Everett Jarstad

Cecil Everett Jarstad, 80, Coeur d'Alene, died Tuesday, April 15, 2003 , at home.
He was born June 27, 1922 , in Wolf Point Mont. , to Ingebor (Evenson) and John Jarstad. Everett moved in 1947 to North Idaho from Flaxville, Mont. On Jan. 9, 1948 , he married Bessie (Bea) Hellickson in Scobey, Mont.
Everett worked at Kaiser Aluminum a few years, and then was a letter carrier in Coeur d'Alene for 25 years. He retired in 1979.
Everett enjoyed fishing, woodworking, furniture refinishing, garage sales, drinking coffee with friends and the love of family. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Coeur d'Alene.
Survivors include his wife Bea at home; son and daughter-in-law Barry and Diane Jarstad, Coeur d'Alene ; daughter and son-in-law Beverly and Fred DeSomma, Post Falls ; and grandchildren Chris and Amanda.
Memorial service were held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 812 N. Fifth St , Coeur d'Alene, ID 83814, where contributions may be sent.
Douglas Cherry
In memory of my beloved son Douglas Dean Cherry, 61, who passed away April 17, 2003, at his home in Athol, with his best friend Virgene Rade by his side.
Doug has brothers Wallace and Alfred and sister Viola.
Doug has born in Yakima, Wash., to Violette (Garrison) and Frank Cherry on Sept. 8, 1941. He spent a few years in Yakima and Hermiston, Ore., then moved to Post Falls in 1949. He graduated from Post Falls High School and fought in the Vietnam War.
He had a lot of good friends in Post Falls. He will be missed.
We love you -- your mom, Violette Cherry.
Gene Lino Tomada
Gene (Duke) Tomada, 77, Athol, died Tuesday, April 22, 2003, at home in Athol.
He was born July 21, 1925, in Gallup, N.M., to Italian parents Marina (Zatto) and Sam Tomada. On April 7, 1973, Gene married Betty Bowles in Napa, Calif. He was a shop supervisor for 28 years for International Harvester in Richmond, Calif. They moved to North Idaho from California in 1981.
Gene was a member of the Masonic Temple in Spirit Lake and Rathdrum Scottish Rite.
Survivors include his wife Betty at home; son Michael Tomada and stepson Lester D. Lake, both of Vallejo, Calif.; daughter Tandee Dinwiddie, Oregon Town, Calif.; stepdaughters Sandra Eileen Hernandes, Citrus Heights, Calif., Carol Ann Pearce, Grove, Okla.; two half-brothers and three half-sisters; several grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Memorial service were held Saturday April 26, 2003, at Methodist Church, Highway 54, Athol.
Lauren Jared Walters

Lauren Jared Walters, 41, Coeur d'Alene, died Wednesday, April 23, 2003, in Libby, Mont.
He was born May 18, 1961, in Salem, Ore., to Katherine (Ridenour) and Bill Padgett. For 20 years, Lauren lived and worked in Spokane, where he was a machine operator for Big Sky Industrial. He moved to North Idaho in 1992, the same year he married Kathy Wandler on June 13 in Rathdrum.
Lauren is survived by his wife Kathy at home; father Bill Padgett, Kalispell, Mont.; sister Debbie Allen, Coram, Mont.; mother- and father-in-law John and Alma Wandler, Post Falls; brothers-in-law Dave Wandler, Post Falls, Dan Wandler, Sagle, Jim and Linda Wandler, Sandpoint; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother Katherine Padgett.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Evergreen Cemetery, Post Falls. English Funeral Chapel, Coeur d'Alene, is in charge of arrangements.
Florence Schmitt

A celebration of the life of Florence H. Schmitt, 81, will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Heritage Place Chapel, 704 W. Walnut Ave., Coeur d'Alene. English Funeral Chapel, Coeur d'Alene, is in charge of arrangements,
Mrs. Schmitt died Jan. 22, 2003, in Coeur d'Alene. She was born April 29, 1921, in Sheridan, Mont., to James and Viola (Adams) Hadzor. In 1937, the family moved to Butte, Mont., where Mrs. Schmitt graduated from Butte High School in 1940. She began her clerical working career in Butte, holding many such jobs throughout the years.
In 1950, she married John F. Schmitt and they moved to St. Maries. She worked alongside her husband in the management of the Carney Pole yard in St. Maries. In 1963, the family moved to Coeur d'Alene, where she and her husband purchased a local beer distributorship. After her retirement, Mrs. Schmitt moved to Post Falls.
She enjoyed working as nanny to friends and family members. She enjoyed sewing, needlecraft, playing bridge and spending time with her friends and family.
Mrs. Schmitt was preceded in death by her husband, John, her parents and brothers Francis and Howard Hadzor.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law Nancy and Tim Ingalls of Post Falls; grandchildren John and Katrina Ingalls, Post Falls; brother and sister-in law Leonard and Ruth Hadzor, Boise; sister, Bessie Rule, Butte; sister-in-law Marion Hadzor, Billings, Mont.; and many nieces and nephews.

