Ethel Mae Saputski, 80, of Rathdrum died Saturday, June 14, 2003 at home.
She was born April 24, 1923 in Butler County , Penn. , to George W. Gilliland and - Ruth A. Kennedy.
Ethel grew up in Butler County , and on Feb. 15, 1947 married Anthony Walter Saputski. They moved west coming first to Post Falls , then to Hayden Lake . They moved to Rathdrum in 1979.
She was a certified nurses assistant at the Coeur d'Alene Homes for 17 years and also at the Coeur d'Alene Convalescent Center ( Ivy Court ) before retiring in 1981.
She enjoyed gardening, canning, sewing and crocheting.
Ethel is survived by her husband, Tony, at home; sons Ronald Gilliland, Butler, Penn., and Dale Saputski, Rathdrum; daughters Donna Timmons, Post Falls, and Mary Saputski, Rathdrum; brothers Clarence, Louis and John Gilliland, Butler, Penn.; sister Helen Byers, Philadelphia, Penn.; 13 grand- children and 14 great-grand- children.
She was preceded in death by son David, three brothers and one sister.
Mildred King Finley
September 23, 1912 ~ June 15, 2003
Funeral services were Thursday June 19, 2003, at the English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d'Alene, ID. Burial followed at Forest Cemetery.
Mildred King Finley, 90, passed away Sunday, June 15, 2003.
Born Sept. 23, 1912, to Jay Monroe and Inga (Odland) King in Newark, S.D., Mildred came to North Idaho with her family at the age of 10. She graduated from Coeur d'Alene High School and attended Trinity Lutheran Church since 1923.
Mildred was in ill health all her life. Even so, she graduated from Puget Sound University with a bachelor of arts degree. She also graduated with a master's in library science from University of Southern California.
She was in public education for 42 years and was an administrator in charge of elementary school libraries most of that time.
Mildred became a world traveler during her working years and brought back presents and artifacts from her many journeys.
After her retirement, she became a stand-up comedian and lived the last few years in safety at the Birch Residential Care Center in Coeur d'Alene.
Mildred was instrumental in organizing the Washington State Library Association. She was active in the Kootenai County Retired Teachers Association, belonged to the Kappa Phi Sorority at Puget Sound University and Omicron Chapter of Phi Delta Gamma at University of Southern California.
Mildred sponsored several needy children around the world and was devoted to the caring of three boys adopted into the family. They are her only family survivors -- Jon Jay King, Thomas William Hebert and Kenneth Roger Hebert. She is also survived by her good friend Janet Hayes, nieces Kathleen Ann Hebert and Katherine Marie Hebert.
Her parents and only sister Eunice King Hebert proceeded her in death.
Mildred wished that memorials be donated to the elementary school libraries or Trinity Lutheran Church, 812 N. Fifth, Coeur d'Alene ID 83814.
Ruth S. Peery
May 14, 1913 ~ June 15, 2003
Funeral Services were Thursday June 19, 2003, at the Community Presbyterian Church in Post Falls, ID. Burial followed the services at the Evergreen Cemetery in Post Falls.
Ruth S. Peery, 90, Post Falls, passed Sunday, June 15, 2003, at home.
She was born May 14, 1913, in Eckman, N.D., to Kaia (Sunstad) and Thorvald Olson. Ruth graduated high school at Concordia College in Moorehead, Minn.
On Sept. 20, 1930, she married Charles E. Peery in Borup, Minn. They moved to the west in 1942 and to Post Falls in 1944. Ruth worked in the post office and city library in Post Falls during the 1940s. She graduated from Eastern Washington University with a bachelors in education. Ruth worked as a librarian for the Post Falls School District and retired in the 70s.
She was a member of Community Presbyterian Church for 54 years and enjoyed reading, crocheting and spending time with her family.
Ruth is survived by her son Ed Peery of Post Falls and Stanley Peery, Selma, N.C.; daughters Mary Lou Weese, Wellsbury, W.Va. and Carol Doty, Post Falls; 17 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1992, daughter Pauline Peery in 1933, son Byron Peery in 1977, two brothers and three sisters.
Harold H. Hoffman
June 13, 1910 ~ June 17, 2003
Graveside services were Saturday June 21, 2003, at the Westmond Cemetery in Westmond, ID. Visitation was at the English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d'Alene, ID.
