LeRoy M. Ulrich
LeRoy M. Ulrich, 75, of Nampa, passed away in a Boise hospital on Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 21, at Alsip & Persons Funeral Chapel, Nampa. Pastor Donn Mogford of Berean Baptist Church in Nampa will officiate. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Caldwell. Friends may call today, Saturday, from 1 to 5 p.m. at Alsip & Persons Funeral Chapel. The family will greet friends Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the funeral chapel. LeRoy M. Ulrich was born Nov. 17, 1926, in Caldwell, the son of Amos and Sallie (Mitchell) Ulrich. He and his family moved to the family farm south of Nampa when he was two weeks old. At the time of his passing he and Ramona have their home on a small portion of the farm. He attended Southside Boulevard School, Central Junior High and Nampa High School. He married Martena Martin on Feb. 1, 1946, in Nampa, and they made their home on the family farm south of Nampa. She preceded him in death on Aug. 23, 1979. He worked at Amalgamated Sugar Co. for 18 years. He married Ramona Olson on March 31, 1980, in Boise, and they have made their home in Nampa. LeRoy and Ramona enjoyed traveling to Arizona. His favorite vacation spot was the Oregon coast. He also enjoyed traveling in his RV, watching NASCAR races, and motorcycling. He had a general license as a ham radio operator. LeRoy loved people and visiting the shut-ins; and he loved animals, especially beagle dogs. He enjoyed listening to Old Time Fiddlers music. LeRoy was a gentle man and dearly loved by all of his family. He will be greatly missed. LeRoy believed in going the extra mile to help others in need. He was a fantastic mechanic and he never met a machine that he couldn't repair with his mechanical ability. As a child he had an adventurous time. He always had a sense of humor, even until his last days in the hospital. LeRoy received the Lord Jesus as his Savior as a young child and was a charter member of Berean Baptist Church, Nampa. He is survived by his wife, Ramona Ulrich of Nampa; his daughter and son-in-law, Rosalie and Alex Zarybnicky of Boise; his son and daughter-in-law, Ken L. and Cecilie Ulrich of Nampa; stepsons, Steve and his wife, Charlene Olson, and David and his wife, Debbie Olson, all of Boise; stepdaughter, Marlene and her husband, Glenn Toothaker of Boise; his sister, Elsie Marie Richter of Nampa; grandchildren, Christy Gilliam, Von Wellington and Timothy Zarybnicky; stepgrandchildren, Tyler, Kaycee, Derek, Michael Olson and April Hoff; great-grandchildren, Stephen, Kesey, Timothy, Nakeata, Syaira, Logan, and one to arrive soon; and a nephew, Glenn Richter and family of Nampa. Also preceding him in death were his parents; a brother, Donald; and a brother-in-law, Ed Richter. Clarissa E. Shields
Clarissa E. Shields, 92, of Boise, died Saturday, October 19, 2002, at a Boise care center. Graveside inurnment services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, October 24, 2002, at Cloverdale Memorial Park with Bishop Corry Perkins offi-ciating. Arrangements are under the direction of Cloverdale Funeral Home, Boise. Clarissa was born on October 19, 1910, in American Falls, Idaho to Alma and Pearl (Stewart) Wood. Her family dry-farmed at Rockland, Idaho where she grew up. She married Eugene Gardner and they moved to California and three children were born to them; LaNore, Robert and Leonard. She and Eugene later divorced and she returned to Idaho where she married Donald Shields and they lived in Meridian until his death in 1994. She worked at JC Penneys as a clerk and ran the restaurant at the Bradley airfield. She was a longtime league bowler in Meridian where she had many friends. She enjoyed camping, traveling, sewing, crochet, cooking for big family dinners and especially her gardening, yard work and tending her roses and flowers. Clarissa is survived by her daughter LaNore P. Johnson of Meridian, a son Leonard Shields of California, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Donald Shield and a son Robert Shield and numerous brothers and sisters.
