Melvin Jospeh Snook, 103, Orofino
Melvin Joseph Snook died on Jan. 28, 2006 at his home in Orofino due to infirmities of age.
Snook was born in Wilson Creek, WA on May 24, 1902, the son of Eugene Clayton and Frances Caldonia Davis Snook. He moved with his family to Rathdrum in 1911 when his father joined his brother in a logging venture. The family again moved, this time to Spirit Lake in 1915 where Mel finished elementary school. Shortly after, when his father became ill, he went to work for Panhandle Lumber Co. and later as boilermaker's helper for the Milwaukee Railroad.
Mel met a schoolteacher, Agnes Redford, in 1926 at a Charleston dance in Spokane, WA. They married
and settled down in Spirit Lake. Four children were born of this union: Mary Lou, Frances Lee, Bill and Evelyn.
Mel joined his father and brother, Wayne, forming the E. C. Snook and Sons Logging Company, and settling in St. Maries (1937) and finally in Orofino, (1945) where Mel had been logging since 1941.
Always interested in service to his community, Mel first served on the Spirit Lake School Board. Upon moving the family to Orofino, Mel became active in local politics, serving on the city council. He also served two terms as State Senator from Clearwater County, and was chairman of the Republican Central Committee. In 1955, he was appointed Orofino Postmaster, a position he held until he retired in 1972.
Following retirement, Mel and Agnes were able to enjoy their home on Harmony Heights and do the things they loved best: fishing, visiting neighbors, spending time with grandchildren, (imparting wisdom to them all) and for Mel digging more ponds with his D-4 cat, ice skating, (cut short when he broke his hip out on the ice) and keeping up on Republican politics. Agnes developed poor health and they left their beautiful mountain, moving to Orofino in 1987.
He was a member of the Elks Lodge, Masonic Lodge, I.O.O.F., Lions Club, Kiwanis Club, Toastmasters and Orofino Celebrations. In 1947 he was instrumental in starting the logging part of the current fall event, celebrating the rich heritage of both his life and that of Clearwater County. He proposed that something be planned about the "lumberjack" to give a boost to the Clearwater County Fair. Mel felt that the logger's skills were being forgotten, especially the 'hand logger' and his tools, which had been replaced by automatic and modern equipment. The skills of chopping, bucking, taildown, and birling were becoming lost arts. Thus Orofino Celebrations, also know far and wide as 'Lumberjack Days' was born.
As a young boy in Spirit Lake, he was a member of the choir and youth group at the Presbyterian Church. Since living in Orofino he attended the United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his daughters, Mary Lou Dion and husband Joseph, Evelyn Olsen; son, Bill Snook and wife Bea; grandchildren, Christy Dion, J. J. Dion, Michael Dion and wife Pam, Steven Dion and wife Paula, Patti Freeman and husband Tom, Joseph Dion III and wife Jodie, Richard Brad Olsen and wife Joyce, Tammy Smith and husband Doug, Anola Bunting and husband Rick. Other survivors include 12 great-grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and his many friends. His parents; wife, Agnes; daughter, Francis Lee; grandson , Gene Snook; sisters, Bonnie Snook, Wilma Norell, Mildred Rodgers, Iva Snook, Lila Snook, Bernice Snook, Jean DeSart; and brother, Wayne Snook, preceded him in death.
The Memorial Service will be Thursday, Feb. 2 at 11 a.m. at Pine Hills Chapel in Orofino. Dolores Elliott, Pastor of the United Methodist Church, will officiate. The Kamiah Masonic Lodge will hold a burial service at the Riverside cemetery. A luncheon will follow at the Senior Citizens Center.

Miriam H. Coon, 87, Peck
Miriam H. Coon passed away Thursday, June 5, 2008 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston from pneumonia and other complications at the age of 87. She was born Sept. 18, 1920 in Lewiston to William and Clara (Johnson) Crawford.
