Carol A. Crook, 69, Post Falls, passed Monday, June 30, 2003, at Pinewood Care Center in Coeur d'Alene.
She was born Sept. 11, 1933, to Catherine (Blake) and Norman Messier in Putnam, Conn., where she graduated from Putnam High School. Carol worked as a private secretary to the owner of a local manufacturing company where she worked until moving to California with her former husband and two daughters. Her two youngest daughters were born in California.
Carol married Wayne Crook on June 15, 1985, in San Fernando, Calif. She was employed as administrative assistant at the Sheltered Work Shop in Santa Monica, Calif., and later, as bookkeeper for Atlas Van Lines in the San Fernando Valley. Carol and Wayne moved to Post Falls in 1991.
She loved to read and was an exercise enthusiast. Carol's passion were her love for her Lord Jesus Christ and her children and grandchildren. She was a charter member of Lake City Community Church in Coeur d'Alene.
Carol is survived by her husband Wayne at home; daughters Joyce Preston, Post Falls, Mary Lane, Mission Viejo, Calif., Patricia Fetters, Spokane, Kristine Altherr, Allen Park, Mich.; sisters Norma Enright, St. Petersburg, Fla., Jeanne Blair, Winter Garden, Fla., brother Norman Messier, Eustis, Fla., 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Her sister Joyce Messier preceded Carol in death in 1950.

OBITUARY: Phil Olson
91, former Troy resident
Phil Olson, formerly of Troy, Idaho, passed away his son's home in Oregon City, Ore., on Aug. 21, 2007. He was 91. Phil and his wife, Florence, moved to Oregon in 2004. Florence passed away in 2005.
Phil is survived by his sons, Richard and Jerry of Oregon City; Kenneth of Cold Springs, Nev.; seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Phil was a water-well driller for 48 years in the Moscow-Troy area. He also was a long standing member of the Troy Lions for many year. Remembrances can be made to the Troy Lions.
OBITUARY: Virgil 'Bud' Hibdon
23, Genesee resident
Virgil Eugene "Bud" Hibdon of Genesee died Thursday evening from injuries sustained in an auto accident near Genesee. He was 23.
Virgil was born May 4, 1984, in Sacramento, Calif., to Lonnie and Vicki Hastie Hibdon. The family moved to Kamiah, Idaho, when he was 2 months old. When he was 5, the family moved to Moscow and later to Lewiston. He attended school there, and has lived in Genesee for the past two years. He has worked as a construction worker in the area for the past several years. Bud and Jennifer Luedke were married in Lewiston on March 13, 2003. They have a daughter, Alexa Lynn, who was born in 2003. Bud enjoyed hunting, fishing, 4-wheeling, and dirt bikes and will be remembered for his independence, freely giving of his time and being a friend to all. He was a wrestler in high school and won the state championship in 1997.
Surviving are his wife, Jennifer, and his daughter, Alexa Lynn Hibdon, of Genesee; his father and step-mother, Lonnie and Becky Hibdon, of Harvard; his mother, Vicki Caluya, of Sacramento; his brothers, Levi Hibdon, Christopher, Justin and Eddie Garten; his sister, Tesha Garten; his grandparents, Delbert and Mildred DuPont and Sue Hastie; uncles Ronald Hibdon and Bill Eastman; and nieces Kiana, Jaden and Tristin Garten and Jada Caluya. Also surviving are his many friends. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Harry Hastie and an uncle, Fred Hibdon.
The funeral service will be Wednesday at 4 p.m. at the Genesee Community Church with Pastor George Kemp officiating. Burial will follow at the Genesee City Cemetery. All are invited to the Genesee City Park following the service for a potluck dinner. Memorials are suggested to the Alexa Hibdon Education Trust Fund,

OBITUARY: Joseph Bieker

Joseph P. Bieker passed away Sunday afternoon, June 24. He was an honest man with a firm handshake, was true to his word and had a deep love for his family. He will be missed by many.
Joe was born March 27, 1908, to Joseph H. and Catherine Kinzer Bieker in Sublimity, Ore. His family moved to Ferdinand, Idaho, where Joe grew up and married Henrietta "Etta" Haener. They have been married for almost 72 years.
Having worked at the Lewiston Grain Growers warehouse in Ferdinand for many years, Joe dreamed of owning his own land and becoming a farmer. Joe moved his family to Moscow, Idaho, and farmed just south of town on Paradise Ridge.
Retiring from farming, Joe and Etta moved to Lewiston. Retirement for Joe meant a large vegetable garden, flower beds, the remodeling of a couple homes for his kids, helping two sons start businesses and spending a little time in his shop with the repair of grandchildren's toys and bikes and a little wood working.
Joe is survived by his wife, Etta at the family home; his sister, Julia Bieker of Lewiston; his daughter and son-in-law, LaVonne and Dennis Spence of Clarkston; and his sons and daughters-in-law, John and Terrill Bieker and Marvin and Ella Bieker of Moscow, Ronald Bieker of Milwaukie, Ore., Kenneth and Karen Bieker of Kingston, Idaho, Joe Henry and JoAnn Bieker of Hopkins, Minn., and Dan and Twila Bieker of Lewiston. He also is survived by 22 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Carl, James and Raphael, his sisters Coletta Hough, Marie Lorentz, and Sister Mary Anna Bieker.
The rosary will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. James Catholic Church in Lewiston. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. at the church. Burial will take place at 2:30 p.m. at Ferdinand Community Cemetery.
Uhlorn Funeral Home in Cottonwood, Idaho, is in charge of the arrangements.
OBITUARY: Arthur Helbling
Arthur E. Helbling, 88, of Moscow, in the presence of his family, joined his heavenly father on Friday, Nov. 3, from his winter home in Palm Desert, Calif.
He was born June 24, 1918, in Golden Valley, N.D. to the late Arthur and Clementine Helbling. Arthur attended St. Thomas College in St. Paul, Minn., Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, and Washington State University in Pullman.

