Janet Louise Stevens Kingen, 63, born in Orofino
Janet Louise Stevens Kingen was born in Orofino on Nov. 1, 1947 to Ken and Eva Stevens. She passed away Saturday, July 9, 2011.
She attended Orofino High School in the early 60's. She married the man of her dreams, Pete Kingen on Jan. 2, 1965 in Orofino. They made a home in Weippe and later moved to Pete's family ranch in Fraser.
Their daughter, Julie was born in 1966 and a second daughter, Deann was born in 1969. They moved to Lewiston, Idaho in 1974 and raised their family. Janet was a very good loving wife and mother. She traveled to various road construction jobs with her husband before retiring back to the family ranch in Fraser in 1997. She loved to cook, clean, play pinochle, do puzzles and watch movies. She enjoyed her grandkids. Janet loved to help people and she never met a stranger.
She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Pete Kingen; her daughters, Julie Woods of Post Falls and Deann and her husband Greg Sanders of Canal Winchester, OH; and her grandsons, Brandon Woods and Colter and Caleb Sanders.
She was proceeded in death by her father, Ken Stevens, mother Eva Stevens, sisters, Joan Ann and Linda Montambo.
Funeral services will be held at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel in Orofino on Wednesday, July 13, at 10 am. Pastor Don Blain is officiating. Burial will be at Fraser cemetery. A dinner will follow at the Fraser Community Center.

Zoie Lorinda McLean, 106, Orofino passed away at Brookside Landing Retirement Community in Orofino Thursday, July 7, 2011.

Michael Evan Kernin, 68, Dworshak Dam worker
Mike passed away due to lung cancer Sunday, July 3, 2011, at home. He was born Nov. 5, 1942, in Ainsworth, NE, to Evan Kernin and Ruby L. Lewis Kernin.
He grew up in Ainsworth then moved to Kimberly. He served in the U.S. Air Force as an air traffic controller from 1961 through 1965, being stationed at Travis Air Force Base and Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan.
Mike married Joan Greene on New Year's Eve 1965 in Twin Falls. The couple moved to Lewiston in 1968, when Mike went to work on the Dworshak Dam in Orofino.
He worked all over the U.S. and was usually the pipe superintendent or general foreman for such companies as Cal Edison, GSI, Nepco and Kamtech, just to name a few.
Mike completed coursework throughout the years at Boise Junior College, Lewis-Clark State College and Yakima Community College.
He was strong in his convictions and was known for his quick wit. He appreciated great music, good bargains and was always looking to do things "his way." We love you Dad!
Surviving Mike are his sons, Michael R. and Pam of Sitka, AK, Jeness and Ashlee of Lewiston, and Darin and Kim, and Tyson Kernin, all of Clarkston; WA; daughters, Tegwen and Kelly Kaufman, and Heather Kernin, all of Clarkston; grandchildren, Peyton and Drew Kaufman, and Kadan and Tharin Kernin, all of Clarkston, Coltin Kernin of Hawaii, Jadyce Kernin of Lewiston, and Nichel and Alex Kernin, both of Sitka. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and brother, Gary Kernin.
A gathering of friends and family will take place at 6 p.m. Saturday in the Orchid Room above Morgan's Alley on Main Street in Lewiston.

Donna Lorraine Rueppel, 83, Peck, passed away Thursday, June 30, 2011, in Spokane, WA.

John David 'Jack' Smolinski, 77, Weippe
A lifelong resident of Weippe, Jack, also known as Cadillac Jack, passed away Sunday, June 26, 2011, in Spokane, WA. Jack was born in Fraser - the doctor from Orofino arrived after he was born on a horse. The date was Dec. 29, 1933. He was born to Edward and Ruth Smolinski. Jack has a sister LaVilla (Wink) Tolonen of Clarkston, WA and a brother Glen and Carroll Smolinski of Weippe.
Jack attended school in the one-room schoolhouse through the fifth grade in Fraser and graduated from Cottonwood School in Fraser.
He married Caryl Winther on Jan. 12, 1953. The couple had two daughters, Christine Walsh, and Beverly and Barry Bailey. Their grandchildren are Tammy Anderson, Kimberly and Toby Cox, Larry and Dawn Hesler, and Amy Bond; great-grandchildren, Dylan Anderson, Cody, Kiana and Kalyssa Hesler, and Connor Cox; step-great-grandchildren, Skyler and Graham Hill. Jack was preceded in death by two brothers; one sister; his wife Caryl,; and great-granddaughter, Alicia Hesler.
Through the years he logged for Wallace Smolinski for 16 years during the summers. In 1961, he was employed by Jess Johnstun Mills and then worked the family farm until he retired. His biggest joys were playing cards and traveling to Nevada with friends. He enjoyed poker at the fire hall. His peony flowers were cared for with great pride through the years. Jack was a storyteller and he handed out silver dollars to all of the small children he came across. Jack had fond memories of hunting camp with Uncle Tuff; the two would fish and tell stories, and have a great time.
He helped build the Weippe Volunteer Fire Department building. He was a member and president of the Clearwater County Livestock Sale for many years, served three terms on the Nez Perce Rochdale Board and was on the committee for the ACSC.
Please send any memorials to the Northwest Children's Home in Lewiston.
A private family memorial service will be held at Fraser cemetery.

Gordon James Boyd, 66, Orofino, passed away Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at his home.

