Beatarice 'Bea' C. Brandt, 89
The sweet and kind heart of Beatrice C. 'Bea' Brandt, 89, ceased beating on Monday, Sept. 13, 2010, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston following a brief illness.
Bea was born in Augusta, KS, on March 3, 1921, the third of 13 children of Willis and Ruth Haynes Collins. She traveled West with her two sisters as a young woman and met and married
Leonard H. Brandt on Aug. 8, 1953, in Puyallup, WA. They lived in the Seattle area many years while Leonard worked and eventually retired from the Boeing Co. They were avid hunters and enjoyed commercial fishing in Neah Bay.
After being full time RV'ers for several years, they settled in Clarkston in 1993. Leonard passed away Sept. 7, 1999.
For the past few years, Bea lived at Evergreen Estates residential apartments, where she made many wonderful friends. She was a woman who was easy to love and who endeared herself to everyone she met. You rarely parted from her without her saying "God bless you and keep you safe" and she meant it! She loved the outdoors, watching wildlife and reading every road sign as you drove by it.
She had many friends through her spiritual associations at the Valley Christian and Faith Tabernacle churches. Bea especially enjoyed her Bible study sessions and spent the years after Leonard's death attending church functions, socializing and dining out with her dear departed friend and neighbor, Lavitta Papan. They had many laughs together and referred to themselves as the "Burns Street Twins." The two were well known at all of their favorite venues. Bea also had a special and loving relationship with her granddaughter-in-law, Debbi, and they spent many hours enjoying each other's company.
Survivors include stepdaughters Verla and Greg Robinson of Pierce, and Fran and Larry Gilewich of Sherwood Park, Alberta, Canada. Grandsons include Mike and Debbi Duffy of Lenore, Bob Duffy of Twin Falls, Stephen Keeley of Stettler, Alberta, and Brent Keeley of Sherwood Park. Great-grandchildren include Sunny and Darrin Haynes and daughter Harper of Lewiston, Trent, Reid and Kaitlyn Keeley of Stettler, Alberta, and MacKenzie and Matthew Keeley of Calgary, Alberta. Bea is also survived by three siblings, sisters Carrol Conner and Dorothy Balsimo of Winfield, KS, and a brother, Bill Collins, of Oregon.
Bea's life will be celebrated at a memorial service at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24, at Merchant Funeral Home in Clarkston. Her special friend, the Rev. Greg Pedersen of Faith Tabernacle Church, will officiate.

Kayana Joyce Bacus, 66, Orofino, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2010 in Orofino.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Sept. 26 at the Peck Community Center.

