Elmer Ray Nielsen
Elmer Ray Nielsen, 89, of Eagle, passed away Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, at his home of natural causes. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 23, at the Eagle LDS Stake Center on North Eagle Road. Bishop Robert G. Southworth will preside. Burial will follow services at Dry Creek Cemetery. A viewing will be held this evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Eagle Stake Center. Services are under the direction of Riverside Funeral Home. Elmer was born Oct. 20, 1913, to Otto and Catherin Nielsen, in Pleasant Grove, Utah. He spent his youth working and playing in his parents' orchards and farmlands. In 1931 he graduated from American Fork High School. Following graduation he moved to the Salt Lake area and began working for the Utah Copper Smelter. Here he met his sweetheart Eva Orton, whom he married on Dec. 30, 1935, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. During his marriage to Eva he was the manager of the John Deere headquarters in Salt Lake. Later the couple moved to the Burley, Idaho, area. They bought and ran a farm and dairy. After the death of Eva in 1958, Elmer served an LDS mission in Wisconsin where he learned to love the Indian people. After returning from his mission, he moved to Idaho Falls where he met, and married Vera Keller on July 3, 1965. He then returned to school and completed a degree in electronics and worked the director of audio-visual aids for the Idaho Falls School District until his retirement. As a young man, he spent many enjoyable days hunting and fishing with friends and family. Later in life, he became an expert gardener and enjoyed sharing his abundant produce with friends and neighbors. Elmer found great fulfillment in dedicated service to his fellow man through the many positions he held in the LDS church including branch president and temple officiator. Elmer was a hard-working, dedicated husband and father who loved life. He made friends wherever he was, and was kind and generous to all that knew him. His life motto was to always be humble and teachable and to serve those around him. Elmer will be deeply missed by all those who knew him. Elmer is survived by his daughters, Evaleen (Gale) Hogg, Lynda (Steve) Floyd; his son, N. Kay (Annette) Nielsen; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; six nieces; one nephew; and many other relatives and friends. His parents, his siblings, and both his wives preceded him in death.
Velma L. Young
Velma L. Young of Appleton, Wis., age 89, died Monday evening, October 14, 2002, at Franciscan Care & Rehabilitation Center. She was born in La Harpe, Kansas on November 23, 1912, to the late Fred and Jane Daniels of La Harpe, Kansas. She was educated in La Harpe schools and graduated high school in May 1930. Velma received the Lord at age nine. She loved the Lord and His Word. She took numerous Bible studies and correspondence courses, helped in DVBS, and taught Child Evangelism and Sunday school classes. Velma married Elmer Marion Young on January 25, 1933, at La Harpe. A daughter, Vada Jane Young, was born to them September 24, 1936, in Iola, Kansas. They moved to Idaho in January 1939, living in various places over the years. Vada died in July 1982, and her husband, Gerald Edmund Anderson, died in September 2002. Elmer died May 22, 1991. Velma moved to Appleton, Wisconsin in September 1995, to be near her grandchildren. Velma is survived by a sister: Helen (the late Elroy) Darr; one sister-in-law, Audrey Daniels: two grandchildren, David Paul (Cindy) Anderson and Sandra Lynn (Joseph) Goodfellow; a great-grandchild, Timothy Joseph Goodfellow; three step great-grandchildren, Victoria Wollangk, Aaron Stang, and Jessica Stang, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers: Albert (Mae) Daniels and Kenneth Daniels and one sister Hazel (Harold) Remsberg. A graveside funeral service was held for Velma on Saturday, October 19th, 2002, at 11:00 a.m. at Morris Hill Cemetery in Boise, Idaho. Ruth Elaine Cook
