Jane Violet Armstrong, 95, Orofino, passed away Thursday, May 26, 2011, at Clearwater Valley Hospital in Orofino.
Cremation will take place and a memorial service will be held at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel Thursday, June 2, at 11 a.m.

Carl Edward Garrett, 85, Orofino, passed away Wednesday, May 25, 2011, at Clearwater Valley Hospital in Orofino.

Elizabeth Ferne Mitchell, 81, Orofino
Elizabeth 'Ferne' Mitchell, 81, Orofino, passed away Thursday, May 19, 2011, at Clearwater Valley Hospital in Orofino. She was born May 17, 1930 to Ervin and Elizabeth Stewart Barney in Butte, MT.
She attended high school in Ennis, MT. She met John W. Mitchell in Montana, where they were married in 1973.
She moved to Orofino with her husband in 1991.She had many occupations: waitress, heavy equipment operator and long haul truck driver, traveling throughout the U.S. She returned to Orofino when she retired in 1992.
Ferne was a member of the First Christian Church, the senior citizens center and volunteered at the Fish Thrift Store.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Gerald Barney; brother-in-law, Joe Mitchell; daughters, Penny and Linda; and husband, John.
She is survived by her sister-in-law, Darby Mitchell; her daughter, Dawn Lynn Clark; granddaughters, Tina Welker, Jodi Miner and Faye Maddox; great granddaughters, Myla and Molli Miner and Averi and Paige Maddox; and many nieces and nephews, and loving friends.
A memorial service was conducted Saturday at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel and Crematory in Orofino.

Ruby Mae Sears, 80, Orofino
Ruby Mae Sears, 80, Orofino, passed away Monday, May, 16, 2011, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston.
She was a long time member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary in Orofino. She loved to hunt and fish, listening to the birds, gardening, working in her flower beds, watching the deer in her yard or in the meadow by her cabin. A very kind and gentle lady, she was always caring and thoughtful of others. She takes with her the love of all who knew her and will be greatly missed.
Ruby was born March 15th, 1931, in Stillwater OK, to William and Grace Self.
She is survived by her husband of 44 years William (Whitey) Sears, and extended family; sister, Agnes Beare and her husband, Ben, of Cataldo; grothers, Bill Self of Osborn; Pete Self, and his wife, Ann of Paulsbo, WA; Uncle Jim Self of Caldwell; daughters, Judy Morris, and husband, Rick of Lewiston; Marlous Bortz of Nevada; grandchildren, Rich Morris and wife, Ladena; John Morris and wife, Kathy, Trina Morris; Bill Flatt, all of Lewiston; Kevin Knopes of Post Falls and Steven Knopes. She is also survived by great grandchildren; Tyler Snyder, Shanda and Kylie Morris, Ryan Triplett, Erin and Heather Flatt; plus many others of her extended family, all of whom she dearly loved.
Memorial service for Ruby will be held at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel in Orofino, Monday, May 23rd, 2011 at 11 a.m. Chaplain Patrick Wolf will officiate. The family is asking that any contributions please be made to the Lewiston Fire Department.

Opal Virginia Walsvig, 99, formerly of Pierce
Opal Virginia Walsvig passed away peacefully Saturday, May 7, 2011, at Clarkston Care Center in Clarkston, WA. She was 99 years young. She was born Sept. 30, 1911, at Dry Fork, WV.
She was one of five children. Her family moved to Fraser in 1913, then to Upper Fords Creek, Orofino and finally to Pierce. She graduated from high school there in 1929.
Opal married Herb Gridley May 7, 1932. They moved to Bliss and farmed until 1955. They then moved to Lewiston. There they bought the Mint Bar and operated it until 1963. Herb passed away February 1966.
Later Opal married Oscar Walsvig. They lived in Riggins for several years then moved to the Clarkston area. They later divorced.
Opal became active in the Trinity Lutheran Church. One of the projects that she really enjoyed was making school bags for children that might not have one. She was an avid gardener and maintained an interest even at 99. Only in her later years did she need help with her garden, but her church friends helped her out.
She kept in touch with many friends throughout the years.
Others preceding her in death included two brothers and a sister. Opal is survived by her sister, Thelma McPherson of Juliaetta; three nieces, Phyllis Himmelright of Clarkston, Ella Joyce of Kamiah and Carol Brown of Juliaetta; a nephew, Bob Snyder of Boise; stepson, Myles Walsvig of New Richardson, WI; stepdaughter, Shirley Dickenson of Gifford; and numerous great-nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 920 Eighth Ave., Lewiston, with burial to follow at Lewis-Clark Memorial Gardens. Viewing is from 1 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home in Lewiston.