Rodney W. Frost
Rodney W. Frost, 81, of Meridian, died Monday, December 30, 2002, of natural causes. Viewing will be held Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Cloverdale Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, January 3rd, at the Cloverdale Funeral Home, with Pastor Ray James officiating. Interment will follow at Cloverdale Cemetery with military honors. Rod was born in Boise at St. Lukes Hospital on May 26, 1921. He was the third of three boys born to Elmer and Mamie Frost, longtime Idaho farmers. He lived most of his adult life in the Meridian area. His parents homesteaded in Pearl, Idaho where he and his brothers attended school in a one-room schoolhouse. He graduated from Meridian High School in 1939; served as student body president his senior year and he played tennis and basketball during his high school career. After graduating from high school he attended the University of Idaho until he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. and served during World War II, mostly in the South Pacific. While in the Marine Corp. he married his first wife, Sue Davis. From that union he had two daughters. He and Sue owned and operated Boise TV and Radio Repair from 1956 until 1964. For more than 20 years Rod made his living in the electronic field, including three years teaching Consumer Electronics at BSU. His wife, Sue passed away in December 1971. On Christmas Eve, 1976, Rod married Donna Wheeler. This union extended his family to include another daughter and a son. As quoted by both, "These last 26 years have been enjoyed as each others best friend." Their unselfishness and willingness to help others, including any stray animals that needed a home, exemplified their love of God. Rod was ordained as a minister in 1978 and he and Donna served several years at the Cherry Tree Chapel in Meridian. Rod is survived by his loving wife and friend Donna, his brother Bill of Star, daughters, Patty Herman and her husband, Russell of Melba, Michele Russell and her husband, Rusty of Fallon, Nevada, and Rebecca Martin and her husband John of San Diego, son Norris Wheeler and wife Rosie of Meridian; 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren. Patricia Ann Slade
Patricia Ann Slade, 54, of Boise, ended her 2 year battle with Scleroderma on December 30, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, January 2, 2003 at the Meridian East Stake Center, 11443 McMillan Rd., Boise with Bishop Brian Zarkou officiating. The family will greet friends from 9:30 a.m. 10:15 a.m. at the church before the service. Burial will follow at Terrace Lawn Memorial Gardens, Boise. Arrangements are under the direction of Cloverdale Funeral Home. Patricia was born February 25, 1948 in Caldwell, Idaho. She graduated from Boise High School in 1966. Patricia married her devoted husband of 35 years, Clarence Claude Slade on July 16, 1967. She was a friend to many. The family cabin in Cascade was always open to friends, family and fun. She loved to entertain. Patricia was a caring loving mother and loving daughter. Her grandchildren, Ashley, Kylie and Taylor were the light of her life. Patricia loved square dancing, snowmobiling, 4 wheeling and car shows. Her turquoise Mustang was one of her favorite pastimes. One of Patricia's greatest qualities was that she never betrayed the confidence of a friend. She was honorably employed for the Meridian School District Transportation Department for 8 years. Patricia will be missed by many. She is survived by her husband, Clarence, of Boise, her mother, Helen, of Boise, daughter Susan, of Boise, son Christopher, of Boise, brothers Jerry VanHorn, of Eagle, Rick Hempsmyer, of Boise, and in-laws Dick and Lillian Slade, of Meridian. She was preceded in death by her father, Clyde, a brother, Larry, and stepmother Jenice.
Luella F. Olsen
Luella F. Olsen, 91, of Boise, died on Monday, December 30, 2002 at Hillcrest care center of natural causes. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 3, 2003 in the Syringa Section of Dry Creek Cemetery. Luella was born on December 30, 1911, in Seibert, Colorado, the daughter of Edward F. Woods and Opal Read Woods. She married Harvey C. Olsen in Cheyenne, Wyoming on February 1, 1929. They moved to Eagle, Idaho in 1930 and lived in several locations afterwards. They included Fort Collins, Colorado and Cheyenne, Wyoming, where she gave birth to their only son, Harvey G. Olsen. In 1938 they settled in Boise and remained there until the time of her death. Luella loved to play the piano and gave lessons in the 1940's. She also enjoyed planting flowers and gardening. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Survivors include a son, Harvey (Dorothy) Olsen of Kuna; granddaughter, Susan of Kuna; and three great grandchildren, Tyler of Reno, Nev., Brock of Kuna, and Samantha of Casper, Wyoming. Many thanks to the wonderful staff at the Hillcrest Care Center for all their help and care. We appreciate all the effort.
Irene Simpson Kruckenberg
Irene Simpson Kruckenberg, 88, of Kuna, died Monday, December 30, 2002, at a Boise Hospital. Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 3, 2003 at Cloverdale Funeral Home, Boise. Arrangements are under the direction of Cloverdale Funeral Home. Irene was born February 5, 1914 at Beloit Kansas to John and Myrel Smith. She graduated from Beloit High School in 1934. She taught school in Kansas. On May 8, 1935 she married Andrew Simpson. To this union, 2 sons were born, John and James. They farmed in Kansas before moving to Idaho in 1936. Andrew died December 26, 1983. Irene married Art Kruckenberg on July 20, 1985. They enjoyed traveling and working with their garden and flowers. Art died December 5, 1995. Irene was and active member of the Methodist Church, serving on committees. Surviving are two sons, John Simpson of Hawaii and Jim (Mary) Simpson of Kuna. Preceding her in death were her parents, and a sister, Lazell Smith. Memorials can be made to the Kuna Methodist Church, 4th and Franklin, Kuna, Idaho.
