Elizabeth Ziegler

Funeral Mass was Thursday at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Coeur d'Alene. Burial at Evergreen Cemetery.
Elizabeth Ziegler, 95, Coeur d'Alene, died Sunday, August 10, 2003, at LaCrosse Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Born September 1, 1907, to Mary Eva (Feller) and Carl Gachne in Balfour, ND, she was raised in North Dakota where they farmed and raised cattle and wheat.
Elizabeth and Philip Ziegler were married January 31, 1927, in Karlsruhe, ND. They eventually established their home near Balfour, farming and parenting their 16 children. The family moved to Spokane in 1958, where they lived for a year. From Spokane they moved to the Post Falls-Coeur d'Alene prairie, until 1965 when they finally moved to Post Falls.
In Post Falls Elizabeth was a member of St. George's Catholic Church and the Post Falls Senior Center. She enjoyed spending time with her family, playing cards, gardening, her beautiful flowers, and an occasional trip to a casino.
At age 90, she was moved to LaCrosse Health and Rehabilitation Center. While there she was a regular member of St. Pius X Catholic Church. She continued to enjoy her family, playing cards, eating out, and going for drives.
Elizabeth is survived by sons Carl, Anton(Tony), Leander(Andy), and Philip (David) Ziegler, all of Post Falls, Leonard and Donovan(Don) Ziegler, both of Devils Lake, ND, Emanuel(Bill) Ziegler of Kennewick, WA, Lawrence Ziegler of Athol, ID; daughters Eleanor Eisenzimmer and Rosella(Rose) Grossman, both of Minot, ND, Anna(Ann) Schiele, of Balfour, ND, and Elizabeth(Betty) Johnson of Waterville, WA; 56 grandchildren, 94 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Philip, in 1975; daughters Mary Bromley and Brigetha Bachmier; sons Walter(Valentine) and John Ziegler; and three grandchildren.

Robert Phelps
October 3, 1930 ~ August 9, 2003
Funeral services were Friday at English Funeral Chapel, Post Falls, with burial to follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Post Falls.
Robert (Bud) Lee Phelps, 72, Post Falls, passed away at home on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003. Bud was born Oct. 7, 1930, to Charles and Grace Phelps in Hardin, Mont.
Bud served in the Navy from 1951-55. He married Joan Pudwill on April 3, 1954. For 20 years, he worked as a sawyer and then as an independent long-haul truck driver for 25 years.
Bud leaves behind Joan, his wife of 49 years; son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Sharon Mader, Seattle, Paul Phelps, Athol; daughter Gloria Simon, Ronan, Montana, daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Booy Dejarlais, Post Falls; 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; brothers Harold, Athol, and John, Coeur d'Alene.
Bud was preceded in death by his parents, brother Charles and daughter Shirley Amr.
Al Becker
October 15, 1919 ~ August 10, 2003
Memorial service will be held at a later date at the Rathdrum Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness. Burial will be at Pinegrove Cemetery in Rathdrum.
Al Becker, 83, Rathdrum, passed Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003, at home.
Al was born Oct. 15, 1919, to Katherine (Lechner) and Jacob Becker in Fish Trap, Wash., where he was raised. He graduated from Sprague High School and attended Eastern Washington University.
In 1939, during World War II, Al enlisted in the Coast Guard and served until 1946. He returned to Spokane and moved in 1952 to Rathdrum to farm. Al also worked as a civilian for the Navy and Army Corps of Engineers, from which he retired in 1975. He went in partnership with his son, Dave, in the DeMarre Luth Company and retired from there in 1991.
Al was an active member of the Rathdrum Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness. He enjoyed gardening, farming and spending time with his family.
Al is survived by his wife, Sophia, at home; son Dave Becker, Rathdrum; daughters April Fredean, Brooklyn, N.Y., Susan Moore, Rathdrum; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, with one expected Oct. 15; brother Robert C. Becker, Sequim, Wash.; and sister Kate Dennis, Coulee Dam, Wash.
He was preceded in death by six brothers and four sisters.
Ursa Campbell
May 21, 1924 ~ August 12, 2003
Ursa May Campbell, 79, Coeur d'Alene, died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2003, in Coeur d'Alene.
She was born May 21, 1924, in Crosby, N.D., to Leona Elain Squire and Walter D. Brothers. Ursa moved from North Dakota to this area 75 years ago and has lived in Coeur d'Alene for 35 years. She was a homemaker.
Ursa collected salt shakers. She lovedembroidery and taught many nieces to do needle work. She enjoyed playing the harmonica and listening to music.
Ursa is survived by her brothers, Ben Brothers and wife Mary Lou, Albert Brothers and wife Peggy; sister, Bernice Davis; nieces and nephews, Richard Pennington, Ron Davis, Eileen McCoffrey, Arlene Guimond, Yvonne Dunning, Allen Brothers, Dale Morris, Walter Morris, Stanley Morris, Connie Franz and Cathy Nickle.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters Gladys Pennington, Beatrice McNeil, brothers Otto, Irvin and Wallace Brothers, nieces Barbara Perry, Margie Ashworth, Jeanette Johnson, Karen Vince, and nephew Colin Morris.
Memorial service were Monday at Life Care Center, 500 W. Aqua Ave., Coeur d'Alene. Graveside followed at Evergreen Cemetery, Post Falls.
Thelma Quaring
July 8, 1924 ~ August 15, 2003
Thelma Gertrude "Kiddo" Quaring, 79, Post Falls, died Friday, Aug. 15, 2003 in Post Falls. She was born July 8, 1924, in Lead, S. Dak., to William and Lillian Burnett Granner.
She moved from South Dakota to Spokane when she was a young girl, then to Post Falls in 1980. A homemaker, she was a member of Post Falls Eagles Aerie 3682, and the Eagles Ritual Team and held many offices with the Eagles including past president member of the VFW Auxiliary.
Thelma is survived by granddaughter Lisa in Washington state; cousins Barbara (Don) Arps, Vaughn, Mont., Joan Loves, Colfax, Wash., and many other cousins in Michigan; and friends and neighbors Bonnie Angele, Joyce Petersen and Harold Parrish. She was preceded in death by her husband and two sons.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Pines Cemetery in the Spokane Valley.
David L. Ellis