Ruth Elaine Cook, age 76, of New Plymouth, died Monday, October 21, 2002, at St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise. Graveside services will be held 2:00 p.m., Thursday, October 24, 2002, at Park View Cemetery, New Plymouth. Pastor Rod Tegethoff will officiate. Friends may call from 5 - 8 p.m., Wednesday, October 23, 2002, and 10:00 a.m. to noon, Thursday, October 24, 2002, at Shaffer-Jensen Memory Chapel, New Plymouth. Ruth was born November 11, 1925, to Burt and Pauline Traefald in Iowa. She attended schools and graduated from high school in Minnesota. Ruth moved to Redmond, Oregon in 1950, and lived in Central Oregon until she moved to Cascade, Idaho in 1995. Ruth and Kenneth B. Cook were married November 27, 1997, in Cascade. They then moved to New Plymouth, Idaho in July of 1999. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, making crafts and loved working in her flower garden. Ruth belonged to the Senior Citizens in Cascade. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth B. Cook of New Plymouth, Idaho; one son, Donald L. Haughton of Gresham, Ore.; two daughters, Judy Haughton of Terrebonne, Ore.; Janice West and her husband, Doug of The Dalles, Ore.; one step-son, Greg Cook and his wife, Jessica of American Fork, Utah; and two grandchildren, Troy and Daniel West of The Dalles, Ore.. Hilda Clare Woods
Hilda Clare Woods, 85, died peacefully in her sleep, October 19, 2002, at a local care facility with her family gathered near. The 4th of 5 children, Hilda was born October 9, 1917, at Midvale, Idaho to Henry Clare and May Jackson Clare. She graduated from Midvale High School in 1936, and from Boise Business University in 1939. She married Jack B. Woods on January 23, 1940. Hilda's life was centered around her family. While raising her three sons, she was active in the PAT, scouts, and their school she was never happier than when she was surrounded by family and friends, especially at their cabin in Placerville. Hilda was a gracious hostess and had a wonderful sense of humor. She loved dancing, playing cards, and snowmobiling. She was an active member of The Order of Eastern Star. Hilda was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings Robert, Marguerite, and Ronald. She is survived by Jack Woods, her husband of 62 years, her sons Clare (Rose) Woods, Roger (Joyce) Woods, Gary (Gayle) Woods and grandchildren Lorie Woods, Jack Woods, Stephanie (Steve) Legeman, Douglas (Christina) Woods, her sister Virginia Beal, and 2 great-grandchildren. The Woods family wishes to thank the staff of the Valley View Care Center for their gracious care. A service celebrating her life will be held at Hillview United Methodist Church, 8525 Ustick Rd., Boise, on Friday, October 25, at 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to The Women' and Children's Alliance or to your favorite charity. Ruth Hardy Gleason
Ruth Hardy Gleason, 80, of Boise passed away Friday, December 27, 2002, at her home after a year-long battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, January 3, 2003, at the L.D.S. Church, 3229 Bogus Basin Road. Bishop Del Ririe of the 2nd Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints will officiate. Ruth was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on June 27, 1922, to Frank Watts and Hazel Stringham Hardy. She was raised and attended school, along with her two brothers, in Heber City, Utah. On June 29, 1940, she married Harold (Hadie) Lewis Gleason. They began their life together in Park City, Utah, and then moved to Salt Lake City where their oldest son was born. During WWII Ruth and their new son accompanied Hadie to Spokane, Washington, and then to Riverside, California. After the service they established their home in Heber City and lived there for several years. It was there that two more sons and a daughter joined the family. In 1954 the family moved to Boise, Idaho, where soon after a fifth child, another son (and Mom's favorite), joined the family. Ruth was a life-long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served in many church callings, many of which involved her musical talent on the organ. She was an active member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers where she also served in many positions. The last position she held, teaching the lesson, was her favorite because the teacher always learns the most. She enjoyed canning, making candy, reading, and making sure her family had plenty of love quilts to wrap up in. Ruth is survived by her children Lane, Roger (Laura), Douglas, Elizabeth "Buff" (Gregory), all of Boise, and Stephen (Connie) of Richmond, Virginia, 16 grandchildren, and 14+ great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, both brothers, a daughter-in-law, and her dear husband, Hadie. Friends may call to visit with the family on Thursday, January 2, 2003, from 6-8 p.m. at Relyea Funeral Chapel, and from 10-10:45 a.m. at the Church on Friday before the services. Interment will follow at Dry Creek Cemetery.
