Leonardo Reyes Portillo - October 4, 1985 - July 16, 2010
ISLAND PARK, ID. — Most people live a long life of adventure, trials and triumph over the space of 70 years plus.
Leonard Portillo somehow crammed ALL of that and more into the young age of 24.
Leonardo Reyes Portillo of Mack's Inn, formerly of the Provo, Utah area, died Friday July 16, 2010 in Island Park, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
He was 24 years old.
He is survived by his best friend and wife Brittany Ellison Portillo, whom he met at a tender age of 14 and three sons, Brennan Burnett, Korben Reyes and Brayden Gage, mother Virginia Ozuna, brother Pablo Ozuna and sisters Valerie and Christina Portillo.
Leonardo was probably the most compassionate and caring person you would ever want to meet.
He was always looking for ways to help others, never expecting anything in return.
He just loved to serve! Last Halloween night at 10:30 p.m. he was helping to clean the church, readying it for the next days service; this came about because someone else had forgotten his commitment.
Winters in Island Park can be brutal.
Leonard would help harvest wood all fall and then continue to keep neighbors and family in chopped and stacked wood through the entire winter.
His motto in life "see a NEED, fill a NEED."
He adored spending time with his family, from coloring with his wife and kids, playing board games and becoming a master at any video game he tired.
He loved to hike, camp, fish and be on the river.
He developed an inner sense of worth and self-discipline through Tai Chi.
Every day on his way home from work he would stop to ask his mother-in-law if there was anything she needed.
He would do the same for anyone.
In today’s hurried place this is a rare quality.
He was a valued employee at Mack's Inn Resort.
Leonard, WE LOVE YOU AND MISS YOU! You have left a big hole to be full filled.
We will honor your life by living ours to the fullest!
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 20 at the Island Park LDS Chapel.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services.
Arrangements are under the direction of Baxter Funeral Home in Ashton.
Janet Cordon Moldenhauer
Janet "Jill" Cordon Moldenhauer, 65, passed away Monday, July 19, 2010, at her home of natural causes. Jill was born Nov. 19, 1944, to Leo and Ida Cordon in St. Anthony. She attended schools in Ashton. After high school, Jill married Steve Pond and was blessed with three children. They later divorced. She married Gary Moldenhauer in 1970, after which he adopted Alan, Robert and Kathy; they were later blessed with a son, Cody.
Jill was employed by Power County Highway District for 30 years, retiring in 2007. Jill's greatest passion was her family; her children and grandchildren. She seldom missed a time when she could watch her grandchildren and their activities. Her other passions were golf, bowling, and spending time with her friends. Jill enjoyed their cabin in Island Park, reading, crocheting, and camping.
Jill is survived by her husband, Gary; her four children, Allen (Lynn) of Glenn Allen, Va., Robert (LeeAnn) of American Falls, Kathy (Houston) Anderson of Pocatello and Cody (Chris) of American Falls; a twin brother, Jack (Pat) Cordon; a sister, Charyl (John) Price; and nine grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, LaRoy Cordon, Gary Cordon and Daryl Cordon; and her parents.
There will be a gathering for friends and family one hour prior to the funeral which will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 22, at the LDS church located at 650 Pocatello Ave. in American Falls. Internment will follow the services at Falls View Cemetery
in American Falls.
Vaughn Rainey dies
Vaughn Alvin Rainey 63, passed away Friday, July 23, 2010 at the Madison Memorial Hospital from complications of diabetes and heart failure.
Vaughn was born December 19, 1946 in Rigby, the son of Alvin Denzel and Lila McIntire Rainey.
He married Ann Willard in l965. Two sons Vic and Brett were born to this marriage. They were later divorced. He later married Evelyn Tschikof Allen on December 19, 1996 in Island Park. They spent the winters in Brenda, Arizona and the summers in Island Park and Newdale. During his life he worked as a carpet installer. He loved to hunt, fish and fly miniature airplanes.
