Marianne Koppang, 76, formerly of Orofino
Marianne Koppang passed away Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008, at Orchards Rehabilitation and Care Center in Lewiston. She was 76. She was born March 17, 1932, at Spokane, WA to Melvin and Amelia (Millie) Panus Jukich.
Marianne was raised in Sandpoint and graduated from Sandpoint High School. She attended the University of Idaho at Moscow and Lewis-Clark Normal School (now Lewis-Clark State College) at Lewiston.
She and Milton (Mick) Koppang were married
Oct. 4, 1952, at Sandpoint. The couple moved to Headquarters in 1956, where Mick worked with CPTPA (Clearwater-Potlatch Timber Protective Association). In 1968, the couple moved to Orofino, where they raised their three children, and after Mick's retirement in 1990 they moved to Spokane. Mick passed away in 1991 and Marianne moved to Coeur d'Alene in 1993. Three years ago she moved to Lewiston.
Marianne was a great asset to Mick's career. She was capable of helping in the cookhouse and had been known to fight a few fires on her own. She never hesitated to confront a person throwing flammable material from their vehicle.
She was not only known as grandma but "Magaw" to her grandchildren and "Marianne, the great" to her great-grandchildren.
Marianne is survived by her two daughters and their husbands, Christine and Tim Boehler of Lewiston, and Catherine and Ken Rickel of Hayden; her son and his wife, Marc and Kolleen Koppang of Coeur d'Alene; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Mick; her parents; and a brother, Richard Jukich.
At her request, Marianne has been cremated and a celebration of her life will take place in the spring.
Memorial donations may be made in her name to the Sixth Grade Forestry Tour, c/o: Clearwater Extension Service, 2200 Michigan Ave., Box E, Orofino, ID 83544.

Cheryl Jane Armstrong, 63, formerly of Orofino
Cheryl Jane Armstrong, daughter of Jane and Lee Armstrong, died Nov. 30, 2008, at her home in Lewiston.
Cheryl was born Dec. 26, 1944 in Phoenix, AZ and graduated from high school in Page, AZ. She moved with her family to Orofino in 1966 and worked as a dispatcher for the Clearwater County Sheriff's Office. In the early '70s, Cheryl moved to Lewiston and began working as a legal secretary for Knowlton and Miles. After 36 years, she retired in 2007 as a legal assistant.
Cheryl was a member of the Rainbow Girls and later served as Mother Advisor for the Lewiston Rainbow Assembly. She was a Past Worthy Advisor in the Eastern Star and also served as a board member for the Lewiston YMCA. When her health permitted, she enjoyed attending church at Covenant House Christian Center in Orofino. She was devoted to her hobbies and graced many family's homes with her stained glass creations, oil paintings and her beautiful quilts. Cheryl enjoyed visiting with her quilting friends of the Seaport Quilter's Guild.
She was preceded in death by her father, Lee Armstrong, and brother, Benny Smith. She is survived by her mother, Jane Armstrong, Orofino; brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Marsha Armstrong, Chandler, AZ; sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Alan Hengen, Orofino; and numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews: Robin, Rick, Russell Rieck of Texas; Duncan Smith of Texas; Ken, Gail, Alan, Austin Hengen of Orofino; Dawn, Rick, Rachel, Eric Kelly of North Carolina; Marti, Blaine, Amanda, Andrea Bonner of Orofino; Lisa, Rob, Erin, Sean Benke of Tucson, AZ; and Travis Hengen of Boston; Les Linares of Boston; and Shelly Stacy, Austin, Trenton, Nathan, Kendal LaCombe of Colorado.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 6, at Covenant House Christian Center, 12517 Hartford Ave., Orofino. Service will begin at 2 p.m. with a dinner following at the church.

Ellen Kay Rains, 52
Ellen Kay Rains passed away peacefully, surrounded by family Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008, at Moscow. She was 52.
She was born Sept. 12, 1956, at Scotia, CA, to Frank and Marilyn Vierra of Arcata, CA.
Ellen graduated from Arcata High School in 1974. She married
Jack Rains Oct. 4, 1975. They were blessed with two children, Cameron and Amy.