Dylan Martin Tollackson

Dylan Martin Tollackson, born November 21, 1996 in Coeur d'Alene , ID , died April 27, 2003 at the age of 6, in a tragic four-wheeler accident in Rathdrum , ID. -
Dylan was a creative, precocious little boy who loved many things in life. He loved playing with his sister, Brianna, friends, and his dog, Sandy . Dylan loved playing t-ball and ice hockey, and roller-blading and riding his bike with his friends. Dylan loved the outdoors and liked camping at Farragut State Park and attending summer camp at Ft. Flagler State Park in Washington . Dylan also loved fishing, sledding, playing at lakes
and the salt water.
Dylan attended two years of preschool at Falls Christian Academy and was currently a first grader at John Brown Elementary School in Rathdrum , ID.
His parents, Scott and Kristie Tollackson and his sister, Brianna of Rathdrum, ID, survive Dylan. His grandparents, John and Lyn Tollackson of Mesquite , Nevada , and John and Judy Bergvall of Olympia , WA also survive him. Also surviving Dylan are his uncle and aunt, Ron and Jona Tollackson and 5 cousins of Waterville, WA; Uncle and Aunt, Rick and Heidi Tollackson and 3 cousins of Henderson, Nevada; Uncle and Aunt, Paul McFarland and Laurie Bergvall of Anacortes, WA; and Uncle David Bergvall of Longview, WA.
Funeral services for Dylan were held Thursday, May l, 2003 at 3:30 p.m. at the English Funeral Chapel at 1133 N Fourth Street , in Coeur d'Alene , ID. Graveside services will be held following the service at the Rathdrum Cemetery .
Frederick Clifford Kaphingst
February 28, 1924 ~ April 28, 2003
Frederick "Fred" C. Kaphingst, 79, entered into glory Monday, April 28, 2003, at the family home.
Born Feb. 28, 1924, in Los Angeles, to George and Viola (Wallner) Kaphingst, Fred grew up in the northern California area. He joined the Army at age 17, taking an early graduation from high school to fight for his country during World War II.
Prior to going overseas, while stationed at Fort Drum in Watertown, N.Y., Fred met the love of his life, Shirley Pickett. They were married in 1946, after Fred completed his tour of duty on the European front, fighting in northern France, Africa, Central Europe, the Rhineland and in the Middle East. While overseas, Fred distinguished himself on the battlefield, fighting in the invasion of Normandy and by earning the Gold Medal of Greece for Bravery, the National Service Defense Medal and its Oak Leaf Cluster. He also served in the Korean War.
After 24 years of military service, Fred retired and began a second career. He earned a degree in law enforcement at North Idaho College, becoming only the second member in his family to earn a college degree. His years of public service included positions at the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office and Assessor's Office and, for seven years, he was the animal control officer for the city of Coeur d'Alene. Fred retired in 1987.
Fred's interests included woodworking and coffee clutching with his buddies at Denny's and the Village Pantry. The majority of his time was spent lavishing love on his bride of 57 years, "Chick," and his beloved children, grandchildren and nephews.
Fred was his family's hero as a "jack-of-all-trades" and a man of true integrity. Known throughout the community as a generous individual, he never lost his sense of humor or the opportunity to tease and joke with everyone around. Fred's charming smile, jovial laugh and loving heart will be sorely missed by family and friends alike. In the last months of his life, Fred gave his life to Jesus and is now enjoying the fullness of life in Heaven with his Lord.
Fred is survived by his wife Shirley at home; daughters and sons-in-law Margie and Dale "Pete" Peterson, Bonners Ferry, Tammy and Tony Bray, Hayden; grandchildren Trisha Saterfiel, Sarah Farmer and Pfc. Aaron Bray; nephews Mark Cook and Glen Cook; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son, Michael F. Kaphingst, mother and father Viola and George Kaphingst, sister Sally Cook, nephew Stephen Cook and infant brother Gerald.
Funeral service were Friday May 2, 2003 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Coeur d'Alene, followed by military honors at Forest Cemetery. English Funeral Chapel, Coeur d'Alene, is in charge of services.
The family prefers memorials to Hospice of North Idaho, which ministered compassionately to Fred throughout his illness.
Frederick James Moore
April 2, 1928 ~ April 29, 2003
Frederick James Moore, 75, Post Falls, died Tuesday, April 29, 2003, in Coeur d'Alene.
He was born April 2, 1928, in Spokane to Catherine (Swears) and James Moore. Fred attended East Greenacres Elementary School and was the senior class president of Post Falls High School Class of 1946. He served in the Army Air Corps and Air Force during World War II and the Korean War, where he was a radio operator for the 36th Fighter Group, 53rd Bomber Squadron.
On June 3, 1951, Fred married Neva McMinimy in Post Falls, where he was the past owner and operator of Speed Queen Laundry Mat. Fred also retired from Kaiser Aluminum, Trentwood, after 27 years of service.
A past president of the Post Falls Kiwanis Club and Lions Club, Fred was also a member of the cemetery board and American Legion in Post Falls and Coeur d'Alene Water Skiing Club. He was past member of VFW and Eagles. Fred was one of the first participants of the Post Falls Float organization. As a pilot, he enjoyed flying and also like astronomy, snowmobiling, camping, spending time on the Coeur d'Alene River and classic car restoration.
Survivors include his wife, Neva Moore, at home; sons and daughters-in-law James and Judy Moore, Hayden Lake, Christopher and Cynthia Moore, Post Falls; daughter and son-in-law Pamela and Daryl McCurdy, Houston; sister Mabel Keele, Seattle; mother-in-law Alta McMinimy, Post Falls; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Florence, Mary and Violet, and brothers Tom, George, Sid and Garne.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Q'emiln Park, Post Falls. American Legion Post 143 will officiate and a reception will follow.