She graduated from Peck High School in 1939 and has lived in the Peck area all of her life. She worked at Kayler's Tree Farm for 13 years before retiring in 1981. She has been a member of the Peck Community Women's Club and Methodist Church for many years. She married
Marion "Bud" Coon at Grangeville on Jan. 11, 1940. He died Oct. 24, 1987.
She is survived by her sons, Kenny Coon of Pierce and Larry Coon of Eugene, OR; daughter, Nancy Miller of Peck; grandsons, Cory Coon of Eugene, OR, Mike Miller and Shane Miller of Orofino; granddaughters, Jolene Lohman of Lewiston, Traci Kalamon of Spokane, WA, Cindy Beck and Amy Miller of Orofino and their spouses, 11 great grandchildren, 1 great great granddaughter, and 15 step grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Marion Coon; and brother, Burton Crawford.
"Mom" and "Grandma" will be loved and missed by everyone who knew her.
Visitation will be Wednesday, June 11, from 3-6 pm at Malcom's Brower-Wann Funeral Home in Lewiston. Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 12, at Malcom's Brower-Wann Funeral Home with burial to follow to Lewis Clark Memorial Gardens in Lewiston. A potluck dinner will follow by 5 p.m. at the Peck Community Hall. Anyone wishing to drop off food before may do so starting at 1 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Peck Library as Grandma was very passionate about her reading.
Lila Bradshaw Seegmiller, 83, formerly of Orofino
An elect lady, Lila Bradshaw Seegmiller, passed from this life on June 6, 2008 in Moscow.
Lila was born March 6, 1925 to Ellen Hortense and Hyrum Bradshaw in Hurricane, UT, where she lived her young life.
On March 17, 1944 she married
Paul Darrell Seegmiller in the St. George, Utah Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She devoted herself to her husband and her family, creating lovely homes in St. George, UT, Las Vegas, NV, Layton, UT, Orofino and Troy. She will be remembered for her quick wit, her organizational skills, her cooking, sewing, gardening, artistic talents and her love of God.
She is survived by her husband Paul, of 64 years, their eight children: Lynn (Dalene), Darrell (Bonnie), Scott (Eva), Annette (Mike) McClure, Bonnie (Greg) Banks, Dayne (Carolyn), Quentin (Nancy) and Polly (Warren) Jensen, their 36 grandchildren, 57 great grandchildren and her brothers, Floyd (Ada) and Lyndon (Emma) Bradshaw.
She was preceded in death by her sister Carol (Arden) Sampson and two grandsons: Michael Tod McClure and Jared Paul Seegmiller.
Her viewing will be held Thursday, June 12 at the Shorts Funeral Chapel at 1225 E. 6th St. in Moscow between the hours of 7- 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the L.D.S. Chapel at 715 Scott St., Troy on Friday, June 13, at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at the Burnt Ridge cemetery in Troy immediately following the services.

Terry L. Moore, 56, Weippe
On Tuesday, June 3, 2008, Terry L. Moore of Weippe passed away at his home.
Terry was born June 28th, 1951 in Boise, the eight child born to Verlon and Delorus Moore. Terry grew up in the Boise area and in 1976 moved to Weippe where he met and married
Carolyn Bailey. They had two children, Andy and Amanda. Terry also has a daughter, Julie, from a previous marriage.
Terry enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping and worked in the woods for several years.
Terry was preceded in death by his son Andy Moore in 1996, his parents Verlon and Delorus, two brothers and two sisters.
Terry is survived by Caroline, his wife of 28 years; daughter, Amanda Moore and Joe Downing, Lilli-Ana' Moore and Lane Joseph Downing, all of Weippe and by his daughter, Julie Rouston and husband Darin and their two children Benjamin and Molly of Parkdale OR. He is also survived by many brothers and sisters and extended family members.
Terry's services will be held Monday, June 9, at 11 a.m. at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel with the Reverend Don Blain officiating. Terry will be laid to rest next to his son Andy at Fraser cemetery near Weippe.

Douglas Earl Jones, 84, Orofino
On Monday June 2, 2008 Douglas Earl Jones passed away quietly in his home in Ahsahka.