She worked as a flagger for a telecommunications company, but was a beloved homemaker much of her life. She loved her family unconditionally. Her hobbies were camping, cooking, ceramics, lamp shades and quilting for her family.
Ellen was preceded in death by her father, Frank.
Surviving Ellen are her husband, Jack of Kendrick; son, Cameron Rains of Orofino; daughter, Amy Collins of Genesee; three grandchildren, Rylee Rains, Kaleb Collins and Brady Rains; mother, Marilyn Vierra of Arcata; brother, Larry Vierra of Spokane, WA; and sister, Sheila Hall of McKinleyville, CA.
As requested, there will be no service for her, only cherished memories.
Mary Elizabeth Green, 85
Mary Elizabeth Green passed away Friday, Nov. 21, 2008, at her daughter's home in St. Maries.
She was born to Anna L Culwell and Joseph C. Tobin, March, 29, 1923, at Lewiston. She attended school in Genesee.
She married
Stanley G. Green on Jan. 9, 1942. He passed away Nov. 2, 1987.
Mary and Stan farmed together east of Genesee. They moved to Moscow in 1975. She worked at the University of Idaho at Moscow and Washington State University at Pullman. She retired from WSU in 1983. She moved to Lewiston in 1988.
Mary was a lifelong member of the Catholic Church and was a member of the Catholic Daughters in Genesee. She was a past member of St. Mary's and St. Augustine's churches in Moscow, where she was very active. She became a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church at Lewiston in 1988. Mary enjoyed spending time with family and friends, Bible study, Women's Aglow and gardening.
Survivors include three daughters, Jackie and husband Don Kraut of Lewiston, Marsha and husband Ed Hudson of Orofino, and Lisa and husband Mark Lloyd of St. Maries; two sons, Stanley G. and wife Karen Green Jr., and Terry Green, all of Kamiah; 12 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband and a son, Richard.
Vigil service is at 7 p.m. Friday at Our Lady of Lourdes. The funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, followed by a graveside service at 2:30 p.m. at the Moscow City cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Benewah County or Holy Family Catholic School of Coeur d'Alene.
Luella O. Sifton, 99, Orofino
Luella O. Sifton passed away peacefully Saturday, Nov. 22, at the home of her daughter, Barbara Fitzsimmons. This concluded a three month decline of her health due to age.
Luella was born to Richard and Annie Schlupe Kenedy Sept. 25, 1909 at Vale, OR. Her father was a road supervisor that worked in the Steens Mountain area. She was the second child of four in the family. After the death of her father, her mother married
Kirby Nally and they had two sons.
She married
Forest Sifton in October of 1926. They lived in Emmett before moving to a ranch east of Weiser in 1937. They had two daughters, Luella Ann and Barbara. Due to the isolation of the ranch, they purchased a home in Weiser so the girls could attend school. During the school year, Luella sometimes worked at the box factory in Weiser. On weekends, they returned to the ranch to help Forest. In the spring, she returned to the ranch to help during lambing season and spring farming. During the summer, the whole family helped with harvesting and haying. As parents, they valued education and saw both of their daughters graduate from the University of Idaho.
The 1930 decade saw hard times and life on the farm was not easy. Hard work, minimal equipment and low prices of the farm production required dedicated people to survive. During World War II, they also operated two adjacent farms for Luella's brother and brother-in-law who were serving in the armed forces.
They eventually sold the ranch to their daughter, Luella Ann and son-in-law. During retirement, they spent winters in Arizona for some 30 years, returning to the Emmett area to help a long time friend, Barney McLinn on his fruit ranch.
Due to ill health, they moved to Orofino to be nearer their daughter, Barbara, in 1988. After 65 years as a devoted couple, Forest died in 1991. Luella remained at her Hidden Village home.
Luella was preceded in death by her husband, Forest; her daughter, Luella Ann Clelland; brother, John Kenedy (WWII); half brothers, Vern and Vince Nally; sister, Birdie Fitchett; and granddaughter, Kathy House.
Survivors include her sister, Ruby Ballard; daughter, Barbara Fitzsimmons and son-in-law, Norm; six grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; numerous great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at Orofino Riverside cemetery at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26, followed by a gathering of friends and family at the Orofino Methodist Church Fellowship Room. Pine Hills Funeral Chapel of Orofino is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed toward a favorite charity.