Eloise G. Olson
November 4, 1904 ~ April 22, 2003
Eloise G. Olson, 98, entered into peace Tuesday, April 22, 2003, at the Kootenai Medical Center Circle of Life Suite, after a brief illness.
Visiting hours will be 9 a.m.-1 p.m. today before the 2 p.m. funeral service at English Funeral Chapel, Coeur d'Alene. Burial at Coeur d'Alene Memorial Gardens will follow the service.
She was born Eloise Gertrude Ward on Nov. 4, 1904, in Prairie du Chien, Wis. Her family moved in 1908 to North Dakota, where they lived in a sod house built by her father.
Eloise attended school in North Dakota and obtained a teaching certificate from Dickinson Normal School. She taught school until 1927, when she married Carl O. Olson in North Dakota, where they homesteaded. In 1936, they came to the Coeur d'Alene area, then moved to Spokane in 1944. Eloise was active in the Spokane Knox Presbyterian Church where she was church secretary for many years, and spent her life serving the Lord.
For the past 14 years, she lived in Coeur d'Alene with her daughter. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Rebekah Lodge and Historical Button Society. Eloise enjoyed growing roses and sharing them with friends and hospital patients. For many years, she won blue ribbons at local fairs for her tatted lace work.
She is survived by her daughter Marian Schenkenberger, grandchildren Gary Schenkenberger and Lori Gessner, all of Coeur d'Alene; 12 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
Eloise was preceded in death by her husband Carl in 1990, brother Ethan Ward, sister Edna Karg, granddaughter Jean Achenbach and great-great-granddaughter Theresa Schenkenberger.
Richard Dansereau
December 21, 1938 ~ May 7, 2003
Graveside Memorial Services will be 11:00 A.M. Friday May 30, 2003, at Forest Cemetery in Coeur d'Alene, ID.
Richard Franklin Dansereau was born on December 21, 1938 in Sioux County , ND to Ted & Alma Umber Dansereau. The family moved to Coeur d'Alene in 1955. As a young man he pursued a career in aviation by earning licensure in Airframe and Powerplant. During his nearly forty years with a succession of airlines, he worked in thirteen cities and retired from Northwest Airlines in Tampa , Florida in 2000. After moving to Florida , he also earned licensure as a Radio and Electronics Technician, Ship's Captain and Private Pilot. He was a member of Church by the Sea in Madeira Beach , Florida and Holliday Isles Elks Lodge No. 1912.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one granddaughter. He is survived by his wife Mary Ann of Treasure Island, Florida, two sisters, Bonnie Pennington of Lynnwood, Washington and Judy Guilidge of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, two brothers, Jerry of Hayden, Idaho and Ted of Spokane, Washington, four children, Scarlet Skorcz of Rock Springs, Wyoming, Rick Dansereau of Coleville, California, Jay and Brenda Dansereau of Spokane, Washington, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Carl Johansen
March 10, 1923 ~ May 28, 2003
Dr. Carl A. Johansen, 80, Coeur d'Alene, passed May 28, 2003, at home.
He was born March 10, 1923, to Dorothy M. (Day) and Carl A. Johansen in Mukilteo, Wash.
Memorial in honor of Carl will be 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Eagles Club, 209 E. Sherman Avenue in Coeur d'Alene.
Carl was the beloved husband of Ruth Johansen and loving father of four children and four stepchildren. He was also grandpa and great-grandpa to nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Carl will be truly missed by family and friends.
Carl was honorably discharged from the Army after serving for three years. He was decorated with the World War II Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with one Bronze Star.
Carl attended Washington State University and earned both his bachelor of science and masters in entomology while there, then went to Cornell University to earn his Ph.D. in 1952. His areas of specialization were bee research, environmental toxicology (bee poisoning), pollination and integrated pollinator and pest management.
Carl traveled extensively both on business and for pleasure. His love for music was widely known and he enjoyed playing his tuba while joining in with family and friends. Both Carl and his wife Ruth were members of the band "The Snake River Six" for many years while living in Pullman, Wash.