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the VFW section of Forest Cemetery, Coeur d'Alene.
David L. Ellis, 79, Coeur d'Alene, died Friday, Aug. 15, 2003, at LaCrosse Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Born Nov. 10, 1923, in Annis, Idaho, to Kate (Morgan) and Henry Ellis, David served in the Army during World War II and then Korea. He later joined the Air Force, from which he retired as an air policeman.
David married Peggy McCold in 1957 in Loton, Okla. They came to Coeur d'Alene in 1959 from Wichita Falls, Texas.
A life member of VFW in Coeur d'Alene, David was also a member of Disabled American Veterans in Coeur d'Alene and Church of Christ in Dalton Gardens.
David is survived by his son and daughter-in-law George Thomas and Donna Steeley of Coeur d'Alene; daughter Wanda Marie Shoup, Pittsburg, Kan.; grandchildren George Tom Steeley Jr., Coeur d'Alene, Keith Steeley, Spokane, Caren Dorsey, Springfield, Va., Sharron Davis, Andrew Lloyd Jr., both of Pittsburg, Kan.; great-grandchildren Amanda Steeley, Brandon Steeley, Leann Weaver, Andy Kustinbass, Cady Jo Lloyd, Cody McCarly, Casey McCarly; sisters Armista Johnson, Yerda Smith, Dorothy Beardal, all of Rexburg, Idaho; and brother Ike Ellis, Idaho Falls.
David was preceded in death by his wife Peggy on May 21, 2001.
Grace F. English

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Monday at English Funeral Chapel, Coeur d'Alene, with burial to follow at Forest Cemetery, Coeur d'Alene.
Grace F. English, 92, Grants Pass, Ore., died Monday, Aug. 18, 2003, in Grants Pass.
She was born Oct. 4, 1910, in Buhl, Idaho, to Myrtle (Whitney) and Ralph Nelson Reed. In 1918, Grace moved with her family from Buhl to Mica Bay on Coeur d'Alene Lake. She graduated from Coeur d'Alene High School in 1928 and attended nursing school at Stanford University.
In 1941, Grace and her husband Donald started English Funeral Chapel at 703 Lakeside Avenue, later moving to 411 Coeur d'Alene Avenue, and, finally in 1962, to the Chapel's present location on Fourth Street. Grace was a homemaker.
She was a member of Seventh Day Adventist Church. A former member of Order of Eastern Star and the Mica Grange, Grace and Donald were active in the Kootenai County Saddle Club. She enjoyed gardening and family gatherings.
Grace is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Edward and Cindy English of Grants Pass, Ore., George and Aleta English, Coeur d'Alene, Bruce and Colleen, Post Falls; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; brother Ralph Reed, Elokia Lake, Wash.; sisters Roberta VanHardenberg, Vancouver, Wash., and Alice Durham, Payette, Idaho.
Grace was preceded in death by her husband Donald C. English on Nov. 16, 1986, and brother Phil Reed on Jan. 3, 2002.

Doug McKay
Douglas M. McKay, 40, was killed instantly Saturday, Aug. 16, at Island County Fairgrounds in Langley, Wash., when he was struck by an amusement ride. Douglas and his wife, Sherry McKay (Sis Anderson) own Paradise Amusements based in Post Falls.
Douglas is survived by his wife of seven years; three children: Travis, Michelle and Kelsey, all of Post Falls; his mother, Kay McKay of Spokane; his brothers, Mark McKay and Wayne McKay; sisters Eva Andrews, April McKay Arnold and Beth Coulton, all of Spokane; and many nieces and nephews.
Doug had grown up in the carnival business. His parents were carnival owners. He began selling popcorn when he was 5 years old, having to stand on a milk crate to wait on customers. When his parents retired, Doug and Sherry bought a few rides from them and gradually built their own business and started their own tour. Doug took great pride in his business and worked very hard to make sure his rides were safe and colorful. His crew remembers him as a tough boss who was an exceptional teacher, his wife and children will remember his great love, dedication for his work and his great smile. He will be missed.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, Aug. 26, 3 p.m. at Calvary Chapel, 180 W. Clayton Ave., Coeur d'Alene. A reception will follow at the McKay home, 6672 W. Orchard Ave.

