Marilyn A. Wasko
Marilyn A. Wasko, 74, of Twin Falls, Idaho died early Wednesday, May 29, 2002 at her home following an extended illness. A prayer vigil with rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 2, 2002 at Reynolds Funeral Chapel. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, June 3, 2002 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel with Fr. Robb Keller as Celebrant. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. Friends may call at Reynolds Chapel on Sunday from 4 p.m. until the time of the rosary service. The family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society, MVRMS Home Hospice Services, or to a charity of choice. Chet Eastham
Chet Eastham was born August 18, 1916 at Banks, Oregon. His parents had just moved to Oregon from Summerset, Ky. His father was a blacksmith and they followed the logging camps all over Oregon and Washington, shoeing logging horses and doing other blacksmith work. He went to school at Columbia Academy and Walla Walla Academy in College Place, Wash. On August 4, 1936, at the age of 19, Chet met and married Ruby Griffith. They lived there for a short time then moved to Pendleton where he worked for Harris Pine Mills. During WW2, he worked for Union Pacific Railroad as a fireman. After the war, they spent several years on the coast before moving to Caldwell, which has been their home for the past 50 years. Chet worked for the Idaho Conference at Gem State Seventh-day Adventist Academy for over 30 years. He held most offices in the Seventh-day Adventist Church at Caldwell, in addition to being Assistant Leader of the Idaho Conference Dorcas Federation. Chet loved the Caldwell church and all the members. He said that he wanted to Ňmeet you all when Jesus comesÓ. ChetŐs wife, Ruby, and their four children, Judy, Tom, Nancy, and John ask that you join them to celebrate ChetŐs life on June 1, 2002, at the Caldwell SDA Church (Linden and Indiana). LaVona Juanita Henderson
LaVona Norton, born on February 21, 1918 in Norton, Okla., died on June 16, 2002 at Life Care Center of Treasure Valley. She was the oldest of 3 girls and 1 boy born to Crisp and Norma Norton. The family moved from Oklahoma in 1927 finally settling in the Emmett Valley. She married Dee Henderson September 23, 1936 in Emmett, Idaho. Five children were born to the couple, Gary (Kaye) Henderson of Benton City, Wash., Tim (Jo) Henderson of Meridian, Amelia (Dennis) Robison of Phoenix, Ariz., Kris (Ralph) Alvarado of Boise, and Ken (Sue) Henderson of Horseshoe Bend; 9 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, all surviving. Preceding her in death was her husband, Dee; sisters, Norma McBride and Millie Casey, and her brother, Sid Norton. Services to be held Friday, June 21st at Potter Funeral Home in Emmett at 10:00 a.m. Visitation from 2-8 p.m. on Thursday, June 20 at the funeral home.
Murray A. Kidd
Murray A. Kidd, 79, of Boise, died on Saturday, June 15, 2002 at a Boise hospital. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 19, 2002 at Summers Funeral Homes, Boise Chapel, 1205 W. Bannock Street. Burial will follow at Morris Hill Cemetery, Boise. Visitation will be Tuesday 6-8 p.m. at Summers Funeral Home, Boise Chapel. Murray was born on August 6, 1922 in Boise, Idaho the son of Catherine and George Kidd. He grew up and attended schools in Boise. After graduation, he signed a 9 month contract with Morrison Knudsen Co. to go to Wake Island. Murray was taken prisoner by the Japanese after the bombing of Wake Island on December 23, 1941 was held in captivity during World War II, until September 10, 1945 in Japan. On return to the United States, Murray worked for the State of Idaho from January 1946 until August 1950 in the Engineering Department. September 1, 1950 Murray started working for Idaho Power Company as a groundsman in the Construction Department and was later transferred to Mountain Home where he was a lineman and later a line crew foreman. After 20 years in Mountain Home, he was transferred back to Boise where he worked in the Underground Department as an underground expediter. Murray retired from Idaho Power in October of 1984 after 34 years. On November 28, 1947 he married Lena Uranga of Boise. They were married 54 years and enjoyed their life together and traveled extensively throughout the world. Murray was know for his honesty, loyalty, and sincerity. He was an enthusiastic supporter of all his children's and grandchildren's activities, and of all local high school and college sporting events. He was also an avid hunter and golfer. He was associated with the Survivors of Wake Island since 1946 and was President in 1981-1982. Murray is survived by his wife, Lena; his daughter, Christy Aldape; his son, Bruce; his brother, Jim; his sister-in-law, Ruth Kidd; grandchildren, James and Kate Kidd, Mike, Dani, Marcie and Liz Aldape; and great grandchildren Mikhail and Autumn Kidd, and James Stewart. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Cathy; his brother, George; his son, John; and an infant son, William. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Murray's name to Idaho Elks Rehabilitation Hospital, 204 Fort Place, Boise, Idaho 83702; or to your favorite charity.
