LaVerne L. Bullock
LaVerne "Smilie" L. Bullock, 76, passed away Saturday, March 24, 2001, at Capital Care Center of natural causes. He was born Aug. 24, 1924, in Cozad, Neb., son of Virgil and Virgie Bullock. He spent his childhood in Cozad, joined the U.S. Army in 1942, and was a member of the 503 Parachute Infantry and the 11th Airborne Rangers. He was honorably discharged in 1946. LaVerne returned to Cozad and married Dorothy Elizabeth Zimbelmen in 1948. In 1955, he moved his family to Boise, Idaho. LaVerne worked many years in road construction and went on to retire after 15 years of service at Flying J. Truck Stop. LaVerne was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Virgie Bullock; a sister, Bonnie Ruth; a brother, Eugene Bullock; his wife, Dorothy Elizabeth Bullock; and a granddaughter, Rebecca Olson. Survivors include his children, Teresa (Robert) Olson of Spokane, Wash., Jean (Doug) Keith, Karen (Mike) Rhodes, Timothy Bullock, Tracie (Steve) Eddy of Boise; 10 grandchildren, Brenda Hurst, Brian Keith, Wendy Roberge, John Olson, Thomas Bullock, Monica Bullock, Zackery Eddy, Mike Rhodes, Kirsten Rhodes, Jason Rhodes; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to express sincere thanks to the caregivers at Capital Care, especially, Joe and Cristy. We gratefully acknowledge care given by Life's Doors Hospice. A memorial celebration will be held Friday, March 30, at 2 p.m. at the Relyea Funeral Chapel, 318 N. Latah, Boise. Burial will follow in the Morris Hill Cemetery.
Eddie G. Cole
Eddie G. Cole, born Waxahachie, Texas, on Oct. 14, 1919. Accomplished local horseman and retired government relations executive Eddie G. Cole died Wednesday after suffering a stroke. He was 81 years old. Cole led a colorful life of wide and vaned experiences He grew up and attended schools in Redondo Beach, California. He was a graduate of Santa Barbara College (now the University of California, Santa Barbara), where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Kinesiology. He went on to earn his masters from the University of Southern California. Cole served in the U.S. Air. Force during World War II and again during the Korean conflict, where he attained the rank of captain. He was a successful football coach for fifteen years, ending his coaching career at the College of Idaho (now Albertson's College of Idaho)., where he coached nationally ranked small college teams. He earned a reputation for his successful recruiting program, enticing players from across the country to attend the little known college, including 49er great R.C. Owens. In 1989, he was inducted into the college's Athletic Hall of Fame, along with Owens. ln addition to his coaching duties, Cole was the Idaho State Athletic Commissioner for fifteen years. He was also Director of Public Relations for the World Boxing Association and Executive Secretary of the International Rodeo Association. Following his coaching career, Cole was manager of the Caldwell Chamber of commerce in Caldwell, Idaho. For many years he directed the popular Caldwell Night Rodeo, attracting national acclaim to the small venue. In 1964, he joined the J.C. Penney Company as the Coordinator of government relations in all fifty states and Puerto Rico, maintaining offices throughout the country. After retiring from J.C. Penney in 1987, Cole did not sit idle. He bought property in Elk Grove, California and started the Circle R Ranch. His love of horses rekindled, he became an active member of the Ranchero Vistadores, a Santa Barbara based riding club, and the "Flying Cowboys". earning honors during competition on his prized Paint horse, Remus. At the time of his death, Cole served as Chairman of the California State Fair, where he was first appointed by then- California State Assembly Speaker, now San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown, Jr. in 1986. Cole was also active in raising funds for local youth and community organizations such a Project Ride. He was an active sponsor of the annual Project Ride Trail ride and Dinner. He and Mrs. Cole helped to raise money to build the current facilities and have a stall named for them at the arena. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Rosier son ferry of Caldwell, Idaho, three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Judy. Laverne Paul Fotsch
