Dayle Irene Williams
Dayle Irene Williams, 72, retired University of Idaho secretary, died of an apparent heart attack Thursday at Gritman Medical Center in Moscow, Idaho.
She was born April 18, 1925 to Robert and Zoe Metzger Martin in Kalamazoo, Mich., where her father worked in the furnace business. She was raised and attended schools in Kalamazoo, graduating from State High School in 1942. She went to college at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, where she majored in math. Richard Williams was attending school in the same town as part of his Army training. The two met at a USO dance during World War II, and she was promptly led "astray." They were married in Moscow June 12, 1944. She died on their 53rd wedding anniversary.
After their marriage, Richard was stationed with the Army in the Pacific Theatre. During this time, she moved to Santa Monica, Calif., where she worked as a secretary for a local gas company.
He was honorably discharged from the military in 1946 and they moved to Moscow that same year where he enrolled at the University of Idaho School of Agriculture. She was busy being a homemaker and raising their children. He graduated with a master's degree in 1951.
In 1968 she went to work as a secretary for Moscow High School. She held that position for four or five years before working as a secretary at the UI history department. She retired from there in 1987.
She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Moscow, the local chapter of AB PEO, Daughters of the Nile, a Guardian for Job's Daughters Bethel No. 11, and a 4-H leader.
Recently, she helped with the local Meals-On-Wheels program and was a volunteer at the Moscow Public Library. Her hobbies included golf, card games such as bridge and cribbage, and spending quality time with her husband and grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband at their Moscow home; four daughters, Susan Borowicz of Elk City, Idaho, Julianne Thomas of Eugene, Ore., Becki Veal of Dallas and Carol Posluszny of Alden, N.Y.; one brother, Bob Martin of Springfield, Mo.; and 12 grandchildren,
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Short's Funeral Chapel in Moscow. Pastor Gordon Braun, chaplain at Good Samaritan Village in Moscow, will officiate.

Lera A. Mangold
Lera A. Mangold, 92, former Moscow, Idaho, resident, died of age-related causes Sunday in Federal Way, Wash.
She was born Dec. 18, 1904, in Gainesville, Texas, and was reared in New Mexico.
She married Floyd E. Ray in 1934. They moved to Moscow where she worked as a seamstress in a clothing store and raised her family. They were members of the Church of the Nazarene.
In 1958 she married Roy Mangold. He died in 1965. In 1968, she went to live with her daughter, Vivian, and family.
She lived in Glenwood, Ark., from 1975 until March when she moved to Federal Way to live with a granddaughter. She enjoying the company of her nearby family members.
She taught various family members some of her skills in sewing, crocheting, tatting, quilting and baking. She was an avid cook and was known for her honey drop cookies and chicken casseroles. She will be remembered for her perseverance to serve God through trials and tears. James 1:12 is a brief description of her life.
She is survived by two daughters, Frances Plymale of Auburn, Wash., and Vivian Higley of Glenwood; one son, Bob Ray of Kent, Wash.; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Price-Helton Funeral Chapel in Auburn. Pastors J.B. Evans of Glenwood and John Berggren of Auburn will officiate at the service.
A private family burial will be held Saturday in the Moscow Cemetery. Short's Funeral Chapel of Moscow is in charge of the local arrangements.
Nellie E. Clayton
A graveside service for Nellie E. Clayton, 81, a former Genesee, Idaho, area farmer, will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Pomeroy City Cemetery in Pomeroy, Wash.
She died of complications of a stroke May 31 at the Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee.
She was born March 17, 1916, to James H. and Minnie Hagy Wise in Pomeroy where she was reared and educated. After high school, she worked for the Clayton Livestock Ranch in Garfield County.
She married Lauren Clayton Nov. 10, 1934, in Pomeroy. The couple made their home in the Alpowa area of Garfield County until moving to Culdesac, Idaho, in 1943. They bought a wheat farm there and later moved to Genesee to a larger farm.
Upon retirement, they moved to Clarkston, Wash., then to Mann Lake near Lewiston Orchards, Idaho. He worked for McIntosh Farm at Lewiston until his death in 1979.
She then moved to Wenatchee to be near her son and grandson. She worked as a caretaker for elderly people for many years. She had recently moved to the River Valley Home in East Wenatchee.
She is survived by a son, Roy Clayton of Wenatchee, and a grandson.
A brother and two sisters died previously.

Clara C. Knapik Arnold
Clara C. Knapik Arnold, a retired housekeeper and longtime Avon, Idaho, and Pullman, Wash., resident, died of age-related causes Tuesday at the Good Samaritan Village Nursing Home in Moscow, Idaho. She was 85.
She was born Sept. 21, 1911, to Gustave and Theresa Zimmerer Habel in Phillips, Wis. When she was a child the family moved to Potlatch, Idaho, where she started school. She graduated from the Ursuline Academy in Moscow where she was a boarder.
She married Frank W. Knapik March 3, 1932, in Moscow. The couple lived in the Hamilton, Mont., area for a time.
They returned to the area and settled at Avon, near Deary, Idaho. He worked as a farmer, logger and sheep herder. She was a housekeeper for many families in the area for more than 40 years. He died in February 1970.
She married Lloyd T. Arnold in April 1972 at Otis Orchards, Wash.
They made their home in Pullman where she lived at the Kenwood Square Apartments for 12 years.
He died in March 1981 and she continued to live in Pullman until entering Good Samaritan in 1993.
She was a member of the Catholic Church.
She enjoyed crossword puzzles and word-search puzzles, reading and watching television. She was known for her cooking and canning talents and her homemaking abilities.
She is survived by two sons, Frank "Skip" Knapik of Kennewick, Wash., and David Knapik of Moscow; two daughters, Jean Van Dyke and Dorothy Heustis, both of Deary; 13 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were a son, Bill Knapik; two brothers; and three sisters.
Viewing will be until 9 p.m. today at Short's Funeral Chapel at Moscow. A Rosary will be recited at Short's at 7 p.m. today
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church at Moscow with the Rev. Thomas Caswell of Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Pullman officiating. Burial will follow at the Moscow Catholic Cemetery.

