Dolores Marie Jasper, 90, Orofino
Dolores 'Rusty' Marie Lauer Jasper passed away Aug. 26, 2012 in Orofino. She was born Nov. 12, 1921 on a small dairy farm in the village of Shiocton, WI, near Green Bay, WI the fourth of six children born to William and Mary Lauer who both had twin siblings who were married
to each other.
After graduating from high school, Dolores studied nursing at St. Mary's Hospital and Nursing School in Green Bay. Upon graduating as a registered nurse, and with World War II before us, she enlisted in the United States Army Nurse Corps and was commissioned a 1st Lieutenant, and later, a Captain. She met her future husband and lifelong love, Morris 'Gene' Eugene Jasper, in New York City, while both were waiting to be shipped to the European theater of war. They sailed together to England aboard the RMS Queen Elizabeth, the superliner of the Cunard line that had been converted into a troop ship.
Gene Jasper was a 1st Lieutenant in the 82nd Airborne and served throughout France, Holland, Belgium and Germany, including the Battle of the Bulge. After the war she attended art school in Denver, CO, while Gene attended business school there. They married
in 1947 and lived briefly in Illinois and Wisconsin before moving west to Spokane, WA, in 1952. As their family grew to 11 children, Rusty worked on and off as an RN at Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane, while Gene worked for Consolidated Freightways. In 1963, they moved to Orofino where Gene worked for Star Motor Freight and Riverside Water District mostly, and Rusty worked, periodically, as an RN at Clearwater Valley Hospital and was a fulltime Mom, then Grandma.
Rusty was preceded in death by her husband, Gene, in 2001. She is survived by her brother, Donald Lauer of San Antonio, TX; and 11 children: Mary Lee Montgomery of Spokane. Cindy Ponozzo of Orofino, Judy Fuller of Orofino, Bill Jasper of Coeur d'Alene, Jenne Byrne of Arrow Junction, Bob Jasper of Lewiston, Jon Jasper of Lewiston, Jerry Jasper of Bonney Lake, WA, Lorri Bertin of Altadena, CA, Tom Jasper of Orofino, and Tim Jasper of Walla Walla, WA. She is also survived by 30 grandchildren, 12 great-grand children and many nieces and nephews.
The rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Thursday at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel in Orofino. The Latin Tridentine Requiem Mass will be celebrated by Father Michael Irwin of Coeur d'Alene at St. Theresa's Catholic Church (Kalaspo Ave. and C St.) in Orofino on Friday at 10 a.m., followed by graveside service and burial at Riverside cemetery in Orofino. A reception will follow at the Orofino City Park.

Dolores Marie Jasper, 90, Orofino, passed away at Brookside Landing in Orofino Sunday, Aug. 26, 2012.
A Rosary will be held Thursday, Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 31 at St. Theresa's Catholic Church with burial to follow at Riverside cemetery in Orofino.

Richard Louis Hughes, Sr., 73, Orofino, passed away at his home Friday, Aug. 24, 2012.

Alois 'Al' Joseph Kaufmann, 87, Orofino
Alois 'Al' Joseph Kaufmann of Orofino passed away Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2012 at home, four days before his 88th birthday. Al was born in Beaverton, OR, Aug. 26, 1924 to Gus and Anna Kaufmann. He spent the first 62 years of his life in the Beaverton-Hillsboro Oregon area. He completed grade school at St. Mary's Catholic School for Boys in Beaverton. He did not attend high school as planned because his father became ill and Al worked to assist with the family chicken/egg farm.
He worked as a truck driver all of his life, beginning with the Farmers Co-op in Hillsboro and retiring from Terminal Flour Mil in Portland. He enlisted in the Navy in May of 1943 and served in the Pacific on the USS Cimarron, an oil tanker, until his discharge in 1946.
He married
Margaret McMahan Oct. 24, 1946 in Portland, OR. Together they raised six children in Hillsboro. Margaret passed away Oct. 26, 1982. He married
Ethel Waibel Hunter on Sept. 1, 1984 and his family increased with the addition of her two sons. Al retired at that time and moved to Orofino where he spent many hours hunting and fishing.