Paul Cloe Cooper
Paul Cloe Cooper, 83, of Boise, died Friday, Feb. 21, 2003, at a Boise care center. Paul was born Dec. 22, 1919, in Hiwasse, Ark., to Christopher Columbus and George Annis Cooper. He was inducted into the Army on Dec. 1, 1941, and served for more than three years. He was awarded battle stars for the Tunisian, Napels-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Northern Appennines, Po Valley, and Algerian-French Morocco campaigns. He married Barbara Ann James July 2, 1949, in Reno Nev. In 1959, he moved to Sweet Home, Ore., to work in a plywood mill. Shortly after, he moved to Lebanon, Ore., and worked at a plywood mill that, at the time, was the largest plywood plant in the nation. He retired to Ontario, Ore., in 1980 and enjoyed fishing, hunting, and woodworking for many years after that. ln 1999, he moved to a care center in Boise. He enjoyed many outdoor activities, including camping, hunting, and fishing, and was an avid woodworker. Everyone also remembers how much he enjoyed watching professional wrestling. Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Bryan and Lori of Boise; granddaughters, Jennifer and Christine of Boise; sister, Velma; brother, Vernon (Jack); and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by wife, Barbara; brothers, Clyde, Claude, Elmo, and Conley (Bill); and sister, Cleo. At his request, no services will be held. Memorials are suggested in his name to the World War Il Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 96074, Washington, D.C. 20090-6074. The family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff at Ashley Manor for the wonderful care given to Paul. Arrangements are by Aclesa Cremation and Burial, Boise.
Pauline Shirk Keim
Pauline Shirk Keim, 100, of Nampa, died Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center. Memorial services to celebrate Pauline's life will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, at the Nampa Church of the Brethren, 11030 Orchard Ave. and Middleton Road corner. Pastor Jim Hardenbrook, will officiate. Cremation will take place prior to the services. Friends and family may call Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Alsip & Persons Funeral Chapel, Nampa. Pauline was born May 25, 1902, in Lost Springs, Kan., the eldest child and daughter of Dr. Frank and Zuletta Jane Shirk. She started school in Kansas, but moved with her parents, two sisters and two brothers, to California, when she was about 10 years old. They finally settled in LaVerne. Her father practiced medicine there for about 50 years. Pauline attended grammar school, academy, and two years of college in LaVerne. Her junior year "Polly" went to McPherson College in Kansas, where she met Stanley Keim, from Nampa, Idaho. After one year, Pauline returned to California, where she graduated from LaVerne College, and Stan graduated from McPherson, but a great love had developed. Pauline taught school for one year in Long Beach and Stanley was learning the retail meat business in Nampa with his father and three brothers. They were married June 24, 1926, a union which lasted 51 years. The newlyweds moved to Nampa, where they were active in both civic and church activities. The couple belonged to the Nampa Church of the Brethren, and the Lions Club. Pauline was a worker in the YWCA, and scouting. In her later years, she enjoyed the activities of the local chrysanthemum club, as she was always a flower lover. At age 80, she joined PEO, Chapter BY. Stan and Polly traveled all over the world during their years together. They had four children, born between 1927 and 1936. This created a legacy of four grandsons, seven granddaughters, and 18 great-grandchildren, 10 boys and eight girls who loved their "Grammie Who Who" a great deal. Polly always took great pleasure in attending family dinners and gatherings. She lighted up the room with her smile, when someone came to visit and she was the "perpetual hostess," always trying to make her guests comfortable and welcome. