Interment will follow at Hilltop Memorial Cemetery, Nyssa. Condolences may be made to the family at www.shaffer-jensenchapel.com.
An Idaho native, George was known in his community as a successful farmer and avid political enthusiast. Born July 29, 1919, at home near Nyssa, George was the third child of George Rudolph Leonnardias Smit and Alida Kruyt Smit, both formerly of The Netherlands.
After high school graduation in 1940, George enlisted in the Army in February of 1941 and was honorably discharged in December of that same year for medical reasons. After his service, George stayed in the Tacoma, Wash., area finding work as a welder doing his part for the war effort at home. Having saved enough money to buy property at home, he moved back to the Nu Acres area where his parents had homesteaded and bought his first farm and began farming in 1948. During that time, he formed a farm implement company with partners Bob and John Palmer that would in later years become Palmer Equipment Company.
After leaving the partnership in the early 1950s, George concentrated on farming and ranching, but decided in the mid-1960s that row crop farming was his true calling, selling his cattle in order to concentrate on farming. On Nov. 10, 1963, George married Joyce Mitchell, of Nyssa, and was joined by her three children and receiving their only child in November 1964. George's farming career continued to span another two decades until his retirement in 1997 at the age of 78.
After retirement, George traveled to see family and enjoyed many different parts of this country that he loved so much. At home, he busied himself with “staying informed about the political scene” and making sure his coffee buddies knew what his opinions were each afternoon. George lived a long and contented life ending in no regrets. He loved his country and the valley he lived all his life in and was grateful for friends, neighbors and family.
George is survived by his daughter, Melody Smit; his step-daughter, LeRoyce Williams (David); his step-son, Andrew Schlupe (Shirlene); as well as six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Jacob; sister, Ida Gallant; step-daughter, Evelyne Jackson; and ex-wife, Joyce Nelson.
George and his family were very grateful for the care he received from Dr. Andrew Peterson, of Ontario, Dr. William Kreisle and the MSTI staff, of Fruitland, and Dr. Mark Mallory, of Boise.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude's Childrens Hospital, c/o Shaffer-Jensen Memory Chapel, P.O. Box 730, Payette, ID 83661.
There will be a reception following the graveside services, at the Nu Acres Farmeretts Hall at 2391 W. Delmar Ave.