He was an excellent gardener and there were always plenty of fresh vegetables and fruit for anyone who came by. He was active in St. Theresa's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He volunteered many hours at the church and was always ready to work at the annual parish fundraiser 'doughboy booth' at the Clearwater County Fair.
Al is survived by: Ethel, his wife of 28 years; his six children Mary Ann (Joe) Munda, Stephen (Diane) Kaufmann, Betty Jo (Norm) Van Dyke, Jean (John) Clason, Mark (Lisa) Kaufman, Phillip (Jody) Kaufmann; stepsons, Dan (Kristie) Hunter and Keith Hunter and special friend Diane; as well as 15 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandson. He is also survived by his brother, Robert Kaufmann; sisters, Agnes Keel and JoAnn Westwell, He was preceded in death by his brother, David Kaufmann; sisters, Alice Kaufmann and Sister Jane Frances Kaufmann, SSMO and his grandson, Brian Thomas.
Services will be at St. Matthew's Catholic Church, Hillsboro, OR on Friday, Aug. 31. Rosary will be at 10:30 a.m. followed by funeral mass at 11 a.m. Burial will be at St. Matthew's cemetery. A memorial mass will be celebrated in Orofino at a later date.
Memorial gifts may be made to Mt. Angel Seminary Fund, One Abbey Dr., St. Benedict, OR 97373, for the education of priests.
X.E. 'Bus' Durant, 90, former county commissioner
X.E. 'Bus' Durant passed away Aug. 18, 2012, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. He was born May 11, 1922, in Lewiston, to Xavier and Nellie Durant. Bus was raised in Weippe, with his sister, Verla, and as he always referred to him, the "kid" brother, Benny. He and Benny have remained close all these years, including having lunch on Thursdays, usually at Station 3, in Clarkston, WA. Bus and his wife, Mary Ellen, visited Verla and her husband, Paul Ennis, and their children in Boise and Sun Valley many times.
Bus told great stories about growing up in Weippe and Clearwater County in the 1920s and '30s, including taking a family car trip to the Chicago World's Fair in August and September of 1933. He attended Weippe schools through many of those years, although he moved to Lewiston for his senior year and graduated from Lewiston High School in 1940. He attended the University of Idaho, was in the ROTC program, and served in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II. He was discharged from the 95th M.P. Battalion in August of 1946, having served primarily in France and Germany. Upon leaving the Army, Bus returned to the University of Idaho and graduated in 1947. His parents had established a general merchandise store in Weippe and one in Pierce. In the late '40s, Bus bought out his parents' store in Pierce, while Benny took over the store in Weippe.
Bus married
Mary Ellen Ripley in 1949, and they continued to operate Durant's General Merchandise and Durant's Grocery for many years. Bus served on the City Council and as Mayor of Pierce including during the Centennial Celebration in 1960, which also was attended by Idaho Gov. Bob Smylie. The event was very successful and is still celebrated annually as Pierce 1860 Days. Bus also was a partner in a cabin located off the Laundry Creek Road, eight miles from the North Fork of the Clearwater River, where he allowed many friends and family members to stay while they hunted and fished. Bus liked to prospect for minerals in that area.
Bus and Mary Ellen sold Durant's General Merchandise in 1978, but Bus didn't retire. He was elected Clearwater County commissioner and served for 15 years before retiring and moving to Lewiston in 1993.
In 1948, Bus set up a trap range in Pierce and started a long career of trapshooting. Bus served as president of the Camas Prairie Trap Shooting Association in 1962 and 1967 and was past president of both the Orofino and Pierce gun clubs. In 1964, he was elected ATA Western Zone vice president, remaining on the ATA Executive Committee through 1970 while serving four years as vice president, one year as president of the ATA in 1969, and one year as president ex-officio. In 1975, he was appointed to the Central Handicap Committee and he served as chairman of the Handicap Committee for many years while traveling all over the United States to handicap shooters for ATA-registered events. He was ATA president when the organization's Hall of Fame was dedicated in 1969, and he was enshrined into the hall on Aug. 15, 1989. Bus won many trapshooting awards and was well-known for the time and effort he devoted to trapshooting and for his willingness to help a fellow trapshooter. He participated in many changes to improve the sport, which benefited trapshooters nationwide. He attended the Grand American Trapshoot, held annually in Vandalia, OH, every year from 1962 until 2006, a string of 44 consecutive years and a number he was very proud of. He so wanted to make one more trip to the Grand, but declining health prevented a last trip to his favorite event, which has been moved to Sparta, IL.