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley; her parents; two sisters; and two brothers. She is survived by two sons and two daughters, Don (Ann) Keim of Modesto, Calif., Ken (Priscilla) Keim of Goodyear, Ariz., Miriam (Ellis) Albright of Nampa, Anne (Bob) DeBord of Payette; a sister-in-law, Icel Keim, 104 years, of Shoreline, Wash.; 11 grandchildren, Beverly (Tony) Tomao, Patty (Gil) Sierra, David (Mary) Keim; Susan Dugger, Jane (Tom) Baxter, Scott (Kelli) Albright, and Kay (Kirk) Harwood; Mike (Alice) Kinnear, Amy (Theron) DeRosier, Delphine (Joe) Keim-Campbell; Christopher DeBord, Eric (Fafa) DeBord; also many nieces and nephews, who were very dear to her. The family wishes to thank the staff and caregivers at The Clearwater House for their loving care and the last five and one-half years; and to the Mercy Medical medical team. Phyllis Larraine Myers
Phyllis Larraine Myers, 71, of Nampa, passed away Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003, at home of natural causes. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26, at Alsip & Persons Funeral Chapel, Nampa. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Caldwell. Phyllis was born June 15, 1931, in Keokuk, Iowa, to Harold and Helen (Scofield) Thon. She moved from Iowa to Nampa, Idaho, when she was 13 years old, and graduated from Nampa High School. On June 6, 1950, Phyllis married Bob Myers at Nampa First Church of the Nazarene. She dedicated her life to her family and husband, enjoyed holidays, camping, country music, dancing, and traveling to the Oregon coast. Phyllis had a vibrant personality that had no bounds and she was a stranger to no one. She is survived by her children, Scott (Sherrel) Myers of Nampa, Cindy (Dennis) Watson of Caldwell, Roxie Bedient of Caldwell, and Brenda (Ben) Miller of Boise; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; stepmother, Irene Thon; brothers, Joe (Ann) Thon and Marvin (Keiko) Thon, both of Stafford Springs, Conn.; also her lifelong friend, Marge Nichol. Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, the Rev. Harold Thon of the Nazarene church and Helen (Scofield) Thon; and sister, Margaret Elaine Thon. Cheryl Ann Hanlon
Cheryl Ann Hanlon, 43, of Boise, was tragically taken from us Saturday, March 1, 2003. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 8, at Sunset Hills Memorial Park, 1575 145th Place, Bellevue, Wash. Cheryl was born March 23, 1959, in the Seattle, Wash., area. Her parents are Joyce and Garry Hanlon of Elk Bend, Idaho. She lived her years in Washington, California and Idaho. In her short 43 years Cheryl lived a full life with many interests. She was an avid gardener, loved growing all kinds of vegetables and plants; always growing plenty for her friends to feast upon or just to enjoy their beauty. Cheryl loved the outdoors, always looking forward to camping. She had a special way about her when it came to spoiling her friend's children or their grandchildren, they loved her, and to them she was "Aunt Cheryl." She was always putting others before herself, always the helping hand, whether you be in need or just needing a soothing touch when you were ill. If you were her friend, you were family. Her free spirit and arms-wide-open smile will be missed by all whose life she touched. Cheryl leaves behind her loving soulmate of 16 years, Jeff Carlson; her daughter, Erin and grandson, Isaiah of California; her parents, Joyce and Garry Hanlon of Elk Bend, Idaho; two brothers, Phil and Walter, one sister, Ranae, all of the Seattle area; and many friends here in Boise. Cheryl was preceded in death her brother, David. Frank Manning McCambridge
Frank Manning McCambridge, 89, of Ontario, Ore., died Wednesday, March 4, 2003, at the Meadowbrook Retirement Center. