Joseph Leonard Brogdon
Joseph Leonard Brogdon, son of Joseph L. Brogdon of Texas and Erma (Tiede) Brogdon of Gifford, Idaho was born July 5, 1935, Boise, Idaho died Tuesday, March 26, 2002 at home of esophageal cancer. Private burial was held at Dry Creek Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Cloverdale Funeral Home. Joe was the youngest and only son of the Brogdon children: Juanita (Schoonover), Dorothy (Vogt) and Darlene (Imhoff). He grew up in southeast Boise near Boise State University and built a home which is now the site of the new student recreational center off University Drive and Michigan Avenue. He attended Boise schools and graduated from Boise High School in 1954. Joe continued many of those high school friendships through their common interest in sports. Even though wasn't physically a large fellow, he had a lot of hustle and help Boise High win the consolation basketball game against Pocatello in 1954. He also enjoyed participating in baseball, tennis, bowling, golf and shooting pool. After high school, Joe worked construction with his dad and helped him build the Idaho Transportation building on State Street. That background evolved into a desire to become an architect. He attended Boise Junior College, University of Idaho, graduated from Idaho State University in 1966. He received architectural license #767 in February 1975. Joe worked four years for the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare under the Hill-Burton Program, then went to Public Works where he was architect-in-charge of the Capitol Mall. He retired from the state in 1990. Joe always had a soft spot for stray cats and loved the many he took in over the years. Joe is survived by his wife, Renai, of 20 years; step-son, Jamis Harms; a daughter from JoeÕs first marriage, Fran Guita, her husband, Gary and their two children, Danielle and Gary, Jr.; and one remaining sister, Darlene Imhoff. At JoeÕs request, no funeral services will be held; however, a memorial pool game will be scheduled at a later date for family and close friends. The family would like to thank the staff at MSTI, St. LukeÕs Hospice and their neighbors at Boulder Creek: Mark and Lori Hilton, Dan and Teresa Johnson, and Pam and Avery Segale for their concern and thoughtfulness. In lieu of flowers the family suggest memorials be made in JoeÕs name to the Idaho Humane Society, 4775 Dorman, Boise, ID 83705.
Lora Mullinex
Lora Mullinex was born July 3rd, 1920. She is survived by her husband, Willis Mullinex of Cascade, Idaho; one brother, Wendal Rogers of Arizona; two brothers-in-law, Dale Mullinex of Granby, Colo., Dean Mullinex of Grandlake, Colo..; one sister-in-law of Vinton, Iowa; nine nieces, six nephews. She was a member of Shepard Faith Mountains Lutheran Church. She was a life member of American Legion Auxiliary. Memorial Services will be held at the Home for family and close friends on Saturday, March 30 at 2:30 p.m.
Myrna F. Marker-Lovelace
Myrna F. Marker-Lovelace, 70, beloved mother, sister and friend passed from this life on Monday evening March 25, 2002. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 30, 2002 at Eagle Heights Baptist Church, 291 N. 1st Street, Eagle, Idaho. Services are under the direction of Riverside Funeral Service. Myrna was born in Forsythe, Mont., November 21, 1931 to Esther Wolfe and George Schelin. She was married to Walter A. Marker in March 1949. They had two daughters, Rhonda and Debra. When her daughters were teenagers she returned to school and obtained her degree in business administration at Boise State University. She worked for the Idaho Lung Association and then the Boise Chamber of Commerce until her retirement. Walter died in 1986 of lung cancer and after 10 years of widowhood Myrna wed Melvin T. Lovelace, a retired fireman in November of 1996. She and Melvin enjoyed 4 years of wonderful retirement, dancing, camping, fishing, singing, and performing with the Old Time Fiddlers. Mel became ill with lung cancer in October 2000 and Myrna nursed him through this illness until his death in November 2001. Myrna was diagnosed with leukemia in January of 2002 and lost her own battle with cancer on March 25. She is mourned and missed by her sisters, Gloria Schelin and Velda Wolfe; daughters, Rhonda (Todd) Hall, Debra (Keith) Durni; granddaughter, Rickie Lee Marker-Hoffman; stepdaughter, Barbara Anson; and extended family, grandchildren, Rick (Rebecca) and Bill Anson, Tricia and Michelle Durni, and Angela, Tim and Logan Hall. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the doctors, nurses, respiratory staff and physical therapists at St. Alphonsus Hospital Oncology and ICU wards for their gracious and loving care of Myrna.