Dora Mae Pyles, 88
Dora Mae Pyles, 88, of Clarkston, WA passed away Monday, Sept. 6, 2010, at Tri-State Memorial Hospital in Clarkston. Dora was born Feb. 14, 1922, at Enterprise, OR, to Chet and Ethel Mae Cox Hammack.
Dora was raised and went to school in Enterprise, where she met and married
Mansel G. Pyles on May 20, 1941, at Lewiston. They were married
69 years.
Dora and her husband moved to Nezperce, where they lived for 30 years. She cooked for the school district and they raised their three daughters there. The family returned to Enterprise and later moved to Prineville and Irrigon, OR. She worked for Lamb-Weston at Boardman, OR. They moved to Clarkston to be closer to family and friends, where they spent the last 20 years.
Dora was a member of New Bridges Community Church and the Eagles Lodge of Lewiston. As a homemaker Dora really enjoyed cooking, gardening, canning, crafts and playing cards. She really loved to fish; "she was a catcher".
Dora is survived by her husband of 69 years, Mansel; daughters, Linda and Don Berry of Orofino, Dodie Giles and Mark Edgar, and Nancy Bonson, all of Clarkston; brother, Willard and Novella Hammack of Prineville; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Weldon Hammack, and sister, Ruth Stinger.
Upon her request, no services will be conducted. The family will be gathering at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Merchant Funeral Home of Clarkston.
Carroll Adkison, 81, built Riverside (Frensdorf) Apartments
J. Carroll Adkison, 81, of Grangeville peacefully passed away at home on Sept. 7, 2010 surrounded by family.
Carroll was born Elbert Carroll Adkison at Portland, OR on August 23, 1929 to Elbert Carl and Georgia Belle Adkison. He went to grade school at Clarkston, WA, then Portland, OR, then moved to Polsbo, WA during his early teens. Carroll married
Virginia Bentz on May 16, 1955 at Reno, NV. They have been married
55 years and have 3 children.
Carroll worked at the Kitsap County Press as a 13-year-old and liked to reminisce about all that he learned there as a youngster. He joined the army at age 15 at the end World War II. Carroll teased with his grandkids that the war ended because he joined the army and scared the enemy into surrender.
Carroll and his dad, Elbert Carl, partnered in E. C. Adkison & Son from 1949 - 1964. One of his first jobs with his dad was stuccoing the Lewiston Grain Growers warehouse where the Lewiston Tapadero is now. After the warehouse was eventually torn down, Carroll did the masonry on the new Tapadero building. He started Carroll's Building Specialties in 1965. He formed Adkison Corp July 1976. Carroll loved working. Many people reading this have his handiwork in their home; including stone, tile, plaster, stucco, he was a true artist. Carroll was a general contractor for many years and built several buildings including Pankey's Foods, Cloninger's Market, the Lewiston Social Security Office, Kamiah Burkhart Homes, Riggins Irwin Center (of which he was part owner), Frensdorf (now Riverside) Apartments in Orofino, Kamiah and Grangeville pool houses and the Grangeville City Hall. Carroll always added a little extra to each job he did.
Carroll and Virginia owned Red River Hot Springs from 1977 through 1990. Carroll loved snowcatting the many trails in the Red River area.
Carroll loved their second home in White Bird and found great delight in the gathering of his family and friends there. Carroll was a pilot and he and George Shira enjoyed many hours in the air. Carroll and Virginia shared a jet boat with John and Jeannie Malvich that they enjoyed with family and friends and it brought Carroll absolute joy.
Carroll is survived by his wife Virginia, son Jeffery (Cheri) Adkison, son David (Lisa) Adkison, daughter Jeanna Gollihur (Peter), 15 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and his sister Jean Scott. He was preceded in death by his mother and father and grandson, Evan Gollihur.
A memorial is scheduled Sept. 12 at 3 p.m. at IOOF Hall at White Bird, Idaho with a potluck following the ceremony. Arrangements are under the direction of the Blackmer Funeral Home, Grangeville. Condolences to the family may be sent at: Blackmerfuneralhome.com.
Kay Eldridge, 66, formerly of Weippe
Kay Eldridge, 66 of Grangeville passed away Thursday, Sep. 2, 2010 at the Grangeville Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Kay was born July 18, 1944 at Winchester, a daughter of Raymond and Betty Howerton Rupe. She attended school in Winchester graduating from the last class of Winchester High School in 1962. She married
Bob Eldridge on Dec. 29, 1962 at Winchester. They lived in Winchester, Weippe and Spokane before moving to Grangeville in 1969. Bob passed away Dec. 29, 2002 on their 40th Wedding Anniversary.
Kay worked for the Free Press/Shopper and Eleanor's Clothing Store in Grangeville some years ago. But primarily she enjoyed her job as a mother, grandmother and wife.
She enjoyed gardening, camping, furniture restoring, arts and crafts, tole painting and especially spending time with her family. She also enjoyed spending time in the outdoors. She was a member of the Grangeville Church of the Nazarene.
She is survived by her children, Scott and his wife Lisa Eldridge and their children Derek and Jared; her daughter Shelly Eldridge Evans and her children, Shannon, Savannah and Bobby. She is also survived by two brothers and their wives, Jerry and Patricia Rupe and Darrold and Judi Rupe and a "of the heart" sister Karen Eldridge. She will also be missed by her good friend Bertha Drury and extended family on Bob's side and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept.11, at 11 a.m. at the Blackmer Funeral Home, Grangeville. Pastor Harold Gott of the Grangeville Christian Church will officiate. Harlan Odell Opdahl, 72, Pierce
"When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am." John 14:3
On Sunday, Aug. 29, 2010, Harlan Odell Opdahl, 72, left his worldly shelter to travel to his permanent heavenly home. Harlan passed away peacefully at his home in Pierce, following a heart-related illness.
Harlan was born in Albert Lea, MN on June 17, 1938, to Gertrude and Henry Opdahl. He grew up as a farm kid and graduated from Alden High School in 1956. He attended Waldorf College, earning his Associate Degree in 1958. He married
his high school sweetheart, Barbara I. Ramsdell, on Jan. 17, 1959. He owned a corn shelling business for a short while, then in 1965 a vacation trip to the Pacific Northwest resulted in a move west with his family.
Harlan worked in Pierce at Jaype for Potlatch, Corporation, and for several area loggers until 1979, when he discovered a way to unite his love of the outdoors and hunting with a livelihood. Harlan, his brother Duane and their wives purchased an outfitting business which they changed the name to Triple "O" outfitters, and life became much busier for all of them. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark were kind enough to get lost 200 years ago in the area Triple "O" Outfitters utilized, and Harlan enthusiastically delved into the history of that historic trek and begin leading trail rides and visits to some of the camps Lewis and Clark chronicled. He shared his love and knowledge of the Lolo portion of the trail with people from around the world.
Harlan was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, an honorary lifetime member of the Idaho Outfitter's and Guides Association, Clearwater Search and Rescue, the North Central Idaho Resource Advisory Committee, and served on various committees promoting multiple land use in Idaho. He was a proud endowment member of the National Rifle Association.
Harlan was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to camp, hunt, ride horses, snowmobile and watch Westerns. The spirit of hospitality and generosity was always evident in the Opdahl home. Meals were rarely limited to "just family". Harlan loved the time he spent with friends and family. His Christian faith provided them with a role model, guiding hands and genuine concern for those around him.
Harlan is survived by his wife of 51 years, Barbara Opdahl; 4 children, Gwen and Bob Schryver, Yuma, AZ., Jim and Linda Opdahl, Payette, Diane and Mike Snyder, Baker City, OR, and Sharon and Darrin Hartwig, Lewiston. Other surviving family members include 13 grandchildren, 1 sister, Gloria Peterson of Albert Lea, MN, sister-in-law Violet Opdahl, Lewiston, and numerous much-loved nieces and nephews. If it's true that friends are the flowers of life, Harlan also leaves behind a garden of blessings he called friends.
Harlan was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Gertrude Opdahl, a daughter, Katherine, and his brother B. Duane Opdahl.
A memorial and celebration of Harlan's life will be held at 4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 11, at Timberline School. A dinner will follow at Pierce Community Center.

