Howard Wayne Boles
Dec. 11, 1921 - June 17, 2011
Weiser - Howard Wayne Boles, 89, was born Dec. 11, 1921, at Fairview, N.D.
Wayne was one of six siblings born to Harry Frank and Jennie Lula (Stoughton) Boles. The Boles family moved to Newberg, Ore., in 1927 and to the Indian Valley, Idaho, area in 1931.
In 1942, Wayne joined the Army and served for almost three years. His W.W.II tour of duty placed him in Burma, India. He drove transport trucks to moving vital supplies along the infamous “Burma Road” until a shipment of horses and mules arrived. Having been raised around horses plus his special talent riding and training them placed him in charge of the entire horse brigade. After an honorable discharge in 1945, he later married Ellen Marie Nielson at Millville, Utah, in 1947.
This past May 7 was the celebration of 64 loving years with each other. They shared a farming, ranching, and hard-working lifestyle. Working for other ranchers and farmers in the Harper and Homedale areas, they finally settled at Indian Valley, Idaho. Wayne and Ellen lived in Indian Valley for over 28 years on a small farm located along the Little Weiser River where they adopted and raised their four children.
In 1961, Wayne began work with the U.S. Forest Service. He retired in 1983, with more than 21 years of service. Wayne fought many fires, felled timber, burned slash, and planted thousands of trees during his forestry career. Even though he enjoyed the mountains, more important to him was helping and teaching others how to work hard and earn a day’s pay.
In 1989, Wayne and Ellen moved to Weiser, Idaho, to be closer to shopping, doctors and relatives. Wayne enjoyed working in the yard, growing a garden, and working in his shop where he would make wood rocking chairs and household furniture from raw lumber. Wayne also enjoyed traveling.
Together, Wayne and Ellen made several trips back east to his units Army reunions. He enjoyed the Pacific Coast and just taking short trips to the mountains.
Wayne’s community involvement was as a member of the Indian Valley Rural Fire Department, the Community Hall board as well as being on the Indian Valley Cemetery
Board. Wayne worked at the cemetery doing maintenance and lawn care person for several years after his retirement. He also provided shelter and love for more than 90 temporary foster children.
In 2009, Wayne and Ellen were presented with the prestigious Foster Parents Achievement award for dedicating more than 40 years of foster care service. In 1985, Wayne and Ellen were awarded the Distinguished Citizens of the Year by the Council Chamber of Commerce. Wayne was also a member of the American Legion. Wayne was always ready to lend a hand. Countless times helping neighbors, relatives, and communities with anything from haying to building a house. Having only an eighth grade education, his raw, unrefined life-experience talents were many and his down-to-earth way of letting others learn will be missed.