Richard "Dick" E. Sabo
Richard "Dick" E. Sabo, formerly of Boise, owner and operator of Five Corners Texaco Station, died Tuesday, June 11, 2002 in Brush Prairie of heart problems. He was 55. Rosary and Mass were celebrated on Friday, June 14, 2002. Dick was born July 3, 1946 in Boise, Idaho. He attended St. Mary's grade school and graduated from St. Teresa's Academy. He lived in Clark County, Washington for 22 years, enjoying playing pool, golf, boating, fishing and water skiing. He also loved feeding and watching the wildlife and had a project going all the time. Mr. Sabo was a past member of the Lions Club and Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his wife and best friend, Elaine; two sons, Robert Sabo and wife, Valarie of Hillsboro, Ore., Mark Sabo and wife, Candida of Battle Ground, Wash.; a sister, Carolyn Lyons of Boise; and two grandchildren, Remington and Savannagh. He was preceded in death by his mother, father, sister and brother. Burial was held at Evergreen Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Vancouver, Wash. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
Marilyn Sue Myers Low
Marilyn Sue Myers Low, 58, of Gooding, Idaho died Saturday, June 15, 2002 of cancer with her family at her side at the home of her brother in Boise, Idaho. Marilyn was born to Tren and Marie Myers on Sept. 11, 1943 in Wendell, Idaho. She graduated from Gooding High School in 1961 and went on to attend the University of Idaho, where she pledged the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. Marilyn married George Otto Low on October 27, 1962 and had three children. Marilyn worked at the Idaho State School for the Deaf and Blind for the past thirteen years, and was a member of the Cosmopolitan Chapter of Eastern Star #36. She enjoyed quilting, reading, camping and spending time at the family cabin with friends and relatives. She is survived by a daughter, Celeste Low of Kenmore, Wash., a son, Nathan Low and his wife, Staci of Emmett, Idaho; brother, John Myers, and his wife, Loretta of Boise, Idaho; and sister, Rosa Lee Rose, and husband Paul of Gooding, Idaho, and numerous nieces and nephews. Her husband, George; her son, Karl; her parents, Tren and Marie, and a sister, Irus Jean Harkins preceded her in death. The family would like to thank the doctors and nursing staff at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, St. LukeŐs Family Health Center in Meridian, and a special thank you to St. LukeŐs Hospice Care. A memorial service will be held Thursday, June 20, 2002 at the United Methodist Church at 805 Main Street in Gooding, Idaho at 11 a.m. Cremation took place in Boise, Idaho. Memorial services under the direction of Demaray Funeral Chapel in Gooding, Idaho. Abel (Abe) Vasquez
Abel (Abe) Vasquez, 70, of Nampa, passed away peacefully at his home on Easter Sunday, April 15, 2001, with his family at his side. Abe had his house in order and felt he was ready to meet his Master. Funeral Services will be conducted 10:30 a.m. at the Nampa First Church of the Nazarene on Saturday, April 21, 2001. Pastor and Friend Bob Miller will officiate. Military Graveside Rites will follow at the Kohlerlawn Cemetery of Nampa. There will be a special time visitation and sharing with the family Friday evening from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Nampa First Church of the Nazarene. Abe was born Nov. 8, 1930, at Monterey, Calif., the son of Jose O. Cano and Eloisa Garcia (Archuleta). As a child Abe moved to Colorado, and later to Idaho, with his grandmother, Raquel Trujillo in 1938. He lived in Preston, Idaho, working the crops with his grandparents and moved to the Marsing and Nampa area in the early 1940""""s. He attended elementary school in Marsing and Nampa High School class of 1949. Abe served his country proudly during the Korean War in the United States Army. He was honorably discharged from the Army in 1953. In 1954, Abe married Joan Joannie Alvarado in Nampa and they had three children (Rachel, Andy and Joseph). Abe was very active in his family life, community and church. He worked in his early years for J.R. Simplot, and Idaho Concrete Pipe. While at Idaho Concrete Pipe he did everything from digging ditches, driving truck and later was the purchasing manager. In the early 1980""""s, Abe joined the Canyon County Sheriffs Department as a Deputy and thus began his very active public/civil service career. In 1991, Governor Cecil Andrus