Vaughn is survived by his wife Evelyn of Newdale, sons - Vic (Cory) Rainey and Brett (Tawnya) Rainey, both of Idaho Falls, sisters - Nelda (Dan) Wright and Linda Ritchie, both of Idaho Falls, brother - Alton, (LaRee) Rainey, Rigby; four grandchildren, Besides his parents he was preceded in death by sisters Julia Pettingill and Marlene McNeil.
At his request, disposition was by cremation under the direction of the Bidwell Funeral Home in St. Anthony. a memorial celebration will be held at a later date.
Donald Lamar Loosli
Donald Lamar Looslt was born on November 10, 1915, to Hattie Salisbury and Dimond M. Loosli, Marysville. He passed away in Salt Lake City on Sunday, July 25, 2010, after a life of service to family and faith.
The youngest of nine children, Donald grew up on a homestead near Ashton where the demanding life of fanning taught him to be a mechanic, handyman, inventor and husbandman. Responsibility came early for Donald and remained a key virtue for him throughout his life. When he was only nine years old, he ran the water wagon for his father's threshing machine and by 15, he and his brother were in charge of running the steam engine and separator.
Donald graduated from Ashton High School, where he was a star athlete, lettering for four years in football, basketball and track, and held the discus throw record for many years. After high school, he played football for the University of Idaho- Southern Branch at Pocatello before leaving to serve an LDS mission in the Northern States Mission.
After his mission, Donald married Eunice Irene Seely of St. Anthony in the Salt Lake City Temple on October 6, 1938. They acquired a farm near Ashton and raised three boys: Stuart Lamar, Dimond Scott, and Richard Todd. During World War II, he moved his family during winters to Los Angeles where he learned die-making skills to assist in the war effort.
Donald possessed an enduring love of building and an intuitive knowledge of how things work and how to fix them guided him throughout his professional life. After leaving the farm in 1949, he went into business with his brother, Herschel, manufacturing specialized farm equipment. He later left farm life and moved his family to Idaho Falls to work at Argonne Labs and Aerojet General researching the use of nuclear energy to generate electrical power at the EBRI facility, the world's first nuclear power plant (now part of the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory). He retired from Idaho Steel Products, where he conceived, engineered, and built food processing equipment that made tater tots and waffle fries. This business took him to Nova Scotia, Japan and throughout the Western US.
Donald was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and as President of his Kiwanis Club. One of the most memorable chapters in his family's life began in 1956, when they wen to Auckland, New Zealand, to serve an LDS labor mission to help build the Hamilton New Zealand Temple, Church College of New Zealand, and chapels. Here Donald combined his engineering talents with his commitment to his faith. Faith especially sustained him and his family after a construction site accident involving faulty wiring sent hundreds of volts through his heart while he was perched on the steeple tower some 90 feet in the air. Despite this trial, he and his family loved their time in New Zealand and they returned there for a 40-year mission reunion.
Later in life, Donald and Eunice spent their winters in Mesa, AZ, where he enjoyed the camaraderie of the community wood shop. His love of woodworking never waned and you could often find him crafting beautifully turned bowls, pepper grinders and such at his lathe. Even when he was physically unable to use his tools, he took great delight m reading "Fine Woodworking Magazine."
He is preceded in death by his wife Eunice and survived by three sons, 14 grandchildren, and more than 48 great-grandchildren.
A reception will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 29, 2010, at Brighton Gardens of Salt Lake City, 76 South 500 East, Salt Lake City The funeral service will take place at noon Saturday, July 31, 2010, at the Ashton First Ward, 1313 N 3600 E, Ashton, just north of the Kneview Cemetery. A family visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the Kneview Cemetery, Ashton.
The family extends thanks to the caregiving staffs of Brighton Gardens of Salt Lake and Silverado Hospice for making Donald's last years comfortable.

Mahlon Kidd (1922-2010)
Mahlon Lee Kidd, 87, passed away peacefully in his sleep Friday, August 6, 2010, at his home in Boise.
Mahlon was born Oct. 29, 1922, in Marysville, the son of Henry Mike Lee Kidd and Veda Hendricks Kidd, the second of six children.
At age 17 he enlisted in the Navy and gallantly served in World War II in the South Pacific.