Olive L. Scovel
Olive L. Scovel, 83, of Placerville, Idaho, died Tuesday in a Nampa Care Center after a long illness. Graveside services will be held on Saturday March 30, 2002 at 2 p.m. at the Elmwood Cemetery in Gooding, Idaho. Services are under the direction of Accent Funeral Home, Meridian. Olive was born December 8, 1918 in Groveland, Idaho to Jessie and Laura Mason. She married Dale Scovel on March 25, 1943. They resided in the Gooding area for many years where they operated a farm and later Scovel's Repair Shop. Olive and Dale retired and moved to Placerville, Idaho in the early seventies, where they made many friends and happily spent their remaining years. Olive is survived by two brothers, Curtis and Theron Mason, and a step-son, Alvin Scovel, and 5 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, and eleven brothers and sisters, and her husband, Dale of 57 years.
Azzira Celli
Azzira Celli, 98, former long time Pocatello resident passed away at a care facility Friday, August 10, 2001 in Boise after an illness. She was the mother of Annie Burton on 7701 Ustick Rd. in Boise. Graveside services were today at 3:30 p.m. Mt. View Cemetery, in Pocatello. Downard Hansen Funeral Home handled arrangements.
A. Gordon Schlafke
A. Gordon Schlafke, 84, died suddenly Sunday morning, Sept. 23, 2001, at Ashley Manor. Rev. Ray James will conduct graveside services in the Meridian Cemetery at 1 p.m., Thursday, September 27, 2001. Services are under the direction of Riverside Funeral Service, Boise. Gordon was born July 20, 1917, in Ashtabula, Ohio, to Arthur John Schlafke and Harriett E. LaDue. He grew up in Ashtabula and as a young man was turned down for military service so he came to St. Maries, Idaho with the CCC's in 1935. He got a job with the Forest Service in 1936 and worked fighting fires and living on Lookout until 1940. He returned to Ohio during the winters. He moved to Mackay, Idaho in 1945 and built the Wagon Wheel Motel. He then brought out his widowed mother and younger brother and sister to live in Mackay. He gave his mother the strength and support she needed after his father's death. In 1953, Gordon moved to Boise, where over the next several years he built the Thunderbird Motel and the Stardust Motels in Boise and Idaho Falls. He took great pride in the quality and workmanship of every job he did. Gordon married Ardis Burt on Nov. 26, 1960 in Caldwell. They lived in Boise and Meridian and enjoyed time spent at their cabin in McCall. He also was an avid golfer and loved to fish and bowl, and to hunt in his younger years. On Sept. 8, 1999, he accepted the Lord as his personal Savior at home with Ardis. Gordon suffered with Alzheimer's in his last years. He was cared for at home by his wife and daughter until April 2001, when he went to live in Ashley Manor. The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to Stephanie and Shirley at Ashley Manor for their constant loving care. Survivors include his wife, Ardis; son, Randy Schlafke of Boise; daughter, Carole Vaughn and husband, Garret of Nampa; son, James Schlafke Clawson and wife, Susan of Charlottesville, Va; sisters, Helen Moy of Marysville, Calif., and Irma Rukavina of Pocatello, Idaho; and a brother Paul Schlafke and wife Sheron of Idaho Falls. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, Cherie Ann, and by his brother, Robert. The family suggests memorials in Gordon's name be made to the American Red Cross, who purchased him a suit in 1935 so he could graduate from high school. Family and friends may come for a viewing from 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, September 26, 2001 at Riverside Funeral Home, 9603 W. Chinden Blvd, Boise.
A. Lloyd Beirnes
A. Lloyd Beirnes, 91, died January 14, 2002, at a local care center. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 17, at 2 p.m., at the Alden-Waggoner Chapel in Boise. Lloyd was born October 14, 1910 in Bottineau County, N.D., the son of Everett M. and Lorena (Stewart) Beirnes. The family moved to Whitefish, Mont. when Lloyd was six years old where he attended school, graduating from Whitefish High school in 1929. In 1934 Lloyd married Gladys Decker and two children were born of this marriage, Sandra Joy and Robert Michael. That marriage was later dissolved. In 1960 Lloyd married Beverly Weybright in Boise, Idaho. Lloyd worked at various jobs throughout his life. He sailed with the Dollar Steamship Lines while a young man, and later became a successful salesman for several companies before locating in Boise, Idaho, and becoming sales manager for Bean Pipe and Tank Corporation. He held that position for a number of years and later became general manager of that company, retiring in 1978. Lloyd was a great fly fisherman and spent many happy hours on the streams in Idaho and Montana, pursuing his lifetime love. He attended the First United Methodist Church. He was a member of Oriental Lodge No. 60, the Scottish Rite and the El Korah Shrine. He was a charter member of Crane Creek Country Club. Lloyd is survived by his wife of 41 years, Beverly; two, children, Sandra (Bill) Foster of Phoenix, Ariz. and R. Michael Beirnes of Kent, Wash., two step-daughters, Allyson (Richard) Kousky and Tawny (Ken) Aldrich, both of Boise, Idaho; six grandchildren, five great- grandchildren and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Arloene Wheatley. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to the Boise Rescue Mission or a charity of choice.
