Penny Lee Coon, 65, Orofino
Penny Lee Coon, 65, died peacefully with her family at her side at Aspen Park in Moscow on May 26, 2012 after a long, difficult battle with Huntington's disease.
Penny was born to Leon and Norma Marshall on April 24, 1947 in Moscow. She joined her older sister Madeline and brothers Floyd and Richard at the family home in Ahsahka and attended school in Orofino.
Penny married
Kenny Olmstead in February 1968 in Ahsahka. Together they raised their children Tammy, Kirk, Dulsey and Robin. They lived in Orofino where Penny worked at Hayes Food and Riverside Lanes. Penny made many friends during those years that she remained close to.
Penny and Kenny Coon were married
on December 13, 1984 in Pierce. They lived for many years in Pierce and later moved to Orofino. Penny was a homemaker during most of this time. She enjoyed many hobbies including quilting, toll painting and flower gardening. Many in her family enjoyed the beautiful handmade gifts that Penny gave them through the years. She spent innumerable hours quilting and painting with ladies around Orofino and again built many lasting friendships.
Penny's family meant everything to her. She enjoyed having family dinners and holidays together. All of her children and grandchildren were blessed to have countless special times in her home enjoying her wonderful cooking, playing with Grandma in the craft room or digging outside in the dirt with her. Those were the times that Penny's eyes lit up and her beautiful smile played across her face.
Penny is survived by her husband Kenny and daughter, Tammy (Gerry) Davis of Orofino; Kirk (Carla) Olmstead and Robin Olmstead of Lewiston and Dulsey Olmstead of Spokane Valley, WA; her sister, Madeline Umphenour of Kamiah and her brothe,r Floyd (Dianne) Marshall of Winchester. Her grandchildren include Brandi and Ashley Kuykendall and Ryan Schlieper; Steavie and Tarron Olmstead Forsman; Danielle (Jerry) Brown; Saxxon and Dallin Vaughn and Tristan Painter. Penny is also survived by four great-grandchildren Haili and Graci Nelsen and Alecia and Alexis Brown. She is preceded in death by her mother and father and brother Richard Marshall.
A memorial service will be held at 11 am Friday, June 1, at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel in Orofino. There will be a potluck dinner following the service at 1 p.m. at the Orofino City Park.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Huntington's Disease Society of America at HDSA.org.

Raymond LeRoy Moore, 60, formerly of Orofino, Pierce
Raymond LeRoy Moore, 60, passed away Friday, May 11, 2012, at his residence in Lewiston. He was born Nov. 18, 1951, to James L. Moore and Phyllis (Wood) Moore, in Clarkston, WA.
He graduated from Kamiah High School in 1970 and attended Lewis-Clark State College from 1991 to 1993. He lived in Kamiah from 1951 to 1971, then in Pierce until 1976. He then lived in Orofino until 2004, Mount Vernon, WA, from 2004 to May 2012, and finally in Lewiston. He worked at the Potlatch Jaype mill from 1971-2000 and various electrical jobs until March 2007.
Raymond married
Peggy Warren Jan. 1, 1971, in Pierce. They later divorced.
He enjoyed being out in the woods, spending time with his children and grandchildren and spending time with his companion, Rosemarie Moses. He was the protector of the family and always enjoyed helping others.
He is survived by his daughters, Bridjett and Brent Bushey of Lewiston, Salena Moore of Pullman, WA and Kerrie and Victor Matos of Oklahoma; sisters Charlotte Hendren and Steve Dahlin of Sequim, WA, Linda and Paul Kent of Idaho Falls, and Roberta and Tim Monroe of Coeur d'Alene; grandchildren Jasmin, Ryan, Bethany and Alexis, all of Lewiston; and beloved pet Cody. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hilda Phyllis and James L. Moore; stepmother Marjorie Moore; and brother James A. Moore.
Graveside service is at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Kamiah cemetery. Larry Terherst will officiate. A private viewing was held.
Herman C. 'Dusty' Rhodes, 74, Orofino
Dusty Rhodes passed away on Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at home after a short battle with cancer.
