Norman Terry Riffe of Hope passed away peacefully on Friday, May 2 at the age of 91 in Sandpoint, ID from complications of a stroke on March 1st of this year. He was active and always in great humor up until the time of his stroke. Even after the stroke, he kept his sense of humor and always was asking his visitors, “How are you doing?” as he was more concerned for those around him than himself.
Norman was born March 3, 1917 in Ukiah, California to Lester Lee Riffe and Helen Marie Terry, and was the younger of two siblings Miriam and Fredrick. He grew up in Hollister California, working in the orchards when not in school. As a youth he was an active athlete, participating in football and track and field, especially javelin.
Norman was married to Barbara Annette Anderson, his wife of 67 years, on August 9th 1941 in Berkley California. They met while he was attending the school of engineering at the University of California in Berkley. He and Barbara raised a family of five children in Walnut Creek, California prior to moving to the home in Hope, Idaho.
Norman was an active general partner in Riffe, Shipherd and Jones, a civil engineering firm in the San Ramon Valley, California. The firm played an active part in the growth of the San Francisco bay area after WWII and he retired in 1975 to his home on the Hope peninsula. He enjoyed his season tickets to 49er football games, even those many years that they had losing seasons.
Norman and family discovered Hope, Lake Pend Oreille and the Sam Owen campground in 1955 when on a summer camping tour. It was love at first sight and he purchased property on the end of the Hope point for the family home in 1961. He completed the home on the point in 1965 and was thereafter an active member of the community.
Norman and his dog companions, Spencer, followed by Winchester, were well known to friends as he always came to show and share his rocks and lapidary. He loved to take trips with his rock hounding friends searching and digging for more rocks. He especially enjoyed working his “gemstones” into unique gifts for family and friends.
He was also known as an avid ‘racehorse’ pinochle player and would play as much as possible during the winter, when weather and roads would permit. If he could not play in Hope or Clark Fork, he would host game nights at his home in Hope. Just as in life, he would always find a way to ‘shoot the moon’ on improbable hands.
He always ‘played the hands’ that were dealt to him, even if they were the difficult ones such as the death of his daughters at an early age in life. He was a generous man, always willing to help in moral and financial support to his family, friends and community.
Norman was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara on March 31, 1999; two daughters, Lucinda Lee Wilbur in 1985 and Annette Elizabeth Riffe in 1992; his sister Miriam in 2006 and his brother Fredrick in 1973.
He is survived by his three sons; Larry Tilden Riffe of Sandpoint Idaho, Christopher Terry Riffe of Hope, Idaho and Dana Thomas Riffe of Chattanooga, Tennessee; five grandchildren Michelle Rene (Fullington) Riffe of Sandpoint, Idaho, Shawn Bemis Riffe of Sandpoint, Idaho , Casey Larkin Riffe of Billings, Montana, Megan Atwood Riffe of Sandpoint, Idaho and Jeffrey Wilbur of Seattle, Washington; and great-granddaughters Kyler Lois Healey, Nicole Elizabeth Jensen, and Kira Fae MacLachlan, all of Sandpoint, Idaho.
A memorial service for family and friends is to be held at Norman’s home on Saturday, May 24th at 1 pm. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, donations to be made in Norman’s name to Second Chance Pet Adoptions in Bonners Ferry or the Clark Fork High School Boosters.
The family would like to thank the entire staff of Life Care in Sandpoint for their caring services for Norman’s last two months and all of Norman’s friends who have provided us support and understanding though his final stage of life.
Joy D. Peterson, 57, passed away on Friday, May 9, 2008 at her home in Sagle, Idaho. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, May 16, 2008 at the Whispering Pines Cemetery
on Lakeshore Drive in Sagle.
Joy was born on July 20, 1950 in Peoria, Illinois to Ray and Babe Danielson. She grew up and attended schools in Illinois, Ohio and graduated high school in California. She then attended San Diego State College for two years and then completed a short bookkeeping school. She worked as a bookkeeper for Ford’s airplane division in Newport Beach, CA, a surveying company, and a pharmaceutical company.