Virginia K. Williams (Gigi)
Virginia K. Williams (Gigi) passed away at a local care center Friday, Dec. 20, 2002. She was born Jan. 5, 1917, in Marian County, Ind. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 23, at Morris Hill Cemetery, conducted by the Bahi Faith of Boise. Virginia was born Jan. 5, 1917, to Leslie C. Williams and Minnie D. Williams, in Marian County, Ind. Virginia moved to Idaho in 1945 with her family. She worked as a seamstress and housekeeper for many years and retired from Carroll's clothing store in 1975. Survivors include her sister, Barbara Rose of Boise; and brother, Edward Williams (Lou) of Boise. Other survivors include numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom were like her own children. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Tom and Jack Williams. Gigi accepted and only saw the good in everyone she met. Kindness, caring, and generosity were her outstanding traits. Her sweet spirit will be greatly missed by all who knew her. "May the road rise up to meet you, may the wind be always at your back, may the sun shine warm upon your face, the rains fall soft upon your fields, and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand."
Milford Blair Shepherd
Milford Blair Shepherd, 75, of Sunnyvale, Calif., formerly of Boise, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at home after a short, courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services will he held at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 23, at the Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel, Boise, with Pastor Stanley Hoobing officiating. A visitation for family and friends will be held this evening from 5 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral chapel. Burial will take place Thursday, Dec. 26, at the McCall Cemetery. Blair was born June 7, 1927, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, to Dr. Milford Morgan and Ella (Sutton) Shepherd. He was raised in Montpelier, and graduated from Burley High School. He served in the Navy (medical corps) during World War II. After being discharged he attended Boise Junior College, and graduated from the San Francisco College of Mortuary Science in 1947. On Dec. 23, 1949, he married Ina Helen Miller in Palo Alto, Calif., and they had two sons. He then went on to own and operate funeral homes in California, and in 1959 he moved to Nampa, Idaho, and owned and operated Shepherd Mortuary until 1971. He owned and operated Thompson Funeral Chapel in Gooding from 1971 to 1973, and then he moved his family to McCall, where Ina and he owned and operated Conifer Cabins, which later became Shepherd's Motel. He served as Valley County sheriff from 1977 to 1988 and then worked for Rocky Mountain Information, a federally funded drug information gathering organization. He and Ina retired in 1991 and moved to Boise. Ina died Oct. 4, 1999. On April 11, 2001, he married Vivian Warren, and they divided their time between Boise and Sunnyvale, Calif. Blair and Vivian traveled extensively and both loved to RV around the country. Memberships include: past president of the San Mateo County Funeral Directors Association; past president of the Nampa Snake River Stampede, serving on the board of directors for that organization for 12 years; past president of the Nampa Rotary Club in 1967; past president of the Idaho Sheriff's Association in 1977; member of Boise Lodge #2, AF & AM; Boise Scottish Rite; El Korah Shrine; and Redeemer Lutheran Church, Boise. Survivors include his wife, Vivian Shepherd of Boise and Sunnyvale, Calif.; sons, M. Blair Shepherd II, and W. Blaine Shepherd and his wife, Donna, all of Boise; grandchildren, Blair Shepherd III, Amber Leigh Shepherd, Jennifer Masonheimer and Matt Shepherd, all of Boise; great-grandchildren, Tyler Masonheimer and Zayd Shepherd; stepsons, Robert Warren and his wife, Tanya of Modesto, Calif., and Richard Warren and his wife, Lynette of Ramona, Calif.; five stepgrandchildren; two great-stepgrandchildren and a third one on the way; sister, Sandra Grisham and her husband, Ron of Boise; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Blair was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and his first wife, Ina Shepherd. James E. Phelps
James Edmond Phelps, age 73, of Payette, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at an Ontario, Ore., care facility. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 23, at the United Methodist Church, Payette. Pastor John Tucker will officiate. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. (PST) Monday, Dec. 23, at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Baker City, Ore. Friends may call today from 4 to 7 p.m. at Shaffer-Jensen Memory Chapel, Payette. Funeral services are under the direction of Shaffer-Jensen Memory Chapel, Payette. Jim was born April 29, 1929, in Chelan Falls, Wash., to Samuel and Gladys Phelps. He was a graduate of Baker High School. Jim's life centered on his love for his family, his love of animals, and his work. He ranched in the Baker Valley as a young man. Jim was in the trucking business throughout his life and a 25-year employee of Ore-Ida Foods Inc. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Sylvia of Payette; four children, Larry Phelps and his wife, Peggy of Payette, Garry Phelps and his wife, Val of Whitefish, Mont., Ken Phelps and his wife, Kathie of Fruitland, and Julie Phelps of Boise; two sisters, Ruthie Crim of Baker City, Ore., and Rosie Pedracini of Granite, Ore.; seven grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Evelyn J. Little
