Janice Evelyn "Jann" Atkinson, 65, Orofino
Jann Atkinson, R.N., long time resident of Orofino passed away Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at Clearwater Valley Hospital in Orofino. Jann had fought a long and courageous battle with three different types of cancer. She was 65 years old.
Janice Evelyn was born July 9, 1943 in Morehead City, NC to John M Mellas and Bette Lou (Bonneau) Mellas. She was an only child. Her father was a career Marine and the family travelled all over living in North Carolina, Hawaii, Boston and finally settling in Santa Ana, CA where she graduated High school.
Jann was working in a carpet store where she met her husband, Thomas B. Atkinson. They were married
Nov. 10, 1962 in Santa Ana, CA. Jann adopted her step-son, Tommy Atkinson when he was two years old. She and Thomas had their first daughter Misty in 1964.
Jann worked as an office secretary for Orange County, CA until 1967 when the family moved to Lewiston. She stayed home raising their children and had their second daughter Wendy in 1970.
Jann and Thomas moved their family to Pierce in 1973 where they stayed for about two years and Jann worked for the Forest Service as a tree planter. They then moved to Orofino where the family finally settled in 1975.
Jann worked for a short time for the Soil Conservation District. She really enjoyed animals. She started her own small business at home grooming dogs and was very successful as a dog breeder, under the name "Mis-T-Wend Kennels". Jann raised a variety of breeds for competition purposes; Cocker Spaniels, Newfoundland and Bernese mountain dogs. She showed her dogs all around the region.
As her children grew up and started families of their own and after she supported her husband in obtaining his nursing degree, Jann enrolled at Lewis-Clark State College in the Nursing program. She graduated in May 1992 with an R.N. Degree and started a career at Clearwater Valley Hospital. She worked all aspects of nursing. She loved it and was well respected, very dedicated and well loved for her sincere and kind bedside manner. She worked there until her illness forced her early retirement.
Jann had a great passion and knack for gardening. She loved tending to her flowers and water ponds. In June 2002 her garden was selected to be on the Clearwater Youth Alliance Fund Raiser Garden Tour. Jann enjoyed crocheting and made booties for incoming babies in the community as well as afghans. Even up to a week before she passed she shared her gift. Jann was also known for her love of books and reading and companionship with her beloved dog, Sadie.
Jann had a passion for celebrating Christmas, decorating inside and out with bright lights and festive decorations. It wasn't unusual; in fact it was a tradition in the neighborhood, family and friends to come see what "new" item had been added to the holiday decor.
After retirement she served for a short time as Assistant Deputy Coroner for Clearwater County. Jann became interested in old vehicles, her favorite, her first new car ever owned, a 1965 Mustang. It was well known that only Jann ever drove her car, let alone anyone touch it, especially her husband. Jann and her husband became involved in the Orofino Show and Shine. She was instrumental in organizing the club and developing a high school scholarship. She was secretary for the club for six years until illness forced her to pass the job on.
Jann's greatest love and what she held most dear was her family, holding a special joy for each and every grandchild she was blessed with. She doted on them and enjoyed spending time with them all, making many fond and special memories for those left behind.
Jann was preceded in death by her parents, John Manuel and Bette Lou Mellas.
She is survived by her husband, Thomas Atkinson of Orofino; daughters: Misty Midstokke and son-in-law Jeff Midstokke, of Peck; Wendy Dub and son-in-law Kelly Dub of Farmington, WA; her step-son Tommy Atkinson and two step-grandchildren and grandchildren: Shan (Midstokke) Avila, Brandon Midstokke, Kayler Dub and Kynlee Dub.