appointed Abe to a vacant county commissioner seat and he became Idaho""""s first Hispanic commissioner and served for seven years. He loved serving our community and we all are truly blessed to have had such a person serving us. Abe was active in so many different capacities in our community, here are a few. Education was very important to Abe and he served on several Nampa School Committees for and the Head Start Program Board. He was a member of the Mercy Medical Center Board, a board member of his Church (Nampa""""s First Nazarene), a part of the First Treasure Valley Partnership (Civil Service Board), Boise State West Advisory Board, the Canyon County Organization on Aging Board, ex-officio Ada Planning Association (now called Compass) and most recently he served on the Board of Directors for the Humphrey Diabetes Education Center in Boise. Abe is survived and will be dearly missed by; his wife of 47 years, Joannie; his children, Andy ( and Emma) Vasquez, Joseph (and Cecelia) Vasquez and Rachel (and Judy) Vasquez, all of Nampa; seven grandchildren, Katie, Lucas, Beth, Sarah, Abel, Michael and Leon; three great-grandchildren, Dominic, Aundrea and Ellen; his mother-in-law, Esther Alvarado; two brothers, Rudolph Vasquez of Phoenix, Ariz., and Chris Zavala of Nampa; sisters, Rebecca Gonzales of Nampa and Alice Ramirez of Eagle; and numerous other distant family and many, many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Augustine; and sisters, Helen Cano and Angelina Zavala. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made in memory of Abe to: the Nampa First Church of the Nazarene Building Fund (600 15th Ave., S., Nampa, ID 83651). Melba N. Dempsey
Melba N. Dempsey, 88 of Boise, passed from the surly bonds of earth on Saturday, August 25, 2001 to a place she worked all her life to become a resident. A memorial mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 1, 2001 at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church, 1500 E. Wright, Boise, Idaho. Vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday evening at the church. Private internment will be held at Dry Creek Cemetery, Boise. Arrangements are under the direction of Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel. Melba was born June 26, 1913 to Ed and Dolly Miller on a farm in Glen Elder, Kansas. She graduated from Glen Elder High. She met Richard Swift Sr. in Glen Elder, and they were married. Three children were born to the union before her husbandŐs death. Melba met John Paul Hermann, and they were married. She moved to Boise where she raised her family with John before his death. While visiting her sister in Kansas, she met her soul mate, Joseph Dempsey, and they were married at St. JohnŐs Church in Boise. Melba moved to Omaha, Neb., where Joe became ill and she nursed him until his death. She returned to Boise to be with her family. Melba increased her family when she was accepted into The Order of Eastern Star, Mystic Star #81, where she moved through the chairs to become Worthy Matron in 1980. Melba was also a member of Amaranth Syringa Court #2, serving as Royal Matron in 1985-86, Daughters of the Nile, and a member of Our Lady of the Rosary. She retired from St. LukeŐs Hospital when she was 78 years young. Melba is survived by daughters, Geraldine Joanne Bailey and husband Jerry, Sharon Lee Nash and husband Harold; son, Richard Swift; granddaughters, Debra Sanders and husband Larry, Melanie Huffstodt, Heidi Nash; grandsons, Richard Swift Jr. and wife Joni, Daniel Swift; great-grandchildren, Taylor, Matt and Lily Huffstodt, Michael and Scarlett Swift, and Katlin Nash. Robert Clifton Gebhardt
Robert Clifton Gebhardt died August 29, 2001 at St. Luke's Hospital. In accordance with his wishes, a "wake" will be held at the Ranch Club, 3544 Chinden Blvd., Garden City on Wednesday, September 5th at 7 p.m. Robert was born in Aurora, Illinois on May 29, 1933. He graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in accounting. He lived in Phoenix, Ariz., Salt Lake City, Utah; and worked at Wendover, Nev. before moving to Boise in 1988. He was an active member of Boise Little Theater, serving as Picnic Chairman for several years. He was Secretary of the Eagle's Lodge Aerie #115 from 1987-1989. He was Treasurer of Stagecoach Theatre from 1991-1997. Robert will be missed by many from the Eagles, Stagecoach Theatre, Boise Little Theater, Michael's Ranch Club and Jackpot, Nevada.