He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for achieving 25 bombing missions, Air Medal with three gold stars, combat aircrew wings, good conduct medal and nine Asiatic Pacific Ribbons.
After the war, he married the love of his life, Marva Parkinson, on Dec. 22, 1946, in Marysville. The marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS temple on Aug. 31, 1951. They had six children, Marva Elinda (Barry) Mitchell, Dora Lee (Carl) Deguilio, Don (Beverly) Kidd, Myrl (Louise) Kidd, Henry (Laura) Kidd and Myrna Ilene (Ken) McKnight.
They later settled on a farm in Goshen. Besides farming, Dad worked for INEL for many years. He also served in the Naval Reserve, where he retired in 1982.
He was an active member of the LDS Church. Dad enjoyed helping his neighbors, friends and family in whatever work needed to be done.
He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and carpentry work.
He was a talented artist.
He loved traveling around the country with Mom and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Marva, his children, his 28 grandchildren and his many, many great-grandchildren
Funeral services were held Thursday, Aug. 12, 2010 at the Marysville LDS Church with Bishop Gary Marsden officiating.
Interment was at the Pineview Cemetery
in Ashton, with military honors.
Scott Clewell
WEST YELLOWSTONE — Scott Clewell, 61, passed away in his West Yellowstone home on Sunday, July 18, 2010.
He was well known in the region for owning the Bookworm, a popular bookstore on Canyon Street.
Scott was born in Bethlehem, Pa. on June 14, 1949 to Virginia and Earl Clewell. He graduated from Penn State University. Scott worked in Yellowstone National Park and was an avid reader and historian of the park — he loved Yellowstone and that was reflected in the Yellowstone books, antiques, and memorabilia he sold and displayed in the shop.
Scott was a member of the West Yellowstone Police Department and once served as the police chief at one time. He also tended bar at the Brandin’ Iron lounge.
He married June Christiansen Ward on March 24, 1990 and she was the love of his life.
They founded the Bookworm in 1990 and had repeat visitors from all over the country that came just to visit the store, because it was much more than a book selling venue. They stocked the store with rare volumes of first edition books and Yellowstone Park antiques and engaged in interesting, stimulating conversations with their customers about Yellowstone and many other topics. The store’s ambiance is similar to that of the old time bookstores that once were part of the downtown shopping districts that have, for the most part, been replaced by shopping malls. Scott and June enhanced everyone’s Yellowstone and West Yellowstone experience.
They were generous contributors to the Greater Yellowstone Coalition.
Nelson Erikson, author of "A Pictorial Souvenir of Yellowstone," said the Bookworm is "the greatest independent bookstore in all the West."
Scott is survived by his wife, June; his brother, Jeff; his stepdaughter, Laurie Ward-Bailey of Sheridan, Wyo.; his step-grandson, Charles Bailey of Billings; and step-granddaughter, Rosanne Bailey of Billings.
Scott was dearly loved and will be missed by his family and by the Bookworm’s employees and customers.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will follow this fall.

Boyd C. Barnes
Boyd C. Barnes, 67, of Island Park, Idaho, died at his home Thursday, Aug. 26, 2010.
Boyd was born Feb. 25, 1943 in Rexburg, to Ernest J. Barnes and Ruth Fullmer Barnes.
He attended Menan, Midway and Rigby high schools.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1961 until 1964 and then in the active reserves for two years.
He married Carolynn Lowe on Oct. 1, 1991, in St. Anthony.
He worked as a heavy equipment operator on road and building construction.
He enjoyed riding snow machines, fishing on Henry's Lake and Island Park Reservoir, and every summer traveling to Astoria, Ore., to fish.
Survivors include a daughter, Terrie Lyn Jeffs of St. Anthony; a son, Reese (Tara) Barnes of Idaho Falls; his father, Ernest Barnes of Idaho Falls; three stepdaughters, Cozette Markowski, Shellie Campbell and Lorrie French; two sisters, Mary Jane (Stacey) Kelsey of Twin Falls and Nita (Dave) Grimalaskus of Rexburg; a brother, Ray (Tina) Barnes of Idaho Falls; 15 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his mother, his wife, one brother and a sister.