Darryl Lynn Ingle, 60, Freeman Creek Rd.
Darryl Lynn Ingle, 60, passed away on Aug. 27, 2010 peacefully in her sleep at her home on Freeman Creek Rd.
Darryl was fun and full of life, she always said what was on her mind, her laugh was contagious, her voice was loud and heart was huge! She loved to hangout with her soul mate of 26 years, hunt and fish, ride her four-wheeler, camp, boat, Harley adventures, watch old movies, enjoy campfires and most of all party with close friends.
Darryl is survived by the love of her life, her husband, Don Ingle. She is also survived by her children; Gena (daughter) and Ted, Jason (son) and Heather, and David (son) and Darleene; grandchildren, Jake, Carrie, Jared, Emily, Adam and little Trace; Mother and Father Gene and Shirley Sandy; siblings, Michael (brother) and Karen, and Jeffrey (brother). In addition there are a lifetime of special friends.
A celebration of life in Darryl's honor will be held at the Ingle residence on Sunday, Sept. 5, 2010 at 2 p.m. Her family welcomes friends to join in sharing memories, stories and a special toast to Darryl.

Daniel Alpha Loomis, 85, Orofino
Daniel Alpha Loomis was born Aug. 31, 1924 at 12:30 p.m. in the front bedroom of his home near De Soto, MO. His parents were John Emmitt Loomis and Dorothy Sunshine Loomis. He grew up in the De Soto area and graduated from high school there in May of 1942. From October 1940 to June 1942, Dan worked as a grocery clerk for the Kroger Grocery and Bakery Co.
In June 1942 Daniel joined the U.S. Navy. After several service schools in diesel engine operations and maintenance, he became a part of the Commissioning Crew of the USS LST 470. Dan served on the ship from March 9, 1943 to October 1945 in the South Pacific Operation. He was discharged in May 1945.
From 1946 to 1950, Daniel attended Washington University in St. Louis, MO and graduated with a degree in Business Administration. He worked for the A.S. Aloe Hospital Co. for a time, and then joined the McDonnell Aircraft Company as a Contract Coordinator.
He married
Lois Jeanne DuHadway on June 23, 1951. They have two daughters.
In December of 1960, the family moved to Sacramento, CA where Dan worked as a Contract Coordinator for the Aero-Jet Solid Rocket Plant until June 1964 when Dan began seminary education at the San Francisco Theological Seminary in San Anselmo, CA graduating May 1967 Dan served churches in New Mexico, California, Idaho and Washington. He trained as an Interim Minister and served in that position in several churches before and after retirement in March 1989.
His hobbies were gardening, fishing and reading.
Daniel Loomis is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Lois Jeanne; daughters: Donna Jeanne Wilson and Deborah Anne Loomis; granddaughters: Jennifer Jeanne Achterberg, Kathleen Anne Achterberg, Gretchen Marie Rupp and Hannah Leigh Meyer. Daniel's first great-granddaughter is due to arrive this December.
Daniel passed quietly in the early morning hours of Aug. 27, 2010. He will be missed.