Leonard M. Cole, 77, OHS graduate
Leonard M. Cole passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2008, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston.
Leonard was born to Fred and Edna Cole on April 1, 1931, at Lenore. Most of his childhood years were spent on Sunnyside Bench and at Cavendish, where he helped with the family farm. He attended school at Sunnyside and later graduated from Orofino High School.
After graduation, he attended Eastern Washington College of Education at Cheney, as well as the North Idaho School of Education (now LCSC), where he studied industrial arts. He worked his way through college by helping his dad on the family farm and sometimes worked at the Farrington Mill. He also helped build the rural telephone line at Cavendish and Teakean.
On Valentine's Day in 1952, Leonard married
his lifelong sweetheart, Virginia Cuddy. Together, they raised two daughters, Debbie and Barbara, and made the Lewiston area their lifelong home. Leonard worked in the building trade for several years and later started and ran a successful garage door business, from which he retired.
He was an accomplished carpenter and woodworker. He built two family homes in Lewiston and filled the households of several grandchildren, daughters, nieces and nephews with special woodworking projects. He was always gracious to family and friends, generously helping with home remodeling and improvement projects. He also enjoyed many hours in his woodworking shop, where several special projects and gifts for others were crafted.
He enjoyed music, playing the guitar, banjo, mandolin and harmonica at family jam sessions. He also had a culinary expertise for barbecue that family and friends appreciated greatly. He also went on several fishing and pack trips to Hoodoo and Larken lakes with family and friends, and enjoyed taking his wife and kids on camping trips to Aquarius.
Leonard was great fun and had a sense of humor that all enjoyed. Practical jokes and pranks were one of his specialties and the coyness of his delivery was trademark. He was an active member of the local Elks, Eagles and Moose lodges, and enjoyed square dancing.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Edna Cole; and his sister, Margaret Isaacson.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Cole; daughters and spouses, Debbie and Ralph Freeze and Barbara Fry and Warren Volkman; grandchildren, Jason Freeze, Jon Freeze, Cori Fry Pearson and husband Brian, Faron Fry and husband Frank, Aleisha Autrey, Tiffany Carmouche and Adrienne Volkman; great-grandchildren, Jordan, Austin, Michelina, Jessica, Samantha, Kierston and Gracie; and numerous nieces and nephews, Steve, Brad, Jeff, Kevin, Karen Sue, Devon, Jackie, Carrie, Brenda, Peter, Bruce, Jayne and Stephen.

The family would like to thank the staff at Lewiston Rehab and Care Center, Tri-State Memorial Hospital and St. Joseph Regional Medical Center for their thoughtful, loving care that he received. It certainly made his life more pleasant during his illness.

Arlie Mary Cornell, 68, Orofino
Arlie Mary Cornell, 68, Orofino, passed away at Clearwater Valley Hospital in Orofino Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2008.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service is pending.

Oren Battles, 91, formerly of Weippe
Oren Battles, age 91, passed away Sunday, Nov. 9, 2008, at the Royal Plaza Care Center in Lewiston, from Parkinson's disease.
He was born June 22, 1917, at Gritman Hospital in Moscow. His parents were Jewel O. Battles and Mary Mawlam Battles of Weippe.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by his brother Kenneth. He is survived by his sisters, Elizabeth McKinney of Lewiston, Irene Skyles of Snohomish, WA, and M. Bernice Battles of Lewiston; his brother Charles Battles and wife Virginia of Lewiston; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Oren, being the eldest of six siblings, became responsible early on for helping with farm chores and helping with the logging and operating the shingle mill and saw mill. When he and his siblings became school age, he had the additional job of helping them get to the highway, three miles away, to catch the school bus to Weippe. This was not easy when the snow was three feet deep and they only had horses and sleighs to use. They did succeed however, and Oren graduated from Weippe High School in 1939.
Oren entered the Army June 16, 1941, and was sent to England Aug. 31, 1942. He was soon sent to North Africa, where he served with the 402nd Engineer Battalion. He served in the Algeria, French Morocco, Tunisia, Sicilian, Naples-Foggia and Rome-Arno campaigns before returning to the U.S. in April 1945. He was discharged June 20, 1945. He was rated an expert rifleman on the M-1 and the carbine, and he was awarded the Silver Star for his service in Italy.