E. Lee Mercer
E. Lee Mercer, 44, of Boise died suddenly of cardiac arrest on July 4, while hiking into the Jarbidge Wilderness with friends. A memorial service will be held Sunday, July 14th, at 7 p.m. at Shafer Butte campground and picnic area -- 16 miles NE on Bogus Basin Rd; 3 miles N on Forest Rd. 374; 1.5 miles E on Shafer Butte Rd. Lee was born April 24, 1958 in Baltimore, Md. where he began his life-long activism as the outings coordinator for the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club and the Chesapeake Chapter of the Sierra Club. In 1992 he began his company, Back to the Source, leading clients from all over the world on trips into remote areas from Arizona to Idaho and Wyoming. Clients and friends could look forward to his holding forth along the trail or around the fire. Lee moved to Pocatello, Idaho in 1994, where he spent a few enjoyable years before moving to Boise. While in Pocatello, he worked with his mentor, Ralph Maughan, and co-authored the Falcon Guide Hiking Wyomings Teton and Washakie Wilderness Areas in which he provides first-foot knowledge of the treasures of some of the most wild country left in the United States. Equally beloved by Lee were his annual winter excursions to the southwestern deserts. Lee logged countless miles of hiking in his lifetime wearing out many a pair of good boots and wearing the arches right out of his feet. Lee recently earned a degree in English with a writing emphasis and a certificate in technical communications from Boise State University. Lee was in the process of working on a collection of essays titled This Plantation Idaho. Friends hope to see that this and his prolific body of writing are published. Lee generously shared his love for wildlife and wilderness through his involvement and volunteer work with Protect Appalachian Wilderness, the Northern Rockies Chapter of the Sierra Club, the Alliance for the Wild Rockies, and most recently, in his passionate involvement with the Idaho Greens. Lee was the champion of grizzly bears and the Owyhee Canyonlands. Because Lee was both outspoken and a writer, his uncompromising, prophetic voice will survive him. He died with his boots on instantly, surrounded by friends, on a beautiful day in the high country. Widely read, deeply informed, articulate, passionate, and active, Lee will be sorely missed by his family, friends, and the many he served and inspired in our community. He is survived by his parents, Edgar and Harriet Mercer of Hampstead, Md., and by his younger sister, Lynn Zeher of Westminister, Md.
Barry Berkoff
Barry Berkoff of Washington, D.C. who started his career in public service on the staff of Senator Frank Church of Idaho and worked for Church from 1968 to 1981 died as a result of a rare circulatory and blood disorder in Washington D.C. on July 28, 2002. As he wished, he died at home with his family beside him. Barry was a legislative assistant to Church and had a long and distinguished career, spanning 35 years, working on Capitol Hill. He had worked the last 18 years rising to the position of Senior Policy Analyst for the firm of Thelen, Reid and Priest, L.L.P. Barry was born in Baltimore, Maryland on October 16, 1944. He attended Baltimore City College High School, Carnegie Institute of Technology, Johns Hopkins University and the University of Maryland. Barry is survived by Linda Perry Berkoff, his wife and companion of 31 years; his sons, Solomon Perry Berkoff of Chicago, IL and Nathan Radcliffe Berkoff of New York, NY; his parents, Hyman and Syvia Berkoff of Baltimore, MD; a brother, Edward Berkoff of Atlanta, GA; and many nieces and nephews. He had an infectious laugh and a well-aimed sense of humor. He was a former counselor and lifetime supporter of Police Boys and Girls Clubs. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Metropolitan Police Boys and Girls Club, 4103 Benning Rd. He will be missed by his numerous friends in Idaho. Services will be held at Joseph Gawler's Sons, 5130 Wisconsin Ave. N.W., Washington, D.C. on Friday August 2, 2002 with viewing from 12 until 2. Service will be at 2 p.m.
Paul Harris
Paul Harris, 72, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer, on Monday, July 29, 2002 at Idaho State Veterans Home in Boise, Idaho. Paul was born in Hugo, Okla. on February 10, 1930. He retired from the United States Air Force in 1968. He is survived by his wife Sheila and stepdaughter Shasta Maiers; his first wife and dear friend, Bea Harris and their children; a son Paul Harris Jr. and wife Kim, of McCall, Idaho; a son Wesley Harris and Vicki Rice, of Meridian, Idaho; a daughter, Cheryl Fullilove and husband Richard, of Eagle, Idaho and seven grandchildren. Paul is also survived by numerous relatives in Hugo, Okla. and Wichita, Kan. A remembrance gathering will be held for family and friends at the home of Paul's son, Wesley Harris at 5850 W.
