Robert C. Baker, 77, formerly of Orofino
Robert Charles Baker of Lewiston passed away Tuesday, Sept.8, 2008 at Deaconess Medical Center in Spokane, WA.
He was born Aug. 7, 1931 in Orofino to Charley Roy and Louise Sheridan Baker. He lived in Pierce until he was six year old and the family moved to Orofino where he attended all twelve grades in school.
After high school, Bob worked in several of the sawmills near Orofino until he entered the service. He served in the US Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Okinawa. When he left the service he settled in Clarkston, WA and worked at Little Goose Dam, Dunclick, Inc. and for C & T Tires. He then spent time in Alaska where he worked on Amchitka Island and on the oil pipeline. Later he returned to Idaho and worked at the Idaho Department of Transportation, where he retired in 1996.
On May 10, 1980, Bob married
Shirley Flockhart Scoles in Coeur d'Alene. Shirley passed away March 21, 2007.
He enjoyed fishing, camping, working in the garden and visiting with friends and family.
Bob is survived by his twin brother, Bruce and wife, Irene, of Cooper Landing, AK; his sister, Charlotte Moon, and husband, Rulon, of Clarkston; his stepchildren, Cindy McDaniel of Clarkston, Gerald Scoles and Randy Scoles of Lewiston. He is also survived by his step-grandchildren, Robert McDaniel, Cameron McDaniel, Kelsey McDaniel, Cody Scoles, Clay Scoles, Heather Scoles Shoemaker and Sarah Scoles.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Patricia Polillo and Emma Moon.
There was a viewing Friday, Sept. 12, at Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home. A funeral mass will be held Monday, Sept. 15, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with burial to follow at Normal Hill cemetery.
The family suggests that memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.
Gloria 'Lil' G' Uhling, 56, Orofino
A precious angel was sent to Mr. and Mrs. Alejandro Detablan on the 24th of Dec 1951.
Gloria was born and raised in the Philippines where she met Tim Edgar and they were eventually married
. During their marriage, they were richly blessed with three beautiful children, Dennis, Wayne, and Marciana, which were her world. Gloria and Tim later divorced.
She met Jerry Uhling in 1991 and she soon became the absolute love of his life and the couple was married
May 21, 1994 at the Hitching Post in Coeur d'Alene. The couple moved to Cottonwood in 2000 where they made their home until they recently moved to Orofino.
On Sept 4, 2008, the good Lord invited her back into his fold where she is now in the arms of her savior.
Gloria worked at St. Mary's Hospital as a food service worker. She loved working there and truly enjoyed the entire staff, especially her food service co-workers that brought such joy into her life as well.
Gloria loved to crochet, camp and fish, and do her nails. She also enjoyed a love/hate relationship with the "freckin Mariners".
She is survived by her husband, Jerry; and Gizmo, her Pekinese; her sons, Dennis and his wife Serena Edgar, Wayne and his wife Lisa Edgar, and her daughter, Marciana and her husband Zach Cooper; her loving sister, Norma Mann; six grandchildren, as well as countless friends.
Although small in stature, Lil G was big on heart and will leave a void with everyone that knew her that will never, ever be replaced, especially her family whom loved her so very, very much.
A rosary will be recited on Wednesday, Sept. 10 at 10:30 a.m., at Assumption Catholic Parish in Ferdinand with Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11. Burial will conclude the services at Ferdinand cemetery with a dinner to follow at the Ferdinand Hall. Viewing will be held on Tuesday, Sep. 9, from 1-8 p.m. at Uhlorn Funeral Home in Cottonwood.

