is now owned by Jim, Butch, Corby, Terry and Randy.
Jim was a board member of Associated Logging Contractors (A.L.C.) and Associated Logging Exchange (A.L.E.) and was a member of Orofino Golf and Country Club. He was also a member of Clarkston Golf and Country Club for about 10 years. Being an avid supporter of youth baseball throughout his years, Jim was especially proud of the fact that he and others started back up the American Legion program in the early 70's. Jim was honored in 2007 when he and Shirley were chosen as Grand Marshals for the Orofino Lumberjack Days.
Jim enjoyed working on his property, the old Finke homestead in Southwick. His interests included watching sports, gambling at the casino, golfing and gardening with his great-grandson Peyton. Anyone who knew Jim knew he got great pleasure in razzing his grandkids, though he loved them dearly. Nothing was more important to him than his family; he always knew what everyone was up to (thanks to his new found love of Facebook).
He was raised and lived by the old school ways, always true to his word and everyone had great respect for him. Being the hard worker that he was, Jim got a little discouraged in his last few years when he was unable to get out and see the logging jobs and enjoy the woods he loved so much.
Jim is survived by his loving family: wife, Shirley; brother Butch Finke; sister, Pat LaFon; children Corby and wife, Kelly, Terry and wife, Jan, and Randy; grandchildren, Justin Brazeau, Melissa Finke, Wendy Leavitt, Christy Finke, Heather Finke, Megan Finke, Scott and Codi Bowles, and Cory Bowles, and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents Carl and Neva Finke, and sister Sharry Wilson.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, March 17, at the Best Western Lodge at Rivers Edge at 5 p.m.

Rusty Eck, 67, Orofino
Rusty Eck, 67, of Orofino, retired firefighter, passed away Tuesday March 6, after a grueling battle with cancer.
He was born to Carmen and Leona Eck on April 25, 1944 in Moscow and spent his early years in Elk River. During his childhood, he was known far and wide for his shenanigans and hi jinx. He graduated fourth in his class from Elk River High School and attended the University of Idaho.
After high school, he was drafted into the Army, where he served in Thailand for one tour. After being honorably discharged, he started a 46 year career in wildfire. He worked for the Clearwater-Potlatch Timber Protective Association as a fire warden and later as the fire and program planner, where he was a constant fixture on people's scanners throughout the region.
Rusty met Marlene Moran at a dance, and a lifelong love affair ensued. The couple married
July 25, 1969 and made their home in Elk River where they made many lifelong friends. They had two rollicking boys, Chad and Cameron, and enjoyed living at the Fire Patrol. He was promoted in 1984 and the family moved to Orofino where Marlene still resides.
He enjoyed participating in national fire assignments, ranging from New Mexico to Arizona, and was a fixture in most local parades with his beloved 1914 White fire engine. His "fill in" gig with the local band, The Paradons, turned into a 17-year run playing bass and singing throughout the region to their many fans. After his retirement in 2006, his new passion in life was preserving local logging history with his "crew". They enjoyed many days talking with old loggers and documenting pictures from the past.
Rusty is survived by his wife, Marlene; sons, Cameron of Orofino, Chad (Kayte) and grandchildren Paige and Rory of Bend, OR; mother, Leona, and brother, Greg Eck, both of Coeur d' Alene. He was preceded in death by his father, Carmen, and brother, Neil Eck.
The family suggests memorials to the American Heart Association in lieu of flowers. The memorial will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in Orofino at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel. A potluck is to follow at the VFW Hall, 330 Michigan Ave.

Allene Marie 'Pat' Shrader, 86, Orofino
Allene Marie Shrader, 86, of Orofino, passed away Monday, March 5, 2012, at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Lewiston.
'Pat' as she was affectionately known, was born July 12, 1925 in Rock Springs, WY to John Wayne Patterson and Hazel Smith.
She was a long time member of the Methodist Church, past president of Eastern Star, a member of the United Methodist Women's Group, and a member of the Peck Community Club. One of the things she enjoyed most was working at the Senior Center where she had many special friends. She loved her family and she was especially proud of her grandchildren.
