Marilyn Carol Mollohan, 86, passed away on Monday, September 29, 2008 in Bonners Ferry, Idaho. A Celebration of life will be held on Sunday, October 12, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at the Ace Elder Care Center in Bonners Ferry, Idaho.
Marilyn was born on February 13, 1922 in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of Walter and Blanche (Sadowski) Garling.
She met her husband Kenneth and moved to Southern California in 1944. They had three children, after the children where older she went to work as an accountant for the Long Beach Transit Bus Company and retired after 35 years.
Marilyn moved to Oregon after her husband passed away in 1983 to live with her daughter, Diane, then in 1997 she moved to Bonners Ferry, Idaho to live near her daughter, Pamela. The last 3 years of her life was spent at Ace Elder Care Center, there she was given great care and loving attention.
She enjoyed cooking, gardening, sewing, and going dancing with her husband.
Marilyn is survived by two Daughters, Pamela Mollohan of Bonners Ferry, ID and Diane Chambers of Grants Pass, OR; son, Kenneth Mollohan of Huntington Beach, CA; seven Grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents and husband Kenneth.

Helen A. Johnson, 91, went to be with her Lord Jesus Christ and all His glory on Monday, September 15, 2008 in Sandpoint, Idaho. Memorial services will be held at 3:00 pm, Saturday, September 20th at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Sandpoint with Pastor Steve Nickodemus of Christ Our Redeemer Lutheran Church officiating. A reception will follow at the Lakeview Funeral Home reception area.
Helen was born on November 18, 1916 to Dan and Amelia Zaklan at their farm in the Oden-Sunnyside area. This birth was exceptional because the only people present were mother and daughter. Both of Helen’s parents emigrated here from Yugoslavia in the early 1900’s. She grew up on the farm with her nine other siblings and two best friends Evelyn French and Ethel Johnson. Attending high school during the depression was difficult for farm families and eventually her father pulled her out of school to help with chores and raise her younger siblings. Although she only graduated from the old Oden School, she became a prolific reader all her life. She spoke both Yugoslavian and English.
From 1937 – 1939 she and Ethel worked on a dude ranch in Seeley Lake, MT. During the early part of WWII she came back to Sandpoint to work at J.C. Penny’s and help Evelyn run her restaurant. Later in the war she worked in the Spokane Army Depot supporting troops in Europe and the Pacific. At war’s end she started dating her neighbor and childhood friend Herb Johnson who had just returned from Japan as a prisoner of war. Herb and Helen were married in Libby, MT on June 1, 1946. Herb’s Air force career took them to Tucson, AZ where all three of her children were born and later to Plattsburg, NY. Helen’s family all returned to Sandpoint in 1960 upon Herb’s retirement.
Helen was a loving mother that instilled the virtues of hard work and Christian principles in her children. She was an encourager, a giver and servant to many. She considered others more important that herself. Her passions were nutrition, gardening and sharing the fruits of her labors with family and friends. She loved reading her bible, huckleberring, and swimming in Lake Pend Oreille on hot summer days. She was active in the First Presbyterian Church, The Gideons, and the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary. She welcomed all visitors to her home and provided many wonderful meals, always followed by a walk around the Syringa Heights Loop. Her energy level was amazing even in her final years. She always had a beautiful smile.
On the night before her passing, she carefully packed a small bag of personal belongings and announced that Herb was coming the next day to pick her up, she placed it beside her bed and never woke up. We know they’re enjoying a second honeymoon after 7 years apart. God Bless them both.
She is survived by two sons Gary (wife Diane) and Bruce (and wife Janie) Johnson all from Sandpoint, one daughter Susan (Bill) Reed of Seattle, one brother Stanley of Portland, and two sisters Sophie Guichard of San Francisco and Julie Walhgren of Sandpoint; six grandchildren Dawn and Emily Johnson in Nevada, Megan and Alexa Johnson of Oregon, and Hudson and Elliot Reed of Washington. and caregiver of two years Kristine Lwin.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Herb, and six brothers.

Betty Jean Hutchison, 79, passed away peacefully at home in Sandpoint, Idaho on Friday, September 12, 2008. At her request, there will be no service.
Betty was born on January 7, 1929 in Wallace, Idaho to John and Edith Johnson. She grew up and attended schools in Mullan, graduating from Mullan High School. She went on to receive a bachelor’s degree from the University of Idaho.
Betty married Frank Hutchison in 1956 in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and they lived in Wallace, Idaho; Portland, Oregon and Petaluma, California before retiring to Sandpoint.
She leaves behind her husband Frank, twin brother Tom, sister Elsie, son John (and Susan), daughter Nancy (and Creed) and two grandchildren, Ian and Jane.
Strong and independent, Betty was happiest outdoors. She loved to fish, tie flies, hike and golf with friends.