Oren never married
, and after discharge from the Army he returned to the ranch in Weippe to focus on the lumber business. He built a new, more efficient mill and continued operating it until he became too ill from Parkinson's disease to continue. He did take time out to get his private pilot's license from the flight service in Clarkston, WA, and he attended the Lewiston Business College for a year.
Oren was the big brother everyone should have. He was a man of integrity: a loving, caring person who was always there when we needed help. He enjoyed the holidays with the family and enjoyed our time together. He treated his cattle like pets and hated taking them to the stock auctions and couldn't butcher them for food. He enjoyed the wild animals around the ranch and preferred to not hunt them.
Our family would like to thank the staff at the Royal Plaza Care center for their thoughtful, loving care that Oren received. It certainly made his life more pleasant while he was incapacitated.
A memorial service will be conducted in the spring to celebrate his time with us. The date and time will be announced later.
Sam Nello Rosetti, 80, formerly of Weippe
Sam Rosetti went home to the Lord on Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2008, with his daughter, grandsons and friends at his side.
Sam was born to Anton and Ercellia Rometti Rosetti on Jan. 8, 1928, in Iron River, MI. He was the youngest of four children and he worked on the family farm from a young age, working the horse teams for farming and logging.
Sam served in the Army in World War II, serving as a sergeant of the guard at the military hospital in Manila, Philippines. Sam married
Rosemary Borske in Iron River on July 19, 1947. Their son, Richard, was born Jan. 1, 1949, followed by their daughter, Susan, in April 1950. Sam worked in an iron ore mine in Iron River until the threat of black lung sent the family to Idaho in 1952.
They settled in Weippe, on Grasshopper Creek, until 1966, when he purchased several acres of land and established a small farm just outside Weippe. Sam and Rosemary moved to Lewiston in 1977 to be near their daughter and her family.
Upon arriving at Weippe, Sam started work in the woods with his brother-in-law, Forest Borske, and the Elinger Saw Mill. Sam became an expert woodsman, dozer operator and sawyer.
Sam also worked for the Clearwater Highway Department when not logging. Many a long night was spent keeping the roads plowed and sanded from Greer to Pierce. Sam also worked for the Forest Service, terracing the hillside on Cook Mountain, where Wild Sam's Campground was named for him.
Sam worked as the fire warden for Clearwater Timber Protection Association (now CPTPA) in the late 1960s out of Brown's Creek Lookout.
In the mid-'70s, Sam went to work for Operating Engineers as a dozer operator. Many stories were told about the hair-raising experiences on steep cliffs when the dirt disappeared from in front of the blade. A severe back, hip and leg injury forced his retirement in the early '80s.
A drive to the woods in the Weippe, Pierce and Headquarters area was like a trip down memory lane; with all the stories Sam told of the old days of logging, you could almost see the trains and hear the whistles.
Sam had a massive right-side stroke on Oct. 28, 2008, while driving his Ford on Grangemont Road at milepost 18. He lived at the Idaho State Veterans Home in Lewiston, where not only he, but also his family were cared for and loved.
Sam enjoyed hunting, fishing and riding his four-wheeler. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and was always there to support and help in any way he could.
Sam was preceded in death by his brother, Frank, in 1968; his son, Richard, in 1969; his beloved wife, Rosemary, in 1996; and his sisters, Dora Hoinowski, in 1999, and Ester Dzarnowski, in 2004.
He is survived by his daughter, Susan Hesler of Lewiston; granddaughter Stacey and Dale Dyer of Clarkston, WA; grandson, Kevin and Vicki Hesler of Lewiston; granddaughter Becky Hesler of Moscow; great-grandson, Cory Dyer of Clarkston; great-granddaughters, Roshell and Mandy Hesler of Lewiston; sister-in-law Caroline and Ed Adkins of White City, OR; sister-in-law Lillie Fritz of Chester, MT; brother-in-law Clarence and Opal Borske of Great Falls, MT; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and all of his dear friends.
A vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at St. James Catholic Church in Lewiston. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. James Church, with burial service in Weippe at 1:30 p.m.