Pat is survived by her sister, Anna Mae Patterson of Colorado Springs, CO; sister-in-law, Lucie Shrader of Delta, CO; son, Mike and his wife, Clarice of Williamsburg, VA; daughter, Elizabeth and her husband, Brock Steiner of Orofino; son, Alan and his wife, Susan of Boise. She has 10 grandchildren who have blessed her with several great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, March 10, 2012 at 10:00 A.M. at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel in Orofino. Inurnment will be held at a later date.
We will miss her greatly and her memory will live on through all of us.

Nancy Noble, 90, formerly of Orofino
Nancy Noble succumbed to the complications of old age Feb. 16, 2012, at St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise. She had been a resident of Spring Creek Manor in Eagle since July of 2010.
Nancy was the youngest of five children born to Harry and Jessie Cromie Nov. 27, 1921, in Gore, New Zealand. She attended grammar school in Balfour and completed her high school education in the boarding school at Gore. Christened Anna Christina, she was nicknamed Nancy at an early age by her father, a moniker that stayed with her for the remainder of her life.
After graduation she moved to Wellington for employment. While living and working in Wellington she met the love of her life, Emery Noble, a United States Marine serving in the Pacific during World War II. Emery and Nancy were married
Aug. 20, 1943, in St. Andrews Church in Wellington.
At the conclusion of WWII, Emery returned to Orofino and sent for his bride. Nancy boarded a ship in Wellington with other war brides immigrating to the United States. The ship landed two weeks later in New Orleans. From there she went by train to Chicago and then to Spokane, WA where Emery met her and brought her to her new home in Orofino. In 1952 she became a naturalized citizen at a ceremony at the Clearwater County Courthouse. She remained in Orofino until 2005.
In 1955, after her children were born, she began working at the Clearwater Tribune and was employed there until she retired. She will be remembered for the spirited pace of her walk to and from work each day.
Nancy was active in the Orofino community. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, P.E.O., Orofino Community Concerts, and the Orofino United Methodist Church. She was a judge and exhibitor at the Clearwater County Fair, and a dedicated spectator at her children's school events.
As a lifelong supporter of education, Nancy volunteered as a tutor, assisting many adults in Orofino to become proficient readers. She was a faithful patron and volunteer at the Orofino Community Library. Nancy was a stickler for proper grammar and the correct use of the English language, a holdover from her education in New Zealand.
She is survived by her four children; Mary (Cam) Houlgate of Eagle, Charlie (Ellen) Noble, of Ketchum, Dick Noble of Seattle, WA and Bruce (Peggy) of Post Falls; and two grandchildren, Shawn Noble and Kimberly Noble of Seattle. In New Zealand she leaves behind a nephew, Ross Fraser, a niece, Elizabeth Oliver and several grand-nieces and nephews. She has two nieces in Australia, Margaret McNaught and Jean Goule, and their adult children.
Nancy was preceded in death by her husband, Emery; a granddaughter, LeAnn; her parents; her sister, Molly Fraser; and three brothers, Jim, Jack and Alec Cromie.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. March 24 at the Orofino United Methodist Church. Bring your favorite memory/story to share.
Russell James Treib, 53, Weippe
Russell James Treib was born on June 25, 1958 in Elgin, ND to Peter John Treib and Agnes Irene (Becker) Treib. He passed away on Feb. 21, 2012 due to complications related to dialysis.
He married
Tamara (Hueth) Treib on Dec. 22, 1977 in Weippe. They celebrated their 34th anniversary on Dec. 22, 2011. The couple had two children, Bryan Treib and Renee (Treib) Denison.
Russell attended school in Lemmon, SD and Lewiston. He worked for Ponderosa Construction in Weippe and then moved to Calder with the company and continued to work at the mill until he had an accident in which he lost his right arm in 1981. He loved working for the owners of Ponderosa Construction, Eldon and Lela Hutchins, they were very special to him.