Doug was born in Orofino on Oct. 14, 1923 to Earl and Hazel Jones. He was raised in Orofino and worked for Potlatch Timber Corporation, Kenny Miller and other local logging companies, along with working a brief time in Oregon and New Mexico. He also was an active member in the Marine Corps for nearly three years. He acted as an elder of the Seventh-day Adventist Church for many years and as a member of the Sheriff's Posse.
Doug married
Jean Agarus in November of 1942 and they had a daughter, Nancy Jones Ailor, and two sons, Dick Jones and Douglas Jones Jr. They later divorced and he remarried
Erma Jones in Coeur d'Alene in 1973 and he added three step children, Butch Hall, Tami Firzlaff and Teresa Duncan.
Doug was preceded in death by his mother and father; his sister, Twilla Olin, and a son Douglas E. Jones Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Erma Jones; his son, Richard Jones of Asotin, WA; and his daughter, Nancy Jones Ailor of Clarkston WA. He is also survived by his brothers Jim Jones of Orofino, Clayton Cross of Clarkston, Jack Cross of Davenport, WA, and Harmon Cross of Kentucky, as well as his two grandchildren, Dick Jones Jr. of Washington and Ann Jones of Boise.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday June 10, 2008 at 1 p.m. at the Seventh-day Adventist Church, located at 3414 U.S. Highway 12 towards Kamiah, with burial to follow at Riverside cemetery in Orofino.

Steven Frank Wolfe Sr., 54, Weippe
Steven Frank Wolfe Sr. passed away on May 31, 2008.
He was born Dec 27, 1953 to Stanley A. Wolfe and Marion Stewart Wolfe.
Steve lived in Pierce and Weippe. He attended Timberline High School. He joined the Army when he was 17. He received his GED and an Associates Degree. He made a career in the Army and retired in 1991 after 21 plus years in which he served in Viet Nam and The Persian Gulf.
He married
Chong Suk in 1975. They had three boys, Donnie Wayne, Steven Frank Jr. and Khristopher Lee Wolfe. The couple divorced in 2006.
Steven loved his family, he was very proud of his children and adored his grandchildren: four girls and two boys.
After retiring from the military, he lived in the Seattle area until 2005 and then moved "Home" to Weippe. He enjoyed his time with his childhood "Sweetheart" and companion, Chris Walsh.
Steven is preceded in death by his mother, Marion Stewart Wolfe, his father, Stanley A. Wolfe; an uncle that was very dear to him, Donald Stewart, a much older brother Stanley Eugene Wolfe, and a nephew, Larry Wolfe.
He is survived by his sons and their wives: Donnie and Palee of Kent WA, Steven and Lupee of Spokane, WA and Khristopher Lee and companion Crystal of Kent WA; a brother, Allen and his wife Mona Wolfe of Libby MT, two sisters: Wanda and her husband Mike Roby of Keuterville and Chris Wolfe-Anderson and Dale Anderson in Weippe.; two half sisters: Tina Hunter and Carrie Wolfe of Springfield OR; a half brother Randy Wolfe of Springfield OR and numerous nieces and nephews.
Steve had a great sense of humor and always could find the light of things. He loved his family and country dearly. He was very proud to be in the United States Army.
He was a wonderful father, husband, brother, uncle and friend. He will be missed by all.
Graveside Services will be held for Steven F. Wolfe Sr. Saturday, June 7, at 10:30 a.m. at Fraser cemetery. A potluck dinner will follow at the Fraser Grange Hall. Everyone is invited.

John Elgin Spencer, 89, Orofino, passed away quietly Monday, June 2, 2008 at Orchards Rehabilitation Care Center in Lewiston.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 21, at 10 a.m. at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel in Orofino with inurnment proceeding at the Weseman cemetery. A dinner will follow at the Senior Citizen Center in Orofino.

LaVerna May Haddon, 77
Laverna May Haddon, longtime resident of Lewiston, passed away Friday, May 30, 2008, after a courageous battle with lung cancer.