Maxine Graham Curtis

Maxine Graham Curtis, 90, died in Hayden, Idaho on Thursday, Aug. 21, 2003.
She was born March 19, 1913 in Cheney, Wash., and was educated in Washington schools. In 1954 she married Asahel C. Curtis, who preceded her in death in 1983.
After over 40 years of teaching, she retired from the Seattle Public Schools in 1975. After her retirement she was a volunteer chaplain at Swedish Hospital for six years. She moved to Coeur d'Alene in 1991.
She was a member of several professional organizations, St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Coeur d'Alene and St. Luke's Guild.
She was an avid reader, enjoyed classical music and drama, and was especially interested in politics, social justice and emotionally disturbed children.
She is survived by two step children, Beverly Finley and Lee Curtis; three great grandchildren, sister Margaret Mann and brother-in-law Howard Mann of Coeur d'Alene; sister-in-law Elva Graham of Medical Lake; two nieces, Lyndell Erwin and Jeanette Branson in Coeur d'Alene; nephew Gregory Graham of Spokane; several grand nieces and nephews, great grand nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Norman Graham, in 1994; two grandchildren, Lyle Curtis and Denise Castenda and niece Gretchen Graham.
Viewing will be on Tuesday, Aug. 26 from 10 a.m. to noon at English Funeral Chapel, Coeur d'Alene.
Memorial services were 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2003 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 501 Wallace Ave., Coeur d'Alene. Entombment was at Washelli Cemetery in Seattle.
Adam M. Anderson
December 9, 1926 ~ August 20, 2003
Adam M. Anderson, 76, Post Falls, died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2003 in Spokane, Wash.
He was born December 9, 1926 in St. Paul, Minn., the son of John and Mary G. (Folmer) Anderson. On August 12, 1963, he married Kathryn Twitchell in Las Vegas, Nev. He served with the Marines during WWII.
A 29 year resident of North Idaho, Anderson was one-quarter Ojibwa Indian. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and his dogs. He was a bus driver for the Post Falls School District for 25 years.
Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Kathryn, at home; son John A. Anderson of Seattle, Wash. and grandson, Jeremy Anderson, also of Seattle.
Memorial services were Wednesday, Aug. 27 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Post Falls.

Ronnie Sailor
June 10, 1964 ~ August 25, 2003
Ronnie Allen Sailer, 39, Post Falls, passed away Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, at Kootenai Medical Center in Coeur d'Alene.
He was born June 10, 1964, in Van Nuys, Calif., and grew up in Southern California. Ronnie was a Boy Scout and earned the rank of Life Scout.
In 1990, he moved with his family to Coeur d'Alene, where their fourth child was born, joining three other children. Ronnie worked in the towing industry most of the time.
He leaves behind his sons Bryan Sturdy and Justin Sailer; daughters Crystel and Jessica Sailer; mom and dad, Beth and George Holcomb; and brothers Michael and David Holcomb.
Memorial service will be noon, Sept. 6, at the Rathdrum United Methodist Church, McCartney Street, behind Granny's Pantry.
Constance Coles
April 3, 1923 ~ August 24, 2003
Constance Vivian Coles, 80, Post Falls, passed away peacefully after a lengthy illness on Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003.
She was born April 3, 1923, in Alexandria, Ontario, Canada, to Joseph John and Agnes Mary Mac Donald. She was an elegant and loving lady and will be greatly missed by family and friends.
Constance was an accomplished competition highland dancer and a graduate of Alexandria High School in Cornwall, Ontario, Canada. She went on to train as a registered nurse at St. Mary's Hospital in Montreal and practiced nursing for the next 25 years in the Montreal, Calgary, Spokane and Post Falls areas. She was a Victorian Order Nurse from 1947 to 1950.
Constance moved to Post Falls with her husband in 1960 from Spokane. She was a working partner with her husband in their businesses, Skyview Construction and the Highlands Golf Course in Post Falls. Constance was an active member of the Post Falls LDS 2nd Ward and a charter member of Saint Andrew's Society of Spokane.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother George Mc Donald, sister Elaine Mc Cormick, and sister Shirley Marsolais.
Constance is survived by her husband Robert W. Coles; brother John Mac Donald, Arlington, Texas; son Eric R. Coles (Nancy), Sultan, Wash.; daughter Laurie Hill (husband Paul), West Jordan, Utah; daughter Lee Ann Beeks (Dale), Mt. Vernon, Iowa, daughter Jolaine Marr (Grant), Kennewick, Wash.; and son Jonathan Coles (Lisa); 18 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The family would like to especially thank Constance's many caregivers for their kind and faithful service. They were a tremendous blessing and comfort to her and her family.
Funeral service were Friday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Post Falls. Graveside service and burial was at the Evergreen Cemetery in Post Falls, 2700 N. Spokane Street.