He was born Dec. 31.1937 to Walter and Beulah (Rhodes) Reffett of Orofino.
Dusty worked construction in Alaska, Idaho, Washington and Texas. He retired in 1993 from the Operating Engineers out of Spokane, WA. He loved going to the coast and spending winters in Arizona. His special thing was the annual hunting trip with his son and nephew.
He is survived by his wife Linda at home; his son, Charles and Kriss Rhodes of Hayden; his daughter, Lori and Wayne Galland of Rathdrum; three grandchildren, Raela and Eric Rhodes and Heather Galland; and one great granddaughter, Chloe Chapman all of the Hayden area.
He was preceded in death by his parents Walter Rhodes, Beulah Reffett and step father John E Reffett of Orofino
As per his wishes there will be no service. Pine Hills Funeral Chapel and Crematory is in charge of the cremation and he will be put to rest at Memorial Gardens in Hayden where he wanted to be close to his family.
There will be a gathering at the house in Orofino for those who wish to come and remember him on Saturday, May 19, and a family gathering in Hayden when he's put in his final resting place.
Cecil D. Daniels, 69
Cecil D. Daniels of Cherrylane was called to rest Thursday, May 3, 2012, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston. His golden heart stopped beating after a long battle with Vascular Dementia.
Cecil was born Aug. 8, 1942, to David P. and Zelma (Porter) Daniels in Kendrick. Cecil married
Vivian Corbett in Orofino, Sept. 14, 1960. From this marriage came two sons: Cecil G. and David P. Daniels. When Cecil wasn't busy being a mechanic, he was farming, logging or truck driving. He enjoyed spending time hunting, fishing, camping, mushroom hunting, picking huckleberries, boating, Sunday drives with his family and just hanging with friends and family.
Cecil's family who greeted him at the gates of heaven included his grandmother, Effie; his parents, David P. and Zelma Daniels; his sister, Francis Swan; and his uncle, Vester Daniels. Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, Cecil G. and Hilarie, and David P. and Janice Daniels; his grandchildren and in-laws include: Amanda Dawn Hasenoehrl and Ray, Keri Daniels and Michael Stalder, and Emalie Daniels. His great-grandson, Kegan Stalder, whose visits he thoroughly enjoyed, also survives. Cecil's step-grandchildren are Dawn and Mary Barrett. His brothers and sister-in-law are Phillip D. and Richard C. and Nora Daniels. Last but not least is Cecil's favorite sister, of whom he spoke of often during the end of his illness, Christine Brown and husband Jeffrey. During the many conversations with Cecil, he always asked about his nephew, Kelley.
The family deeply appreciates the wonderful care St. Joseph Regional Medical Center and Orchards Rehabilitation and Care provided for him. We would like to extend a special thank-you to a very close friend of Cecil's who was there for him and provided a shoulder for him to lean on during the difficult periods of his illness. May God bless you for everything.
A memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday at Spalding Park. There will be a closed funeral to follow at a later date.

Milton Eugene Lind, 88, born at Teakean
Milton Eugene Lind passed away Wednesday, April 18, 2012, at the age of 88, due to complications of multiple myeloma. He was born Oct. 19, 1923, in Teakean to Paul and E. Grace (Raby) Lind. As a young boy, he moved with his family to Kendrick, where he attended school, survived typhoid fever, learned the ethics of working hard and the joys of small town living. Upon high school graduation, he signed up to serve in World War II. Milton served in the U.S. Army 344th Field Artillery Battalion, 90th Division. He was with the Headquarters Battery, drove truck on to Utah Beach, Normandy, France, and laid communication lines. Upon his return home from the war he began work as a mechanic for Zimmerly Air Transport in Clarkston, WA. He then worked at Hillcrest Aircraft and enjoyed many years at Gustin Aviation in Lewiston.