On July 1, 1972 Joy married Neil Peterson in Tustin, CA. In 1976 they moved to Atascadero, CA and Joy went to work as a bookkeeper for CTS Keene until 1985. In 1996 they moved to Coeur d’Alene, ID and Joy worked at the public library and the Coldwater Creek call center until 2002. In 2005 they moved into their Sagle home which Neil built himself.
She was a gourmet cook, enjoyed decorating and studying genealogy. She also loved animals especially her Australian Shepards and cats.
She is survived by her husband, Neil Peterson of Sagle, ID and several cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

Susan Lee Lockie, 45, passed away on Tuesday, May 6, 2008 at KMC in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho due to a reaction to chemotherapy.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, May 10, 2008 at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Sandpoint. A reception will follow at the Southside Elementary School, where Sue was a volunteer and worked for many years.
Sue was born on June 1, 1962 in Tucson, AZ to Melvin and Jean McAllister. She graduated from Saugus High School in Saugus, CA. She moved to Sandpoint in 1985 and attended classes at North Idaho Community College.
Sue married Scott Lockie on September 7, 1996 in Spokane, WA and the couple soon had a son, Sheldon. She was a devoted mother and wife. She leaves a legacy of reading to Southside Elementary School, where she implemented the Idaho Reads! VISTA literacy program in which volunteer community members read with students. This is a volunteer program that matches adult readers with students.
Sue was a member of the Southside PTA, Circle and Swing Square Dance Club, and was a committee member for Boy Scouts of America Southside Pack No. 141. Sue loved her home on Cocolalla Lake, she enjoyed yard sales, camping, dancing, and traveling to Hawaii. She was most proud of her son, Sheldon, for whom she fought a courageous battle against cancer. She will be sorely missed.
She is survived by her loving husband Scott Lockie, Cocolalla, ID; son, Sheldon Lockie of Cocolalla, ID; mother, Jean McAllister of Cocolalla, ID; father, Melvin McAllister of Tehachapi, CA; twin sister, Sherry (Bill) Mitchell of Sagle, ID; two brothers, Eric (Emily) McAllister of Plymouth, MI and Steve (Sheila) McAllister of Riverton, WY; nieces Cassie, Sierra and Bailey, and nephew Ben.

Linda “Lynn” L. LaMarche, 54, passed away in Spokane, WA on Thursday, May 22, 2008. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, May 31, 2008 at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Sandpoint with the Rev. Steve Neuder officiating. Burial will be at the Seneacquoteen Cemetery.
Lynn was born on November 21, 1953 in Sandpoint, Idaho, the daughter of Milan and Geraldine (Brooks) LaMarche. She grew up in Sandpoint and attended local schools, graduating from Sandpoint High School in 1972, and then attended the University of Idaho. She was active as a majorette in parades during high school and college.
She married Tom Creason and moved to Las Vegas, working as an executive secretary for the Marina Casino. She returned to Sandpoint and worked for The Fournier Agency as a secretary prior to moving to Spokane, Wa. She worked for the R. A. Hanson Company as a Legal Secretary for 15 years. Lynn worked as a Certified Nurse’s Aide in the Home Health Care field in Spokane, part time secretary for a secretary employment agency and later worked for Dakota Direct.
Lynn loved to help others, was active and involved with family and friends. She enjoyed bowling, the outdoors, fishing, hiking, camping, garage sales, shopping with her friend Rosie, and gardening. She especially was fond of her pet dogs and cats.