Mr. Hoffman, who was born in Ashley, N.D., died Tuesday.
He married Stella Schliep in 1931, and the couple lived in Boise.
He worked as a forklift operator for a grocery warehouse in Boise and also was a farmer until moving to Careywood in 1972.
Mr. Hoffman was a volunteer at the Careywood post office and a member of Careywood Church of God.
His wife died in 1998.
Survivors include three children, Ronald Hoffman and Marilyn Shreffler, both of Careywood, and Janet Marcum of Meridian, Idaho; two sisters, Emily Ladd of Ellendale, N.D., and Esther Erwin of California; two brothers, Alvin Hoffman of Roseburg, Ore., and Ellis Hoffman of Camas, Wash.; 10 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
Charlotte C. Stephenson
April 22, 1913 ~ June 18, 2003
Viewing hours were Saturday, and funeral services were Monday June 23, 2003, both at English Funeral Chapel, Coeur d'Alene. Burial at Coeur d'Alene Memorial Gardens will follow the service.
Charlotte C. Stephenson, 90, Dalton Gardens, died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at LaCrosse Health and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born April 22, 1913, to Sarah Sanders (Blaine) and William Northway in Rathdrum, where she was raised. Charlotte was married to Fred L. Stephenson, who preceded her in death on Jan. 9, 1978. She was a homemaker and lifelong area resident.
Charlotte was a member of Seventh Day Adventist Church in Coeur d'Alene and enjoyed gardening.
Survivors include her sons Fred Stephenson of Coeur d'Alene and Irving Stephenson, Post Falls; eight grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband Fred, Charlotte was also preceded in death by her son Burt in 2002, brothers Ervy, Claude, Harry and Hurley, and sisters Edna, Minnie and Maude.
Viewing hours will be 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, and funeral service will be 10 a.m. Monday, both at English Funeral Chapel, Coeur d'Alene. Burial at Coeur d'Alene Memorial Gardens will follow the service.
Marcelline V. Carr
September 3, 1925 ~ June 22, 2003
Private service for Marcelline V. (McKinney) Carr, 77, will be held at a later date.
Mrs. Carr, who was born in Beloit, Ohio, died Sunday.
She worked as a licensed practical nurse in a hospital .
Survivors include her husband, Arthur, and five children.
Arthur W. Hallam
July 22, 1929 ~ June 21, 2003
Private service for Arthur W. Hallam, 73, will be held at a later date.
Mr. Hallam, who was born in Madison, Wis., died Saturday.
He was a Navy veteran.
In 1949 he married Peggy Davenport .
He and his wife lived in Colorado and owned Pagosa Springs Telephone Co. until moving to the Hayden area in 1966.
He was manager for General Telephone and also worked as a road commissioner for Lakes Highway District.
Mr. Hallam enjoyed traveling.
Survivors include his wife ; a son, Steven Hallam of Barron, Wis.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

George E. Wood, D.D.S.
May 29, 1918 ~ June 25, 2003
At George's request no services will be held.
Dr. George E. Wood, 85, passed Tuesday, June 25, 2003 , in Spokane . He was in poor health for several years and on continued oxygen the last three to four years.
George was born in Coeur d'Alene May 29, 1918 , to Margaret (Thomson) and John T. Wood, M.D. He had a sister who died in 1918.
Surviving him is his brother, Dr. William T. Wood of Coeur d'Alene . Also surviving are his daughters, Chris Ann Gain, Connie -Law and Carla Wood, and three grandsons.
George was educated in Coeur d'Alene and graduated from Coeur d'Alene High School in 1935. He went to, University of Idaho , then graduated in 1939 from University of Minnesota , from where he also received a degree in dentistry in. 1942. He married jean Fisher in Spokane in 1943.
During World War II, George served in the Army Air Corps until 1945. In 1947, he received his advanced degree in children's dentistry from University of California at San Francisco . George was the first children's dentist in Spokane and his practice spanned the period 1948 to 1985.
A prolific writer of the early history of Coeur d'Alene and North Idaho, George's last book, "Days of Freedom, a Coeur d’Alene Boyhood," was published in 2002. He was past president of Spokane Dental Society and Washington State Dental Service Corporation.