Marvin G. Poe, 79, Peck
Marvin G. Poe departed this life at his ranch in Big Canyon, Peck on Aug. 14, 2010 at the age of seventy-nine. His passing was the result of a tragic accident doing what he loved best, operating machinery and helping others in need of a helping hand.
Marvin was born on Oct. 11, 1930 at Deer Creek, in the vicinity of White Bird. He was the son of Cora Qualey Poe and Claude F. Poe.
On Jan. 4, 1955 Marvin married
the love of his life and best friend, Norma Jean West in Pomeroy, WA.
Marvin is survived by his wife of 56 years, Norma Jean Poe, his son Edward A. Poe of Peck and his two daughters Mary Kris Poe and Jim Nunn of Orofino, Colleen Poe Burnett and husband, Scott Burnett, of North Bonneville, WA; his brother, Burley Poe, and wife, Loretta Poe, of Genesee; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and his beloved friends Eldon Lee, Steve and Sherrie Lee, Brian Lee all of Peck. He is also survived by all of his beloved pets at the family home.
Marvin was most comfortable at home on the 160-acre Poe ranch just outside of Peck. To Marvin his home was his church, his yard his pew and Big Canyon was the greatest cathedral on earth. He loved working the ranch alongside his loving wife, Norma Jean, raising chickens, vegetables and working his orchards of various fruits. Throughout his life Marvin was well known for his mechanical abilities. He never picked up anything broken that he could not fix. Marvin was soft spoken, easy with a smile and had an all around comforting way of making you feel welcome. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved and respected all that nature has to offer. He was a terrific hunter and fisherman, and an excellent marksman whom any person would be hard pressed to match.
Marvin retired from Clearwater County in 1992.
Marvin passed away doing what he loved to do. He is missed by his family, friends and all those who came to know him.

A memorial service for Marvin will be held on Thursday, Aug. 19, 2010 at 5 p.m. at the First Christian Church, 515 Michigan Ave. Orofino.

Willard "Willie" J. Reed, 79, born in Weippe
Willard J. Reed (Willie) passed away Sunday, Aug. 15, 2010. He was born April 13, 1931, in Weippe, to Cecil K. and Mattie Reed. Willie was proud that he had been a Clarkston, WA resident since 1939 and often asked people, "How long you been here?"
Willie married
A. Beatrice Smith on Aug. 1, 1947, at Leland. Willie and Bea settled in Clarkston at the Reed family home, where they raised five children. They were married
for 63 years.
In the early years, Willie worked with his brother as a commercial painter. He later went to work for the Clarkston School District, from which he retired in 1979. He was a member of the Clarkston Jaycees and the Nez Perce County Sheriff's Posse.
In his younger years, Willie rode motorcycles and flew with many of his pilot friends. Willie often took family and friends on camping trips, and enjoyed riding four-wheelers. He taught many family members how to drive various motorcycles. Willie spent many hours restoring antique cars and was extremely proud of his '26 Model T and '29 Chevy Coupe. He loved tinkering in his garage. He collected many antiques and oddities through the years.
He was an avid historian, often sharing his historical knowledge and family history. Willie was a loyal friend. He could often be found in his garage listening to the scanner and sharing jokes, stories and cold beer with good friends. He loved animals and had a variety of pets throughout his life. Willie had a great love of family, and truly loved being with his grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and passed on his knowledge of mechanics, cars and planes to them.
Willie was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Beatrice. He is now at her side. Willie was the last remaining of nine Reed children. He will be dearly missed by his children: Tim Reed and wife Marlene, Sue Pittman, Doug Reed and wife Donna, Janice Reed, and Melissa Wortman and husband Tom, as well as 11 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Willie was a unique man. His stories and sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him.
The family is conducting an open house to honor and remember Willie from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the family home, 1376 Elm St., Clarkston. All friends and family are invited.