Andre B. Truden
Andre B. Truden, 81, of Boise died Jan. 28, 2001, at his residence. ÊA memorial gathering will be held at 2 p.m. today, Friday, Feb. 2, at Clair and Betty Whitlock's home, 3250 S. Bridgeport Lane in Boise. Burial will take place in Cloverdale Memorial Park. ÊAndre was born July 12, 1919, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Vince and Mary Burja. He graduated from Utah State University in 1941. Andre also served in the US Army during WWII. On Dec. 20, 1946, Andre married Jessie Vincent in Marfa, Texas. He began his career in Texas, with Soil Conservation Service and was employed with the Bureau of Land Management in Nevada. He transferred to Boise with the BLM in 1969, and retired in 1975. ÊHis wife, Jessie; daughter, Pamela Hardy of Portland, Ore.; son, Michael Truden of Redding, Calif.; and seven grandchildren survive Andre. ÊThe family requests no flowers, but suggests memorials may be made to the Idaho Youth Ranch, 7025 W. Emerald, Boise, ID 83704; or to the charity of your choice.
Amy A. Stradley
Amy A. Stradley, 98, of Nyssa, Ore., passed away Friday, April 27, 2001, in an Ontario, Ore., care center. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 2, at the Nyssa Lienkaemper Chapel. Burial will follow at Hilltop Cemetery. Friends may call this evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Nyssa chapel. Amy Stradley was born Sept. 1, 1902, the fifth child of 10 born to her pioneer parents John T. and Nora Daisy Ray. She attended school at Nyssa, but quit in her junior year to marry Elmer B. Stradley in January 1920. Amy cooked for men at Andy Little sheep camp. The men really like her pies and donuts. She and Elmer bought a ranch on the corner of Clark Boulevard and Gem Avenue. Three children were born to them, Ethel Mae (Harold) Dail, Bill A. (Jeaneen) Stradley, and Annette (Boyd) Haney. After Amy's husband died in 1959, she again used her cooking skills. She worked from 1961 to 1971 in the Nyssa school cafeteria. When she retired from this job she sold the ranch and moved to the Nyssa Senior Citizens Manor where she resided for 12 years and enjoyed living there. But she had not given up cooking; she probably baked a ton of cookies for daily vacation Bible schools and to send to Shiloh Bible camp in Donnelly. She also cooked several years at the Bible camps. Popcorn balls were another of her specialties at Halloween and Christmas. Her nine grandchildren enjoyed spending time at "Grammies." Twenty-three great-grandchildren were added to Amy's family and four great-great-grandsons and two great-great-granddaughters. Amy's greatest joy was to have all of her family help her celebrate her September 1st birthdays with a Labor Day camp-out at Catherine Creek; each family taking part in the outdoors Sunday church services. She is survived by a sister-in-law, Francis Ray; and a sister, Agnes (George) Coffman. Amy was a longtime member of the Arcadia Sunshine Club. She will be missed by the people of the Owyhee Community Church as she was a member and faithful attendee of all church functions. Memorials may be given to Shiloh Bible Conference, Donnelly.
Adam Joseph (Joe) Straub
Adam Joseph (Joe) Straub, age 87, born Dec. 28, 1914, at North Hempstead, N.Y., died Tuesday, June 5, 2001. He grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y., and completed college with a degree in accounting. His passion was photography, and he joined the Army Air Force in April 1942 where he served in the air offensive against Japan and through the Western Pacific. He was a camera technician specialist. In December 1945 he was honorably discharged. He received several medals: Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal and lapel button issued ASR Score (Sept. 2, 1945). Joe relocated to Southern California where he spent most of his adult life. He worked in the motion picture industry as a negative cutter. He retired in 1977 from Technicolor. He was a great historian and advent organic gardener. He loved all of God's animals and all strays found a home with him. He would give anyone in need whatever he had. He lived a simple life but made all rich who knew him. Joe spent most of his free time at the ocean, which he loved more then any other place. His children and grandchildren all got to share his love of the ocean with him, and are some of their fondest memories. He was a loving father and a good friend to all that knew him. He was a true son of God and his family takes comfort knowing he is with our Lord in Heaven. Sons, Larry Raymond, Barry Raymond; daughters, Fern Ditzler and Sheila LaRossa, survive Joe. He also has six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He spent the last 10 years with his daughter and son-in-law, Sheila and Tony LaRossa who are thankful they had time in the last part of his precious life to spend together. It is impossible to write how much Joe gave to his family to make each of them a healthy and happy adult. "Thank you Dad, Love & Kisses Forever & Always." Viewing will be Sunday, June 10, from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Cloverdale Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 11, at Dry Creek Cemetery.