Bus was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary Ellen, in 2006; and his sister, Verla. He is survived by his brother, Benny of Lewiston; and niece, Vickie Smith of Weippe; his nephew, Scott Ennis of Cupertino, CA; and nieces, Paula Ennis, of Stowe, VT, and Lynn Ennis Iozzo, of Gladwyne, PA; as well as brother-in-law, Herbert S. Ripley and wife Mary of Lewiston; and nephews, Mike Ripley of Lewiston, Richard Ripley of Spokane, WA, Dan Ripley of Bellingham, WA, and Jeff Ripley of Kennewick, WA.
Services for Bus are planned for 11 a.m. Monday at CrossPoint Alliance Church, located at 1330 Powers Ave., in the Lewiston Orchards.
Memorials can be made to the University of Idaho or Lewis-Clark State College, as Bus and Mary Ellen each established education endowments at both institutions.

'Luke' Clifford Leo Brazeau, 78
'Luke' Clifford Leo Brazeau died early Sunday morning, Aug. 19, 2012, at Clearwater Valley Hospital in Orofino from respiratory failure.
Luke was born on Sept. 5, 1933 to Leo and Georgette Brazeau in St. Maries. Luke loved life, the Lord Jesus, his wife Lynda, his children, family and friends.
Luke is survived by his wife, 6 children, 15 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and a younger sister. He was preceded in death by his father, mother and older sister.
A viewing will be held at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and a graveside service at Fraser cemetery between Greer and Weippe on State Highway 11 at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 25.
There will be a 'Share Your Favorite Memory' Potluck at the Peck Community Center in Peck immediately following the services. Wear casual dress please.

Dorothy Mae Wright, 74, formerly of Orofino
Dorothy Mae Wright left for a better place early on the morning of Aug. 16, 2012. She was born on Jan. 13, 1938 in Weiser to Marvin and Nora (Purcell) Pound. She grew up on a Mann Creek ranch and graduated from Weiser High School in 1956.
After high school, she enrolled at the Lewis Clark Normal in Lewiston where she met and married
Dave Wright on Aug. 30, 1958. The couple would soon have celebrated 54 years of marriage.
As a graduate of Central Washington State University in Ellensburg, WA, Dorothy began a teaching career that began in Kamiah and ended in Orofino with stops at Lake Quinault, WA, Benton City, WA, and Peck along the way. After 22 years in the Orofino area, she and her husband retired to the family ranch on Battle Ridge where they began to raise cattle and trees. In late summer and fall, she became a "coaching widow" with never a complaint by indulging her husband who was trying to get the coaching bug out of his system.
Dorothy was a loving, caring person whose family was her life. She was extremely proud and protective of her grandchildren and their activities and accomplishments and she never forgot a birthday, unless, possibly, it was her own. She loved to cook and sew for her family and friends and had a special love for the wildlife found on Battle Ridge and the surrounding mountains. A daily activity was a late afternoon drive for that very purpose.
She leaves behind her husband, Dave; two sons, Jeff of Orofino and Rob (Laurie) of Coeur d'Alene; four grandchildren, Jordyn, DJ, Jaime, and Stephanie; and a brother, Ron (Paulette) Pound of Weiser. She will be sorely missed by all who loved her.
Services will be held at the Trenary Chapel in Kooskia on Monday, Aug. 20 at 11 a.m. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials could be beginning school supplies for needy children sent to either Orofino or Kooskia Elementary Schools.
Anne Veseth, 20, Moscow
A Rosary will be held Friday, Aug. 17, at 6:30 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church at Polk and First St. in Moscow for Anne Veseth who was killed Sunday, Aug. 12, 2012 when she was hit by a falling snag while working with a U.S. Forest Service crew on suppression of the Steep Corner Fire near Headquarters. The Rosary will last 30 minutes.