Donald Ralph Whaley, Sr.
April 16, 1925 ~ June 10, 2003
Visitation was held at the English Funeral Chapel, Post Falls. Graveside services were held at the Evergreen Cemetery, Post Falls, followed by a memorial service at Calvary Lutheran Church, Post Falls. Rev. Stan Allen officiated at the services.
Donald Ralph Whaley Sr., 78, Post Falls, died Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at Kootenai Medical Center in Coeur d'Alene.
He was born April 16, 1925, to Mable (Lund) and Frank Whaley, in North Kenova, Ohio. Donald served in the Marines. He came to the Coeur d'Alene-Post Falls area in 1981 from Sacramento, Calif. Donald was a Greyhound bus driver for 40 years and retired in 1984.
He was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Post Falls and volunteered with the Kootenai County Fire Department. For 28 years, Donald was a member of Lake City Harmonizers, specifically belonging to the "Fisherman Quartet," a gospel group.
Donald is survived by his sister Louise Bullock of Chillicothe, Ohio; Arlene Clarke of Post Falls, his wonderful companion; great-niece Tamera Laughlin and husband Pat, great-nephew Matthew Bennett, all of Chillicothe, Ohio; great-niece Victoria Coonrod and husband Robert, great-niece Veronica Coonrod, great-nephew Robert Coonrod, all of Charleston, S.C.; nephew Charles Bullock and wife Janet, Eutaw, Ala., great-niece Stacia Wilson and husband William, Boligee, Ala., great-niece Cindy Myers and husband Bill, Garner, N.C.; niece Pamela Prater and husband Harles, Chillicothe, Ohio.
Eugene Paul Zannini, Sr.
February 26, 1916 ~ June 9, 2003

Eugene "Gene" Paul Zannini Sr., 87, went to be with his Lord on Monday, June 9, 2003.
He was born Feb. 26, 1916, the son of Louis D. and Clementina (Pardi) Zannini in Chicago. Gene attended St. Mel's in Chicago, St. Mary's College in Winona, Minn., and Kent Law School in Chicago.
On Nov. 30, 1940, Gene married Eileen Mary Keller, with whom he enjoyed 62 years of marriage.
Early in his career, Gene helped run the family business, the Chateau du 'Jour Restaurant in Waukegan, Ill. He later owned and operated Webb's Boat Service on the Chain of Lakes in Antioch, Ill. He moved to Coeur d'Alene in 1983 following his retirement.
Gene's retirement was filled with visits with family, attending special events in the lives of his children and grandchildren. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and golfer who treasured his time on the water wetting a line, in a duck blind or on the links with family and friends. Gene's favorite hobbies included carving waterfowl, gardening and cooking. He was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church and St. Pius Catholic Church.
Gene's motto in life came from his father who taught him to "remember that we cannot always take from this world, it is more important that you give back." This was evidenced by his many hours of service to the communities in which he lived. Gene was a member of Knights of Columbus, Antioch Lions Club, honorary lifetime member of Rotary International, and the Republican Clubs in both Antioch and Coeur d'Alene.
Whether cooking for a church function or collecting donations for charitable causes, Gene gave the most precious of all commodities, his time. He will be loved and missed by all.
He is survived by his wife Eileen of Hayden Lake; brother Dr. John J. Zannini, Lake Forest, Ill.; sister and brother-in-law Mary E. and Lawrence Ferry, Waukegan, Ill.; daughters and sons-in-law Teddy and Lonny Merchant, Alexandria, Va., Bobbie Peifrey, Fairview Heights, Ill., Cathie and Fred Carrubba, Pleasant Prairie, Wis., Jeanne Norton, Lindenhurst, Ill., Julie and John Ukich, Hayden Lake, Joellen and Jim Kaster, Minneapolis; son and daughter-in-law Eugene "Butch" Jr., and Julie Zannini, Rockford, Mich. Gene was also blessed with 24 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.