She was born Aug. 28, 1930, to Garrett and Mae Zumwalt Brooks in the small town of Kooskia. She was one of 17 children.
She married
Clinton K. Reed. The marriage later ended in divorce.
She married
Raymond A. Haddon on Dec. 15, 1962. At their home in the Lewiston Orchards, besides raising five children, they enjoyed raising chickens, rabbits, cats and Chihuahua dogs. She enjoyed gardening, playing in dart leagues and also trying to teach her children to play pool.
Laverna was a lifetime bartender in various establishments in Lewiston. She was a friend and second mother to everyone. She never knew a stranger and everybody was always a friend. Some would say she was very good at reading your mind or knowing what you wanted. She also was a longtime member of the Lewiston Eagles.
After retiring from tending bar in 2002, she enjoyed spending time in her yard and gardening, as well as spending time with her animals. She also enjoyed the many visits from her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends and family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Haddon; an infant daughter; and 14 siblings.
She is survived by two sisters, Bessie Coyle and husband Clarence of Clarkston, WA and Francis Smith and husband Ron of Medical Lake, WA; two daughters, Joyce Bell and husband Bruce of Hay, WA, Debbie Scharnhorst and husband Dan of Clarkston; three sons, Jerry Reed and wife Sharon of Clarkston, Robert Reed and wife Bobbie of Clarkston, and Raymond A. Haddon Jr. of Orofino; and 28 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren.
Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 3, at Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home, 920 21st Ave. in Lewiston, followed by a graveside service at Normal Hill cemetery in Lewiston.
Orval C. Schumaker, 95, Deary
Orval Colman Schumaker, 95, passed away Sunday, May 25, 2008 at Good Samaritan Village in Moscow where he had been a resident since March.
Orval, son of Tony and Mary Schumaker was born in Nezperce on May 13, 1913. He attended school in Russell until the seventh grade and then moved to Clarkston, WA where he graduated from high school on May 20, 1933.
He married
Esther Bershaw in 1933. The marriage ended in divorce in 1939.
He married
Teresa Berry on June 7, 1940 and they were married
for 51 years until her death in 1991. Shortly after Orval and Teresa were married
they moved to Uniontown, WA for several years where he spent two years as City Marshal of Uniontown. In 1946 he purchased a farm in Avon near Deary and farmed, raising cattle, horses, hay, and grain until selling the farm in 1971. During that time Orval was very active in the Deary farming community and was Highway Commissioner for over 15 years. He also was a past member of the Latah County Mounted Sheriff's Posse, and participated in Gentlemen on Horseback rides throughout the Northwest.
After retiring and selling the Avon farm in 1971, he and Teresa purchased a small farm of 40 acres in the Texas Ridge area outside of Deary. Orval continued to enjoy horse rides with back country camping and fishing well into his 80's. He had a keen memory and was happiest telling any listening ear some of his adventures. After Teresa passed away in 1991 Orval met Loretta Templeman and together they moved to Juliaetta living there for several years.
Although Orval never had any children, he and Teresa were especially close to Nadine (Molsee) Belieu, having met her while visiting friends at Elk River in 1968. They fondly called her their "daughter" for the last 40 years. As Nadine's children were born Orval and Teresa became "Grandpa and Grandma".
Orval is survived by his "Daughter" Nadine Belieu and husband Jim of Elk River, and four grandchildren, Ethan Molsee and wife Melissa of Tukwila, WA, Amon Molsee and wife Barbara of Elk River, Laban Molsee and wife Holly, of Post Falls, and Rachel Molsee of Coeur d' Alene. He is also survived by eight great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Teresa Schumaker, his close friend Loretta Templeman, and two grandchildren, Aaron Molsee and Sarah Molsee.
A graveside service will be held at 11 am Saturday, June 7, at the Pinecrest cemetery in Deary. Friends are welcome to join the family at this time. Memorials may be made to the Deary Fire & Ambulance Department.