Donald F. Sumpter, 85, formerly of Orofino
Donald F. Sumpter passed away Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008, at the Orchards Rehabilitation and Care Center in Lewiston, due to causes related to age.
He was born March 6, 1923, to Francis and Earl Sumpter in Craigmont. He graduated from Lewiston High School and then entered the U.S. Army, serving from 1945 to 1947.
He married
Rita M. Pratt on May 4, 1947.
He worked as an electrician for Potlatch Forests, Inc., for 43 years. He was a 60-year member of the Lewiston American Legion Post No. 13, and was a lifetime member of Lewiston Elks Lodge 896. Don was a very active member of the American Radio Relay League most of his life. His call signal was W7VOU (or Victor Ocean United).
In 1970 he moved to Orofino, where he became a member of the Orofino Odd Fellows Lodge No. 64. He belonged to the Orofino Boat Club and the Clearwater Valley Amateur Radio Club. He loved the outdoors, with hunting and fishing as his favorite hobbies.
He moved to Nezperce in 2001 to be closer to his daughter, Sharon Pratt and family. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Glen; and his wife, Rita.
He is survived by his daughters, Sharon and Bob Pratt of Nezperce and Janice Clark of Trona, CA; a brother, Richard Sumpter of Nowata, OK; granddaughters, Dee Dee and Troy Arnzen of Nezperce, Karen and Shane Lowe of Boise and Lisa and Jim Eagan of Roseburg, OR; and five great-grandchildren.
Memorial donations may be made to the Nezperce Ambulance Fund.
A graveside service will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Normal Hill cemetery in Lewiston. A covered-dish lunch will follow the service at Pioneer Park in Lewiston.
Melvin 'Mel' Delano Snyder, 75, former area resident
Melvin Delano Snyder, 75, died suddenly Aug. 15, 2008, at his home in Pendleton, OR.
"Mel" was born in Greer to Milton Cooper Snyder and Marie Pritchard Snyder, the second of two sons. In 1944 after his father's untimely death, the family moved to Lewiston where he graduated from Lewiston High School in 1951. He worked at Potlatch Lumber Mill until joining the army in 1953. After discharge in 1955, he focused on academics attending Linfield College, University of Idaho, Portland State and Brigham Young University. In between semesters he rode bulls and competed as a "bull dogger" at rodeos all over the northwest as a member of the Rodeo Cowboys Association.
In 1961, following his university studies, he joined General Electric and later Battelle Pacific Northwest Laboratories Institute as an engineer at the Department of Energy Hanford Site near Richland, WA. He co-authored numerous studies involving radioactive toxins; works that are still referenced in current research. In 1971 his passion for horses pushed him to quit all his engineering work and move to California where he trained horses at Los Alamitos Race Course for several years.
His roots in the Northwest brought him to Pendleton, OR in 1975. He met the love of his life that summer, Judy Ann LeGore, pursuing and winning her heart. They married
in 1976.
He spent the next 32 years of his life with his beloved Judy in Pendleton. He worked for SimTag in eastern Oregon as a field manager and later owned Frontier Transportation.
Mel loved horses, rodeo, hunting, and fishing. He never would miss any opportunity for a great story. His wife Judy Ann Snyder and older brother Milton Lee Snyder along with his great nephew Ozzie Clayton and in-laws Jack LeGore, Rick LeGore, Dave LeGore and Sherri Wier survive him. Others suffering his passing include nephews Brent Snyder, Craig Snyder, Mark Snyder and Matthew Snyder.
Larger than life, Mel Snyder's grin and gritty words along with his ability to make anyone laugh will be mourned by all.
Aloma Ball, 66, Lewiston
Aloma Ball, 66, of Lewiston, lost her brave battle with cancer and was called home to the Lord Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2008.
Aloma was born to Norman (Bud) Flatt and Rachel Piper Flatt on Sept. 22, 1941, in Nezperce.
She was married
to John E. Ball in March 1959 and they were later divorced.
She worked for the Lewiston Head-Start program helping with disabled children. She was also caregiver to many children in the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley.
The past few years, Aloma enjoyed helping the teens at Clarkston Missionary Baptist Church.
Aloma was very dedicated to her children and grandchildren, always there to help them out when they needed it.
She is survived by her children, John Ball of Kennewick, David Ball of Oklahoma, Liz and Dale Mann of Boyer Park, WA; Tom and Sharon Ball of Lewiston, Norman (Buck) Ball of Boyer Park, Shawn and John Weibert of Lewiston, and Tracy Ball of Laughlin, NV; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Aloma is also survived by her sisters, Mary and Larry Chambers, and Betty and Everett Crocker, all of Lewiston; and brothers, Norman (Butch) Flatt of Orofino, and Ed and Dani Flatt of Colfax.
Aloma was preceded in death by her parents; two infant daughters, Victoria and Valerie; and a brother, Jimmy Flatt.
She will be missed by many friends and family.
Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Mountain View Funeral Home, Seventh Street and Cedar Avenue, in the Lewiston Orchards.
Ruth Louise Nazworth, 87, Orofino
Ruth Louise Nazworth, 87, Orofino passed away at Clearwater Valley Hospital in Orofino Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008.
Cremation will take place. No services are planned at this time.