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 8, at the Ontario Lienkaemper Chapel, with Pastor Ernie Hodge officiating. Private burial will be at later date at Dell Cemetery, Jamieson, Ore. Services are under the direction of the Ontario Lienkaemper Chapel. Frank was born July 19, 1913 (10 minutes after his twin brother Charlie), in Jamieson, Ore., to Charles Gibson (C.G.) McCambridge and Martha Goode (Mattie) Lockett-McCambridge. Frank came from solid pioneer stock. The most notable was his grandfather, Robert Addison Lockett. Uncle Bobby, as he was affectionately known, was one of the most influential personalities of eastern Oregon. He was elected twice to the Oregon State Legislature as representative for Baker County. During the session of 1887 he, with the help of Sen. George Chandler and Rep. I.H. Holland, secured the act creating Malheur County. He was also instrumental in establishing its first officers. Frank attended White Settlement School. While in school, Frank's father became gravely ill with a heart condition, so he took the seventh and eighth grade together in order to take over the responsibilities of providing for the family. His father died shortly thereafter and Frank, at age 15, became the family's main support. He worked hard and eventually succeeded in putting his sister and a brother through high school. He served in the U.S. Army, 154th Engineer Combat Battalion, during World War II and was stationed in the South Pacific. Following the war Frank was employed by Roger's Construction Co. as a heavy equipment operator building highways in the Pacific Northwest. His employment brought him to Burns, Ore., where he met, and later married Mae E. (Betty) Robinson on Jan. 22, 1947 in Winnemucca, Nev. Frank and Betty continued to travel extensively for Roger's, moving several times to various road construction projects. In conjunction with working for Roger's, he owned and operated a lumber hauling business in Prineville, Ore.; a logging business in Tempe, Ariz.; and the Shell service station in Vale, Ore. In 1965 Frank finally secured work with the BLM and he and Betty settled permanently in Vale. The couple moved to a small acreage in Ontario in 1978 and Frank retired from the BLM in 1979. The couple contented themselves with gardening, raising sheep, being with their family and fishing until Betty passed away in 1992. Frank especially enjoyed deer and elk hunting with John and Marti Smit of Vale and their family. In 1993 Frank became reacquainted with his longtime friend, Juanita Hoff. The two became best friends and constant companions for the next 10 years. They enjoyed traveling, fishing, spending time with friends and family and dancing at Ontario's Senior Center and the Elks Club. Frank loved to dance and was a graceful and accomplished ballroom dancer. Frank was a member of the Vale United Methodist Church, Ontario Senior Center, and the Elks. Frank is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Lorraine and Tony Hendrickson of New Plymouth, Idaho; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis and Vicki McCambridge of Eagle, Idaho, and Lynn and Ann McCambridge of Waitsburg, Wash.; special daughter-in-law, Paddy McCambridge of New Plymouth; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty; sister, Marion; three brothers, Bob, Charlie and Tommy; and grandson, Bill Hollopeter. For those who knew and loved him, Frank was a stoic, intelligent, honest, proud, hard-working and outspoken man who possessed a tremendous inner strength and dry sense of humor. He may best be described by the words on his BLM retirement plaque, which read: "He growls like a Grizzly. He grumbles like a Tank. But his heart's as big as Texas, That's our cranky Frank." Mary Elizabeth LaFranier
Mary Elizabeth LaFranier went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at 70 years of age. Viewing will be this evening, Friday, March 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Cloverdale Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 8, at the Cloverdale Funeral Home. Cremation will follow. Arrangements are under the direction of Cloverdale Funeral Home. Mary was raised in Payette, Idaho, where her family moved from Nebraska. Mary was born May 1, 1932, to Ralph and Permelia Morgan. Mary was preceded in death by her father, Ralph Morgan; sisters, Nancy and Joyce; brothers, Sydney, Howard and Doug; and great-grandson, Devon. Survivors include her daughters, Linda Sickles and husband, Garth, Phyllis Coffell and husband, Edward; sons, George Hopkins, John Wesley LaFranier, John Wayne LaFranier and wife, Liz; 18 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; mother; sisters; brothers; nieces and nephews. You have touched our lives and will be greatly missed.