Joshua Robert Keele
Joshua Robert Keele, 23, of Boise, Idaho formerly of Ontario, Ore., died Friday, April 19, 2002 from injuries sustained in an auto accident in Eugene, Ore. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 26, 2002 at the Ontario First Church of the Nazarene with Pastor James Aalgaard of St. PaulÕs Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Ontario. Friends may call Thursday, April 25, 2002 from 6-8 p.m. at the Ontario Lienkaemper Chapel. Joshua was born September 30, 1978 at Caldwell, Idaho, the son of Bill and Janice Peden Keele. He was raised and educated in Ontario where he graduated from Ontario High School in 1997. While in high school, Joshua received many awards in Cross Country and Band. Joshua was accepted into the Music In May Honor Band at Pacific University in 1997. He received a full-ride scholarship to Treasure Valley Community College and also the John Phillip Sousa Award Scholarship. At the time of his death, Joshua was living in Boise where he worked for Micron Technologies. Joshua was avid in Scouting and received his Eagle Award, he loved his snowboarding, golf, his car, his music and most of all his family and friends. Joshua was a wonderful son, brother, grandson, cousin, nephew and friend and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his parents, Bill and Janice Keele of Ontario; a sister, Erin D. Keele and brother-in-law, Joel Jackson of Boise. Grandparents, Bob and Doraine Keele and Bob and Jean Peden, all of Ontario. Aunts and uncles, Betti and Steve Fleming of Boise, Richard and Geraldine Keele of Beaverton, Ore., and Marcia and Tom Roland of Payette, Idaho. His cousins, Mark Keele, Sharon Rhinehart, Sam Rhinehart, Monica Roland, Andy Roland, Nick Roland, Will Roland, Claude Keele and Alex Keele. Great uncles, William H. Amy Elizabeth McGee
Amy Elizabeth McGee was born in Blackfoot, Idaho, on June 30, 1981. She moved to Boise in 1997, and passed away on Tuesday, July 31, 2001. She is survived by her parents, Patricia and Albert McGee, and her sister, Sarah Lynette McGee. She will be missed by them, her extended family and her many friends. Amy was a beautiful baby who became a beautiful child, and finally, a beautiful woman. But Amy's beauty really came from within, blessed with innumerable attributes; her beauty, grace, integrity, dedication and intelligence were exceptional Ñ yet only a small part of this complex person. Her specialness was obvious to anyone, and everyone, except herself! She lived her short life with compassion and empathy for all, and even animals, it seemed, were the ones to take delight in her. The anguish and mourning we all experience with her loss to us, must somehow be balanced by the joy of those with whom she has now graced with her presence. "Live forever in Heaven my Angel." Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 6, in the Boise 11th Ward LDS Chapel, 6711 Northview, Boise. A viewing will be held one hour prior to services at the church. Interment will follow in Dry Creek Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Zeyer Funeral Chapel, Nampa.
Ancyn E. (Jerry) Sullivan
Ancyn E. (Jerry) Sullivan, of Boise, died Monday, Nov. 19, 2001, at a Boise nursing home; he was 89 years old. Jerry was born June 14, 1912, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Ancyn and Eleanor Sullivan. From there he moved to Emmett, Idaho, where he graduated from Emmett High School in 1931. In 1934 he married Nettie Louise Mills and shortly thereafter, became a proud father of two daughters, Marilyn and Kathleen. He and Nettie lived in Emmett where Jerry worked as the projection operator at the Ideal Theatre, as well as serving his country in the Home Guard during World War II. In 1947 Jerry moved his family to Cascade where he ran the Cascade Movie Theatre and watched his two daughters grow before his eyes. In 1957 Jerry moved his family to Boise and began working for the U.S. Forest Service as a log scaler. He remained employed with the U.S. Forest Service until his retirement in 1972. Jerry enjoyed his golden years with Nettie, until her death in 1997. The loss of his spouse of over 63 years took its toll on Jerry, and his health began to falter. Other than his wife and family, Jerry's greatest pleasure was gardening and sharing his harvest with family and friends. He enjoyed photography and left a family treasure of pictures and home movies that warm our hearts every time we look at them. He was a wonderful man, a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was loved and will be missed by all. His parents, a sister, and his wife preceded Jerry in death. Jerry is survived by his two daughters, Marilyn Prows of Newark, Calif., and Kathleen Deck of Boise; seven grandchildren, Jeannie Likens, Allen Prows and Scott Prows, all of California, Angela Hammond, Lisa Talik, Mike Deck and Terry Deck, all of Idaho; and 18 great-grandchildren in Idaho and California.