Moneta Stout Westberg, 68
Moneta R. (Stout) Westerberg, 68, of Pullman, WA, passed away on Tuesday, June 28, 2011 at her Pullman home.
Moneta was born Oct. 9, 1942 in Douglas, WY to Walter and Ruth (Bloem) Race. As a girl growing up, she moved with her family to Lewiston where she completed school, graduating from Lewiston High School.
She married George Moon and they later divorced. Moneta married Claude Stout in 1970 and lived in Uniontown, WA where together with Claude they farmed, ranched and raised the family. Moneta and Claude later divorced. In June of 1990 Moneta married Clinton Westberg and since that time they have made Pullman their home.
In addition to the years on the farm and ranch, Moneta also operated the Strawberry Patch, where she crafted floral arrangements. She was a very talented lady who enjoyed crafts, painting, and interior design, working with Blooms Interiors through the years. She was an avid gardener, especially flowers and was an accomplished artist.
Moneta was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, who enjoyed time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Moneta was an active part in the life of the Pullman Hospital, serving in different capacity's including the auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband Clinton at their Pullman home; her three sons and their spouses, Bill and Sharon Stout of Uniontown, Bob and Sara Stout of Elk River and Dallas and Mary Stout of Uniontown; two stepdaughters, Carla Close and Claudia Birschauer; two sisters, Sally Bowey and Waletta Foster; nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Carmen, and two brothers, Dallas and Terry.
The viewing will be held on Friday at Kimball Funeral Home in Pullman, WA from 1-6 p.m. The memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 5, at the funeral home.
Memorial donations are suggested to the Pullman Regional Hospital Foundation.

Charlotte Kathleen Weinmann Montoya, 71, born in Orofino
Charlotte Kathleen Weinmann Montoya, 71, formerly of Orofino, passed away June 18, 2011 in Gresham, OR from complication of pneumonia following cancer.
Charlotte was born in Orofino Sept. 25, 1939.
She lived most of her life in Albuquerque, NM, but had lived in Damascus, OR since 2005.
Charlotte was very creative and made beautiful art work that she gave to friends and family.
She is survived by her son, Gino Montoya of Albuquerque, NM and her sister, Mrs. Joe Kincaid of Damascus, OR; as well as several nephews and nieces. Charlotte was preceded in death by her daughter, RaLee Montoya; her brother, Victor Weinmann; half-brother, Larry Lyon, and her parents, Eugene 'Hughie' Weinmann and Mable Bloom Weinmann Lyon.
A celebration of her life will be held later this summer in Damascus and a memorial service will be held in New Mexico at a later time.

Kelsey Sue Anderson, 19, Orofino
Kelsey Sue Anderson was born May 22, 1992 in Lewiston to Chris and Sue Anderson. Kelsey lost her life on June 9, 2011 in Hagatna, Guam at Andersen Air Force Base.
Kelsey loved playing soccer! She started playing soccer in first grade and played all the way through high school. She loved all her soccer teammates and coaches. In Kelsey's short life of 19 years, she had many hobbies. She loved her horses, photography, riding motorcycles and snowmobiles, camping, hunting and fishing. When she was younger, she also enjoyed jazz and tap dance, as well as piano. But most of all she loved spending time with her family. Her favorite time was when her family took a vacation to Maui, Hawaii. She planned to live there one day.
She was the light and energy of her family and she will be greatly missed, especially her beautiful smile.
She attended elementary through high school in Orofino. She graduated from Orofino High School in 2010. Kelsey joined the Air Force and went to Basic Training in Lackland, TX in August of 2010. She graduated from basic training in October of 2010. Her parents were very proud and attended Kelsey's graduation in Texas. She was then assigned to Andersen Air Force Base in Guam with the 36th Security Forces Squadron.
She is survived by her parents, Chris and Sue Anderson; older brother, Max Anderson of Orofino; fraternal grandmother, Arlene Anderson of Arizona and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and second cousins. She was preceded in death by her fraternal grandfather, John H. Anderson; and maternal grandparents, Garold and Margaret Walker.
A celebration of Kelsey's life will be Saturday, June 18, at Champion Park, the soccer field above Orofino Elementary School at 2 p.m. with a potluck to follow.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Kelsey's name at AmericanWest Bank to Orofino High School Soccer Program.

John E. 'Jack' Reffert, Jr., 88, Orofino, passed away Sunday, June 5, 2011 at Clearwater Valley Hospital in Orofino.

Jane V. Armstrong, 95, Orofino
Jane V. Armstrong was born Dec. 24, 1915, in Winslow, AR, to Harold and Olive Duncan. She was the second child of seven. She had been a resident of Brookside Landing in Orofino for nine years and died Thursday, May 26, 2011, at Clearwater Valley Hospital in Orofino with her family by her side.
Jane married Tappy Lee Armstrong in 1941. He passed away in 1987.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her son; Benny Smith; her daughter, Cheryl Armstrong; daughter-in-law, Billie Jo Armstrong; her parents; sister, Irene Hawkins; and her brothers, Jack Duncan, Bob Duncan and Thomas Duncan.
She is survived by her son, Harold and Marsha Armstrong of Chandler, AZ; her daughter, Carol and Alan Hengen of Orofino; eight grandchildren, Robin and Rick Rieck of Cedar Creek, TX; Duncan Smith of Texas, Dawn and Rick Kelly of West Virginia, Lisa and Rob Benke of Tucson, AZ, Ken and Gail Hengen and Marci and Blaine Bonner of Orofino, Travis Hengen and Les Linares of Weymouth, MS; nine great grandchildren, Russell Rieck, Rachel Kelly, Erik Kelly, Erin Benke, Sean Benke, Alan Hengen, Austin Hengen, Amanda Bonner and Andrea Bonner; and sisters, Alma Duncan and Sue Riegers, both of Colorado Springs, CO.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel in Orofino.
The family has requested that donations be made to a charity of your choice in lieu of flowers.