OBITUARY: Mary C. Dickinson
Graveside services for Mary C. Dickinson, 81, a resident of Potlatch, Idaho, will take place on Thursday, April 5, 2007, at 11 a.m. at the Potlatch Cemetery. Pastor Kathy Kramer will officiate the service. Mrs. Dickinson passed away Sunday evening at the Aspen Park Healthcare in Moscow, Idaho, where she has made her home since October of 2005.
She was born on Nov. 27, 1925, at Rainier, Ore., to Leon and Violet (Cade) Gore. She attended school at St. Helens, Ore.

OBITUARY: Bessie Beck
Bessie Rae Beck, of Moscow, died Thursday evening at Good Samaritan Village. She was 82.
Bessie was born Sept. 27, 1924 at Provo, Utah, to Johannes Augustus Einer Bjarnson and Sarah Leelyn Hatch Bjarnson. The family moved to San Diego when she was an infant. She grew up and attended school, and graduated from high school there.

OBITUARY: Lloyd Wilson
98, Pullman resident
Lloyd Arthur Wilson died Feb. 16 at Avalon Care Center in Pullman from the ravages of old age.
Lloyd was born June 15, 1908, southwest of Genesee in a homesteader’s cabin to Happie Mason Wilson and Milton S. Wilson. When he was small, his parents purchased the farm east of Genesee where Lloyd lived most of the rest of his life. He attended the Summit School in the country and then Genesee High School. He left school when he found he would have to go five years to graduate because he had missed so much school because of having tuberculosis.
He and Nelle Hayden were married in Pomeroy, Wash., on Oct. 29, 1931, where they had gone on the ruse of selling a load of potatoes and came back to Genesee, not telling anyone they were married. About a month later, a young Genesee woman read the marriage notice in an out-of-town paper, so their secret was out and they moved to a rented farm south of Genesee. While living there, their family was enlarged with the birth of first Iris, and then Phyllis. When Lloyd’s father died in the mid-1930s, Lloyd and his family moved to his parent’s farm east of Genesee. A few years later, Lloyd and Nelle’s son, Merle, came on the scene.
Lloyd’s life was farming and later enlarged his operation to include polled Hereford cattle. His herd increased to about 250 head when brucellosis was found in the herd, so he had to start over. He rebuilt his herd and, because a lot of his heifers died with their first calf, he bred his polled Hereford heifers to Longhorn bulls so the calves would be smaller and the heifers would live through the calving. He was named Cattleman of the Year in the 1960s.
He and Nelle both enjoyed riding horses and they were among the first people who organized the Genesee Rim Riders Saddle Club. Lloyd continued riding into his 90s and was honored by the saddle club for his involvement in 2002. He made the trail ride to Joseph, Ore., from Clarkston twice in his 80s. Lloyd watched his daughter, Iris, learn to downhill ski and, when he was 66, decided that it looked like so much fun that he ought to do it too. He skied until he was 89, and you could always tell it was Lloyd skiing down the hill because of the cowboy hat he wore. He never lost his hat, much to the amusement of the other skiers.
He was also active in the Genesee Christian Church, as were his parents, and later the Genesee Community Church, helping build the new church building. He taught Sunday School for many years and was also an elder, as well as serving on many committees and boards for the running of the church.
Lloyd was also an active member of the Genesee Union Warehouse Company following in the footsteps of his father. He served many years on the board of directors for this facility.
After Nelle died suddenly in 1981, he continued farming, but sold the cattle. He farmed until he was 89, then he rented out his farm land. He moved to Good Samaritan Village in Moscow in 2000 and then to Avalon Care Center in Pullman in 2006. His parents, his brother, Frank, his wife, Nelle, his daughter, Phyllis, and great-grandson, Dirk Dalton, preceded him in death. He is survived by his daughter, Iris Manning (Royce), of Pullman; son, Merle Wilson (Terri), of Quincy, Wash.; son-in-law, Jerry Hines, of Lewiston; granddaughters Laura Lee Clark (Ken) of Moscow, and Marie Stocking (Doug) of Lewiston; grandsons Jim Hines of Lewiston, Mark Hines (Teri) of Portland, Ore., Galen Qualey (Helen) of Vancouver, Wash., Seth Wilson of Phoenix, Ariz., and Cody Wilson (Stephanie) of Quincy; great-grandsons Aaron Clark, Sean, Beau and Kyle Hines, Reece Qualey, and Tyler Qualey; great-granddaughter, Gianna Hines; and great-great-grandson, Luke Hines. He also is survived by a step-grandson, Neil Manning (Becky), and step-granddaughter, Kathryn Walker, and step-great-granddaughters Kasey and Annie Manning, and Kristine Walker. He was a gentle man and loved his family and was loved by them. He will be missed.
Funeral arrangements are in charge of Short’s Funeral Chapel in Moscow. Memorials may be given to the Genesee Community Church or to the Rim Rider’s Saddle Club. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
OBITUARY: Janet Newsome
87, Moscow resident
Mary Janet Newsome passed away Thursday, Feb. 1, at 8:50 a.m. at Gritman Medical Center in Moscow from age-related causes.
Janet was born Jan. 10, 1920 in Montesano, Wash., to Ida Mary and John H. Kirkwood. She grew up in Montesano and graduated from Montesano High School in 1938.
During the war years, she resided in San Diego, Calif., where she worked in the airplane factories. In San Diego, she met a handsome sailor on leave, E.B. “Jimmy” Newsome and they eventually married on June 11, 1944. He preceded her in death in January of 2005.
She was a devoted wife to Jimmy and mother to her two children, Teri and Kirk. She loved her many pets, with special fondness for her cats. Janet enjoyed sketching, painting and reading for most of her life. She was a homemaker, whose favorite place was her home, which her brother designed. She and Jimmy were fortunate enough to have traveled to many places including Ireland and the United Kingdom during their time together.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father and a brother, Charles “Tod” Kirkwood. Her son, Kirk, died in 1979, and her husband, Jimmy, died two years ago. She is survived by her older brother, retired Judge J.H. Kirkwood of Montesano; her daughter, Teri Newsome of Moscow; five grandchildren, Jill Gossage of Phoenix, Ariz., Sean Eugene of San Antonio, Texas, Jenni Newsome of Moscow, Beau Newsome of Moscow and Denis DeMonte of Moscow; and five great-grandchildren.
The family is grateful to the medical staff at Gritman Medical Center, Intensive Care Unit, who provided Janet medical care at a very difficult time in a caring, sensitive and professional manner.
The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 9, 2007, at Short’s Funeral Chapel in Moscow. Rev. Joseph Schmidt will be officiating. Burial will follow at Moscow Cemetery. Visitation will be 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be sent to any charity specializing in the care of animals, especially the Humane Society of the Palouse.