Survivors include her brothers, Steve LaMarche (friend Judy Laparie) Sagle, Id. and Tim (Connie) LaMarche of Portland, Or.; aunts, Patsy (Jack) Layton of Morton, Wa and Sue Brooks of Coeur d’Alene, Id; numerous nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by her parents; Milan and Geraldine LaMarche

Katharine “Kay” Curtis Harper, 92, passed away in Sandpoint, Idaho on Wednesday, May 28, 2008. Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 pm, Wednesday, June 4, 2008 at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Sandpoint with Rev. Joel Swartzel officiating.
Kay was born on October 18, 1915 in Bridgeport, Connecticut to Walter and Grace Curtis. She married Tom Harper in 1941 and they moved to Kingston, New York, where Tom was working. They had a son, Donald, and a daughter Marjorie, while living in New York. In 1946 Tom’s job took them to Hagerstown, Maryland, where the family enjoyed living on a farm in the country. In 1951, they move to Long Beach, CA, where their second son, Richard, was born, before finally settling in Garden Grove, CA for the next 23 years.
In 1957 Kay found the job she loved working as the City Clerk for the City of Westminster, CA. In her 21 years of service, she never missed a day of work, and upon retiring, the City gave her $10,000 for perfect attendance. That was pretty amazing considering the many Council, Planning & Zoning, Beautification, and Founder’s Day Meetings that she attended after work every month. The City also recognized her many contributions by declaring February 16, 1971 as “Kay Harper Day.”
In 1978, Kay and Tom retired in Palm Desert to enjoy the desert life of golf, swimming, and tennis, in addition to traveling in their Motor home. To escape the summer heat, they had a place in Big Bear. Kay missed working and volunteered in the Gift Shop at Eisenhower Medical Center and was soon working full-time in the Donations Department at EMC. Kay worked another 10 years and retired again at age 74.
July 2001, Kay and Tom moved to Sandpoint to be closer to their daughter and son-in-law and resided at Alpine Vista for 3 years before moving to The Bridge. Kay loved living at The Bridge, especially when she could dance at the musical socials with her special friend, Jim. Kay’s last two months of her life were spent at Life Care due to a broken hip. Special “thanks” to all the Caregivers and Physical Therapists at Life Care who took such good care of her.
She is survived by her daughter, Marge Keating of Sandpoint, ID; son, Rick (LeeAnn) Harper of Ventura, CA; seven grandchildren; five great grandchildren, and special friend, Jim McCauley of Sandpoint, ID
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Tom Harper, two brothers Stan and Fred Curtis, one son Donald Harper, and son-in-law John Keating.

Shane Kenneth Beebe, 32, passed away on Sunday, May 18, 2008 near Sagle, Idaho due to injuries sustained in a vehicle accident. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm, Thursday, May 22, 2008 at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Sandpoint, viewing will be held from 1-3 prior to the service. A reception will follow. Shane’s father will return his remains to Michigan.
Shane was born on August 11, 1975 in Warren, Michigan to John and Catherine Beebe. He grew up and attended schools in Michigan. Shane attended Oakland University in Michigan for a couple of years. He then met a friend named Ron who mentored him in the decorative concrete business. Shane’s number one priority became specializing in decorative concrete stamping and concrete finish work. His trade took him from Michigan to Colorado and finally to Sandpoint, Idaho in 2005 where he owned and operated Eternal Decorative Concrete. Shane jokingly referred to himself as a real “concrete” guy.
He enjoyed golfing, snowboarding, riding his ATV, sports, Lake Pend Oreille and eating out at good restaurants. Last year he had the opportunity to travel the United States and go on a cruise to Mexico. He is a member of the Concrete Union.
Shane is survived by Anna Buckmaster and her daughters Ashley and Kaley of Sagle, ID; father, John Beebe of Metamora, MI; mother, Cass Tacey of Knoxville, TN; a brother, Ryan (Hillary) Beebe of Clawson, MI; three sisters, Erin (Nick) Pazalli of Dearborn, MI, Aurora and Avalon Tacey of Knoxville, TN and his two dogs Cain and Bambi.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents.
A fund has been established at Mountain West Bank in memory of Shane.