Laverne Paul Fotsch passed away Monday, April 2, 2001, with members of his family by his side. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. today, April 7, at Wright Community Congregational Church, 4821 W. Franklin, Boise. "Paul" was born Oct. 23, 1923, at Boone, Iowa, the eldest son of Louis Paul and Agnes Reveda Fotsch. Paul was a devoted family man who deeply loved his parents, brothers and sisters, wife, children and grandchildren. He was a man devoted to his country, serving valiantly in the U.S. Army during World War II. For his gallantry he was decorated with four Purple Hearts, the Bronze Star and the Silver Star. Following the war Paul began an educational career that would span more than 30 years, resulting in three bachelors degrees, five masters degrees, a doctorate of philosophy, two certificates of advanced graduate study, and countless other classes taken simply out of interest. Laverne Paul Fotsch was also a man of God, earning bachelor and masters of divinity degrees from Drake University and serving congregations in the Methodist and United Church of Christ. He also was an educator teaching at the secondary and college levels as well as tireless work in Christian education. Paul met his wife of 45 years, Estelle Miller, while both were living in the Chicago area. They married in 1955 and had four children. He is survived by his wife, Estelle; their children, David of Boise, Samuel of Minneapolis, Minn., Sara Gaba of Midlothian, Va., and Laurence of Fort Collins, Colo.; their grandchildren, Larisa Gaba, Gwenyth Gaba and Joye Gaba; his brothers, Robert of Wauconda, Ill., Wesley of Salon, Iowa, Harold of St. Paul, Minn.; and his sisters, Jane DeRosear of Farmington, Iowa, Charlene Hood of Farmington, Iowa, and Dorothy Klinkhammer of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis Paul and Agnes Reveda Fotsch; and his sisters, Reveda and Betty; and his son-in-law, James Edwin Gaba Jr. Most recently Paul and Estelle have lived with their son David in Boise. Karyn (Kinzler) Lown
Karyn Lynne Lown, of Nampa, Idaho, passed into eternity early Easter morning, April 15, 2001, after a nearly two-year battle with a brain tumor. A viewing is scheduled this afternoon from 1-8 p.m. and on Thursday from 1-7 p.m. at Alsip & Persons Funeral Chapel, 404 10th Ave South in Nampa. The family will be greeting guests there from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday. A memorial celebration service is planned for Friday, April 20, at 2 p.m. at College Church of the Nazarene, 504 E Dewey Ave. in Nampa. Karyn's uncle, Dr. CJ "Clari" Kinzler, will be officiating and will be assisted by Rev. Daryl Johnson. Karyn Lown was born Karyn Kinzler, daughter of Floyd Bud and Kay, on July 16, 1967. She was raised in Nampa, Idaho, and attended Nampa High, Northwest Nazarene College and Pt. Loma Nazarene College prior to their becoming universities. She graduated PLNC in San Diego, Calif., with a Bachelor's Degree in Business and Design in 1990. She worked as a manager for The Gap and Gap Kids for six years before becoming a homemaker. She married former Navy LT Troy W. Lown on June 18, 1994, and lived in San Diego, Corpus Christi and Denver with him before returning to Nampa. Surviving Karyn are her husband of almost seven years, Troy Lown of Portland, Ore., and their two year-old daughter, Jensyn Lorree, both residing in Denver, Colo.; parents, Bud and Kay Kinzler of Nampa; and brother and sister-in-law, Chip and Beth Kinzler, also of Nampa. Karyn was preceded in death by her sister, Kristyn Lorree, who passed away in 1990. Karyn was a joyful, innocent angel who was a dedicated and loving wife, mommy and daughter. Her heart was even more beautiful than her precious face. She was a devout Christian who loved the Lord and wished the same for others. Earl Bob Roberts
Earl Bob Roberts, 73, of Nampa passed away on Wednesday May 23rd, 2001, at the V.A. Extended Care Hospital. A Memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m., Friday, May 25th, 2001, at the Nampa First Christian Church, Pastor Bill Garrett will officiate. Bob was born June 25, 1927, in Manly, Iowa to Arthur and Emma (Newbery) Roberts. He grew up in Iowa attending schools there and graduating from High School in 1944. He served his country proudly during World War II in the United States Navy. In 1950, Bob married Lois Nall in Boise and they had three children. Earl is survived by; his wife, of nearly 51 years; three children: Brenda (& Charlie) Mattson, Spencer (& Karen) Roberts and Darin Roberts all of Nampa; two granddaughters; three great grandchildren; three brothers: Art Roberts of California, Don (& Velma) Roberts of Iowa and Delbert (& Jeanette) Roberts of Iowa; his mother-in-law, Fran Nall of Boise; and numerous nieces, nephews and other family. He was preceded in death by his parents and father-in-law, John Nall. The family suggests memorials be made to the V.A. Extended Care Hospice Program (500 W. Katie Lauren Havneros