After the accident, Russell became Mister Mom to his two children. He was the best at it and took his job very seriously. He kept all of us fed and taken care of. Russ loved to cook and could make the best pickles, pickled vegetables and lasagne ever. You never left his house hungry. He always kept the lawn taken care of and helped his in-laws as much as possible. He rode motorcycles and four-wheelers and loved to get up early and ride. He did a lot of visiting people and loved to joke and laugh with everyone. He always had candy for all the kids. He was a loving husband, father, Poppie, father-in-law, son-in-law, brother, brother-in-law, uncle and friend. He always thought of others and what he could do for them.
Russell is survived by his wife, Tamara Treib; his son and daughter-in-law, Bryan and Nicki Treib of Orofino; his daughter and son-in-law, Renee and Travis Denison of Lewiston; his brother and sister-in-law, Reggie and Pam Treib of Mandan, ND; his sister-in-law, Judy Treib of Lewiston; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Gordon and Mary Alice Hueth; his uncle and aunt, Sam and Darlene Treib of Orofino; his aunt, Violet Treib of Lewiston; and numerous other brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and friends.
Russell was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Agnes (Becker) Treib; two brothers, Ronald and Rodney Treib.
A memorial service honoring Russell's life will be held Friday, March 23, 2012, at 11 a.m. at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Weippe, followed by a potluck dinner at the IOOF Hall.

Mary Porter James, 91, formerly of Orofino
Mary Catherine Porter James was born Feb. 22, 1921, in Payette to Ida and William S. Strode. She went home to be with the Lord Feb. 25, 2012, in Lewiston, surrounded by her adoring family.
Mary attended school in Payette and graduated from Boise State College. She taught at a country school in Indian Valley. During this time, she met and was courted by Hershel Porter, who traveled nearly 100 miles each way to see her. Mary left teaching after one year and married
Hershel on Dec. 27, 1941, in Nampa. They operated the Richfield Transmission and Service Station on Bridge Street in Clarkston, WA until Hershel's death in 1966. Mary continued to operate the station with her son, Bill, while she attended Lewis-Clark State College. After graduating, the station was sold and Mary taught school at Tammany, Centennial and McGhee elementary schools until she retired in 1990. She was an active member of Alpha Delta Kappa during the time she taught school and for many years after retiring.
She married
Bill Cermak of Orofino in 1972 and Leslie James of Clarkston in 1992. They both preceded her in death.
Mary loved the outdoors. She rafted the rivers, hiked and camped. For many years, she participated in Take Pride in America (TPIA), a volunteer organization committed to restoring the Lewis-Clark Trail. She often involved her children and grandchildren in her trips to the mountains and rivers and helped instill a love of the outdoors in all of them. Her vast knowledge of plants, trees and the environment led to Mary's early dreams of becoming a forest ranger. Unfortunately the times prevented women from such careers, so Mary lovingly shared her knowledge with her children and grandchildren.
Besides anything outdoors, Mary loved to read. Her home was filled with books of all genres. Even after her illness took away her ability to read, she would rearrange her bookshelves and take a book with her when she went for a ride in the car.
Mary was a deeply religious woman who was a longtime member of Emmanuel Baptist and First Baptist churches. She later joined the First Presbyterian Church in Clarkston. She took pleasure in sharing stories and lessons from the Bible with her grandchildren and often sat them down around the table so she could talk to them about the Bible.
In addition to her husbands, Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Ina and Louise; and her infant children, Robert and Susan. She is survived by her sons, William and his wife Connie, Daniel and his wife Diane, and Stephen, all of Clarkston; and her daughters, Carol Imel-Burris of Spokane, WA and Patricia Johnson of Clarkston. Mary leaves behind 13 grandchildren, Tracy, Jenny, Kim, Heidi, Todd, David, Amy, Angela, Danielle, Karly, Lisa, Robert and Michelle; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
The family would like to thank the staff at Orchards Rehabilitation and Care Center for taking care of our mom and for their kindness and consideration at a difficult time.
Mary's funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday at Merchant Funeral Home in Clarkston. She will be laid to rest at Vineland cemetery beside her precious Hershel.
Donations in Mary's name can be sent to the Alzheimer's or Cancer Association.