Evelyn J. Little, 78, of New Plymouth, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, at Paramount Parks care facility of natural causes. Services will be held at 12 noon Monday, Dec. 23, at the Plymouth Congregational Church in New Plymouth. A brief graveside service will follow at Park View Cemetery, New Plymouth. The family would like to invite those attending to stay for lunch at the New Plymouth Senior Center following the services. Evelyn was born into two valley pioneering families, Feb. 12, 1924, in New Plymouth, a daughter of Walter Manis and Nellie Applegate Manis. Evelyn attended school in McCall and Payette. After graduating from Payette High School, she completed courses at Link's School of Business. While working at Idaho Power in Payette, Evelyn was invited on a blind date with a young rancher, Walt Little. They were married a year later on Nov. 21, 1944, and moved to the family homestead in New Plymouth. There they raised three children, Rob, Bill and Anne. Evelyn was active in the community. She never missed an opportunity to volunteer for anything that would benefit her children. She was the first Cub Scout leader in New Plymouth. She was a 4-H leader and a school volunteer for many years. She was a member of the Payette PEO chapter and served in many capacities including president. She also was active in the auxiliary branches of the Idaho Woolgrowers and the Idaho Cattle Association. She was active in the First United Methodist Church in Payette for many years, then later the Plymouth Congregational Church in New Plymouth. When Walt was elected to the state legislature, Evelyn served as precinct committeeman. She was active in the Legisladies and truly enjoyed her time with the wonderful friends she made through the organization. Survivors include her children - son and daughter-in-law, Rob and Mary of New Plymouth, son, Bill of Caldwell, and daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Doug Roberts of Meridian; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Lela Phillips of Boise, Eleanor Butler of Spokane, and Hazel Brown of Medford; a niece and several nephews and many cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Walt, in 1990; and a sister and her brother. The family would like to thank Horizon Hospice of Meridian, Dr. Alice Forsythe and her team at Saint Al's Cancer Treatment Center, and the staff at Paramount Park for the excellent care Evelyn received. Eugene Benson and Irene Benson
Praise the Lord! Gene and Irene have gone to heaven! Eugene Hugh Benson Sr. passed Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002. Bernice Irene Benson passed Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002. We know in our hearts, this is a love story that will never end. Gene was born Nov. 14, 1917, to Jay Francis and Edna May Benson in Hiawatha, Neb. (stepmother, May Binder). He had two brothers. Irene was born June 19, 1920, to Arthur Lorenzo and Beulah Gertrude Hockett in Lazear, Colo. She had nine siblings. Uncle Gene and Aunt Irene kept in close touch with all their loved ones, including many nieces and nephews, great and great-great. They loved each one of their very large family. Gene and Irene fell deeply in love and were married April 7, 1939. They traveled through life on a journey filled with faith, joy, sadness, adventure and most of all love, for over 63 years. With God as their Savior they were an outstanding example for everyone they met. They never knew a stranger. Gene and Irene's love brought three children to this world: a son, Eugene Hugh Benson Jr. married to Vivian (Hampy) of Eagle; a daughter, Virginia Lou married to Richard Turpin of Chewelah, Wash.; a daughter, Myrna Dawn married to John Burke of Payette. The love continued to spread as they were blessed with 17 grandchildren, 31 living great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. These families live throughout the West. Grandpa and Grandma had an abundant love for each of their grandkids and were very proud. Gene and Irene shared numerous homes in Washington, Colorado, California and Idaho. They were hard workers and worked many different jobs. Settling in New Plymouth, Payette and Ontario (the past 24 years) they made cherished friends along the way. Their past two years at Meadowbrook Retirement Center was comforting. The wonderful care they received was overwhelming. A memorial celebration of life was held Saturday, Dec. 14, at Haren-Wood Funeral Chapel in Payette, with grandson Tommy Turpin, minister and son Gene, storyteller, friends and family were able to share heartfelt feelings and their love for Gene and Irene. A lovely reception followed. Gene and Irene join many precious great-grandbabies and are also preceded in death by their parents, eight siblings, many brothers and sisters through marriage, and many nieces and nephews. What a reunion they're having now! Hallelujah!