Katie Lauren Havneros was born Nov. 13, 1998. Katie went to join the angels on Monday, June 4, 2001, at 9:27 a.m. after a long and fearless battle with leukemia. She made the toughest decision that any 2 1/2 year-old has ever had to make when, on Monday morning, she chose to be with her grandmother, the angels and her Lord and Savior. Katie was preceded in death by her grandmother, Pamala Tucker; grandfather, Curtis Havneros; great-grandmother and great-grandfather, Bluford Gene and Lahoma Tucker; aunt, Patie Alice Tucker; uncle, Jimmy Tucker and aunt, Judy Tucker. Katie was loaned by the angels to share these joyous years with us and now that she has earned her wings, the angels carried her home to be with them. Katie is survived by her mother, Monica Havneros of Boise; father, Matt Garza of Delano, Calif.; aunt, Gussy Tucker of Boise; aunt, Stephanie Tucker of Boise; uncle, Ivar Havneros of Boise; uncle, Dan Tucker of Boise; and numerous other aunts, uncles and cousins. Katherine Josephine Walls Heaton
Katherine Josephine Walls Heaton passed away Tuesday, June 26, 2001, at the age of 71, following a long illness. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 30, at the United Methodist Church in Glenns Ferry. Burial will follow at Glenn Rest Cemetery. A visitation for family and friends will be held at the church Saturday from 10 a.m. until time of services. Arrangements are under the direction of Summers Funeral Homes, Boise Chapel. Katherine was born Oct. 25, 1929, on a small farm west of Twin Falls, near Buhl. After her father's death, when she was 12 years old, the family moved to Twin Falls where she attended high school. Katherine was an award-winning photographer for 27 years. She lived in many of the western states but returned to spend the last 25 years living in the Glenns Ferry area. Eight of those years were spent on the old Berry Ranch on Bennett Mountain which she and her second husband, Steiner Heaton, purchased in 1976. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Cecil Walls; three brothers, Jack, Dudley and Kenneth; and two sisters, Grace and Ozetta. She is survived by her husband, Steiner Heaton, now residing in Boise; two daughters, LouCinda Parker of Spirit Lake, Idaho, and Nora Kathleen Lanning of Sanders, Idaho; two brothers, Charles (Chuck) Walls and his wife, Ruth of Benicia, Calif., and Clifford Walls and his wife, Virginia of Eugene, Ore.; one sister, Betty Davis of Los Gatos, Calif.; five grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Earl Dee Jones
Earl Dee Jones, 48, of Jerome, Idaho died Tuesday July 10, 2001 peacefully at his home after a short battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held Friday, July 13, 2001 at 11 a.m. in the Jerome L.D.S. 3rd Ward Chapel, 825 East Avenue B, Jerome. Bishop Jerry Higley will be conducting. The family will receive friends at a viewing Thursday evening from 6:30-9 p.m. at Farnsworth Mortuary, 1343 So. Lincoln, Jerome, and Friday from 9-10:30 a.m. at the 3rd Ward Building prior to the services. Interment : Jerome Cemetery. He was born to Melvin S. and Venna C. Jones on October 28,1952 in Brigham City, Utah. Earl had a very strong love for his family, in his own words, Family was his most prized possession. He had an even greater love for his Savior, Jesus Christ. He and his family are active members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Earl held a variety of callings within the Church, his favorite ones involved dealing with children, youth, and missionary work. For the past 26 years Earl has worked in the horticulture industry, owning and maintaining a variety of businesses. He found great satisfaction in developing an honest and close relationship with his customers, whom he was happy to call friends. Earl is survived by his wife of 26 years, Janice Swank Jones; children, Ryan(Jamie), Andy (Kayla), Chris, Jenny, Greg, Wynn, and one grandson, Simon Andrew. Parents are: Melvin and Lenora Jones, brothers; Denny, Jerry, Ed and Don Jones. Sisters are: Dyan Andrus, Delora Versluys, Fiama Suwanrit and Clarissa Beltran, his Father and Mother-in Law, Warran and Eva Swank. He was preceded in death by his mother, Venna and sister, Jeanie Stevens.