Betty Jane Fleming, 86, Orofino
Betty Jane Fleming, 86, Orofino, passed away Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008, at Clearwater Health and Rehabilitation in Orofino.
Burial has taken place. A private memorial service is to be held at a later date.

Avis Elizabeth Rivers Trott, 50, Elk River
Avis Elizabeth Rivers Trott passed away Sunday, Aug. 10, 2008. She was 50 years old.
Avis was born May 31, 1958, in Lewiston to Rebecca Ann Wood and John W. Rivers. She attended Elk River High School, graduating in 1976.
She married
Lloyd Trott Aug. 21, 1976. They made their home in Elk River.
Avis was a member of the Elk River Free Library and was instrumental in moving the library from the Elk River school to its current downtown location.
Avis was passionate about genealogy. She spent many hours researching her family history as well as that of her community. She also enjoyed crafts and crocheting. She and Lloyd loved to travel and they took their grandchildren, nieces and nephews on many vacations.
At the time of her death, Avis was the Elk River postmaster. She enjoyed her time serving the community.
Avis was preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by her husband, Lloyd, at their home; her stepchildren and their spouses, Rick and Francis Trott of Elk River, Laura Krueger of Moscow, Jesse Trott of Elk River, and Brian and Lisa Trott of Pomeroy, WA. She also leaves behind her sister, Cindy Garza of Herlong, CA, and her brother, John Rivers of Troy. Avis had 11 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, four nieces and one nephew, who will miss her greatly.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Elk River Community Bible Church.

Lee Forest Olin, 70, Orofino, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2008, at Clearwater Valley Hospital in Orofino.

DonLina Kessinger, 61, Orofino
DonLina Lund Kessinger, 61, of Orofino passed away Sunday, Aug. 3, 2008. Don Lina was born Nov. 20, 1946 to Thor and Utahna Lund of Rupert. DonLina grew up in the Rupert area and obtained a degree in cosmetology before marrying Jay Kessinger in the Idaho Falls Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1966. After Jay completed his Bachelor's Degree in 1968, they moved to Orofino where Jay was employed at State Hospital North. It was in Orofino that they continued to live and raise their family.
DonLina loved her family, her faith and the Orofino community and service to these were at the core of her life. DonLina was an active and supportive wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend and was constantly spending time with those she loved. DonLina was passaionate about her nine children and the many activities in which they participated. DonLina was an active member of the Orofino Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many capacities including Primary President; Young Women's President; and she taught Sunday School, Relief Society and Seminary. DonLina was also known for her crafting, gardening and her affinity for desserts and fine chocolates.
In more recent years, in addition to supporting her children, DonLIna's love and passion was directed toward her 25 grandchildren ranging from newborn to adult. After being diagnosed with cancer in 2006, in harmony with the rest of her life, she was motivated and lived for family events such as births, weddings and family gatherings. As she worked through trials associated with the disease, her family and grandchildren gave her strength and purpose.
DonLina is survived by her husband, Jay Kessinger of Orofino and nine children: Melanie Richardson of Lewiston; Donette Hope of Port Angeles, WA; Darcell Myers of Pullman, WA; Shannon Landrith of Milton, MA; Jason Kessinger of Orofno; Michael Kessinger of Lewiston; Randon Kessinger of Nampa; Stephen Kessinger of Las Vegas, NV; and Kimberly Domeny of Horseshoe Bend. She is also survived by 25 grandchildren with 2 more expected this year. She was preceded in death by her parents and is survived by four brothers and two sisters that include: Steve Lund of Twin Falls; William Lund of Salt Lake City, UT; Robert Lund of Burley; Cammie Braegger of Cedar City, UT: Mike Lund of Idaho Falls; Deanna Higgins of Burley. DonLIna's life will continue to inspire those who lived her.
A public viewing will be held Thursday, Aug. 7, from 6-7 p.m. at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel in Orofino. Funeral services are Friday at 10 a.m. at the Orofino Ward of the Church of Jesus of Latter-day Saints, 13610 Fremont Ave. in Orofino, with burial to follow at Riverside cemetery.