Angie S. Brown
Angie S. Brown, formerly of Moscow, died of age-related causes Sunday at a foster-care home in Portland, Ore. She was 89.
She was born Sept. 11, 1907, to Earl C. and Lulu B. Peterson Sawyer in Troy, Idaho. Her father drove a skid team and her mother was a cook at various logging camps around the area. When she was young her family moved into Moscow where her parents worked for the Mix family and later for the University of Idaho. She attended school in Moscow and graduated from Moscow High School.
She married Stanley S. Brown Aug. 15, 1925, in Lewiston. They moved to the farm at the UI where he worked for more than 20 years as a shepherd. The university provided housing for them on the farm. This became increasingly more important to them, as the Depression lingered. She also worked for Moscow Steam Laundry and later as a clerk for Rollefson's Grocery.
In 1934 they bought a farm on Randall Flat near Troy. They raised purebred sheep, Hereford cattle and border collies. After he retired from the UI, they moved to their farm in 1944. They sold the farm 10 years later and moved back to Moscow. She went to work as a bookkeeper for the Latah County Grain Growers and later for Schnell Tractor and Moscow Implement.
Her husband died in 1974. In 1976 she moved to Portland be near her son and his family. She had been living in a foster home there for the past four months.
She was a member of Royal Neighbors Camp 2005 in Moscow, a former Grange member, and a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Moscow. She loved oil painting and was considered an accomplished artist. She also was an avid flower gardener and was known to be an excellent cook.
She is survived by her son Denis Brown of Portland; a brother, Philip Sawyer of Potlatch; a sister Betty Sinclair of Moscow; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
Viewing will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. until service time at Short's Funeral Chapel in Moscow.
Funeral services will be at 2. p.m. Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. James Fisher of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will follow at the Moscow Cemetery.
The family suggests memorials be made to a favorite charity.
May Alice Pratt
May Alice Pratt, 71, a resident of Moscow, Idaho, died as a result of an aneurysm Thursday at St. Joseph Medical Center in Lewiston, Idaho.
She was born May 28, 1925, to Ralph and Gladys Utter Stanfield in Minneapolis. As a young girl she moved with her family to northern Idaho and later to Potlatch where she attended school.
She moved to Walla Walla, Wash., and worked at the Panatorium Cleaners in that town. She later moved to Moscow and went to work for Moscow Steam Laundry, now Green's Cleaners. She went to work at the University of Idaho in 1982 as a cook and worked there until her retirement in 1994. She was an honored staff retiree.
She married Vernon Pratt on Dec. 2, 1972, in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. They made their home in Moscow where Vernon was a fireman and owned Moscow Implement with his brother until his recent retirement.
She loved to hunt, fish and go camping and enjoyed music and playing the organ. She also enjoyed huckleberry picking and going to her daughter's cabin for weekend outings. Her hobbies included sewing, ceramics, gardening, singing and canning fruits and vegetables.
Baptized at the age of 70, her family was the important part of her life and her time spent with them will always be cherished. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She is survived by her husband Vernon at their home in Moscow; one daughter Kay Hanchett of Lewiston; her son Lanny Gustin of Pullman, Wash.; a brother David Stanfield of Los Angeles; a sister Cora Welch of Houston; five grandchildren; and two great-grandsons. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.
Viewing will be at Short's Funeral Chapel in Moscow Saturday from noon to 9 p.m.; Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Monday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The memorial service will be at 11 a.m., Monday at Concordia Lutheran Church in Pullman, 1015 N.E. Orchard Drive with the Rev. Dudley Nolting officiating.
Memorials may be made to the Moscow Volunteer Fire Department.
Alfred James Bolser
Alfred James Bolser, 72, a Deary and Kendrick retiree, died of an apparent heart attack Thursday at his home in Kendrick, Idaho.
He was born Jan. 30, 1925, to Alfred and Mary Jane Howell Bolser in Ferndale, Wash. The family traveled a great deal and he attended schools at several places.
He enlisted with the U.S. Army and served four years during World War II. He was a sergeant in a tank division and was discharged in 1946.
He married Hazel Thompson Davis March 13, 1948, at Newport, Wash. The couple made their home at Spokane, where he worked for Kaiser Aluminum Co. He was a foreman on the tap lines until retiring in the early 1980s after 31 years of service.
The couple moved to Deary in 1980. They moved to Kendrick about 10 years later.
He is survived by his wife at the couple's Kendrick home; a daughter, Marcia Bolser of Spokane; and a sister-in-law, Agnes Neil of Kendrick.
Viewing will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday and Monday at Short's Funeral Chapel in Moscow.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Pinecrest Cemetery in Deary.