Milton married
Joyce Megenity July 20, 1963, and adopted her children, Cindy and Greg. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He did not consider himself a learned man yet all who knew him believe differently. He didn't speak with many words so when he did, it was a good idea to listen. Milton (Milt or Uncle Milty to his friends) was a skilled mechanic and craftsman. He could fix any motor, be it steam, diesel, gas or electric. Pilots from far away would bring their planes to him for repair. His frugal way brought creative solutions to many mechanical problems. He kept automobiles running long after others had given up hope. He brought new life to old steam tractors and engines. If it was intended to run, he could envision how and kept it going. Woodworking was another hobby he enjoyed and he was a skilled whittler. On a dare, he succeeded in building one scale paper model airplane per day in 2010.
Milt was a trustee at the Orchards Methodist Church, served for many years as a member of the Lewiston Orchards Irrigation District board, was proud to be a Kendrick Pioneer and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Baker-Lind Post 3913 in Kendrick. Upon his retirement, he enjoyed his coffee time with friends around town. He liked to retell the jokes and stories his friends and he shared along with a shake of the head for political drama. He and his son enjoyed time together as members of the Experimental Aircraft Association here in Lewiston. Milt was proud to have had the opportunity to visit our nation's war memorials in Washington, DC, through the Honor Flight program for World War II veterans.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Leon and wife Ruby; and brother, Wayne, whom the family lost to combat during World War II. He is survived by his wife, Joyce; his daughter, Cindy Ulmen and her husband John of Lewiston; their children, Jeff with wife Jennifer and their children, Nathan, Nicholas and Jessica, of Boise; Jason with wife Cherie and son Jacob of Meridian; Michael of Bellevue, WA.; and Marcia of Moscow; his son, Greg Lind of Lewiston, and his children Ben with wife Stephanie and daughter Bella of Junction City, KS; Sara Kennely with husband Roger and daughter Lizzy, of Navarre, FL; his brother Robert (Bob) and his wife Daisy of Springfield, OR; sister-in-law Ella Mae James of Cornelius, OR; several nieces, nephews and their families.
All who knew Milt respected him. Most loved him. Please join us in remembering him at his graveside service at 11 a.m. April 28 in the Veteran's Honor section of Lewis-Clark Memorial Gardens in Lewiston. Dinner will follow at the Orchard's United Methodist Church, 1213 Burrell Ave., Lewiston. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) Scholarship Program or the Orchards United Methodist Church.
Nadean O. McKelway, 94, formerly of Peck, Orofino
Nadean Orene McKelway, 94, passed away Saturday, March 31, 2012, at Guardian Angel Homes in Lewiston with her family by her side. Not only was she a beloved wife, sister, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother, she was also our wonderful and cherished mother.
Mom was born June 25, 1917, in Dusty, Wash., to William (Pink) and Freda Greer. In 1919, the family moved to a cattle ranch near Peck. Mom often spoke of the hard work and hard times the family of seven endured during those harsh years just to survive. In later years, the stories about the "old days" were often retold to relatives, friends and grandchildren on warm summer evenings, over a plate of cold watermelon. The inspirational stories were always about family, hard work, good food and an abundance of love.
Mom attended school in Peck and later transferred and graduated from Lewiston High School in 1937. She married
John McKelway, a good-looking doctor's son from Orofino, Nov. 10, 1939, in Lewiston. They made their home at Riverside in Orofino and had the pleasure of eating their first meals in their newly built home and from the same table which was brought in the hold of a sailing vessel by the first McKelway who came to the shores of America more than 100 years before.
Mom and dad moved to Lewiston and settled in the Orchards in 1952. Two of the many benefits that this union produced were their children, Jim and Tonna.
Keeping the family fed and doing all the domestic chores that a stay-at-home mom did in the '50s and '60s, mom later took on sewing for others and eventually, when my sister and I got older, she worked at the Renee Dress Shop in downtown Lewiston doing alterations. She passed down her talents for sewing and cooking to her daughter and granddaughter.