Earl E. Nelson
Earl E. Nelson, 59, of Boise, passed away at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center on Thursday, July 19, 2001. He was born Dec. 21, 1941, at Caldwell, to Florence and Lester Nelson. Earl was raised in Marsing and attended school there. He worked for Leonard Bledsoe for several years. He drove 18-wheelers for several employers until 1968, when he was seriously injured in a truck accident and was a paraplegic for 33 years. Earl resided at Samaritan Village Apartments in Boise. The family wishes to thank the staff at St. Luke's, all the caregivers that Earl was associated with over the years, and all the residents at the Samaritan Village Apartments. And a very special heartfelt thanks to his caregiver, Ruthie Cooper, who was with him for 17 years. Earl was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Dale. He is survived by 10 sisters, Sylvia Obieta, Faye (Domingo) Uriguen, Violet Sutterfield, all of Caldwell, Marilyn (Jim) Long of Nampa, Elaine Lawrence, Myrna (Ramon) Ocamica, Donna (Steve) Calacorta, sister-in-law, Joanne Nelson and stepmother, Grace Nelson, all of Homedale, Charlene (Winfred) Matherly of Baltimore, Md., Josie (Fred) Hash of Springdale, Ark., Vicki (Denis) Hill of Roslyn, Wash., numerous nieces and nephews, and three aunts. Earl loved fishing and pull tabs, family get-togethers, holidays and conversations. Cremation was under the direction of Flahiff Crematory, Caldwell. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 28, at the American Legion Hall in Homedale. A potluck dinner will follow.
Johnie Dene Hiatt
Johnie Dene Hiatt, age 54 of Kansas City, Kansas died Wednesday, July 25, 2001 at his residence. Mr. Hiatt was born April 26, 1947 in Boise, Idaho. He was owner and operator of the Hiatt Construction Company in Kansas City, Kan. for 20 years. Mr. Hiatt was a veteran of the Marine Corps. He will be missed by friends and family. Survivors include his mother, Carol Garcia of Bullhead City, Arizona; his daughter, Heidi Hiatt of Boise, Idaho and his sister, Teri Hiatt of Bullhead City, Ariz. Cremation. Jonathon Michael Barnes-Covill
Jonathon Michael Barnes-Covill, 21, of Glenns Ferry, died Monday, August 4, 2001. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, August 17th at Summers Funeral Homes, McMurtrey Chapel in Mountain Home. Jonathon Michael Barnes-Covill was born December 7, 1979, in Carmichael, Calif. and moved with the family, eventually setting in Glenns Ferry where he attended school. Jon was popular in school participating on the track and basketball teams. Jon loved all sports and enjoyed the outdoors, hiking, camping, fishing, and swimming. Jon enjoyed doing things with his father Robert and going places with him. Jon especially liked 4-wheeling with his father on the tank trails at Fort Bliss. Jon explored different professions and eventually joined the Army. Jon was warmed by the love of his family including his parents, Robert and Sharyle of Glenns Ferry; his married sister, Lisa and Jesse Lopez of Weiser; Perry and Trina Savage of Boise, Loren Barnes of Glenns Ferry; grandparents, Clifford and Roberta Covill of Glenns Ferry; Aunts, Nena Whitehead of Ore., Kristy Reninger of Boise, Kathy and Mike Lavelle of Fla., Ruth and John Kolb of Calif.; uncles, Vernon Whitehead of Boise, William Boehm of Boise, Keith and Sue Covill of New York. Extended family, Jr. and Linda guy of Payette; sisters, Nakeia and Sonja Tucker of Mountain Home; nine nieces, five nephews and good friend Gary Tucker. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Joyce Culligan, grandfather John Boehm and best friend David Hitesman. Edna Mae Freeman
Edna Mae Freeman, 80, of Boise, died Friday, Aug. 17, 2001, in a Boise hospital. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, at the Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel, Boise. Allen Allers, elder of Bible Students of Boise, will officiate. Burial will follow at Cloverdale Cemetery, Boise. Edna was born March 9, 1921, in Boise, to Harvey and Jean Hahn, and was educated in the Nampa schools. She was married to Leonard C. Freeman on Aug. 22, 1943, in Fort Stockton, Texas. She started her career in the floral business at Boise Floral in Boise in the 1940s. After working in several other shops in the valley, she opened her own flower shop, Freeman's Flowers, in 1967. Edna worked in the floral business for 60 years. She touched many lives with her special talents and made many friends along the way. From wholesalers to all of her customers, Edna was loved and respected. She was especially fond of Rick Patton and his family. Edna loved to go to the horse races and also enjoyed trips to Reno and Las Vegas, Nev., to play. Her special interests, however, were her grandsons. They both brought great joy to her life from the time they were born, until her death. Survivors include her son, Harvey Freeman and his wife, Ellen; grandsons, Adam and Matthew Freeman; her sister, Dorothy McDowell; and her niece, Georgeann who took good care of her during the last few months of her life; and other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harvey and Jean Hahn; and her husband of 53 years, Leonard Freeman.