Darrell Deen Horton, age 56, of Elmira, Idaho, died Thursday, September 4, 2008 at his residence. Funeral services have been held in Coleman, Texas.
Darrell Deen Horton was born June 13, 1952 in San Diego, California the son of Charles Franklin Horton and Charlene Bates Horton Cole. He moved with his family from Olney, Texas to the state of Washington at the age of nine. Darrell served his country in the United States Navy where he armed and disarmed bombs. Following his military service, he worked in Civil Service in Seabeck, Washington. He has lived in Elmira for a number of years, working as a carpenter building log houses. He was a long-time member of the NRA, an avid hunter, fisherman, camper, and hiker.
Survivors include his mother, Charlene Bates Cole of Gouldbusk, Texas; one sister, Shirley Horton Cortez of Gouldbusk, Texas; one niece and one nephew, Stacie Reynolds of Round Rock, Texas and Sam Reynolds of Clovis, NM; aunts and uncles, Lucille Day of Crews, Texas, Jimmy Bates of Dallas, Texas, Mary Jones of Kemp, Texas, Alvin Bates of Silver Valley, Texas and Minnie Chamberlin of Odessa, Texas.
He was preceded in death by two uncles and his step-father, Bill Cole in 2007.

Esther R. “Mona” Thompson, 67, passed away on Sunday, October 19, 2008 in Sandpoint, Idaho. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Thursday, October 23rd at the Lakeview Funeral Home with Pastor Jim Osman of the Kootenai Community Church officiating. A reception will follow at the Lakeview Funeral Home reception area. Burial will be at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Gardens.
Mona was born on to Henry and Lois Volking. Mona’s father was a traveling preacher, so the family moved throughout the United States, while she was growing up.
In 1969, while a member of the Del Rosa Gospel Choir in San Bernardino, Mona helped record an album. In 1974 she became a cosmetologist. Her love of her profession lead to a teaching position at Riverside Community College after graduating from UCLA.
Mona married Billy Thompson on October 19, 1980 in Lake Tahoe. After more than 30 years of living in California, Mona moved to Sandpoint, ID in 1997 to be closer to her family.
Mona enjoyed being a part of the Sandpoint chorus Sweet Adelines. She enjoyed art, cooking, sewing, and singing. Family was the most important thing to Mona. Her caring nature and loving presence was felt by all and transcended beyond the traditional definitions of family.
Mona is survived by her loving husband Billy Thompson of Sandpoint, ID; two sons, Daniel Brown of Syracuse, NY and David (Penny) Brown of Sandpoint, ID; four granddaughters Danielle, Darian, Sunny, and Dariel.; two brothers, Eldon (Dolly) Volking of Post Falls, ID and bDavid (Cybil) Volking of Glendale, AZ and one sister, Mary Thomas of Burney, CA.

Clyde F. Schilling, 82, passed away on Monday, October 13, 2008 in Spokane, Washington. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am Saturday, October 18, 2008 at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Sandpoint. Burial and full military honors will follow at Pinecrest Cemetery.
Clyde was born on June 18, 1926 in Princeton, Minnesota to Frank and Alta Schilling. Clyde moved to Hope, Idaho in the 1940’s. Clyde served his country in the United States Army during WWII. He served in two major battles in the Philippines. In 2006 Clyde received his “Lame Duck” award, for surviving 60 years after WWII.
He married Clara Reed on January 4, 1948 in Sandpoint. Clyde worked on the garbage route in Sandpoint until 1953, when he moved to Wyoming and went to work for Charles M. Smith Construction. In 1963 he moved back to Sandpoint and worked for Joslyn Pole Yard until he retired in 1982. After retiring Clyde helped Melvin Hansen run his sawmill.
Clyde is a member of Aerie No. 589 Fraternal Order of Eagles. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, wood working, and cold beer.
He is survived by his four daughters, Marcella (Bob) Land of Spokane, WA, Marlene Martino of Spokane, WA, Lorraine (Rick) Chapman of Spokane, WA and Twila Adams of Blanchard, ID; two sons, Chester (Debbie) Schilling of St. Maries, ID and Clyde (Vicky) Schilling of Sandpoint, ID; sister, Beverly Morgan of Brainerd MN; two brothers, Ronald Schilling of Thompson Falls, MT and Donald Schilling of Olympia, WA; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Clara, 8 brothers and sisters Ruth, Lorraine, Marcella, Marlene, Robert “Sunny”, Frank “Toad”, Gerald “Sober,” and Kenneth Lindholm.

Werner H. Oppelt, 83, passed away on Saturday, October 18, 2008 at his home in Sagle, Idaho surrounded by family. Memorial services will be held at 3:00 pm, Thursday, October 23rd at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Sandpoint with Pastor Steve Neuder of the First Lutheran Church officiating.
Werner was born on November 27, 1924 in Dresden, Germany to Hermann and Elsa Oppelt. He grew up and attended schools in Germany, and served in the German infantry during WWII. After the war he worked as a police officer on an American military base.
Werner married Mathilde Klassen on December 8, 1946 in Sande, Germany. In 1953 the couple moved to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, where Werner began his career with Safeway as a produce manager. In 1964 the family moved to Monterey, California, and Werner remained with Safeway until his retirement in 1984. Werner and Mia moved to Sagle in 2002 to be closer to family.
Werner was a member of the German rowing club, and the Grand Jury in Monterey, he also served as President of the German American Club in Monterey. He was very artistic and creative and enjoyed cooking, baking, photography, wood working, making wine, playing the harmonica and raising canaries.
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years Mathilde “Mia” Oppelt of Sagle, ID; one daughter, Angela Rast (David Stroud) of Visalia, CA; three sons, Hans (Lee) Oppelt of Seaside, CA, Perry (Linda) Oppelt of Sagle, ID, and Roger Oppelt of Sagle, ID; six grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren; and one brother, Karl-Heinz Oppelt of Germany.