Mom and dad were always busy. Together they joined the Crankers Club, enjoying the functions and where they made many lifelong friends. As a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, she was involved with our school activities while we were growing up and participated in the Mother's Club. She also took on additional sewing for the children's home on Mission Creek. She and dad worked together in their garden growing fresh produce, not only to eat, but also for the simple love of it. They traveled many places in their trailer home with my sister and me in tow, where lasting memories were created. For their 55th wedding anniversary, my wife and I took mom and dad out for a night of dinner and dancing. The happiness on that occasion will always be a wonderful memory.
Years later, when mom began showing signs of dementia, dad was always there for her with his love and undying support. Mom and dad's marriage was a marriage made in heaven that lasted 66 years until dad's passing in 2006. My sister and I were loved and nurtured by two very special parents.
Our family expresses our sincerest love and deepest respect for the wonderful people at Guardian Angel Homes. The "angels" at the Cottage will always be remembered for the care, support and love they showed mom for the eight years she spent there. We have been truly blessed by their care and devotion to her.
Mom is survived by her son, Jim McKelway and wife Chere' of Lewiston; her daughter, Tonna Guilfoy and husband Gene of Moscow; her sister, Francis Wilson; brother Raymond Greer; her grandchildren, Brennan McKelway of Lewiston and Chelsa McKelway of Clarkston, WA; and great-grandchildren Talia, Dylan, Cain and Jonny. She was preceded in death by her brother, Burel, and sister Vretta (Sis).
A vigil service was conducted Tuesday at Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home, followed by the recitation of the rosary. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Stanislaus All Saints Parish, with Monsignor Andrew Schumacher as celebrant.
Derek James Griffin, 18, formerly of Orofino
Derek James Griffin, 18 of Lewiston, died tragically on Thursday March 29, 2012. Derek was born on Sept. 25, 1993 to Billy and Nonie Bettes Griffin in Portland, OR. Derek grew up in Portland until seventh grade when the family moved to southern Oregon for a while before moving to Orofino.
While in Orofino. Derek volunteered at the teen center, helping teen children after school and Derek really made an Impact there.
In November of 2011 Derek and his family moved to the Lewis-Clark valley.
Derek attended Orofino high school, before attending Clarkston, WA and Lewiston high schools.
Surviving Derek are his parents, Billy and Nonie Bettes Griffin; Derek's siblings, Brandon and Breanna Griffin of Puhrump, NV, and Nathan and Shantel Griffin of Lewiston. Also surviving Derek are his grandparents, Ralph and Nona Bettes, of Orofino, Kathy and Joe Robinson of Kooskia, and Bill Griffin and Kim Linker, of Happy Camp, CA, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, friends and cousins.
There will be a Memorial Service Wednesday, April 4, at 1 p.m. at the Living Word Missionary Baptist Church, at 707 Preston Ave. Lewiston.

Carol Joyce Wunderlich-Dugger, 66, Orofino
Carol Joyce Wunderlich-Dugger, 66, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and life-long friend to many passed away on March 28, 2012, after a courageous battle with a rare form of cancer.
Carol was born on Christmas Day, 1945, to Gene and Alice Wunderlich, at the Burns Hospital, Orofino. Gene and Alice were unable to come up with a name for their newborn, so Dr. Robinson said that if they didn't name her soon, he would name her "Christmas Carol" - and so the name was given.
She joined her two sisters at their home in "Jingle Town" where she lived a happy childhood with many of her playmates who are still her dearest friends today.
Carol participated and was awarded title of Princess in the IOC Orofino Lumberjack Days Royalty in 1964.
She attended twelve years of high school in Orofino graduating in 1964, and received her degree in Education from the University of Idaho in 1971. She married
her high school sweetheart, Michael Dugger, on May 21, 1966. The surprise of their life came when they were told by her doctor (during delivery!) that they were having twins. Jenifer and Jeffrey Dugger were born in 1970. Although they moved to Walla Walla from 2000-2006, Orofino has remained their permanent home since 1971.