Charles Vincent Summers, 86, Orofino, passed away Friday, May 6, 2011, at Clearwater Health and Rehabilitation in Orofino.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 12, at Riverside cemetery in Orofino. Pine Hills Funeral Chapel and Crematory is caring for arrangements.

Arthur Leroy Henson, 72, Orofino
Arthur Leroy Henson, 72, Orofino, passed away Friday, May 6, 2011, at Clearwater Valley Hospital in Orofino. He was born July 26, 1938.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 14, 2011 at the Orofino Community Church with a covered dish dinner to follow at the Veterans of Foreign Wars, 330 Michigan Ave. in Orofino.

Cora May Montambo, 79, Orofino
Cora May Montambo, 79, Orofino, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2011 in Clarkston, WA.
Cora was born Aug. 23, 1931 to Richard and Virginia Sumpter of Ione, WA.
In 1957, Cora married Ronald Freeman, together they had a daughter, Sandra Leigh, and made their home in California. The marriage later ended in divorce. Cora and Sandy moved to Orofino in 1980 where she owned and operated an answering service. On Feb. 5, 1984, Cora married Bruce Montambo. They moved to Lewiston where she worked as a cashier for local retailers. After 17 years and retirement they move back to Orofino.
Cora enjoyed traveling, collecting art work, painting, her animals, shopping and meeting new people.
Cora is survived by her husband at the family home; five step-daughters, Kay Armenta of Olympia, WA, Lynn Bolz of Weippe, Sandy Montambo of Clarkston, WA, Laura Jared of Clarkston, and Joan Zimmerman of Pomeroy, WA; a sister, Lorena Larsen of Medling Falls, WA. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Richard and Virginia; sister, Clara Davaz and daughter, Sandra Leigh Freeman. Of special mention are her beloved pets, Katie and Maggie.
As requested by Cora, no funeral service will be held at this time. A private family gathering will take place at a later date.

Bettilou Irene Pierce, 77, formerly of Headquarters
Bettilou Irene Pierce was born Nov. 25, 1933, in Moscow, to Floyd and Mary Frances Geisendorfer Snow. She passed away April 29, 2011.
Floyd Snow died in 1935 when she was two years old and she was adopted by Walter D. Field when he married her mother in 1936.
Her early childhood was in Headquarters, where she attended school grades first through third. The family moved to Lewiston where she attended Webster Elementary and Lewiston High School, graduating in 1951.
She attended the University of Idaho and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in science and education in 1955. She obtained her master's degree in biology from Kansas City University in 1975.
Betti married Charles G. Pierce June 1955. His career was in the U.S. Marine Corps and they lived in a number of states. She was glad when her husband retired and they settled in one spot. That was a home in Ginger Blue, MO, on the Elk River.
She loved teaching, and first taught high school English in Honolulu, HI followed by teaching sciences in Jacksonville, NC, and Albany, GA, then at East High School in Kansas City, MO, and her last teaching job was junior high sciences at Southwest City, MO. She retired from full-time teaching in 1997 but continued as a substitute teacher for several years.
These are comments from some of her former students:
"We were her kids while she had us and demanded the best out of us."
"She was my favorite teacher at Southwest City."
"I still remember her making me look in the mirror and shout 'I am somebody!' "
"Thanks for everything Mrs. Pierce - you touched a lot of lives."
She moved back to Lewiston in 2007 to be closer to her sister and brother-in-law.
Her second love was weeding in the garden, watching her favorite soap operas, reading mystery novels, chatting with friends and taking care of her two cats.
Bettilou Pierce was a grand ol' gal who inspired many lives with her grit, curiosity, sense of humor and passion for the sciences of this Earth. She will be missed by all who knew her.
Survivors include her three sons, Daniel E. Pierce and Kerry Holloway of Blaine, WA, Charles G. Pierce Jr. and Julie of Newtown, New South Wales, Australia, and David S. Pierce of Pasadena, TX; one grandson; Corbin Pierce; two granddaughters, Alice Pierce and Lila Pierce; sister, Kathryn Talbott and Richard of Lewiston; a cousin, Margaret Snow and her husband, Dennis Anderson of Arizona.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles G. Pierce Sr.; her parents, Marifran Field, Floyd Snow and Walter D. Field; her sister, Ruth Frances Field; and her brother, John E. Field.
No service will be conducted and Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home of Lewiston is handling arrangements.
Her family suggests memorials to the Nez Perce County Historical Society, Paralyzed Veterans of America or the charity of donor's choice.