OBITUARY: Maud Hall
89, Clarkston
Maud Hall of Clarkston went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2007. She was 89.
Maud was born April 8, 1917, to William T. and Lilly V. French at Moscow. She lived there until she was 6 years old, when the family moved to Lewiston, where she attended the Lewiston Orchards School for two years. They moved to Moscow where she attended the Collins School Northwest of Moscow for one year. The family then moved to Viola where she attended the Mountain Gem School, graduating from eighth grade. She graduated two years later from the Viola two-year high school.
Maud married Ira W. Hall July 3, 1936, at Moscow. She was a homemaker raising her family. She was very much loved by her family and others she met.
She was an excellent cook and worked at Washington State University from 1956 to 1961 at Davis-Wilmer. From 1961 to 1969 she cooked for the Pullman School District, and from 1969 to 1979 she was a cook at the Alpha Kappa Lambda fraternity.
In 1979 Maud and Ira moved to Clarkston to retire. In Clarkston, Maud cooked for the senior citizens for nine years, retiring in 1991.
Her hobbies included cooking and baking,embroidery work, gardening and flowers and playing pinochle. She also made quilts for each of her children and grandchildren.
Maud is survived by her son, Frederick Hall and wife, Eileen of Moscow; daughters Beverly Gibbons of Moscow, Pearl Echols and husband, Harvey of Pullman, Doris Forsman of Richland; sisters Mabel Wheeler of Colfax, Lillian Gibbs and Mary Eaton, both of Spokane, and Virginia Wetherelt of Columbia Falls, Mont.; brothers Ben French of Deer Park, Wash., and Robert French of Marysville, Wash.; 15 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, 12 great-great- grandchildren; numerous step-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by Ira, her loving husband of 67 years; her 7-month-old son, Darrell I. Hall; her parents; brothers, Walter, Richard, Dan and Roy French; sisters, Caroline Wiebe, Mollie Quist, Edith Burton and Frances Schultz.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Merchant Funeral Home in Clarkston. The funeral is at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, followed by burial at Vineland Cemetery in Clarkston.