Lewis D. Robinson
October 11, 1919 ~ June 27, 2003
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Evergreen Cemetery, Post Falls, with American Legion Post 143 officiating.
Lewis D. Robinson, 83, Post Falls, passed Friday, June 27, 2003, at LaCrosse Health and Rehabilitation Center in Coeur d'Alene.
He was born Oct. 11, 1919, in Fleeton, VA., to Lewis and Annie (Haynie) Robinson. He married Edith I. Robinson in July, 1944, and served with the U.S. Navy.
Lewis moved to North Idaho from, California nine years ago. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Dalton Gardens, a Mason, and enjoyed hunting.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Edith Robinson, at home; sons Lewis Charles Robinson, Anaheim Hills, Calif., Edward Lewis Robinson, Post Falls ,
Charles Warren Robinson, Saugus, Calif., and Robert 'Robbie" Alan Robinson, Hayden Lake; sister Estelle Englund, Harleysville, Penn., and six grandchildren.
Emil J. Kulhanek, Jr.
June 28, 1925 ~ June 30, 2003
Funeral Mass will be 11:00 A.M. Tuesday July 8, 2003, at St. Thomas Catholic Church, 919 Indiana Ave, Coeur d'Alene, ID. Rosary will be Monday July 7, 2003, at 7:00 P.M. at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d'Alene, ID. Visitation will be Monday from 9 - 5 P.M. at the English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d'Alene, ID.
Emil J. Kulhanek, Jr., 78, Coeur d'Alene, passed Monday, June 30, 2003, at Kootenai Medical Center.
He was born June 28, 1925, to Mildred (Novotny) and Emil J. Kulhanek Sr., in Kewaunee, Wis., where he graduated from Kewaunee High School in 1943.
During World War II, Emil served with the Navy from 1943-46 aboard the troop/transport U.S. General A.E. Anderson.
On Dec. 31, 1949, he married Birdie Blahnik and they moved out west, where Emil attended the University of Montana at Missoula. He studied forestry and worked for the Forest Service until he retired in 1981, after 30 years of service.
After his retirement, Emil especially enjoyed rebuilding and modifying classic cars, in particular, his red 1967 Pontiac GTO convertible. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and boating. He was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Coeur d'Alene.
Emil's survivors include his wife Birdie at home; sons Emil J. Kulhanek III, Tustin, Calif., John F. Kulhanek, Coeur d'Alene; daughters Mary Ann DeFrank, Portland; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his sister Alice Webb on Feb. 14, 2003.

Ralph MacDonald
July 30, 1935 ~ June 30, 2003
Ralph G. MacDonald, 67, Rathdrum, died Monday, June 30, 2003, at Kootenai Medical Center in Coeur d'Alene.
He was born July 30, 1935, to Amelia (McKay) and Donald J. MacDonald in Bonners Ferry, where he was raised. In 1953, Ralph enlisted in the Army and served during the Korean War, stationed in Germany. After his discharge in 1956, he returned to Bonners Ferry.
Ralph was married in 1959 to Linda Kelson, from whom he was later divorced. He then married Donna Hatch.
A member of the Teamsters and Operating Engineers, Ralph was a heavy equipment operator and truck driver and also worked several logging jobs in the northwest. He belonged to the Western Rodeo Association, Idaho Rodeo Association and Montana Rodeo Association. Needless to say, Ralph enjoyed bare back riding and bull riding rodeos and has many rodeo tales he loved to share. He also enjoyed traveling and the outdoors.
Ralph is survived by his wife, Donna; children from his first marriage -- Raymond, Kelly, Windy, Debbie, Jamie and Donald; other children -- Roy Berlinghoff, Rene Spain, Rhonda Wright, Denise Gerza; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brothers Alan MacDonald, David James MacDonald, Dan MacDonald, Kenneth MacDonald; sisters Doris Ellen Howard, Donalda Jean Howard, Catherine Annie Ritz, Jessie Alice Schlener, Ruth Mariam Hoglan; and numerous nieces and nephew:
Ralph was preceded in death by his parents and brother William John MacDonald.
A friend to everyone, Ralph never met anyone he didn't like, nor did anyone who met him not like him.
Memorial service will be held at a later date. English Funeral Chapel, Post Falls, is in charge of arrangements.