Saturday, Aug. 18, at 11 a.m. a funeral service will be held at the Nazarene Church, Sixth and Mountain View Rd., Moscow. The service is expected to last 1.5 hours. The church can seat nearly 1,000 people. A Forest Service Honor Guard will be present.
Immediately following the service, the family invites everyone to a luncheon at St. Mary's Catholic Church in the parish hall adjacent to the church. Those attending need to be prepared to walk several blocks because parking may be an issue.
There will be no graveside service.

Homer H. Kling, 95, formerly of Clearwater County
Homer Hamilton Kling, 95, passed away on Aug. 11, 2012. He was born Oct. 1, 1916, at Lewiston to Albert E. and Theodora (Hamilton) Kling.
He grew up on the Kling ranch near Anatone, WA which was homesteaded by his grandfather in the 1880s. He attended school at Anatone and graduated high school in 1934. He was a hard worker alongside his dad, improving the ranch cattle herds and partnering in purchasing pasture land near the Grande Ronde River. He served in the Navy during World War II as a gunner's mate, primarily on Liberty ships.
After the war, he dated his sister's roommate, Eva Bonner, and they were married
March 16, 1946, at Orofino. The couple's first residence that summer was a ranger station lookout. Homer began working in the woods as a sawyer. His employment was mostly in the Pierce and Headquarters areas of Idaho, and his family resided at Weippe. He also continued to help out at his parents' ranch until he took over the ranch following their deaths in 1954. In 1956, he moved his family to Clarkston, WA and his employment was at local sawmills, including PFI, where he retired in 1970. Homer was seriously injured twice at PFI and worked extremely hard with physical therapy to regain the use of his leg and arm.
Homer always had a second job selling various products door to door. Eventually, he sold Shaklee nutritional products full time until his retirement in 2006 at the age of 90. He attributed his robust health to good nutrition. His sales accomplishments earned him awards of automobiles and travel trips. He truly enjoyed the association with his customers throughout the Lewiston-Clarkston area. Homer was known for his honesty and integrity, which showed in his daily business practices.
Homer was an active member of the Clarkston United Methodist Church and attended every Sunday until his health declined in December 2011. Some favorite family photos show him wearing an apron doing dishes in the church kitchen. He will be remembered as a great story teller - mostly about his experiences during the war and his days working on the farm or in the woods. His memory of younger days was amazing!
He enjoyed reloading his own ammunition for target practice and hunting, as well as owning various rifle types.
His wife, Eva, passed away in 1994. He married
Mabel Bott in 1995. She passed away in 2010. Homer was a resident of the Idaho State Veterans Home in Lewiston at the time of his death. He received the Mike Crapo Spirit of Freedom Award in November 2010.
He is survived by his sister, Carolyn (Mrs. Karl Kaess) of San Diego, CA; his four daughters, Marilyn (Rich) Croy of Coeur d'Alene, Janice (Mike) Hargrave of Nampa, Sharon Kling-Grzybowski of Myrtle Creek, OR, and Karla Terry of Vermilion, OH; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Edward Stanton Kling.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home in Lewiston. Burial will be at Lewis-Clark Memorial Gardens in Lewiston. The family suggests donations, in lieu of flowers, to Idaho Veterans Assistance League North, 821 21st Ave., Lewiston, ID 83501.
Joel 'Jody' Wilson, Jr., 73, Orofino
Joel 'Jody' Wilson, Jr., 73, Orofino, passed away Aug. 10, 2012 at home.
He was born Sept. 4, 1938 to Joel Wilson and Bessie Proctor. He grew up in Crane Meadows and then moved to Glenwood near Kamiah where he graduated from the eighth grade. He later moved to Orofino.
He worked for the U.S. Forest Service at Canyon Ranger Station until he retired. He was a long standing member of the NRA.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Anne Wilson.
Survivors include his sister, Josephine Sherard of Orofino; nephews, Leonard Sherard or Kansas City and Donnie Sherard of Orofino; cousins, Oscar Wilson and Denny Wilson of Reubens, Gene White and Bill White of Orofino, Alice Wilson of Texas; grand nephews, Brian Sherard of Orofino, Aaron Sherard of Reubens, Kevin Sherard of Orofino, Isaac Wilson of Reubens and Gavin Sherard of Orofino.
There will be a graveside service for family and friends.