Carol was active in the Orofino community by serving on the Clearwater Valley Hospital Board, the Clearwater County Memorial Library Board and as a treasurer for the Clearwater Historical Society. She was a member of the American Association of University Women, the Hit and Miss Club and the Orofino Methodist Church. Part of her working career included employment as a writer/editor with the USFS Clearwater National Forest, an English/History teacher at Orofino Jr. High School and a clerk for the Clearwater County Board of Commissioners.
Carol adored her grandchildren and loved spending time with her family. About 10 years ago, tea parties with her granddaughters, sisters and friends became a special hobby. Carol was a ferocious reader and a prayer warrior. She hated to cook (when they built their home she made sure the kitchen was the smallest room in the house) but she loved good food, and she loved to travel, vacationing often on the Oregon Coast. With her full-of-life personality, wit and charm, Carol touched the lives of the many people with whom she had contact.
She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Mike; her daughter, Jeni and husband, Mike Fitzgerald; son, Jeff Dugger and wife, Jocelyn; grandchildren, Hannah and Paige Dugger, and Caden and Emma Fitzgerald; sisters Judy (Dean) Brandt, and Norma (Hank) Carpenter; mother-in-law, Margaret Dugger; brother-in-law Clayton (Jodelle) Dugger and family, and sister-in-law Donna (Bob) Peters and family; nephew Mike (Patty) Wilks; nieces, Melanie Finch and Alison (John) Chatfield; and her great nieces and nephews Holly, Jordan, Kira, Christopher, Dalton, Brandton, Wyat and Samantha; and her great-great nieces Rhylee and Kennadi; aunts Peggy Wunderlich, Norma (Johnnie) Somers; and cousins Linda (George) Reed, Larry (Nancy) Wunderlich, John (Cindy) Somers, and Russ (Evie) Closson.
Carol wrote in a Christmas letter that she had the best family in the world - but her family could not have asked for a more wonderful person in their lives. There are no words to express how much she was loved and how much she will be missed.
All family and friends are invited to A Tea Party Celebration of Life in Carol's honor which will be held at the Best Western Hotel in Orofino, on April 4, 2012, from 2 - 4 p.m. Ladies, tea hats are welcome and encouraged! Edward A. Leachman, 87
Edward Alavador Leachman passed away March 26, 2012. He was born March 15, 1925 on Craig Mountain, to Everett A. and Lucy Leachman, the oldest of seven children. He was raised in the area surrounding Lewiston, living in many locations with his parents in his younger years, and cowboying for ranches on the Snake and Salmon River breaks until he joined the U.S. Army during World War II.
He served in Europe until the end of the war, where his outdoor experience and marksmanship as a young man and his courage under fire made him a trusted hand with a Browning automatic rifle. He continued as a military policeman in Germany for a short time during the postwar occupation. Upon return to the Lewiston area after the war, he became involved in the timber industry, where he worked in Bovill and Lewiston, retiring from the Lewiston Potlatch mill as a scaler in 1991. His love of timber abided until his death.
In 1951, he married
Jeanne Harris, with whom he raised two daughters and two sons, all of whom still live and work in Lewiston. He loved the outdoors and continued to hunt with his sons until no longer able in recent years. His family fondly remembers many outdoor experiences and his love of horses and mules from his younger years as a cowboy. He was active in the Lewiston Masonic Lodge for more than 40 years and was involved in the York Rite and the Shrine.
He is survived by his widow, Jeanne; his sons, Jack (Barbara) and Tom (Ronna); his daughters, Terry (Alan) Clark, and Laurie (Charlie) Leachman-MacDonald, all of Lewiston; his brother, Harvey (Edith) of Craigmont; sisters, Lita (Jim) Widener of Post Falls, Linda (Charlie) Oversby of Tukwila, WA, and Margaret (Jim) Dugger, of Orofino. He had four grandchildren, Randy (Christina) Clark, Dan (Ashley) Clark, and Diana Leachman of Lewiston, and Jake (Chelsea) Leachman of Pullman, WA; and one great-grandchild, Corbin Clark; at the time of his passing. He was preceded in death by brothers, Cliff and Dale.
Graveside services will occur at 1 p.m. Friday at the Lewiston Normal Hill cemetery.
